The Royal Game of Ur - Board Games
The Royal Game of Ur is a board game of ancient Sumerian kings. Its creation is attributed to approximately 2600 BC. The game set includes a game board, dice and chips. The game is played by two players, the approximate time of one game is 30 minutes. The game develops strategy and counting skills. The Royal Game of Ur is also called the 20-square game. She appeared in Mesopotamia, but was popular far beyond its borders. The game was played regardless of wealth. The game was correlated with religious trends. Many believed that during the game they receive a message from the deities who predict their future for them. Some call the game the progenitor of backgammon. Until now, the game is very popular in India. For Europeans, the game was opened by archaeologist Leonard Woolley, who excavated at the Sumerian cemetery. The original rules of the game are known, thanks to a found clay tablet, on which was depicted a text describing the process of the game.

- 14 chips, 7 for each white and black player equally;
- playing field, consisting of 2 blocks connected by a bridge;
- pyramids acting as dice with two marked tops or sticks - dice, different colors on both sides;
- game rules.
Basic rules of the game
The number of moves was determined by throwing four-sided dice. Thus, the game was based not only on the development of strategy, but on a certain amount of luck. The game board has always been decorated with beautiful ornaments. It has various markings on it. Despite the preserved rules, playing the game is quite difficult, as it has a lot of nuances. A lot of game boards have been found. In the ruins of the Sumerian kingdom, many boards were found that looked very simple or, conversely, represented themselves as real works of art. The Sumerian kings played this game over 4,500 years ago. The game was played with 14 pieces of 7 for each player and three dice, thus the game of Ur can be considered the oldest game in the world with completely preserved rules on clay tablets and sets for the game.
A chip can leave the board only as a result of an accurate throw, that is, a number must fall out that will provide the chip with exactly 15 moves in total on one square. At the same time, only one chip can be located, if when throwing a chip there is no additional throw, even if a four has fallen, the opponent’s chip can be removed by moving to the same field. Then she will have to go to the field again. The chip that is on the socket is considered protected. An opponent cannot kill a piece that has entered the field of starting squares. In a game with 1-4 squares are considered safe, as well as safe fields where a piece cannot be killed. Enemies cannot stand on them. Many wordings and individual points of the rules between scientists cause serious disagreements. Some scholars believe that rosettes are unsafe fields, and a field for an additional throw. With some proposed rules, the game becomes too fast and not interesting.
The playing field in all versions of the games always contains sockets in the same places. Some boards depicted animals. Some scholars gave religious meaning to the markings on the field and compared the ornament with the cult of the goddess Ishtar, since the same 8-petal flowers were depicted on the gates of the Ishtar temple, as well as the ornament on the board. Thanks to this symbol on the rosettes of the game, historians have suggested that this drawing cannot mean something bad, that is, a fine or a pass, and therefore, most likely it was some kind of happy moment for the player. Most likely, all other symbols meant something important. The scientists also clearly determined that there were definitely rules in the royal game, since all the types of boards they found were made according to the same principle, with the same fields and drawings. The marks on the chips are only on the inside, and, therefore, during the game, the chip must be turned over. This is quite logical. On the board, pay attention to the two squares in the extreme lower corners of the small block. Scientists have suggested that this loop is for turning, and a wavy square in a square with painted marks, as it makes it clear to the inside of the chips that it is on this square that the chip needs to be turned over. And since the chips go in the opposite direction, it is logical to assume that the flip is needed in order not to confuse the chips with those that are just going to the turn, and those that are leaving it.
Making chips in a flat shape has also been perceived by scientists as an opportunity to stack chips on top of each other. The royal game of Ur was created in the Sumerian kingdom, which is known for its masters in sculpture. Uncomfortable from the point of view of gripping by hands and outwardly unattractive, flat chips were created flat, according to scientists, precisely because it was necessary to set chips in a pile. Otherwise, the figures would have been embossed, for example, as in chess. Scientists tend to think that on certain squares the chips acquired additional abilities, opportunities, or had to do something free or bonus. On the bridge, most likely, judging by the marks and logic, the chips of different opponents could be placed on top of each other. Such a variant is assumed since this is the narrowest place on the board, and it is not easy for two opponents to pass it without placing chips on top of each other. If the bridge gets blocked, then the game will become boring, as traffic can stop for a long time.
Object of the game
The object of the game is to move all 7 of your pieces to the opposite side of the board.
Preparation for the game
According to the rules, the players roll the dice in turn, the chips are placed on the board gradually from the first to the fourth square of the large block in accordance with the rolled dice. If the player rolled the number 4, then he gets the right to an additional move, but he must move not with the same piece, but with a different one.
Game board elements
Some ancient specimens were decorated with mother-of-pearl, azure and are now kept in famous museums in Europe. Ur refers to the type of racing games where players catch up and overtake each other and leave the game board. Complex markings are applied on the game board, the chips are made flat, marked. Modern games are played on wood, leather and other materials. There are also boards made of plastic.
Modern game manufacturers often create their own variants with different number of chips. The first set of rules found was written on a clay tablet in cuneiform, it was a complete set of rules for the game. Many of them have been reworked, originally there were 7 pieces in the game, and in the modern version they are often reduced to 5. The only thing that was not described on the board was how the pieces themselves moved. Also, the rules did not specify the original name of the game. Scientists who found an ancient instruction with the rules of the game created their own separate instruction based on it for modern games. Many scientists have contributed, trying to make the game more logical.
Game progress
Pyramids were used as dice, there were three of them, only 2 vertices were marked in them. The Sumerians most often made these bones from clay. Each player started the game with seven chips, the player who first threw an empty field on everyone in the pyramids had the right to move four cells. The player moved the chip along his side of the board, on a wider block moving towards the corner with the socket, then, moving to the adjacent square in the middle row, he moved along that side towards the small block, passing in the middle to the end, the chip turns towards its socket, as soon as he reaches it, he leaves the board. The entire path of one chip takes 14 cells on the 15th move the chip leaves the board. With these rules of the game, chips from neighboring teams can only meet in the middle lane of a small block. The game had such rules, according to the scientist Bel.
According to modern rules, the piece turns to the socket, makes a loop, goes around the entire perimeter of the small block, but does not leave the board, but returns to the middle line, moves in the opposite direction, then it reaches the base of the large block, turns back to the starting area and there already, gets the right to leave the game if it exactly stands on the exit cell. It turns out a full circle, which takes 27 moves, and on the 28th move the chip leaves the board.
It is logical to assume that 5 marks on the inside of the chip meant something, if there was no value, then the chips would be left without a picture, although this is also unlikely, since the board is painted very colorfully. If there were no value, presumably the chips would also be decorated with ornaments. Perhaps the markings mean only the upside down and that's it. Some squares are marked with eyes, in the modern version they are safe squares. The royal game of Ur is popular with many precisely because its rules are not fully understood. The thousand-year history of this game continues to excite the minds of people.
The game belongs to the class of racing, strategy. The playing field consists of 2 squares, the large square of the field consists of 12 squares 3x4 and the small one of 3x2. The squares are connected by a bridge of two squares.
Who is considered the winner?
The player whose chips completely leave the field first wins.
Interesting Facts
The Royal or Royal Game of Ur was popular in the Middle East. Interestingly, in the tomb of Tutankhamen, scientists found several boxes with a game very similar to Uru. It is known that the game of Ur was popular among all segments of the population. Scientists saw a sacred attitude to the game, in their opinion, the players believed that success in the game would help us in real life, and hitting certain squares was interpreted as predictions of deities or ancestors. The game ceased to be played during late antiquity, perhaps the game disappeared due to the fact that other popular games appeared. Scientists have discovered quite recognizable forms of the game in ancient Jewish settlements. They called her Asha and Kote. As in the original version, there were 20 squares, although their arrangement was slightly different.
Ancient rules were explained mainly by inscriptions on clay tablets found and dated by scientists to the second century BC. The tablet was written by the Babylonian scribe Itti-Marduk-balan, who wrote a set of rules. The plate was used as a basis. In total, two tablets were found, one of them was kept in a personal collection and was destroyed during the First World War. The other tablet is dated to an earlier period. On both sides, the game of the city of Uruk, which was played by the Sumerian kings, was drawn.
