The best classic cat stories

Previously, we’ve offered our pick of classic cat poems, and that post proved so popular that in this post we’ve set ourselves the task of compiling a top ten list of the best cat stories. The classic cat stories below range from the comical to the horrific, the tragic to the heart-warming – but they all have one thing in common, that they are purr-fect stories about cats (sorry, we’ll stop short of making a tail/tale pun here).

Edgar Allan Poe, ‘The Black Cat’.

One of Poe’s most unsettling tales, ‘The Black Cat’ actually contains two black cats – although the second may be a ghostly reincarnation of the first. An unstable narrator tells of how alcoholism and an increasing short temper led him to harm his pet black cat – with devastating results for everyone (not least the cat). To say any more than this would be to risk mentioning spoilers…

E. Nesbit, ‘The Cat-hood of Maurice’.

After he abuses the family pet, a young boy named Maurice gets a taste of what it’s like to live as a cat in this wonderful short story from one of English literature’s finest storytellers for young readers. The story is included in Nesbit’s 1912 collection The Magic World.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, ‘The Brazilian Cat’.

Imagine being trapped in a cage with a giant jaguar, which you know is going to start taking a ravenous interest in you sooner or later. This is the setup for this nail-biting story by the master storyteller and creator of Sherlock Holmes. The story is one of many classics included in the affordable collection Tales of Unease (Tales of Mystery & The Supernatural).

Rudyard Kipling, ‘The Cat that Walked by Himself’.

One of Kipling’s Just So Stories (1902), and the longest tale in that classic collection of origin stories, ‘The Cat that Walked by Himself’, as the title suggests, describes the cat’s independent spirit and refusal to be fully tamed.

Saki, ‘Tobermory’.

Few short story writers have written so well about children and animals, but Hector Hugh Munro (1870-1914), better known as Saki, could write about both. ‘Tobermory’ is about a man who teaches a cat to talk, with disastrous results: the cat begins to tell the ‘respectable’ people at the party exactly what he thinks of them, and to gossip about everyone. Beware, though: cat-lovers may not like the ending.

P. G. Wodehouse, ‘Good-bye to All Cats’.

Wodehouse (1881-1975) was a master of comic fiction, and the best introduction to the world of Wodehouse’s brilliantly comic prose, Weekend Wodehouse

, contains this classic cat story from 1934, a delightfully farcical piece about how Freddie Widgeon’s stay at a country house goes terribly wrong thanks to … cats.

Fritz Leiber, ‘Space-Time for Springers’.

Leiber (1910-92), pioneering SF and fantasy author, was a cat person. He loved them, and wrote about them in a number of his short stories. This classic cat story centres on Gummitch, a remarkably clever ‘superkitten’ with an IQ of 160 and big ambitions. Ever looked at your cat and thought it must be sitting there thinking how much cleverer than you it is, and how it could dominate the world if it could only talk? This story will strike a chord with you.

Italo Calvino, ‘The Garden of Stubborn Cats’.

A woman lives alone – except for all the cats. When a lawyer comes to try to draw up an offer to buy up her house so that the land can be developed, the cats attack the lawyer, tearing up the contract – stubbornly refusing to give up their territory. A story that is by turns amusing and unsettling.

Ursula Le Guin, ‘Schrödinger’s Cat’.

A strange and at times frustrating story – postmodern in many ways – by one of science fiction and fantasy’s most acclaimed authors, ‘Schrödinger’s Cat’ is concerned with something that preoccupied Joseph Conrad: the reality of our perceptions of the world, and the link between language or storytelling and ‘the real’. Le Guin’s story is named after the famous thought-experiment designed to explain quantum physics – the cat in the box may be alive or dead, and until you open the box you have to act as though the cat is both alive and dead – and, sure enough, the story climaxes with such a speculation about a literal cat in a box.

Angela Carter, ‘Puss in Boots’.

Angela Carter’s classic book The Bloody Chamber And Other Stories

, in which she offers her own distinctive take on classic fairy tales, features this idiosyncratic retelling of Puss in Boots, a story dating back as far as the sixteenth century. Carter herself said that ‘Puss in Boots’ was ‘the first story that I wrote that was supposed to be really funny, out-and-out funny’. Told by Figaro, a cat living in Italy, the story fuses commedia dell’arte tropes with its genuinely laugh-out-loud feline narrative voice.

A number of these classic cat stories are included in Diana Secker Tesdell’s anthology, Cat Stories (Everyman’s Library POCKET CLASSICS). For more book suggestions, see our pick of the best books for cat-lovers.

Amazing cat stories for International Cat Day

International Cat Day, August 8, is a day to celebrate all things feline. From fostering and adopting to supporting trap-neuter-return efforts, there are a lot of ways to save more cats and all the things we love about them: tiny triangle kitten tails, soft little toe beans, ridiculously miniscule cat teeth, rumbling purrs and all.

As we move toward making the entire country no-kill by 2025, cats need all the help we can give them. Two-thirds of the 625,000 pets killed each year in America's shelters are cats, so saving more kitties is a top priority.

Every cat saved is another story to share and inspire more people to do whatever they can to help the cats in their communities. This year for International Cat Day, we’ve gathered some of our favorite cat stories from the year for your enjoyment and inspiration.

Cat lives his best life on two legs

When Rexie Roo was brought into a shelter in rural Utah, his outlook wasn’t looking great. He was underweight and matted, with both front legs broken. He had no microchip, hadn’t been neutered and had the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). If he didn’t get emergency veterinary care, the next best option was to humanely euthanize him. When the shelter sent out a plea for help, Best Friends in Utah answered.

Ultimately, his front legs had to be amputated in order to save his life. He was on a lot of medication for infection and pain, and needed help getting to the litterbox and learning to walk with just his two back legs. But soon enough, the spirited and very food-motivated cat was up and moving. He was getting around with ease, even jumping (all on his own) onto couches and beds to snuggle. And then, his life got even better: Rexie Roo got adopted.

Cat with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome finds home through social media

When Bubbles, a cat with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome arrived at the Sanctuary, many modifications were made to her private room to keep her safe and comfortable. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a rare condition that affects the production of collagen and causes skin to become extra stretchy, loose and fragile. Corners of the room were covered with pool noodles, plexiglass was put up to protect her from the rough walls and catio fencing, and she had lots of soft bedding and blankets to cushion her favorite spots.

When Cici Ogden, a young woman with the same condition learned about Bubbles through a post on Instagram, she fell in love. The little cat was perfect. Cici brought her home, set up a social media account for her new feline family member and filled it with adorable pictures of their life together.

Paralyzed cat gets moving again

Solarflare might just be the “chillest” cat at the Sanctuary. Before he came to Best Friends, he survived being hit by a car and a broken back, which took away the use of his back legs, as well as the ability to go to the bathroom by himself. But he’s never let his condition get him down, and he’s always excited for a yummy treat or a good scratch behind the ears. He loves snuggling up for a nap with human and cat friends alike, and he loves lounging in the sun for hours. Nothing seems to bother the sweet orange tabby.

Recently, with the help of many different forms of physical therapy, Solarflare is starting to move his long-paralyzed back legs again. Hydrotherapy, laser therapy, electro-acupuncture and foot massages are helping him gain muscle and some control again. He’s enjoying butt scratches, moving his tail around and he’s even going to the bathroom on his own again.

Love for unforgettable cat leads family to foster dozens of kittens

Sometimes we meet animals who leave a profound impression on us ― animals who change our lives, even if we know them only for a short time. For Jill Williams and her family, that special animal was Dexter. They adopted Dexter when he was already 20 years old and he quickly became a huge part of their lives. When he passed two years later, everyone felt the loss. Even the family dogs seemed to feel the missing presence of their cat friend.

When Jill and her son saw a flyer looking for foster families for kittens, her son begged her: “Please? We should do it for Dexter.” It was their love for Dexter that brought them into a life full of late nights and general kitten chaos. In his memory, they’ve helped save and take care of more than 60 kittens, and they don’t have any intention of stopping anytime soon.

Cat charms adopters from way more than six feet away

Mr. Geppetto is a charmer who’s beloved for his playful personality and fondness for long, snuggling naps. But despite his charm, he still was not getting picked by potential adopters visiting the Best Friends Lifesaving Center in Los Angeles. When COVID-19 shelter-in-place procedures were announced, Mr. Geppetto, along with many other animals, was moved to foster care. That’s when virtual adoptions through video conference calls were implemented to introduce animals to prospective families.

This was Mr. Geppetto’s chance to shine, and shine he did. When Caroline Anderson and Vince Zalkind (who were married at a marionette theater) looked to Best Friends to find a cat to adopt, they felt Mr. Geppetto was the perfect match. From his name and glowing foster notes to his long history of being overlooked, it was like fate had brought couple and cat together. And when he finally went home, he wasted no time settling in.

Saving cats at Palm Valley Animal Society in Texas

When Star was picked up outside of her south Texas home (where she had lived for more than 10 years) and brought to the nearest animal shelter, it could have meant the end of the beloved white cat’s life. But thanks to a brand-new community cat program, she was returned to her family safe and sound. Not only was she reunited with her human, Mayra, but it resulted in Mayra getting involved with the program to help save even more cats.

Star isn’t the only cat whose life was saved by the Palm Valley Animal Society program. Prior to its inception, the shelter was taking in more than 10,000 cats a year, but only saving about 19% of them. With the new program’s trap-neuter-return efforts, the save rate for cats at Palm Valley since the beginning of 2020 has been above 90%, far beyond expectations set when the program began.

Barn life is the best life for these two cats

For some cats, the ideal life is curling up on the sunny side of the couch and watching birds and squirrels through the window. For others like Meow and Leopold, it’s having the entire world open to explore, dirt to roll in and no walls to hold them back. For those cats, placement as a “working cat” or rodent deterrent (in places like barns and warehouses) is the perfect alternative. It’s a way for them to enjoy the great outdoors, to be well cared for and to have a safe, cozy place to sleep.

Meow has been the resident barn cat at Horse Haven for 20 years, ever since she showed up one day as a black-and-orange blur darting between buildings. After she was humanely trapped, spayed and vaccinated, it was clear she was not interested in the indoor life. Since she already knew her way around Horse Haven and seemed intent on staying, she became part of the team — both as a kind of mascot and as a very good rodent deterrent for the feed room. When a new area was built for Horse Haven a mile down the road, it was time to add another barn cat to the family. And Leopold was just the right guy for the job.

Girl’s toy cats come to life

Eight-year-old Mila Sano has loved cats for as long as anyone can remember. On a trip to Costa Rica with her family, she was busy making friends with every street cat she came across and wishing she could bring each and every one home with her. Of course, the complicated logistics of flying dozens of cats home from another country would prevent that from happening. Instead, her grandparents gifted her two plush cats, who quickly became Mila’s favorite toys.

Mila carried the two stuffed animals everywhere with her. When she started up a cat-sitting business that included making flyers and business cards, her parents took notice of how responsible she was. They surprised her with two real cats that looked so much like her stuffies that it brought them to life. They caught the emotional reveal on camera, and now everyone in the family is in love with the new additions.

And in our yard.

A fairy tale for adults and more.

Mother cat gently licked the sleeping kittens. When the kittens finally fell asleep, she quietly got up and went about her adult business. There were four kittens. And they slept, huddled in a tight ball, so it was warmer and calmer.

But one kitten woke up, yawned and opened its sky-blue eyes wide, trying to take in the whole world around. After a little thought, he climbed through the sleeping tangle of brothers and sisters, to the exit. The second kitten woke up from the crush, turned its head, looked around and crawled after the first one. The two of them, on their not yet fully strengthened paws, climbed over the board that separated their ancestral lair under the porch from the outside, such an interesting world. The kittens froze from the huge, slightly frightening, seemingly limitless space. They sat together, clinging to each other in fear, and looked with all their eyes at the picture that opened to them. A strange cat approached them slowly. The kittens trembled in fear, but the kind, almost angelic, round tangerine-colored eyes of the cat did not inspire fear, and the kittens calmed down, looking at the unusual adult cat with interest. She had no ears, which made the big round head of the cat even rounder and bigger. The cat was wearing a magnificent velor coat of a chic saturated gray with blue color. Her slowness and good-natured appearance finally dispelled the fear in the kittens. The cat sniffed the kittens and sat down next to them.

- Aunt, who are you? – bravely asked a kitten named Mr-rr. He, as a boy, decided to show his sister how brave he was, that he was the first to enter into a conversation with an unfamiliar adult cat aunt.

- I am a cat, just like you and your mother, - she answered calmly - My name is Lop.

- What is your name? – in turn asked the velor cat Wisloushka.

“My name is Mr-rr,” answered the kitten.

– And I’m Fr-rr, – the little cat squeaked, and continued, emboldened, taking an example from her little brother – No, our mother is not like you.

– What is your mother like? Wisloushka asked.

-Our mother's ears stick out pointy, and you have no ears at all.

- I also have ears, but they are pressed tightly against my head, see? Because I am a Scottish fold cat.

The kittens looked with interest at the kind aunt-cat with ears pressed to her head.

Two more kittens came up from the depths of the lair. They heard the conversation of brother and sister with Lop-Ear.

– My name is Tr-rr, and this is our little sister Khrr-rr, – a kitten-boy introduced himself and introduced his sister, – that’s what our mother called us.

"Your mother came up with wonderful names for you," said the cat Laptail affectionately.

Not far away was a young cat in a bright red and white suit. The kittens' eyes widened in surprise. The young cat's ears were bent back, as if turned inside out.

- And who is this? – with astonishment asked Khr-rr.

- This is the American Curl, - Loptail said slowly, - you see, his ears are arranged quite differently.

- Why?

- Because he is such a breed.

– Does he live in America?

- No, he lives in our yard...

- Oh, what a beautiful aunt! - interrupted the cat Fr-rr.

Everyone looked in the direction of her gaze. There she walked with a graceful gait in a shiny dress of dark chocolate color, which shimmered in the sun with an adamant gleam.

– Would you like me to introduce you to her? Wisloushka asked.

“We want,” the kids said in unison, dumb with delight.

Lop called the beauty in a friendly way. She came up and lay down next to the kittens, who did not hide their admiration.

“My name is Havana,” their new acquaintance introduced herself simply and sweetly. – I am from the breeds of the oriental group.

The kittens were flattered to meet such beautiful cats as beautiful Aunt Havana and kind Aunt Wisloushka.

- And what other breeds are there? - the kids got really bold.

Havana answered them with her pleasant, slightly drawn-out and velvety voice: “There are a lot of breeds of cats in the world. We will not tell you about all of the Wisloushka, it is a very long time, but we will try to tell you about those who live in our yard.

– Here, look, on the second floor, the cat Korat is sitting on the window. This is a very ancient breed of cat. The Thai people, and she comes from Thailand, call her a “cat of happiness”, but be careful with her, she only recognizes her people as owners and can tolerate the same korats as herself, but she doesn’t get along with other breeds and other animals, - began her Aunt Havana's story.

The kittens looked at Korat, a dark gray cat with a silver sheen, who was watching the events in the yard with interest from the window on the second floor. Korath glanced at the kittens, and her gaze passed coldly and indifferently over the kittens. But when a human woman approached her from the depths of the room, Korat's bright light green eyes began to radiate warmth and tenderness for her mistress.

- And over there, by the bench, on the contrary, there is a Siamese cat, she is also from Thailand - Havana continued her story, - She, like me, is an oriental group of cat breeds. She is also very devoted to her human owners, but also treats other cats favorably. We are all like this, oriental cats, we can be friends even with dogs, if they do not offend us.

The kittens looked with interest at the unusually colored cat, the Siamese was all light, and only the muzzle, paws and tail were dark. And deep blue eyes sparkled with a crimson glow.

Many people believe that Siamese cats are evil, their eyes are filled with blood from anger and therefore they sparkle with a red blood sheen. But our kittens cannot be fooled by such fears. They naturally know that in cats there is a light-reflecting layer of cells behind the retina called the tapetum, and in blue-eyed cats it is crimson, while in other cats it is yellow or green, depending on the color of the eyes. Tapetum is very necessary for cats. It can reflect the light falling at night from the stars in the sky, and at the same time, the light reflected from its own eyes, the cat sees perfectly in the dark. Therefore, in fact, Siamese cats are kind and affectionate. They are just very loyal to their owners. And the fact that their eyes sparkle with a red glow does not mean anything, much less their non-existent anger.

- An interesting color for the Siamese. the kids were surprised.

- This color is called pointy, when the protruding parts of the body are painted in a darker color. - continued Havana - But there are other breeds with such colors. Perhaps the most famous are the Neva Masquerade, Himalayan, Ragdol and Sacred Burma, although Burma always has white socks and gloves on its paws. All these cats have blue eyes.

- And, by the way, over there, on the first floor, on a bed made especially for him, there is a large and unrealistically beautiful unusual cat Ragdol, - Wisloushka contributed to the story about the cat inhabitants of the yard.

- Why is it unusual? the kittens asked intrigued.

- He has reduced pain sensitivity, he does not feel pain so much. He loves his owners very much, and more than other breeds, he loves to sit on the hands of a person.

“How great!” Fr-rr murmured, “because Tr-rr stepped on me last night, it hurt me a lot, and I cried so much, I cried so much! .. Until I fell asleep again.

“Yes, a really beautiful and very big cat,” agreed Trrrr.

– Oh, what kind of big guy is this, with such a stern face and menacing look, coming straight towards us!? - Xrrrr squeaked in fright and, just in case, hid behind Wisloushka, pointing to a hefty cat approaching them with a look that did not bode well.

“Don’t be afraid,” Aunt Wisloushka hurried to reassure the kids, “this is the Maine Coon, he is very kind, he doesn’t swear with anyone and loves everyone, although his appearance is so severe.

The kittens already without fear looked at the outwardly severe and big kind Maine Coon cat, with long tufts on the ears like a lynx and the heavy gaze of a self-confident wild beast.

“Of course, whoever wants to quarrel with him,” Trrrr whispered in a barely audible voice, “Even the smell comes from his strength.

Aunt Havana, hearing the baby's whisper, smiled into her mustache.

- Hello, dear neighbors and such wonderful kids. What are you talking about? - Politely greeted everyone, including the little kittens, asked the Maine Coon.

The polite address of the majestic stern giant to ordinary kittens won the hearts of the good-natured Lop and the beautiful Havana, and the kittens were completely delighted that such a serious adult cat greets them like this, politely and easily talks to them.

“Yes, we are telling the kids about the inhabitants of our yard,” Havana answered in a velvety voice.

- Oh! How interesting1 - the Maine Coon was sincerely delighted - and maybe I'll listen a little.

Of course, no one had any objections. The Maine Coon lay down next to him, with a proud look and a majestic pose of a royal person.

Under the protection of such a powerful beast, the kittens felt confident and no longer flinched, even if they heard the barking of dogs nearby or the trampling of people passing by.

Little Mr-rr, frankly looking directly into the eyes of the Maine Coon, admiringly with childish naivete said: “When I grow up, I will definitely become like you, Uncle Maine Coon”, which confused the huge strong cat and conquered his kind big heart.

- You will definitely become, baby, - and, thinking for a moment, he suggested - let's be friends with you!

Mr-rr's breath hitched with happiness.

– What about me? - in despair, almost crying said Tr-rr.

- Well, of course, with you and with your sisters, - the Maine Coon rather added.

- Oh! And what are these two beauties walking along the fence one after the other! Fr-rr suddenly exclaimed enthusiastically.

Everyone looked at the fence where two beautiful cats were walking. Ahead is red with a black tint and rich green eyes, behind it is snow-white. They were almost the same, differing only in their outfits.

- The red cat is Somali, and the white Turkish Angora, - Havana began to say, - Angora is an old breed, it is the national pride of Turkey, where it comes from.

- But Somalia, - Lop-tail picked up, - the breed is relatively young, and Angora played an important role in its creation. Somalia took the best qualities of the breeds that took part in its creation. She is affectionate, independent, graceful, devoted and very beautiful.

Suddenly, a graceful lean cat with green eyes in a fur coat of a warm bronze hue with clear small black spots came out from around the corner. The kittens flinched in surprise, and little Hrrrr squeaked with fear: “meow.”

- I'm not meow, I'm MAU, Egyptian MAU, - a beautiful fit cat sang, and, turning to adult cats, he asked, - Have you seen Munchkin?

- More recently, he was at the pond, behind the house, together with the Selkirk Rex, - in his unusual, cooing manner of speaking, the Maine Coon answered, - we went to him together.

The cats said goodbye and left with their tails up in a businesslike way. The rest of the company silently watched them go.

Aunt Havana, Aunt Wisloushka, Fr-rr squeaked in a pleading voice, tell us about the Egyptian MAU.

“And about Munchkin and Selkirk Rex,” added Xrrr.

– Well, – Havana said, – Egyptian Mau, one of the most ancient breeds of cats, which has not changed at all over many millennia. Temples were dedicated to these cats, like gods. Egyptian Mau are extremely fast. Still, because these cats can reach speeds of up to 58 kilometers per hour. This ability, combined with excellent hearing and vision, makes Egyptian Mau excellent hunters. But for the sake of completeness, I will say that there is also a breed of Mau cats. This is the Arabian Mau…

– What is a pond? Mr-rr

suddenly asked for no reason. “Don’t interrupt,” Aunt Havana said sternly.

– And yet, what is a pond?

- A pond, it's such a small body of water.

I don't like water.

- Not all cats do not like water, many love it very much, some even like to swim. The pond is beautiful, various aquatic plants grow there, frogs and crucians swim...

– Oh, I love fish!

- You're interrupting me again! But since you are such a nasty boy that you constantly interrupt me, then I won’t tell you anything,” Havana was offended.

The little kittens are sad. There was an awkward pause.

Some cat ran past and… chirped something. The kittens' eyes widened in surprise.

- This is the Anatolian Cat, or it is also called the Turkish Shorthair. - said Aunt Wisloushka - This breed is also considered the national pride of the country of Turkey, as well as the Turkish Van. Anatolian almost does not know how to meow, she speaks as if a bird chirps, for this feature she is sometimes called a chirping cat. And the Anatolian Cat is very musical, she even knows how to dance to the music herself.

- At the same time, her genotype is closest to the "wild type" genotype, added Havana, unable to bear the silence.

– Are there breeds that are the pride of other countries, not only Turkey? Frrr asked, a little embarrassed.

- Of course. In Canada, for example, this is Cymrick. In France, Chartreuse. In Italy, the Ceylon Cat. Yes, many breeds of cats are considered the national pride of different countries. Often breed names speak for themselves. Singapore, Ukrainian Levkoy, St. Petersburg, Canadian, Donskoy Sphinxes. British, Scottish, Brazilian, Persian, Siberian. Norwegian Forest. There are many, many such breeds. Although there are exceptions. For example, Russian Blue or, for example, Sokoke. Sokoke is also called the Kenyan Forest, but in the country of Kenya itself, such a breed is not bred. The British also bred the Russian Blue, and the breed gained the greatest popularity in the Scandinavian countries and in the Czech Republic.

“Sorry, but you forgot about the Munchkins,” Mr-rr reminded him politely, without interrupting.

“Munchkins,” Wisloushka continued the story, “these are such taxi-cats. They have short legs. The breed is still quite young and the breed standard is still at the stage of formation, but such cats have already gained popularity in the world. The nature of Munchkin cats has its own characteristics. Small paws do not allow them to climb high, but do not interfere with being active below - they run well, but they just don’t know how to jump. Munchkins love to sneak small objects into a secluded corner unnoticed. In general, the character of these cats is calm and friendly.

- The Selkirk Rex is also a young breed, - Gavana supported the story, - and has already managed to gain popularity. It differs in that their wool curls like a lamb. And they do not like loneliness at all, Therefore, they are ready to be friends with everyone, just not to be alone.

An interesting couple passed by. Cat and cat. Gray coats with a blue tint and bright green eyes. In a cat, the fur on a fur coat was short and smooth, while in a cat, on the contrary, the fur was fluffy and long.

- This is just the Russian Blue cat and the Nibelung cat, - as if answering the silent question of the kittens, Havana began to explain, - And although these are different breeds, they are very similar, and, you see, very beautiful. The Nibelung is said to be a long-haired variant of the Russian Blue breed.

“Wow, how many cat breeds we have,” Fr-rr said thoughtfully.

“Quite right, my dear little one,” Aunt Wisloushka said affectionately, “but we haven’t seen all the breeds yet. There are many beautiful interesting breeds of cats in the world, and they are all so different. There are funny little Singapura cats, there are beautiful Snowshoes with white socks, there are coal-black Bombay cats, playful and smart Abyssinians, fluffy Persians, Chantilly Tiffany or Bengal, Chartreuse or LaPerm ...

“There are wonderful friends of Buddhist monks, the Sacred Burmese,” Havana continued, giving Visloushka a breath, “there is the pride of Russia, the Neva Masquerade, the Kuril Bobtail, there are other tailless bobtails, and even hairless sphinxes.

- What, no tail and no hair at all? the kittens were surprised.

- Yes, exactly.

After such an interesting conversation, time passed unnoticed

Well, that's it, we have to go, - adult cats and kittens began to say goodbye.

– Can you tell us about other breeds?

- Absolutely, only next time.

Havana and Lop-Ear left, and the kittens discussed what they saw and heard for a long time, until their mother Cat came. The kittens vied with each other to tell her how much they had learned today. And Mother Cat listened to them, squinting with happiness, and gently purred to the kittens, repeating their names Mr-rr, Fr-rr, Tr-rr, Khr-rr.

– Mom, what breed are we? Fr-rr asked through her sleep.

The eyes of all the kittens opened in anticipation of an answer.

- We are the most common and absolutely beloved breed - the Domestic Cat, - said mother beloved cat.
