Choosing the Best Bedtime Story

Choosing the best bedtime story for a child has a few factors and the “best” may vary depending on what night it is. Three of the most important factors to consider are:

  1. Book Length
  2. Subject Matter
  3. Child Preference

#1. Book Length

Some nights you may have more time to read than other nights. Consider how many pages are in each book before deciding to start one. Some children like to read the book themselves.

In those cases, allow for extra time for them to work through challenging words if they are early readers. It’s important to give children time to figure out the words themselves instead of rushing through the book.

#2. Subject Matter

Consider the subject matter. What types of things is your child into lately? Or what lifestyle topics have been coming up?

Use books to build connections for topics they are already interested in or to serve as talking points for topics that may be hard to bring up.

  • Cats
  • Dinosaurs
  • Dogs
  • Farm + Country
  • Jobs
  • Outer Space
  • Princesses
  • Travel
  • Unicorns
  • Volcanos
  • Weather
  • Adoption
  • Anger
  • Self-Confidence
  • Emotions
  • Friendship
  • Grief
  • Lonliness
  • Nutrition
  • Puberty
  • Racism
  • Sharing

#3.

Child Preference

During the course of the day, children do a lot of what they’re told. What to wear, what to eat for breakfast, when to get in the car, when they may have a snack, what to watch on tv, where to put their dinner plate, when to take a bath—you can see that the list goes on and on.

At the end of the day, what a joy it can be to have your child pick their favorite book and share that special moment with you.

Why Bedtime Matters

Researchers and professionals agree that the three most important times in a child’s day are:

  • When they wake up in the morning
  • After your longest separation in the day (when they get home from school, you get home from work, after their nap, etc.)
  • Immediately before bed

In these moments, your child is most receptive to quality moments and soaking up whatever you are pouring out in those moments. It may only be 15 minutes (5 minutes for each time), but how are you spending that time?

Everyone is busy. You may feel overwhelmed. But I promise you, this matters.

Take the time to read a bedtime story with your kids and know that you ended the day with that little bit of quality time.

Psychologists recommend that expectant mothers start reading children's books during pregnancy. Later, children's literature will not only replenish vocabulary, expand horizons and thinking, but will also bring new impressions, discoveries and knowledge. Here are five top reasons why it's so important to keep reading aloud to your children even after they learn to read on their own.

Vocabulary increase

It has been proven that children to whom adults regularly read books aloud learn more words and subsequently become successful students in school and university. While reading, they hear new words that may not be used by parents or others in everyday speech, and at the same time they learn not only the meaning of these words, but also their correct pronunciation.

It is difficult to find more famous poems than the works of Agnia Barto. Her collection “The First Poems and Tales” should be in the home library of any kid - after all, it contains “Our Tanya is crying loudly” and “They dropped the bear on the floor”, and “Vovka is a kind soul” and many others, loved from the very first years the life of the poem. At first, parents read this book aloud, and after a short period of time, children begin to repeat, supplement and quote.

Vladimir Suteev is one of the founders of Soviet animation, writer, illustrator, on whose books and cartoons more than one generation of our compatriots grew up. "The Golden Book of Fairy Tales in the drawings of V. Suteev" is the best gift for young parents and their children. It contains kind and funny, instructive and witty, unusual and beloved fairy tales of the most famous authors. Sergei Mikhalkov, Grigory Oster, Korney Chukovsky, Mikhail Plyatskovsky wrote mainly about children and for them, so their fairy tales and poems, harmoniously complemented by illustrations by Vladimir Suteev, will be the best filling of any evening spent with the family.

Relationship improvement

Moments spent together with a child are priceless. Reading does not require serious material, physical or psychological costs from adults; children feel that their parents are calm and calm down themselves. Psychologists note the importance of such a pastime with children, especially if parents spend a lot of time at work and see their child only a couple of hours a day.

"Deniska's stories" by Victor Dragunsky can be started and continued to be read from any place, because of this they will not lose their originality. Funny and mischievous stories of one of the most famous children's authors do not leave indifferent neither children nor their parents. By the way, later "Stories ..." will be useful to children in elementary school - they are often included in the literature program.

The same can be said about the book by Eduard Uspensky, which has become a classic. “Uncle Fyodor, a dog and a cat and other stories about Prostokvashino” is a collection of stories about a fairy-tale village and its inhabitants, and, of course, about such an “adult” boy, whom everyone calls “Uncle Fyodor”. Many parents note that, rereading the book over and over again, they discover more and more new details and nuances that they had not paid attention to before.

Problem Solving

Books for reading aloud can also be selected in such a way that together with the child they can analyze difficult situations and resolve conflicts, which are almost impossible to avoid in any team - be it a group in a kindergarten or a family. When adults try to explain to a child how to act correctly in a given situation, their favorite literary hero or the plot of a previously read book will come to their aid.

For example, the story about the girl Olya, who was very sloppy, couldn't find a common language with other children and offended her grandmother, does not lose popularity. “The Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors” by Vitaly Gubarev tells how such behavior looks from the outside and how unpleasant it really is when you are treated badly. Together with the child, you can discuss what Olya's problem is, see her shortcomings and decide how to act correctly in this or that situation.

We learned most of the most famous foreign fairy tales thanks to the translator Valentin Berestov. The Fairy Tales collection also includes works by Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm, and Hans-Christian Anderson. Everyone should know these great fairy tales, because they touch upon the most important life problems. At the end of the book there is a list of questions that will help you discuss and analyze what you have read with your child and try to transfer fairy-tale situations to real life.

About the book

Development of love for literature

A large amount of information at school or a difficult relationship with a teacher can discourage a child from reading in the future. In addition, must-read lists rarely include multiple genres. Reading aloud to young children helps to instill in them a love of classical and modern literature, to identify favorite genres, and to make even the most boring work memorable through, for example, expressive reading of dialogues or acting out certain scenes.

One of the important genres of literature that can and should be introduced to children at any age (for some reason schools often ignore it) is fantasy. Parallel and fictional worlds perfectly train the imagination of children and, if the child likes it, it will be simply impossible to tear him away from reading. The ACT Dragon Saga series is a series of novels about the civilization of dragons, described by the American children's writer Tui Sutherland. Each book in the series tells about one of the little dragons, who, according to the prophecy, will have to stop the bloody wars between the dragon tribes. Books truly captivate children of all ages and their parents alike, so be prepared for fantasy to become one of your family's favorite genres of literature.

Strengthening listening skills

When you read to a child, his hearing develops. Thanks to this, he will better understand and perceive requests, instructions and appeals to himself, and will also remember many different intonations and will be able to use them at the right time. After reading, it is important to talk with the child, ask about what he liked or disliked in the book, what he especially remembered, ask to retell the plot - this will teach you not only to be more attentive to the texts, but also to analyze the information received.

The World in Questions and Answers series is a collection of the first information your child will receive. Books in the series can be opened at any time when only children have any questions. For example, "Tested Facts and the Most Interesting Misconceptions" will help your child learn what banknotes are actually made of, what color is the "black box", whether swallows predict the weather, why Coca-Cola was invented. A set of interesting facts and a refutation of many popular myths - something that is interesting for the whole family to learn, read aloud and discuss what they read. Books in the series help to keep abreast of the most interesting and improve the erudition of a child of any age.
