A miniseries filled with the charm and whimsy of childhood

Many people have seen the classic "Harold and the Purple Crayon" short from 1959, distributed by Weston Woods and narrated by Norman Rose. It's nothing particularly outstanding for its time, but being based off the timeless book by Crockett Johnson, it does have its merits. Most notably is the film's minimalist style of outlining Harold's purple drawings on a plain white background with Harold being the only moving element of the film. However, there is one adaptation of Harold that I believe took Crockett Johnson's book to the next level, and far surpasses the simplistic charm of Weston Woods' short.

In the "Harold" miniseries created by HBO Family, Harold's world isn't limited to a single white plane with purple as its only color source (save Harold's blue pajamas). His crayon dimension practically dances across the screen, with vibrant colors, highly imaginative scenery, and musical numbers by Van Dyke Parks that allow for semi-surrealist sequences that are truly a treat to the senses without ever becoming overwhelming or cluttered. Admittedly, allowing every purple-lined object to be in full-color and have freedom of movement is a big departure from the books, but it all works beautifully, and helps to engage even the youngest viewers into the story.

What should be emphasized is that this series is meant for the youngest viewers. Each bedtime adventure alternates between long stretches of exploration, calming but engaging narration by Sharon Stone, and the aforementioned songs by Van Dyke Parks, each with plenty for children to see and interact with in their minds. Yet, it should also be emphasized that this show never panders to its parent audience. What impresses me about what HBO did with this miniseries, more than anything, is that they created an innocent and gentle atmosphere that appeals to the child in everyone. There is a soft touch within "Harold", a tender, caring embrace that permeates the very being of each episode like a mother's kiss goodnight. There was obviously a lot of care into making Harold's adventures fun and endearing.

At this point in the review, it has become clear that there are multiple adventures, not just the classic journey, that Harold takes the viewer on. The first episode is an adaptation of the original Harold book, while the twelve episodes after that are entirely new stories created for the miniseries. These twelve adventures have a slightly different feel than the first, but still manage to create dynamic stories worthy of the iconic character. Each features some sort of moral lesson or answers a question that Harold has before bed, with the conflict resolved by problem-solving and always in a gentle manner. An art museum, a giant fish bowl with a mermaid, and a bug-sized garden are just a few of the places that Harold visits, each designed with numerous elements for Harold to interact with. Add a purple crayon that can bring literally anything into existence, and the possibilities become endless. The writers and animators took this mechanic to their advantage, allowing the protagonist to draw anything he might want or need, while allowing the "natural" crayon world to take center focus.

To sum it up, "Harold and the Purple Crayon" is a brilliant miniseries with loads of charm, a soothing atmosphere, and a beautiful visual world. For all of you conspiracy buffs who say that Harold never really made it home, the end of every episode proves that to be very wrong. In reality, Harold always comes back to his real-life bedroom, closes his eyes, and drifts off into a peaceful, happy sleep.

Plot, Cast, and Everything Else We Know

    By Adam Brown

The iconic children's book Harold and the Purple Crayon is making its way to the big screen. Here's what we know so far.

    HarperCollins

The Harold and the Purple Crayon book will soon be drawn to life on the big screen. Sony and Columbia will be releasing a film adaptation of the beloved children’s book series early next year.

Coming nearly 70 years after the original book was released, the film has seen a long road to the finish line. Development first began in 1992, but behind-the-scenes issues led to it being abandoned by 1994. By 2010, it was reported that a new CGI film was in development, though that has also seemingly faded, with no new updates for the last few years.

In early 2021, it was confirmed that a live-action film was finally in development, and filming commenced in early 2022. With the film adaptation of Harold and the Purple Crayon seemingly finally seeing the light of day, let’s look at everything we know. Who is lined up in the cast? What will the plot entail, and how closely will it follow the books? When and where can we see the film released? And what else should audiences know about the Harold and the Purple Crayon movie?

Harold and the Purple Crayon: The Plot

    CTV

At this point, we know very little about the plot of the film or how closely it will follow the plot of the book series. The books' storylines are, at their core, very simple. Harold is a four-year-old boy who possesses a magic purple crayon. He uses that magic crayon to draw anything he desires, which the crayon will bring to life.

When Harold goes for a walk at night, he sees that the moon is not out, so he draws it with the crayon. He continues his adventures with the crayon, drawing many other things from his imagination before returning to bed, safe and sound. While this is the main plot of the first book, several other books later followed due to the first's success.

The film will likely retain the main elements of the book series while bringing the story to a grander scale fit for a movie. Notably, the plot of the dormant CGI film would have followed Harold as he realizes that he has been selfish with his crayon. He then uses it to help his parents, family, and friends with their needs.

It is unknown if the live-action film will utilize any part of this concept, but since that idea is already fleshed out, it could be a good story to expand for the new movie. In any case, all that we can do is wait for more plot information to come out, likely in the coming months before the release date.

Harold and the Purple Crayon: The Cast

    Warner Bros. Pictures

The film already has an all-star cast lined up despite the lack of plot information. However, none of the announced cast members have confirmed roles or storylines attached. Shazam! star Zachary Levi is set to play a lead role, though it is unlikely that this role will be the titular Harold. (Who knows, Levi may go with his Shazam! route and play an adult Harold.)

In addition to Levi, the film is also set to feature names such as New Girl’s Zooey Deschanel and actor and comic Lil Rel Howery. Other cast members include actors Ravi Patel and Camille Guaty, Sex Education star Tanya Reynolds, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Pete Gardner.

These are all the confirmed cast members as of this writing. More information about their characters and additional casting announcements will likely be made as we approach closer to the date of release.

    Release Date

Harold and the Purple Crayon is currently set to be released in theaters by Sony Pictures on January 27, 2023.

    Everything Else We Know

    HBO

Though it's only taken a short 68 years to bring the book to the big screen, Harold and the Purple Crayon has already been adapted for various other media. An animated television series of the same name aired for 13 episodes on HBO between 2001 and 2002. Each episode focused on Harold using his purple crayon to explore a new world while learning life lessons along the way.

A seven-minute animated short film based on the original book in the series debuted back in 1959. Animated shorts based on later books followed in 1971 and 1974, respectively. The series has also been adapted for the stage over the years. As of March 2022, a new Broadway Harold and the Purple Crayon musical adaptation featuring original music from the band AJR is in development. It will focus on Harold as an adult as he confronts real-world problems without the help of his crayon. It is currently unclear how or if the musical’s storyline will connect to the new film.

Despite the long road to the big screen, it is clear that Harold and the Purple Crayon has persisted in the public eye for nearly seven decades, giving the film great potential for success.

    Composition

The first wax chalk was made from a mixture of oil to give it consistency and charcoal to make it black. Later charcoal was replaced by other pigments.

Kerosene was subsequently replaced with beeswax to make the sticks more durable and easier to handle.

Wax chalk today is usually made from inexpensive paraffin to which fatty acids and pigments are added. The size of these pencils is 12 mm in diameter and 83 mm in length. To protect the hands, each stick is wrapped in paper.

    History

In 1864 Joseph Binney founded the Peekskill Chemical Company in New York. This company produces black charcoal paint and red paint containing iron oxide. And it is possible to improve the black color by adding carbon to it. Around 1885, Joseph's son Edwin Binney and his nephew C. Harold Smith formed a partnership called Binney and Smith. The cousins, the new owners of the business, expand their product line to include shoe polish and printing inks, and begin producing a list of pencils for schools. So they developed a new type of non-toxic colored chalk. At the St. Louis World's Fair at 19In 04 they won the gold medal for their new teacher chalk: the first chalk dust. Around 1903, the first non-toxic version of Crayola pencils appeared. The name Crayola was created by Alice Stead Binnie (E. Binnie's wife) by combining the French words chalk (chalk) and grasse (oily). The first colors were black, brown, blue, red, purple, orange, yellow and green. Today, Crayola produces over a hundred different types of pastels, including fluorescent paints created in 1973 year. In 2012, over 2 billion pencils were sold annually in 60 countries. at , Crayola released its 100 billionth pencil.
