NEW
When we talk in Russian, we don't really think about how to arrange adjectives. This is not taught in school - people just do it intuitively. But in order to learn how to speak English competently, you need to learn a couple of rules. We will talk about them in this material: we will talk about groups of adjectives, their order in English sentences and punctuation marks.

What groups of adjectives are there in English
Adjectives in English are usually divided into two large categories: opinion adjectives and fact adjectives . The first is subjective adjectives. With their help, we can evaluate an object, phenomenon or being and express our opinion about it.
Let's look at an example.
A cute puppy is sitting in the rain. - A cute puppy is sitting in the rain.
The adjective cute is subjective, because through it we evaluate the appearance of the puppy. Even if he seems cute to you, someone else may not think so. Quite the contrary: the puppy is wet and dirty, what can you call him cute ? This is how subjective adjectives work.
To reinforce this, try to explain for yourself why the adjectives in the examples below are also subjective:
-
The movie seemed boring to me, so I left before it was over. - I found the movie boring, so I left before it was over.
-
Then I thought that her smile was the most beautiful in the world. - Then I thought that her smile was the most beautiful in the world.
-
I think your outfit is weird . - I think your outfit is strange.
The second group is objective adjectives. Such qualities are static: they are difficult to fix with a snap of the fingers, and they do not depend on anyone's opinion. These adjectives are divided into subgroups. And yes, it is important to remember them in order to learn how to arrange words in the right order according to the rules of the English language. How to do this, we'll talk later. In the meantime, consider these subgroups and see how they differ.
Depending on the source, from 7 to 10 subgroups of objective adjectives are distinguished. Today we will consider the most complete set. It will be easier to do this in a table.

How to correctly arrange adjectives in a sentence
Now let's figure out what to do if there are many words of this part of speech in a sentence and they all belong to one noun. To determine the order of adjectives when describing an object or person in English, use the rule below.
The first is always an opinion or a subjective assessment. Next - objective adjectives, but also in a special order: size, physical qualities, age, shape, color, pattern, origin, material, type and purpose.
Let's break it all down with a long example below. Of course, they don’t say that, but in it all categories of words are arranged in the correct order.
I brought a nice little soft new shapeless white checkered German silk cloud-like sleeping pillow. - I brought a nice little soft new shapeless white plaid German silk sleep pillow that looks like a cloud.
To make it more convenient for you, we leave below a table with the order of adjectives in English. Take a screenshot and save it: it can be useful as a cheat sheet.
Sentence word order: English adjectives | |
---|---|
Order | Category of adjectives |
1 | Opinion adjectives: opinion and subjective assessment |
2 | Size adjectives: the size of the object, the height of the creature |
3 | Physical quality adjectives: |
4 | Age adjectives: the age of the object or creature |
5 | Shape adjectives: object shape |
6 | Color adjectives: object color |
7 | Pattern adjectives: |
8 | Origin adjectives: |
9 | Material adjectives: the material from which the object is made |
10 | Type adjectives: type, comparison with other objects, creatures, etc. |
11 | Purpose adjectives: purpose, purpose, for which the object was created |
Not all sources agree on what should be called earlier - age or form. Here and below, we will assume that age. But if you meet a different opinion, keep in mind - this is not a mistake.
This table makes it easy to determine the order of any adjectives in an English sentence:
-
There was a beautiful (1) small (2) green (6) pond behind the garden. - Behind the garden there was a beautiful small green pond.
-
I saw a frightening (1) black (6) velvet (9) night outside the window. - I saw a frightening black velvet night outside the window.
-
I remember especially vividly this cloudy (3) northern (8) milk-like (10) sky. — What I remember most vividly was that cloudy, milky northern sky.
And finally, a few more rules:
-
Comparative or superlative adjectives must come before all others.
-
Some words of this part of speech can be included in several groups at once. To determine their place, pay attention to the context.
-
There are some words that are worth highlighting in addition to the general line of adjectives. This is, for example, wide (wide), deep (in depth), long (in length), high (in height) - they take place after the defined nouns and go in conjunction with numerals and units of measurement: The dark narrow corridor was 3 meters long . - The dark narrow corridor was 3 meters long.

When commas and conjunctions are needed between adjectives
Remember the rules of the Russian language: adjectives can be homogeneous and heterogeneous. And sometimes you need to put a comma between them. Roughly the same is true in English.
If the words belong to different subgroups, no comma is needed.
Let's take an example.
It was a creepy rotten old mansion. - It was a creepy, rotten old mansion.
Everything is clear here: creepy reflects opinion, rotten - physical qualities, and old - age. This sentence contains several adjectives from different categories. So, punctuation marks are not needed.
If the words belong to the same subgroup, it is important to put a comma between them.
This works in exactly the same way as in the case of homogeneous members in Russian. Let's look at an example.
The boring layered, untidy outfit aged her. - A boring, layered, unkempt outfit made her look older.
First comes boring is an adjective of opinion. And then more interesting: layered and untidy both refer to physical qualities. It turns out that a comma is needed between them, but after boring - no.
If the words belong to the same subgroup, instead of a comma between them, you can put the union and .
And again everything is like in Russian. Let's look at the previous example again to see how this works.
The boring layered and untidy outfit aged her. - Boring layered and unkempt outfit made her look old.
This sentence has hardly changed - we just added a union instead of a comma. That's also possible.
Check yourself
Now let's practice. Below we have left several sentences, but the words in them are mixed up. Your task is to determine the correct order of adjectives in these sentences according to the rules of the English language. And don't forget to put punctuation marks where they are needed!
You can use the table above to complete the task. Go!
-
The clean modest bright room amazed me.
-
Grandma left me a hat: felt old-fashioned wide-brimmed.
