Why does a cat catch and eat flies. Why is it dangerous for a pet?
Every cat owner at least once noticed how she hunts, catches and eats a fly. This behavior is characteristic of both street and completely domestic animals. It is difficult for four-legged friends to refuse this pleasure, so do not even try to re-educate your pet, it will not work. Why the cat eats flies and what it is fraught with, let's figure it out now.
Why a cat chases a fly
It's very simple. By nature, cats are predators. Hunting is in their blood. Even if your pet is well fed, he will not miss the chance to chase potential prey. Did the cat catch a fly? She will definitely eat it. With such a gesture, she will "mark" the victory and show others her superiority.
Is it possible for cats to eat flies and what are the benefits of this
Eating flies is not dangerous for the health of adult cats. They are already capable of digesting their prey whole. Another thing is kittens. Their digestive and immune systems are not yet formed, babies can get sick. An undigested insect can cause the kitten to vomit and cause stomach discomfort.
Why do cats eat flies? They probably know that flies are a source of protein and chitin. These beneficial substances are necessary for the health and growth of claws, teeth and coat. The process itself, hunting for insects, is an excellent training for a tailed friend. Fly racing will help keep your predator in shape.
Why is the eaten fly dangerous?
As we mentioned above, there is nothing wrong with a cat hunting for flies. However, do not turn a blind eye to such a pet hobby. In a fit of passion, a domestic hunter is completely focused on prey and does not notice the dangers surrounding him. For example, a cat runs after a fly around the apartment, a fly flies out a window or balcony, a pet jumps after it. In this case, your four-legged friend may be seriously injured. To protect your pet from danger, as well as from flies, put mosquito nets or special anti-cat nets on the windows.
In addition, during the hunt, a favorite predator can break or scratch something. Many cat owners know how curtains and flowers on the windowsill suffer.
If a cat does not catch a fly, but, for example, a gadfly, a wasp or a bumblebee? They will sting the pet. Serious edema, vomiting, diarrhea, foam from the mouth are possible. The greatest danger is bites in the palate and larynx, which cause swelling. The pet may suffocate. In this case, you will need the prompt assistance of a veterinarian.
Flies are carriers of internal parasites. Together with an insect, a cat can swallow helminth eggs. You just don't know about it. Dangerous worms parasitize in the body of a four-legged friend for years and do not manifest themselves in any way. There are also no characteristic signs of the presence of helminths. Only with a strong degree of infection, the worms come out along with the feces.
How to protect your pet from insects and parasites
It is unlikely that you will be able to wean a cat from hunting flies. Therefore, if you want to protect your pet from insects, window screens, special adhesive tapes and fumigators will help you.
To avoid worms in your four-legged friend, treat your pet every three months.
For the treatment and prevention of helminth infections, use the new drug Supramil
Supramil will rid your pet of tapeworms, roundworms and microfilariae. The drug affects adults, their eggs and larvae.
Result after the first application
Clinical studies have shown that Supramil rids cats of all types of helminths after a single application.
Gently
Supramil's active ingredient is R-praziquantel. Thanks to him, it was possible to make the medicine safer: the dosage of the active substance was halved.
The drug has the lowest hazard class IV, while all other popular anthelmintic tablets have a hazard class III.
Easy to give to the cat
Supramil tablets are small and have a neutral taste. In addition, they are coated with a meat-flavored casing. Your cat will eat the medicine on its own, without any extra effort.
The most affordable among the leaders
Supramil is the most affordable in comparison with other known helminth preparations.
For different weight categories
The drug is produced separately for kittens and cats up to 2 kilograms, as well as for pets from 2 kilograms. This allows you to choose a drug that is suitable for the weight and age of your pet.
How to use Supramil
Supramil tablets are given to the cat in the mouth once, on the root of the tongue after feeding. Also, the drug can be given in the morning feeding with a small amount of food.

Many owners of purring pets have at least once noticed how a pet catches flies and then eats them. Is it dangerous for the animal, and why cats eat flies, we will tell in the material.
Why cats are interested in flies
Felines, despite being domesticated and provided with food from humans, remain predatory animals. The hunting instinct for these animals remains basic, so cats consider flies a prey that must be caught without fail.
Hunting for an object moving along a complex trajectory, whether it is a string with a bow in the hands of a person or an insect in flight, distracts the cat from all worries and does not let go until the target is caught and eaten. The more actively the fly tries to escape, the more excitement is added for the animal.
An insect consists of protein and chitin, so eating it will not harm the cat, but, on the contrary, will positively affect the condition of the coat and claws. However, while hunting, it is better to protect the pet from such dangers:
- collision with sharp objects, walls and furniture during the chase;
- risk of falling out of an open window not protected by a mosquito net;
- danger of overturning containers with boiling water and landing on a switched on electric or gas stove;
- in the heat of the hunt, a cat is unable to distinguish between a fly and a wasp or bee, whose defensive bites pose a threat to the animal.
