Teaching Prepositions to Toddlers and Preschooler

Home » Teaching Prepositions to Toddlers and Preschooler

A toddler hides under the table showing a technique to teach prepositions.

Prepositions are little words with an important responsibility. These are what we use to indicate the location or position of things. They’re words like “in,” “under,” “behind” and “next to.

Some of these develop early, during the toddler years, like “in” and “on.” Others will still be tricky up until our kids enter school; words like “through” and “between.”

Because understanding a preposition means understanding the position of one thing in relation to another, I find it particularly helpful to teach these words by moving around, and, to start, I have the child move their own body into different relative positions.

This is what it looks like.

  • Using a laundry basket or large box that a child can get “in” and “out” of.
  • Stepping “on” and “off” a low stool or bottom stair.
  • Hiding “under” the bed and sitting “on” the bed.

When I start, I typically choose an opposite pair of words (in/on, on/off) or contrast a word I know they’ve mastered with the new one (on/under). I’m very repetitive! At home, you can start emphasizing the position by continually pointing it out.

  • “Your lovey is on the bed.
  • “Snack is on the table.”
  • “Daddy put a hat on his head.”

  • “Let’s put bubbles in the tub.”
  • “I’m putting laundry in the washer.”
  • “The blocks go in the basket.”

Children will understand a concept before they use it themselves. You can “test” their comprehension by giving them directions with the new preposition.

  • “Put your shoes under the bench.”
  • “Your car is in your backpack.”
  • “Set it on mommy’s chair.”

Curious to see if they can use it in a sentence? Play treasure/scavenger hunt!

Hide an object in the room, but then walk out. Have them find you and tell you where it was! (Or hide the object in a visible place they can’t reach so they have to tell you where to get it from.)

As they develop more understanding and have had real-world practice, I’ll begin pointing out position relationships in pictures too.

  • “Oh, look! He’s hiding in the closet!”
  • “The excavator is loading rocks in the dump truck.”
  • They parked the car next to the playground.”

Once they have these concepts in action, they’re ready to try a visual task. Preposition Readers give them opportunities for “perfect practice.”

Most preschool children I work with have a goal involving prepositions. Let me know which one(s) you’re working on in the comments below!

Looking for more ways to target speech and language goals with play? Join me for Putting Play to Work, a two hour seminar with lots of practical ideas!

How to teach preschool children with speech disorders to use prepositions

It has now been established that writing and reading disorders in children most often occur as a result of a general underdevelopment of such speech components as phonetic-phonemic and lexical-grammatical.

To prepare children for successful schooling, a system of lessons on the formation of oral speech is needed. In the process of working on the concepts of "sentence", "phrase", an important role is played by the correct use of prepositions by children in speech.

PREPOSITION - non-independent (functional) part of speech, indicating different relationships between words in a sentence. Therefore, the correctness and accuracy of use greatly expands the child's speech capabilities, affects literacy and prevents such serious speech disorders as dyslexia and dysgraphia.

Prepositions can be arranged into the following groups:

1. Prepositions (in, on, under, behind, around) - according to the location of objects or objects in space.

2. Prepositions (by, from, around, to, to, from) - the direction of action of objects or objects.

3. Prepositions (by, between, with, in front of, in front of, behind) - the relative position of objects relative to each other.

4. Preposition (y) - the presence of any property of an object or object.

5. Prepositions (for, about, about) - the direction of action on an object or object.

6. Compound prepositions (because of, from under).

Work on the understanding and use of prepositional constructions is carried out in accordance with the program of the preparatory group. When planning, the level of knowledge of children identified

when examined at the beginning of the year.

Great attention is paid to the selection of visuals, practical actions with objects, toys and aids (see the picture in the appendix).

The main place in the work is given to the game, since only in it the guys learn and consolidate their knowledge best of all.

First, it is necessary to give children the concept of PREPOSITION as a “small word” and its meaning in a sentence, i.e. without a certain pretext, it is impossible to understand the meaning of the sentence and perform certain actions. For example, children are invited to perform the following actions: put down a pencil ... a book; put the ball down.... chair; They cannot complete this task until the preposition is called.

Children complete the task faster if they use game techniques. For example, Dunno finds toys in the house (under the table, near the closet in the doll corner) and calls sentences with a certain pretext.

In the next lesson, children practice understanding the meanings of prepositions (in, on, behind, around, under). They play hide and seek with a toy cat. The guys say where she sits. For example, in the closet, on the closet, behind the closet, under the closet. Then they guess and name where the squirrel sits in the pictures. For example, under the tree, on the tree, behind the tree, in the hollow. In the same lesson, children learn to mark sentences with prepositions with symbols. They learn that a small word is indicated by a green stripe, but is shorter than a normal word and is written separately from other words in a sentence (see the picture in the appendix).

For example: on the board, a speech therapist marks with symbols sentences with the preposition “B”, which comes first (a squirrel sits in a hollow). Children on the tables indicate sentences (the squirrel sits in a hollow), where the preposition is in third place. Thus, the children are given the concept that a “small word” in a sentence can be placed anywhere.

The acquired knowledge about the correct use of prepositions in speech is reinforced in games. For example: in the game "Tanya the Confused", children help the girl Tanya find school supplies in the room that she did not put in their place. For this game, you can use an interactive whiteboard.

Game "Where does the bunny live?". In a three-story building, one apartment is free.

There are also such word games as: “What lies or stands in our group?”, “Where is your favorite toy”, “Where did you hide the toy”, etc.

Children can also be given various tasks. For example: "Come up with a sentence about any subject that is in our group with prepositions (in, on, for, under, about) and name the preposition. "

It is good to use pictures in which objects or objects can be moved. Or two pictures, where on one - the object does not move, and on the other - it moved. For example: The dog is in the booth and she came out of the booth. Butterfly on a flower, a butterfly flew away from a flower, etc.

After the children learn how to make sentences with prepositions based on the actions of objects or objects, the children are given pictures with one character, according to which sentences can be made with only one specific preposition. For example: The dog is sitting in the booth, the dog is leaving the house, the dog is sitting on the grass (see the picture in the appendix).

Children learn how to make sentences with prepositions based on a panel or an interactive whiteboard, which can be used to make sentences with prepositions. On the panel you can put pictures of animals, a house, a boy, the sun, clouds and birds. This panel is convenient in teaching children, since all the objects and pictures on it can be moved, showing how the action is carried out. The children make sentences with prepositions on a visual-effective basis.

Gradually, children learn to make sentences with different prepositions and without relying on visuals. They can label sentences with symbols or draw a diagram of a sentence with a pencil. They also like such a task as: “Make a sentence according to a given scheme, which is shown on the card”, such a card can be given to each child, and the children come up with various sentences with prepositions.

In order to develop the interest of children in the work, in addition to the above, such tasks were used as: “If you answer the question correctly, characters from the fairy tales “Teremok”, “Zayushkina’s hut” or “Turnip” and others will appear on the typesetting canvas.

Working with children became more difficult after the children learned to read. They made sentences from the pictures, choosing the right preposition, written in block letters on a small card. In the sentence read without a preposition, the children insert the necessary preposition instead of a dot. For this, cards with various offers are used. Nr: In the spring. the forest has many flowers.

All work with children on the topic "Preposition in a sentence" is carried out in close contact with educators.

Applications for work can be downloaded here .
