What’s this game about anyways?
Use Your Words is a game that invites players to respond to a variety of mini-games and prompts with the funniest answers they can think of! Players play using their phones and tablets as controllers, making gameplay seamless and quick to pick up. Players who get stumped can use one of the hidden “House Answers” to lay a trap for their fellow players once it’s time for everyone to vote for their favorite.
How is it played?
The game itself is run on a PC or game console, and players play using any HTML5 enabled device (like a phone or a tablet). Just navigate to our game webpage (wordsgame.lol) in your browser, enter the on-screen Room Code, and you’re in the game!
How many players are supported?
We support 3-6 players as part of the core game, but up to 1000 people can join as spectators and vote on which answers were the grossest, most offensive, or the funniest.
When’s it coming out?
It’s out now for all current-gen consoles, Nintendo Wii U, and Steam for PC and Mac!
How is this game different from “Quiplash”?
The short answer is “More ways to play!” Use Your Words lets you add your own subtitle to a film clip, create a headline for a photo, and we’ve got even more ways to play coming in our planned DLC packs. Beyond that–while we don’t know our competitor’s process–we are rigorous about only keeping prompts that spark funny answers. We’re committed to making a game that can truly guarantee big laughs every time.
What if I can’t think of anything funny to write?
You can always press the “house decoy” button and borrow one of our house answers for half-points.
How do house decoys and house answers work?
In every round, the game automatically throws in one house answer along with players’ answers (we’ve written a bunch of house answers for every prompt). If you decide to press the house decoy button instead of writing your own answer, you get to use one of our house answers for yourself.
If a player votes for your house decoy, you get 500 points (a vote for an original answer gets 1000 points). The house decoy button is a bit of a gamble, but it’s a trusty failsafe for when your mind goes blank.
Is there a family-friendly version of the game?
Yes! In our options menu, you can turn on “Family Mode” which filters out “adult” prompts and house answers.
Who composed your music?
Most of our soundtrack comes from a 1960 instrumental album called “The Sound Of Speed” by composer Bob Thompson.
Can I stream and make money streaming this game?
Yes! The game is perfect for streamers and Let’s Play-ers and we actively encourage our players to share their experiences. We even have a “Let’s Play Mode” that switches the game to use Content ID-friendly music.

Will this game be localized to other languages?
We’ve released a free French content pack update on Steam, Switch, and Playstation! The update will not be included in the Xbox version.
Who made this game?
Use Your Words was developed by Smiling Buddha Games, a partnership between Brent “Brentalfloss” Black and Julian Spillane. In addition to Brent and Julian, our core team is comprised of lead programmer Derek Gallant, and art director Kai Salminen. Thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, Use Your Words 2 will be made for Switch.
Smiling Buddha Games started seeking funding about a month ago. While the project itself met its $40,000 goal, a Switch-specific Stretch goal sought $50,000. The good news is that this mark has been reached as well with just over a day remaining in the campaign.
Use Your Words 2 builds on the success of the original as another party game. The team is promising twice the amount of mini-games, more content, and new features. The core idea is that Use Your Words sets up a joke, and it’s up to players to fill in the punchline. If you’re a fan of The Jackbox Party Pack, this may very well be right up your alley.
Included games are Blank-o-matic, Book It!, Sub The Title, Extra Extra!, Survey Says, Sign Me Up!, Out of the Question, Fill in the Blank, and Letterheads. New features include power-ups, the ability to choose which mini-games to play, an improved Spectator Mode, and more.
As for why Smiling Buddha Games decided to make Use Your Words 2 rather than updating the original, the developer explained:
We’re immensely proud of what we were able to do with the first Use Your Words, but with such a small budget and an experimental development style, we didn’t quite capture our ultimate vision for what the game could be.
To do that, we can’t just reskin our old code; we’ve got to rebuild it from the ground up! Releasing a sequel rather than DLC will make for a better and deeper player experience and allow us to update the game more often… in other words, it’ll be more fun!
