Why do some children study with pleasure, while others cannot be forced? - RIA Novosti, 08/31/2021

Why do some children study with pleasure, while others cannot be forced?

Today a child has to study at school for 11 years, then another 4-6 years at a university, and then constantly maintain his qualifications with courses and seminars. It is not easy even for those who love to learn. Why do some kids enjoy learning while others hate it? How do parents influence this and what should be done to instill in a child a craving for knowledge?

Why children learn new things faster than adults

In the article we talk about how we can learn the "tricks" of children in relation to learning.

Everyone teaches the same way in schools, but there is no universal way of teaching. The brain of each person is arranged in its own way, and how one person learns can be difficult for another. Especially when you compare how much faster children can learn a new skill than adults. Researchers have found that as a person ages, it becomes more difficult to learn a new skill. If in your “advanced” age you want to quickly continue your education, take the advice of children and do as they do.

How children learn

By nature, children are programmed to learn until they reach a certain age and acquire all the skills needed to function in the real world. Schools are safe spaces where children can learn without stress interfering with their learning. They are also in an environment where they can learn from their peers. They look to older children for guidance, and various types of encouragement encourage them to continue their education. Children learn subject-oriented, at a pace appropriate to their age. All this is different from how adults learn.

How adults learn

Adults differ in how they acquire a new skill because their intentions are different from those of a child. As a rule, adults make an active choice in favor of learning something in order to continue growing as a person. For example, an adult who enjoys writing and wants to publish a book might take a creative writing course. They come to class with experience, values, and a desire to use what they have learned to achieve their goals.

Another feature of adult learning is that it is learner-centered, that is, they focus on subjects that they can apply in their professional life. You will see how an adult resists attending a conference or seminar if he does not see it as necessary for his career. The same can be said about students. Universities require students to continue to study math, English, and science, even though their majors do not require higher education in these areas.

Key takeaways from children

A number of factors play a role in the fact that children learn new things faster than adults. One of the most significant is the lack of time. Children don't have the same responsibilities as adults, and while you cook dinner after your day at work, they have time to learn a new language or discipline. Another factor preventing you from learning as fast as a child is the fear of looking stupid in front of others. Adolescents remember childhood situations and feel embarrassed, but at that moment they did not feel shame or embarrassment. And the last thing that can be taken away from the way children learn is that they focus on the missing piece of information for short periods of time. When a child reads and comes across a new word, he concentrates on it until he understands it. The same can be said for adults who are learning a new skill.

Strengthen your memory as an adult

If your goal is to be able to play the guitar by the end of the year, you may want to ask your children for advice. Remember that there are some skills that are easier for you to master than other adults. A work colleague may be an unrecognized rock star.
