9 Fun Versions of the Alphabet Song to Sing with Kids

Learning to sing the alphabet song is an important part of the process of  learning letter recognition on the journey to reading and writing. While I am pretty sure we all know the traditional alphabet song, these super cool versions are lots of fun and fabulous for bringing the letters of the alphabet to life for preschool, kindergarten and early elementary/primary aged children.

The Alphabet Song by The LMNOPs: An upbeat, groovy version of the classic song.

The Alphabet Song by Super Simple Songs: The most traditional version of the song in this collection with a great animation with plastic letters, great for encouraging kids to follow along.

Elmo Sings a Rap Alphabet Song: So Sesame Street has to have the most fabulous of all video alphabet resources, right?!! I’ve featured a few here, including this fun version with Elmo rapping.

ABC Disco with Grover: Now this is classic Sesame Street. In fact, I am pretty sure I first saw it in the 70s when I was a child! You just can’t go past disco!

Sesame Street’s Outer Space ABCs: A more classic song version from Sesame Street with a cool, space themed animation.

ABC Song by Debbie Doo: Debbie sings a catchy jazz version of the classic alphabet song.

The ABC Song by StoryBots: A fun robot animation with cool robotic singing voices.

ABC Phonics Song by The Learning Station: Teaching the alphabet through different musical styles! Love the rock version.

Animal Alphabet by Key Wilde: An fun alphabet story told through a song about fun animal antics with gorgeous illustrations. I can see this inspiring some great alphabet animal drawing with older children.

Have fun singing the alphabet! Do you have a favourite version?

The ABC (Verse 1)[edit]

"The ABC Song", otherwise referred to as "Now I Know My ABCs" or simply "The ABC", "ABC Song", "ABCs" /ˌeɪ.biːˈsiːz/ or "ABC" /ˌeɪ.biːˈsiː/, is one of the best-known English/French alphabet songs, and perhaps the one most frequently referred to as "The Alphabet Song", or "The Alphabet", "Alphabet Song" or " Alphabet" for short, especially in the United States and Canada.

Music for the alphabet song including some common variations on the lyrics

Tune for Alphabet song

Problems playing this file? See media help.

The song was first copyrighted in 1835 by the Boston-based music publisher Charles Bradlee, and given the title "The A.B.C., a German air with variations for the flute with an easy accompaniment for the piano forte". The musical arrangement was attributed to Louis Le Maire (sometimes Lemaire), an 18th-century composer. This was "Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1835, by C. Bradlee, in the clerk's office of the District Court of Massachusetts", according to the Newberry Library, [1] which also says, "The theme is that used by Mozart for his piano variations, Ah, vous dirai-je, maman." [2] This tune is the same as the tune for "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and similar to that of "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep".

Lyrics: (each line represents two measures, or eight beats)

A, B, C, D, E, F, G... (/eɪ biː siː diː iː ɛf dʒiː/)
H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P... )
Q, R, S... / T, U, V... (/kjuː ɑːr ɛs | tiː juː viː/; pause between S and T, though in some variants, "and" is inserted)
W... X.../ Y and(/&) Z. (/ˈdʌbəl.juː ɛks | waɪ ænd ziː/; pause between X and Y, and W and X last for two beats)
Now I know my ABCs.
Next time, won't you sing with me? [3]

Due to the speed at which ' L, M, N, O, P ' is spoken it is a common misconception among children still learning the alphabet to believe that it is in fact its own letter called 'elemenopee' (among other variations). Some have proposed teaching slower versions of the song to avoid this issue. [4]

Backwards alphabet[edit]

This is a version that goes Z to A instead of A to Z.

z-y-x and(/&) w
v-u-t, s-r-q
p-o-n-m-l-k-j
i-h-g-f-e-d-c-b-a
Now you know your ZYXs
I bet that's not what you expected! [5]

The e-d-c-b part is as fast as the l-m-n-o part in the normal alphabet song.

Zed for Zee[edit]

In the United States, Z is pronounced zee ; in most other English-speaking countries (such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia) it is pronounced zed . Generally, the absent zee -rhyme is not missed, although some children use a zee pronunciation in the rhyme which they would not use elsewhere. Variants of the song exist to accommodate the zed pronunciation. One variation shortens the second line and lengthens the last, to form a near rhyme between N and zed: [6] [7]

h-i-j-k-l-m-n
o-p-q-r-s-t-u

French Canadian version[edit]

A French-language version of the song is also taught in Canada, with generally no alterations to the melody except in the final line that requires adjustment to accommodate the two-syllable pronunciation of the French y .

Phonics songs[edit]

Because the English language has more than 40 sounds [8] and only 26 letters, children and beginning readers also need to learn the different sounds (or phonemes) associated with each letter. Many songs have been written to teach phonemic awareness and they are usually referred to as alphabet songs.

Acrostic songs[edit]

There are also songs that go through the alphabet, making some of the letters stand for something in the process. An example, "'A' You're Adorable" (also known as "The Alphabet Love Song"), was recorded in 1948, by Buddy Kaye, Fred Wise, Sidney Lippman, and later Perry Como.

A newer example of this is from the musical Matilda . "School Song" is an acrostic that spells out the alphabet phonetically. [ citation needed ]

Backwards song (Verse 2)[edit]

The group Wee Sing released an alphabet song with the letters in reverse order, called "ZYXs". [9]

The Canadian children's TV series The Big Comfy Couch used a version of the song in the first episode of Season 4, "Backwards". [10]

Comedian Soupy Sales released a song in 1966 called "Backwards Alphabet" which contained the reverse alphabet in lyrical style. [ citation needed ] The original version of the song was performed by actress Judi Rolin with the Smothers Brothers in the 1966 teleplay adaptation of Alice Through the Looking Glass . [11]

The completion of the trilogy of Norwegian electronic artists Röyksopp, which began in April this year with the first full-length album in eight years. The duo of Thorbjorn Brundtland and Svein Berge continues to strike a balance between their traditional Nordic electronica, 80s synth spirit and pop melodies. The sound palette of the new album is almost identical to its predecessors, but this is the most introspective release of the series, due to the large number of instrumental and ambient parts.

Portland stars are back with their sixth studio album. This time, interesting combinations of luminaries are observed in the cold autumn sky: music producer Rob Schnapf made the sound for this album, and one of the brightest numbers on the disc was the track "The Line", in which Ruth Radelet, known to many for her participation in the Portland group Chromatics, sang .

Director David Lynch once entrusted Chromatics with a performance at the Road House bar in Twin Peaks, and this moment in a strange way highlights the content of the new Soft Kill record - here, too, that very subtle atmosphere of the American province is perfectly felt, straightforward and mysterious at the same time, nuclear a mixture of inseparable sincere feelings, illusions and mystical experiences. We just have to listen carefully and enjoy.

Another great example of metalheads mixing heavy music with dark jazz. In general, it is difficult to say right away what exactly the members of the Italian band Messa play. There are both traditional gooey doom and rock and roll riffs; soothing female vocals with a beautiful saxophone in the background and the brutality of stoner rock; rapid-fire instrumentals and hypnotic shamanic music.

The album is so full of variety that every listener will definitely find something of their own in it. And we hope that these wonderful Italians will not stop there and continue to delight us with their experiments.

The chain of resorts "Angel Island" was created for those whose personal social rating is not tainted by the manifestation of social inadequacy - a place for those who value the rest of others as their own. A space carefully fenced off from the rest of the world, 75% virtual, designed for a truly high-quality vacation, filled with tranquility, contemplation, and, of course, excellent service.

As you know, nothing has such a favorable effect on a personal rating as the ability to understand your neighbor, not to evaluate him by any of the signs, but simply to take him for granted. And where, no matter how on the Island of Angels, this can be practiced, where for each of the visitors the environment itself chooses the optimally comfortable and favorable environment and reduces interaction with other visitors to a minimum. There, in the world around you, your every social contact, whether it be a passing glance of a passerby or a dialogue with a pizza delivery man, will be subjected to endless interpretations, every like will be taken into account, and your personal tag cloud will shudder with every atypical social interaction. Only a person with a truly stable rating can afford to relax and give free rein to feelings, but even luminaries sometimes fall. Therefore, there is nothing more necessary than visiting the "Island of Angels" at least once a year!

Here you can immerse yourself in blissful solitude, uninterrupted by ads, the need to answer any incoming calls and backed by 24/7 service provided by our new generation androids! Also at your service are the best specialists in the field of psychologists, personal growth, yoga instructors, massage therapists, social course correctors, mana therapists and even healthy sleep hygiene trainers! Guaranteed result, improved rating stability and a qualitative increase in social activity even after a five-day visit. Treat yourself to a real vacation and plunge into the colorful stream of social interaction with renewed vigor and inspiration! Carissa's Wierd - Songs About Leaving (2002, Sad Robot)
    #sadcore | #bedroom_pop

One of the cornerstones of sadcore celebrated its 20th anniversary a couple of months ago. The third album of the Seattle group was recorded already at the end of the first wave of the genre: Low by this time were approaching the top ten full-lengths, Codeine had not existed for many years, as well as Red House Painters. However, it was "Songs About Leaving" that littered the slowly smoldering fire of that old sadcore. The quintet, led by Matthew Brook and Jennifer Hayes, fit into the classics of the genre even during the short life of the band, along the way creating a bunch of samples for sad Russian rappers.

The album's external formula seemed to be inspired by the emo scene of those times - ironic, and sometimes downright funny, song titles coexisted with dreary and desperate content. Take a look at the lyrics of Jen’s solo song, which she recorded in her bedroom “So You Wanna Be A Superhero”, a teenage ballad about severe depression, guilt, suicidal thoughts and trying to figure out how and why to continue to live in the real world.

Completely unnoticed is the return after a six-year silence of the cult duo Menace Ruine. But the new release of Canadian ritualists in its sound became a continuation of their cult album “The Die Is Cast”.

Musically, the band continues to shed their metal roots and move more and more into folk, for this they even moved to a small settlement surrounded by the forests of Quebec. Drone guitars have become a little softer, but Genevieve Beaulieu's vocals are still beautiful. Menace Ruine no longer worship the dark gods, they have found peace and speak with tree spirits.

    Nas & Hit-Boy - King's Disease III (2022, Mass Appeal)
    #hip_hop

Nas and Hit-Boy's collaboration turned out to be so successful and fruitful that it turned into 4 full-length albums for ~2.5 years: the first part of "King's Disease", released in 2020, received a Grammy for best rap album; the second, which dates back to 2021, is a nomination; "Magic" was left without statuettes, but it caught on, received popular recognition and hit numerous tops at the end of the same year. Today, Nasir and Chauncey presented the third chapter of "Royal Diseases", and the most important thing that I want to note is that this is not a tortured muzlo for the sake of successful sales on the luggage of the previous two parts. This is further proof that Nas is one of the greatest in the game of all time, and Hit-Boy is almost the main hitmaker of the last decade.

"King's Disease III" is a luxurious and premium album, but not on the side of gloss and bluster like Rick Ross, for example. It's more about status, when your monumental discography speaks for you, rather than individual songs or lines. The king speaks. Cover to match: a solemn combination of gold and red, nothing superfluous, just the language of facts. Nas doesn't care what instrumental to read: Hit-Boy sorts out and throws him classic east coast, trap, and drill, and Nasir takes it in one touch, juggles and does it so skillfully and gracefully like a magician.

I won't be surprised if the duo will have a second Grammy next year. The album is very good.

    Tim Aminov — "Ultraviolence" (2022)
    #experimental_pop

"Ultraviolence" — the video for the first single from the forthcoming album of producer and composer Tim Aminov "Flowers of Evil".

The video resembles a post-documentary western. Before us are pickup trucks, horses, wasteland and aggressive people who want to catch prey, and then become it themselves.

However, the video does not promote evil things, on the contrary, it suggests being at least a little kinder to each other.

Fleshwater — We're Not Here To Be Loved (2022, Closed Casket Activities)
    #alternative_metal | #metalgaze | #post_hardcore | #post_grunge

A beautiful debut from VeinFM's side project with vocalist Marisa Jordan Shirar, who pay homage to late 90s early 00s alternatives from Deftones and Hum to LSD and the Search on their album We're Not Here To Be Loved for God, and their sound is reminiscent of bands from the new wave of metallized shoegaze in the vein of Thornhill and Moodring.

The perfect combination of extreme female and male vocals, post-grunge riffs, post-hardcore dissonances and a metalgaze wall of noise. And all this was mixed by Kurt Ballu from Converge. If this is not enough for you to pay special attention to such an interesting release, then just admire this duck and look for a cover of Björk in the album.

Polyphia - Remember That You Will Die (2022, Rise Records)
    #progressive_rock | #flamenco_nuevo | #fusion | #math_rock | #trap

Let's try to speak without regard to past releases and any expectations (which is very difficult, because past experience is important). Polyphia, therefore, is an instrumental band, but it uses a lot of guest vocalists. Almost half of the tracks are filled with vocals, and far from one-sided in origin, someone came from hip-hop, someone from pop music and someone from metal. (In the original draft of the lyrics here, I doubted the need for any of the features on the album, and considered them too redundant and not of high quality, but changed my mind). From the second or more auditions, you can already notice that there is an individual approach to each fit. For example, the track with Sophia Black (“ABC”), which the sound of Polyphia literally absorbs into itself, and it begins to adapt to the keys and rhythm of the instruments. Sounds highly technical on both sides. Speaking of hip-hop, the hits from Killstation (“Memento Mori”) and $NOT (“Fuck Around and Find Out”) sound interesting, but worse than the rest of the hits, they are too straightforward to pander to the hip-hop nature; the third fit, "Chimera", devotes only the final part to rapper Lil West, and spends the first two-thirds on the reflection of the group's creative path. “Bloodbath” with Chino Moreno fits the description “occupies an obscene amount of space”, but, in fact, it is a sort of experiment of merging Moreno's shoegaze nature and Polyphia's proger into one (and quite successfully). I'll try to be brief about the instrumental tracks: "Genesis", "The Audacity" are the perfect addition to Polyphia's sound, the singles "Playing God" and "Neurotica" are a new level of the band's own sound, "Reverie" as if from a previous album or with a strong reference. "All Falls Apart" is an interlude something that you, if you don't look at the tracklist, would consider the end or the beginning of another track. And the record ends with a fit with Steve Vai (“Ego Death”), which sounds exactly as it can be imagined by crossing Polyphia and Vai, that is, cosmically cool. You can analyze each track in detail if the above is not enough.

The album follows the precepts of a good sequel (being a quad) and twists everything good from its predecessor to the maximum volume, and also removes what could be considered a disadvantage. If on "New Levels New Devils" the album's length of thirty-three minutes can be called a drawback, then "Remember That You Will Die" has grown to forty minutes. But this musical canvas is so well tailored that, firstly, you don’t notice how these twelve tracks fly by, and secondly, you don’t notice the transitions between them with your ear. It is literally a living organism enclosed in an album format.

Experimental inserts and non-obvious musical moves have become even more experimental and interesting here, this moves the release away from some genres familiar to us, but if not tags. Prog- and math-rock finally merged with a funky-flamenco guitar, behind which, like animals behind a Disney princess, a trail of electronics and brass stretches. At the same time, metal and djent roots are not forgotten, they periodically appear in the light of spotlights, especially brightly in the reflective Chimera. All wind instruments that will appear to us along the way of the tracklist are both fit and unmarked artists. On half of the tracks, the percussion was written and recorded by Luke Holland, but it was used after editing by Clay, the band's original drummer.

When you have a genre canon, some unified sound and a set of tools to extract it, you can say that some band has an “unusual prog” because, wow, they added a new tune to it. So it was with Polyphia before, they approached the same djent and prog-rock in their own way. But now there is such a flurry of various elements that there is no thought about the inappropriateness and non-canonicity of some part of this musical canvas. Because they create their own canon.

    #psychedelic_synthpop | #latin_folk | #new_wave

"Teatro Lucido" is the name of the mythical theater in which the group performed many times in Mexico and which inspired them in many ways. The first album in the "Collection Odyssée" themed series. La Femme are one of the few French artists who have achieved success abroad when they sang in French, and now we can watch their release in Spanish in its entirety.

Inspiration for this album was also found during the famous Semana Santa or Holy Week in Spain, but also through paso doble, reggaeton, Brazilian and Andalusian rhythms, classical guitars and 80s movida.

Low - I Could Live in Hope (1994, Vernon Yard Recordings)
    #slowcore | #indie_rock

Mimi Parker of Low has died. She fought cancer for a long time, but the miracle did not happen. On this most sad occasion, we recall the debut album of this great band.

Formed in 1993 in Minnesota, the group has absorbed the whole atmosphere of this northern state, bordering Canada, located on the shores of the serene Great Lakes. This very atmosphere - melancholy, dreamy, immersed in thought - was embodied by the group on their debut, I Could Live in Hope, which was followed by a long and quite successful career for such an indie band. And it continues to follow - the group is still functioning, the group released its last album at the moment only two years ago. Unfortunately, their later works lose their early aesthetics and flavor, which is typical for early slowcore.

Starting with the fifth Things We Lost in the Fire, the band's style, trying to keep up with the times, is noticeably modernized, turning into acoustic indie-rock saturated with dream-pop style, and although it has not completely lost its dreamy melancholic shades of the past, it still lacks something, some former inner anxiety, for which I personally love this group, as well as the genre abounding in this matter. The taste and color, of course, but I want something more from the slow-core masters. Although, my experience of meeting various bands of the genre suggests that the musicians, most likely, simply grew out of the state in which they were at first, confusion and anxiety left, and slowcore also left with them.

But, this is all empty talk. Let's talk about the album. Inspired by the work of Brian Eno, the iconic Joy Division and, last but not least, their fellow pioneers from New York, Codeine, Low released a monotonous, depressing, aloof record. I Could Live in Hope, as it should be for real slowcore, is an extremely monotonous and minimalist album. A quiet, insinuating, contrasting bass guitar forms the basis for the compositions, and the guitarist Alan Sparhawk mixes with it, carefully selecting each chord, creating a leisurely, extremely calm, with a touch of Valium, picture. The same Sparhawk, who is also responsible for the vocals in the group, completes the canvas with a soothing, as if purring, quiet vocal. Occasionally, as, for example, on "Slide" and "Sea", a cold, drawn-out female voice is included. This is Alan's wife, Mimi, who plays drums on Low. Each word is given very carefully, the group does not scatter them in vain, which only completes the ascetic style and minimalism of the debut.

This combination of a whispering voice and instruments echoing it creates not so much a depressing and oppressive background as Codeine creates, but a picture of some kind of inner longing, warm sadness, as melancholic as it is naive. The band's sound reminds me of the sound of dream pop, to a small extent, in the spirit of Mazzy Star. It will be that dream pop whose "dream" side, the side of dreams and unfulfilled hopes, is smashed to smithereens and trampled into the mud. Low as a person who would like to see glimpses of something good and good in the world, refusing to give up completely, but again and again encountering reasons for disappointment. Therefore, in my opinion, the album bears its name, like a banner with a broken pole. Low could live in hope. They can do it. But they don't.

The Sawtooth Grin - Good. (2022, Wax Vessel)
    #mathcore | #grindcore | #sasscore

Comeback of the week from the American band The Sawtooth Grin. The previous album called "Cuddlemonster", familiar to all fans of the core scene of the zero, was released more than twenty years ago. It seems as if there was no such break in two decades and the guys just picked up where they left off in 2001, continuing to experiment and develop their signature mathcore/grindcore crossover sound with a powerful emotional overtone. A good and nostalgic release for those who at one time pulled music from the relevant sections of the altwall site or something like that.
