If you have read folk tales, you have probably noticed that many of them are very similar: foxes in fairy tales are usually cunning, poor peasants are kind and resourceful, and if a king has sons, then there are certainly three of them. But how did it happen? And why are fairy tales similar even from such different countries as Japan, Russia and Italy? We listen to the old records of Firma Melodiya and understand

Researchers began to study fairy tales, their similarities and differences at the beginning of the 20th century. Most often, they divided fairy tales into three sections:

• "tales about animals" - fairy tales-fables, where animals appear;
• "Fairy tales proper" - fairy tales with magic and transformations;
• "fairy tales-jokes" - funny stories, for example, about not too smart young people.

These sections are divided into subsections (for example, inside the "tales about animals" there is a subsection "tales about the cunning fox", inside fairy tales there are "tales about a wonderful helper", and in "tales-jokes" - "tales about clerics" Cleric - servant of the Church.). And each of the subsections, in turn, is divided into fairy-tale types - in the Russian scientific tradition they are usually called fairy-tale plots.

For each fairy tale type, the area of ​​its distribution is indicated, that is, the places where such a plot occurs most often. And it turns out that fairy tales belonging to the same fairy-tale type are found among various peoples. For example, the fairy tales The Scarlet Flower by Aksakov and The Beauty and the Beast by Leprince de Beaumont belong to the same subsection (“tales of a wonderful wife”) and type - you probably noticed their similarities.

And how is it that people begin to compose fairy tales about the same plots? The answer is simple: the fact is that people, regardless of nationality, are similar and think in a similar way. As the Russian philologist Vladimir Propp proved, V. Ya. Propp. "The historical roots of a fairy tale", the roots of a fairy tale are in the rite, and the rites of different peoples are also quite close. For example, all peoples have or had rites of passage: a wedding (the bride and groom become married people), funerals (the transition from our world to another) or initiation (the boy receives the status of a man, and the girl - the status of a woman). Remember, for example, the tale about Ivan Tsarevich - the initiation for him is a conversation with Baba Yaga in a hut on chicken legs.

We have selected and commented on twelve very different tales from very different countries, from Japan to Italy. Some stories will seem familiar to you, and something, most likely, you will hear for the first time.

Rector and Servant. Japanese fairy tale

"Tales about Clerics" is one of the subsections of "Joke Tales". These include any tales about a greedy, stupid or cowardly clergyman and his cunning servant. For example, the Russian reader is well aware of Pushkin's variation on the theme of these tales - "The Tale of the Priest and His Worker Balda". In a Japanese fairy tale, we are talking about the abbot of a Buddhist temple: he makes the servant work, but he does not want to, the abbot hides honey or other delicacies from the servant, but he still finds a way to get to them.

Massaro Pravda. Italian fairy tale

Roles are performed by Alexei Borzunov, Boris Tolmazov, Viktor Zozulin, Vyacheslav Dugin, Inna Alabina. The authors of the staging are Andrey Bazhenov, Tamara Kotlyarova. 1985

Another very popular type of fairy tale is about the faithful servant. This fairy tale is common in Western, Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America. In such tales, we are talking about a servant who is seduced by a beautiful woman: she forces him to kill or give away the sovereign’s beloved horse. The servant is trying to figure out how to hide his misdeed, but not a single lie seems plausible to him, so he tells the sovereign the truth, and he, instead of punishing the servant, rewards him for honesty.

A fairy tale with such a plot is in the collection of literary tales of folklore origin "The History of the Persian Sultana and the Forty Viziers", created by the French writer Francois Petit de la Croix (1653-1713). It is called "The Story of Sadiq, the Court Equestrian" (the author makes a note that this name is translated as "True Teller"). There is a similar story in the French full-length cartoon by Michel Oselo Bedtime Stories.

Brother Ivanushka and Sister Alyonushka. Russian fairy tale

The tale about Alyonushka and Ivanushka belongs to the "brother and sister" type. This story has been known to Russian readers since childhood, but, like many other Russian folk tales, it is found not only in Russia and Eastern Europe, but throughout the world. It may seem that this is a moralizing story designed to explain to children that they need to obey their elders: Ivanushka disobeyed, drank from a goat's hoof and turned into a kid. However, the violation of the ban here is necessary not to teach something, but for the fairy tale itself to take place. Without some kind of misfortune at the beginning (and breaking the ban is one of the most common among such misfortunes), there is no magical end.

"Resourceful Girl". Italian fairy tale

Roles are performed by Valentina Ignatieva, Viktor Koreshkov, Larisa Ivanova, Yuri Nikulin. Staged by Irena Dubrovskaya. 1983

A wise peasant girl who marries a prince or charms a king is a very common story all over the world, and it is found not only in fairy tales, but also in literary stories.

In this Italian fairy tale, a king asks a young girl the difficult task of making a salad called "Oh-Oh". She puts needles in the salad, and the king yells, having pricked himself. In a similar Russian fairy tale, the tsar tells the heroine to weave a towel from one thread, and in response she asks him to make her a loom from one twig (there is a similar story in the Old Russian Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom). Both Italian and Russian, and many other heroines have to appear in the palace "not dressed and not undressed ... not on foot and not on a horse" - the girls fulfill all these seemingly impossible conditions.

"Debaters". Gypsy Tale

Roles are played by Vladimir Vorontsov, Konstantin Kuzhaliev, Lyudmila Davydova, Zoya Pylnova, Irina Sarycheva and others. The authors of the staging are Alexei Gessler, Efim Druts. 1983

This is a Russian gypsy tale, but similar stories are common in the Baltic countries, Scandinavia, India, China, Korea, Latin America and other places. Scholars call this type of tale "gifts of the little people" - they usually have small creatures that help a person in his household chores and adventures. There is a similar story in the Brothers Grimm's fairy tale "Little Men" about how the little men helped the shoemaker sew boots, and he, together with his wife, sewed clothes and little boots for them. Echoes of the plot about inconspicuous helpers can be seen in the story of Eduard Uspensky "Guaranteed little men", and even in the cartoon "Fixies".

The word "dispute" itself comes from the words "arguable, argue." Among Russian gypsies, it meant little fairy-tale men with childish faces, descended from angels. In a house where disputes have started, things are being argued.

"At the command of the pike." Russian fairy tale

"The wise fish helps the loafer" is also a separate and fairly common type of fairy tale. By the will of the magic fish, which the hero spared or saved, all his wishes come true. The hero of a Russian fairy tale - Emelya the Fool - is considered to be a typical character of Russian folklore: this is a man-seat who does not want to work or be responsible for his actions, relying only on a magical saying "at the behest of a pike." However, such a fabulous type is also common in Western Europe, and in Asia, and in Latin America. For example, in the French literary version of this tale - Madame d'Onoy's "Delphine" - the main character is called Alidor. This is an ugly young man of royal origin, according to the plot, he helps a magical dolphin and in return receives the ability to fulfill his desires.

Nevertheless, we can talk about one nationally specific feature of the Russian fairy tale - this is the stove that Emelya rides, so lazy that he does not even want to walk.

"How to get a live monkey." Japanese fairy tale

The roles are performed by artists of the Moscow Drama and Comedy Theater on Taganka. The authors of the staging are Vladimir Glotser, Alexander Vilkin. Before 1972

A fairy tale from the section "tales about animals", and it belongs to a subsection with a very precise name - "the heart of a monkey as a medicine." There are fairy tales with a similar plot in Japan, the Philippines, Korea and many other countries: the sea king or his daughter is sick, and only some organ of an unexpected animal can heal the patient. In the Japanese version, the daughter of a sea dragon falls ill, and the jellyfish goes to fetch the liver of a live monkey. But in general, a monkey in such tales can be replaced by a hare, a jellyfish by a tortoise, and instead of a liver, sometimes they look for a heart. Very often behind this plot there is an explanation why such and such an animal looks like this (and does this). The variants in which the jellyfish appears explain why the jellyfish has no bones, the variants with the turtle explain where land turtles came from, the variants with the monkey explain why the monkeys do not come close to the sea. Based on this fairy tale, many cartoons were shot, for example, the Soviet cartoon "Monkey from Sarugashima Island".

Stone Chowder. Italian fairy tale

Scholars call this type of tale "rewarded hospitality." One day, good Vittoria gave her lunch to a random stranger, and then, when she and her children had nothing to eat, he came to their aid. The motive of hospitality is one of the most ancient and most widespread all over the world. The image of a mother who does not have a soul in her child (this is not only a positive heroine here, but even her evil sister) is also very ancient, at the same time it fully corresponds to the stereotype of an Italian mother, tender and obsessed with children. The moralizing ending of the tale is a late literary adaptation. An appeal to children with an appeal to behave with dignity and not be afraid of a wizard who rewards everyone according to their merits (the good sister Vittoria is rewarded, and the evil sister Anna-Maria is punished) makes us recall the Christian theme (God also rewards everyone according to their merits).

The Frog Princess. Russian fairy tale

This tale combines two folklore plots: "The Heart of the Cannibal (Devil) in the Egg" and "The Extraordinary Wife".

The Beautiful Lady in such tales can be bewitched into a frog, mouse, cat or some other animal, and the main character must disenchant her. The main conflict of the fairy tale revolves around the animal skin: either a prohibition is associated with it (you cannot burn the skin, otherwise trouble will happen to the heroine), or a prescription (in order to disenchant the heroine, the skin, on the contrary, must be burned).

The plot is widespread throughout the world and has a legendary variant in French folklore - the legend of Melusine, the fairy wife of the Comte de Lusignan, who turned into a snake on Saturdays. Once her husband spied on her reincarnation, Melusina flew away and has since appeared over the castle in the form of a woman with one or two snake tails, when one of her descendants is in danger. In The Frog Princess, in addition to the enchanted Vasilisa the Wise and her fiancé Ivan Tsarevich, there are well-known heroes - Kashchei and Baba Yaga, and if Kashchei is a negative character here, Baba Yaga is positive, it is she who advises Ivan Tsarevich how to defeat Kashchei .

Aladdin's Magic Lamp. Arabian tale

Roles are performed by Alexander Lenkov, Alexander Ocheretyansky, Armen Dzhigarkhanyan, Evgeny Vestnik, Elena Romanova, Nina Ter-Osipyan, Rostislav Plyatt and others. The authors of the staging are Vladimir Glotser, Mikhail Salie, Mikhail Libin. 1983

The original of this tale is included in the collection “A Thousand and One Nights. Arabian Tales”, which first appeared in Europe in 1714 in a French translation by Antoine Galland. Researchers believe that this collection is based on Persian and Indian texts that have come down to Gallan in Arabic translation. But there is another hypothesis: some believe that the original fairy tales did not exist, and "A Thousand and One Nights" is not a translation from Arabic, but the work of Gallan himself.

The fairy tale "Aladdin's Magic Lamp" belongs to the subsection "Tales of the Miraculous Object". Its action takes place in Persia. The main opponent of the honest son of the tailor Aladdin is a Maghribian, that is, a native of North Africa. In the Arab countries, Maghrebians were feared and considered sorcerers. Aladdin is helped to fight him by a magic lamp inhabited by a wish-granting genie. This fairy tale is known for numerous adaptations and cartoon versions: the most famous of them is the full-length Disney cartoon Aladdin.

"The Tale of Völund". Scandinavian fairy tale

Roles are played by Anatoly Gorokhov, Vadim Makarovsky, Leonid Zverintsev, Evgeny Perov, Rostislav Dubinsky, Tatyana Osmolovskaya and others. The authors of the staging are Viktor Kuprevich, Anatoly Goryushkin. 1979

"The Tale of Völund" is not quite a fairy tale. Before us is an adaptation of the heroic epic - "The Song of Völund" from the "Elder Edda", a collection of Old Icelandic songs about gods and heroes. Völund was one of the ancient alves (“alvs” is how the word “elves” are pronounced in some Germanic-Scandinavian languages) and was a skilled blacksmith. He was captured by King Nidud, took possession of his sword and gave the ring of his wife to his daughter Bydvild. Völund took extremely cruel revenge on Nidud and his entire family. The processing is quite far from the original text and adapted for children.

"Wonderful boy". Russian fairy tale

Roles are performed by Roman Tkachuk, Tamara Murina, Lilia Sharapova, Alexander Didenko, Boris Kumaritov. Author of the fairy tale Andrey Platonov. Staged by Sergey Vasilevsky. 1982

This tale is the author's, but Andrei Platonov combines several folklore plots in it at once. The princess runs away from her brother, who wants to marry her, and then she gives birth to a "wonderful child": the boy understands the language of birds and animals and knows how to predict fate. The sorcerer wants to eat the child's heart in order to master his skill, but the good cook hides the boy. Despite the folklore origin of the tale, there is also an obvious fiction in it: for example, the fact that the princess teaches her new rustic fiancé to read and write was definitely invented by Platonov himself.
