Topics: Recommendations Screen Time

Turning your toddler onto TV for the first time can feel like a big, scary step. Once you introduce screens, is your kid ever going to want to go back to reading books? Are you going to hear nothing but the whiny whimsical voices and grating music of young kids' cartoons for the next few years? How will commercials, gender stereotypes, characters' bratty behavior, and the lure of a candy-colored on-screen world affect such impressionable young minds?

Yes, TV feels like a slippery slope. But if you're thoughtful about your choices and balance TV time with other activities, there's no reason not to allow your toddler to enjoy some quality entertainment. Start out slow with toddler-targeted shows that are gentle, brief, and full of age-appropriate content. Make an effort to find well-made programs that truly engage your toddler (if she's singing the songs to her stuffed animals, it's probably a good one!). Use the shows' subjects as starting points for pretend games and conversation. Co-view when you can, or follow up with questions about the shows when they're over. And take heart in the fact that kids can actually learn both preschool skills such as letters and numbers and social-emotional skills from well-chosen viewing.

When you're ready to turn on the TV for your tot, check out our reviews for quality and age-appropriateness before firing up the remote, and watch with your kid as much and as often as you can. Get started with a few of our faves right here.

Beat Bugs (Netflix)
Even parents will enjoy this sweet show inspired by the enduring magic of Beatles' songs. With messages of friendship and teamwork, there are a lot of great takeaways (and, of course, it's never too early to turn your kids onto good music). Check out the TV movie musical spin-off Beat Bugs: All Together Now for more Beatles-inspired fun.

Little Baby Bum (YouTube)
Little ears will perk up to this channel's familiar nursery rhymes and lullabies, like "Wheels on the Bus," "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes," and "Hickory Dickory Dock" sung by cute, animated animals. Many of the videos introduce early learning concepts like colors, numbers, and shapes, and at two to three minutes a pop, the videos are perfect for short attention spans (although there are curated playlists for longer viewing as well).

Nina's World (Hulu)
This lively show celebrates family, friendship, and diversity through content that incorporates English, Spanish, and even some American Sign Language. Simple elements such as Nina serving traditional meals and using Spanish phrases teach kids in a natural way.

Sesame Street (PBS)
Sesame Street remains a superstar of early childhood programing. Since 1969, Big Bird and friends have delighted and entertained toddlers around the globe. With engaging learning lessons, diverse characters, catchy music, and celebrity guests, you really can't go wrong with this enduring classic.

The Stinky and Dirty Show (Amazon Prime)
Truck-obsessed toddlers will go nuts for this sweet show about best friends Stinky the garbage truck and Dirty the backhoe based on the books by Jim and Kate McMullan. With minimal characters, it's easy for toddlers to follow the story, and despite what their names may suggest, Stinky and Dirty are terrific role models for kids and really demonstrate the power of teamwork.

Storybots Super Songs (Netflix)
In every episode of this music-centric spin-off of the popular Ask the Storybots program, you'll see multiple short music videos about various topics, from outer space to farm animals. It's an absolute visual treat, as it skips around effortlessly among various types of animation; one segment might be done with stop-motion puppetry, one may use traditional 2D animation, and the next might look like a watercolor painting.

Super Simple Songs (YouTube)
Music is key to engaging and entertaining young kids. In Super Simple Songs, cartoon characters and puppets act out nursery rhymes both familiar and new and encourage the kids to sing along. Similar to Little Baby Bum, many of the videos introduce early learning concepts like letters and counting.

Tayo the Little Bus (Hulu)
Originally developed for South Korea's Educational Broadcasting System, Tayo the Little Bus offers lots of fun adventures and positive lessons that toddlers can understand and enjoy with a focus on friendship, learning, and doing the right thing. For kids into vehicles, this one is a surefire winner.

Timmy Time (Disney Channel)
Timmy Time centers on a mischievous young lamb who's always looking for ways to fix the trouble he's gotten into with his friends and teachers at nursery school. From the engaging animation to the show's dialogue-free format, this one is perfect for toddlers because it packs each 10-minute story with important social lessons about responsibility, good sportsmanship, and fair play.

Word Party (Netflix)
Created by the Jim Henson Company, the interactive cartoon features four baby animals who ask the "big kids" watching from home for help answering questions. Along with vocabulary building, the series has positive themes that relate to emotional awareness, friendship, and getting along with others. (Warning: The "Word Party" jingle may drill itself into your head. At least your toddler will get a kick out of you humming it 24/7.)

What are the Best Educational TV Shows for Toddlers?

So what are the best educational shows that you can turn on for your toddler? Let’s take a look with some of our favorite recommendations.

Beat Bugs

Available on Netflix

What do you get when Australian and Canadian creators merge minds? A fabulous kids show inspired by darling bugs and the songs that make them groove, namely The Beatles. In Beat Bugs, five cute bugs—a ladybug, cricket, beetle, fruit fly, and a slug—teach little ones valuable life lessons from the safety of the bug’s backyard home.

Peg + Cat

Created by The Fred Rogers Company (so you know it’s good!) and inspired by the children’s storybook, The Chicken Problem, Peg + Cat follows a little girl, Peg, and her meowy-sweet kitty friend, Cat. These two tackle problems that require them to put their math and problem-solving skills to the test.

The Magic School Bus

If I do say so myself this is the single best education TV show for toddlers, because it’s straight outta my own childhood.

Climb on the old-school classic Magic School Bus, where adventure and science are waiting! Teacher Ms. Frizzle and her class are ready to explore science and your family gets to tag along. Touted for school-age kids, our family has found that it is engaging enough for toddlers too, so don’t leave them out of the learning opportunity.

Sid the Science Kid

Sid is a creative kid with a lot of questions. (That’s not just me saying it—it’s his tagline!) Every episode starts with one such query and then he sets off to find the answer. Developed by The Jim Henson Co., Sid the Science Kid melds the wonders of animation and puppetry for a fun and fabulous educational show.

Baby Signing Time

Available on DVD, for purchase on Amazon Prime, and smart TV subscription streaming

Emmy-nominated sign language expert Rachel Coleman launched Signing Time and Baby Signing Time after giving birth to her daughter, Leah, who is deaf. Coleman and her sister have gone on to produce many amazing episodes introducing sign language to parents, babies, toddlers, and older children as well.

Although this show used to be available on public television and streaming services, it is now only available for purchase. But, we couldn’t leave it out—it’s too valuable of a resource for little ones and definitely worth the investment.

Wild Kratts

You may remember the Kratt brothers from your own childhood—Chris and Martin Kratt have been teaching a young audience about animals for a long time. Their current show, Wild Kratts, animates the brothers as they adventure, fight nature’s villains, and teach amazing facts about wild animals and their unique habitats.

And honestly? This show is darn interesting–you’ll probably find yourself enjoying it right alongside of your kids!

Ask the StoryBots

Five curious little creatures lead little ones as they explore the world and answer questions kids commonly have. Follow along as Beep, Boop, Bing, Bang, and Bo explain big things in a tangible, kid-friendly way. And, be sure to enjoy the spin off series, “Storybots Super Songs” and during the holidays, “A Storybots Christmas.”

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

Join Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Pluto, and Goofy at their Clubhouse! With engaging music, fun stories, and introductory lessons in shapes, colors, numbers, and patterns, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse will help your toddlers master basics while falling in love with classic Disney characters. Plus, I can guarantee your toddler will love dancing along to that infamous opening theme song. (And yes, it will be stuck in your head all day, sorry.)

Hello Ninja

Based on the book by the same name, Hello Ninja chronicles Wesley and Georgie’s best friend adventures as they put their ninja skills to work and save the day. As a team, with their silly sidekick cat Pretzel, the trio problem solve and put their imagination to work.

Cocomelon

Note: Netflix doesn’t have an official trailer for Cocomelon on YouTube, so this is a third-party video.

Before joining Netflix, Cocomelon was a YouTube series for little learners (and it is still available there). Now, they have brought their darling nursery rhymes and original songs to Netflix, so more toddlers can enjoy J.J.’s adventures as he learns letters, numbers, animal sounds, and more.

As a mom who introduced Cocomelon to her toddler, I have to say: do this with caution, because your toddler will get hooked. It’s all my daughter wants to watch 24/7!

Word Party

Word Party invites viewers to help a friend group of walking and talking baby animals discover the answer to their questions. The little wallaby, panda, elephant, cheetah, and tortoise embark on familiar, daily activities with laughter and song with a focus on building vocabulary, exploring foreign language, and better understanding emotions.

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood

Inspired by Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, four-year-old Daniel Tiger and friends O the Owl, Katerina Kittycat, Prince Wednesday, and Miss Elaina learn throughout the day at home, school, and everywhere in between. Thanks to its Mister Rogers’ roots, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood teaches little ones social and emotional awareness through imagination and creativity as they grow and develop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much screen time is OK for my toddler?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends no television or screen time for children under the age of two. After that, less than two hours a day is ideal. It’s also important that when you do choose to tune in, you are particular about the shows you choose and watch with your children so you can explain, monitor, and engage with them as the content is delivered.

Is my toddler actually going to retain anything from educational TV?

Yes and no. Toddlers will always retain more from hands-on activities, but educational TV does provide a reasonable launching pad for both introducing and reviewing age-appropriate topics. This relates back to the importance of co-viewing. When you watch with your child, you are then equipped to complete the lesson full circle with a tangible experience. For example, “We saw Tilly trying peas for her lunch, let’s have peas together today when we eat next!” or “Daniel is practicing riding his bike, let’s turn off the show and practice yours together.”

Are cartoons better for toddlers than live action shows?

The comparison between cartoons and live action shows truly come down to personal preference. Some little ones will be absolutely transfixed by National Geographic animal shows, while others are only drawn to bright colors and cartoon characters. Across the board, almost all television shows geared towards toddlers are animated, but, as the parent, you definitely have the prerogative to screen and introduce appropriate live action shows too.

found something to do with the child

Author profile

I continue to work remotely and try to keep my child busy in order to earn easy money.

During the first week of self-isolation, I wanted to teach him how to play chess and study English in traditional “tutorials”. But too formalized classes turned out to be boring. After them, my five-year-old son said: "Mom, please, let's not play anymore."

Therefore, I have collected games that develop logic, thinking, memory, teach counting and writing, but at the same time are interesting for the child.

The logic and laws of physics in the game are not presented boringly and formally, but are explained in practice. The creators of the game marked it 0+, and even kindergarteners can really handle the very first levels. But then it can be difficult for younger students.
