10 Interactive Online Games to Teach Sight Words to Beginning Readers
Sight words and high frequency words are an important part of teaching new readers. These words have to be memorized, which means they require a lot of repetition and practice. I love using these online games to teach sight words in my classroom.
Sight word instruction can be really challenging in the classroom because you have a classroom filled with students who learn different things in different ways at different paces. 🥴
It requires so much repetition and practice, yet all of our students need those things in different ways.
I tackle sight word instruction from all sides. We read them in sentences, practice them with music and movement, do art projects, and more!
These 10 online games to teach sight words are FREE and super interactive. [Free as of August 2019] They give students the chance to practice identifying, matching and reading sight words, all while playing fun games.

Sight Word Bingo
This classic bingo game from abcya.com is a favorite for all of my students. The little amoeba monster at the top says a word, then the student identifies it and clicks it.
This game words great on a computer or on an interactive white board. I have my students take turns at the SmartBoard in my classroom during a center or we do it whole group when we have a minute to spare.
No matter when we use it, it’s a student favorite. 👍🏼
Sight Word Smash
Students love this fun, sight word identification game. The computer says a word. Then they use the pointer to find it and smash it.
I like this game because the word is on more than one block so students get the repetition of seeing and identifying the word multiple times!
Sight Word Memory
There are many, many sight word memory games online but this one is my favorite.
I like that the computer says the word as you flip the card, whether it’s a match or not.
Seeing and hearing a word multiple times is perfect for auditory and visual learners. I also appreciate that when they finish a level, they can keep playing with new words!
Sight Words in Space
Students love this space themed sight word game. A cat says the word they are trying to find. Words float by in power cells and they have to click the right one.
The words are floating up so students have to identify them quickly. Just like in Sight Word Smash, words appear more than one time, too. 👏
Listen & Spell
I absolutely love this Listen & Spell game! We know that readers struggle with sight words because they do not follow phonics rules or because they are too advanced. We also know that students learn to read and write words at the same time.
This game gives them the chance to spell sight words with a limited number of letters at the bottom.
First it says the word, then students use the yellow letters to spell it. The only letters available are letters that are in the word.
Playing this game helps students move on from “identifying” to “creating” on Bloom’s Taxonomy, which we know helps make information stick. Students will gain confidence in writing their sight words as well as reading them!
Sight Word Jigsaw
This identification game uses the same concepts as matching, except students are able to see all of the words at one time. They click the sound button on one of the yellow pieces to hear the word they are looking for. Then they find the blue word puzzle piece and drag it over.
I like that this game adds the element of looking at several words to find the correct one. It gives students practice at quickly identifying words by their beginning sounds.
Popcorn Words
Students playing this game are working the popcorn machine at a movie theater. A monkey comes up to the counter and says a sight word.
Students click on the correct sight word to give it to the monkey.
Once they have handed out 10 popcorn buckets correctly, they get to play a quick in-between game and then are promoted. Their goal is to become the manager. I’m sure it will not surprise you to hear that my students beg to play this game!
Kitten Hop
This silly game is another favorite of my students. They are playing a kitten who bounces from yarn ball to yarn ball. The computer says a sight word. That word is on one of the four yarn balls in front of the one your kitten is on.
Students love this game because they are racing three other kittens. The winner is the one who reaches the couch at the end of the game first. They have to be quick at matching the sight word their hear to the correct ball of year if they want to win!
Note: this game has options at the beginning for choosing a color, a name, etc. You will want to teach your students how to do this quickly (and set that expectation) so that they can do it independently.
Starfall Sight Words
Though I’ve already included a Memory Sight Word game, who doesn’t love Starfall? In this sight word game, the students need to determine if it is the same sight word by sight alone as it is not read until the match is made. But I love that they have three stars in the upper left corner to show their progress to the next level.
Once the student completes the game, they can move on to Level 2, where the sight words are slightly more difficult. The students love moving up a level to show their achievement!
My Reading Tools
In My Reading Tools, students see a kangaroo get several tools to become a better reader. The first tool is a flashlight. He uses it to highlight words in a dark cave.
This game is more challenging than the rest because students are asked to finish the sentence with the word spelled correctly. The computer reads the sentence. Then students hover their flashlight around the cave to find the word. 🔦
In this example, I was looking for the word “again.
” The other options in the cave were misspelled words “agin,” “agane,” etc. This game is perfect for students who are confidently reading many sight words and are ready for a challenge!

The word by word game is ideal for the whole family. It is also called Tik-Tak if they use the factory version with a dial and the ability to limit the time of thinking. Its essence is reminiscent of a game of "Cities". The main difference is that you don't need to write anything.
Yes, and the categories are expanding significantly.
Word by word board game sold in specialized stores. But you can make it yourself. It is enough to cut out cards from cardboard, which will indicate common topics or categories that combine some kind of concepts or objects. For example: Cities, Countries, Rivers, Animals, Writers, Singers, Female or Male names, etc. The more categories, the more fun and interesting the game will be.
Two or more players, ages 5 and up, may take part. For too young children, it is better to select the most commonly used categories. Such as names, types of vegetables, fruits, pieces of furniture, names of toys, etc.
Word-by-word or Tick-Tock in-store board game
The game can be bought in a store or ordered online. In the box you will find a drum with letters, cards with categories and an insert with rules. Choose any category and start playing. You need to say a word from the selected category, and then press the button in the form of a palm in the center of the drum.
The next clockwise player must have time in 10 seconds (while the clock on the drum is ticking) to pick up a word for any of the letters. Having said the word, he clicks on the selected letter, and immediately presses on the “palm” in the middle. Thus, the move is transferred to the next participant. He, in turn, names a word from this category by clicking on another letter that this word begins with. For example, choose the category Countries. You need to name different countries starting with those letters that are located in a circle. You can choose any letters, pinching them and making them inaccessible to other players.
As soon as the time has elapsed, an audible signal sounds. If the participant did not have time to answer, he is out of the game, and the move passes to another player. The winner is the one who called the correct word last. He takes his card. Whoever ends up with the most cards wins.
How to make your own word by word game
If you can't buy a ready-made game, you can easily make your own.
Cut out a circle from cardboard, on which mark up, as shown in the picture. Write letters. Used letters can be covered with buttons. Time can be tracked using an hourglass or a stopwatch. Cut out cards with category names on them. Topics can be very different. For example:
- Professions.
- Names of boys and girls.
- Kitchen utensils.
- Cities, Rivers, Countries.
- Plants, Animals.
- Insects. Birds.
- Seas, Dishes, Food.
- Furniture, Stationery, School supplies.
- Singers, Poets, Book titles, Writers.
- Electronics, Household appliances.
- Parts of the face, Parts of the body.
- Drinks, Articles of clothing.
In order to avoid disputes, immediately specify the permissible errors in the rules. For example, agree on whether adjectives can be used as the first word. After all, apple juice begins with the letter Y. And apple juice already begins with the letter C.
It is better to immediately stipulate prohibitions on such repetitions. Usually the game is more fun if the players are not too picky.

But if you want something more calm and quiet, then guessing the words will surely appeal to you. Children who already know the letters and can read can take part. And also everyone else.

What needs to be prepared to start
:
- ballpoint pens or pencils according to the number of participants;
- small rectangular pieces of paper on which one word can be written;
- small squares of paper on which we will write one letter at a time.
All the preparatory work can be entrusted to children who will be happy to prepare material for entertainment. Paper can be colored or the most common, taken from school notebooks.
Guess the word game rules
All participants sit around the table and take one rectangle. (By the way, for younger children, you can repeat geometric shapes and colors at the same time) On these leaves you need to write one word of 4 letters. Then the leaflet is rolled up and placed in front of you.
The first player is determined by counting or dice. All others are determined clockwise.
1 circle
Everyone takes one square of paper and writes any one letter on it. The first participant shows his letter to the next player in a clockwise direction. If this letter is in the word of the second participant, then he takes the letter for himself and puts it in front of him. If this letter is not in the hidden word, he puts it in the middle of the table.
There will be a "bank" or "bazaar", as in dominoes.
The turn passes to the second player. He gives the letter he wrote to the third player. He remembers if this letter is in his hidden word (the one that is rolled up and lies in front of him).
- If the letter is there, he takes the card for himself and places it openly in front of him. If this letter is not present, he must take the desired letter from the “bank” (provided that it occurs in the word he has guessed).
- While there is not a single necessary letter in the “bank”, then this participant himself writes the necessary letter and puts it in front of him in the right place. So, gradually, each of the participants gives his letter to the next friend in the circle.
- The letter does not fit, then the next participant must choose any letter he needs from the “bank”. When the circle has reached the first participant, everyone again writes one letter on the squares.
The letters must be put in the order in which they are located in the hidden words!
The game continues until all the words have been guessed.
If your word has already been guessed, you continue to write letters and pass them to your neighbor on the left. At some point, you guess what words your friends have guessed. And write the correct letter. But if you know the whole word at once, then say the answer during your turn. Guessed? So you take the bundle with the written word for yourself. This will give you as many points as there are letters in the guessed word.
The player with the most bundles wins this round. If no one can guess the word, then the participant who guessed it, move by move, writes the necessary letters himself and gradually inserts them into his word. If only one letter remains, and no one can guess the whole word, then the bundle remains with the owner.
"Guess the word" second level

In the second level, everyone writes a five-letter word. We roll up the papers again and put them next to us. Letters from the "bank" remain after the first level, so if your neighbor on the right does not give you the letter you need, you can take the letter you are looking for from the "bank".
You can only do this during your turn. Guess words of 5, and then of 6 or more letters. Each round you need to guess all the words of the participants. The player on the right has the advantage, but if he cannot guess the word of his neighbor, then the move passes to the next participant in a clockwise direction.
When words become quite complex, consisting of 6-7-8 letters, some of them may remain unsolved for a long time. Participants continue to write letters and give them to each other. But if no one guessed the word, then the player who conceived it himself gradually opens all the letters. Then the bundle with his word remains with him. At the end of the game, everyone counts the number of bundles. Whoever has the most guessed words wins. The number of letters is also counted. Each letter is worth one point. Score the most points to win!
You can guess the word from the clue if the participant wants to help you. He suggests one letter, but then he himself loses the opportunity to keep the word for himself.
So, for example, parents can help their children so that they do not lose interest by solving words that are too difficult.
Answers to all levels

At the end of the game, all participants unfold their pieces of paper and see which words they guessed. Each word is given as many points as there are letters in that word. For a word of 4 letters - 4 points, 5 letters - 5 points, etc. Thus, you can still teach children to count well. This educational game is useful for both children and adults.
Guess the word version for adults
If there are no children in your company, you can start right away with big words or even small phrases. The bank of letters in the middle of the table can be quite large. You don't have to write a new letter every time. At the end, collect all the letters in one box. So you get a game made by yourself.
And the next time you want to play, it will be enough to spread out all the letters in the middle of the table.
