Documents / Resources
Published implies: E33340, Playskul, Playskool Street Sezam sings the alphabet Elmo 90,000, what do you know. a platform like Windows 8 catches on when high-end children's games start to appear. The trendy little ones with crappy graphics and designs come first, followed by professional games featuring popular characters. For example, characters like Elmo and the cast of Sesame Street! nine0014ABC Elmo Loves is definitely in the professional category as it is an extremely reliable educational game for preschoolers and kindergarteners. The game is available as a premium app for Windows 8 and RT. Skip past the break for our quick impressions
Introducing the alphabet
The main interface in Elmo Loves ABC is a window surrounded by the letters of the alphabet. In this window, authentic clips of Elmo and the Sesame Street Gang live will help young players learn the basics of the English alphabet. nine0014
After selecting a letter, Elmo's voice will ask the children to trace the uppercase and lowercase versions of that letter. After successfully completing both versions of the letter, the application will display three photos that start with that letter. Press one and a short video of an object or person will appear in the main window.
Children can take a break from studying letters by moving the slider on the right side of the window to the pencil icon. This launches a coloring mode where budding artists can paint on a blank canvas using 11 colors. Other than finger painting, there are no tools, but the game allows kids to save their photos by tapping the save icon. nine0014
Move the slider to the bottom position (magnifying glass) to play hide-and-seek with the selected letter. The window will be covered with items such as balloons for the children to remove. Swipe across the clutter and three objects starting with the target letter will be revealed. A decent minigame, but performance is a bit slow on the original Surface RT.
More interesting features
Click on the gear in the lower left corner of the screen to access several additional modes and functions. There are four alphabet-related songs with videos to sing along, including the traditional Alphabet Song. nine0014
Move the clunky little slider next to the video icons to the right and you'll start a more advanced letter game. Elmo will ask your child to choose the correct letter or object starting with that letter from a box of four options. This is a kind of quiz for children who have already taken some of their letters.
Elmo Loves ABC is a great educational game for Windows tablets and PC users. While the menus and clunky sides, the artistic design and activities are all bright and intuitive. Kids who love Sesame Street (as they should!) will be thrilled to explore their letters and watch Elmo, Cookie Monster, Kermit and other Sesame Street characters in the included videos. nine0014
These videos result in a rather large file size, which may explain why Sesame Workshop did not publish the game on Windows Phone. But if your child is age-appropriate for the material and has access to a Windows tablet, then ABC Elmo Loves is worth downloading.
