Hen learns to fly, the wolf dances ballet, Mr. Night takes a day off - the most interesting cartoons from zero to six are recommended by the critic animation and program director of the Big Animation Festival Dina Goder
Good piece cartoons for preschoolers are rare. Perhaps, today author's children's films are shot primarily in Russia, and in other countries, even with a much more developed animation industry, mainly series are shot for kids. But, of course, there are exceptions: this selection includes only those foreign cartoons that can be understood without language.
"Evstifeyka-wolf"
Directed by Oleg Uzhinov. Russia, 2001
Oleg Uzhinov is a well-known director: after "Zhikharka" from "Mountain of Gems" and the first episodes of "Masha and the Bear", where the heroine inherited Zhiharka's fiery temperament, almost everyone knows him. He is also the director of the famous series "Masha Plus Porridge", which not so long ago became one of the world's major hits on the Internet, having collected more than two and a half billion views on YouTube. But Oleg began to shoot children's films from the fairy tale "Evstifeyka the Wolf" based on Yuri Koval - crafty and good-natured.
"Bad Boy"
Directed by Oleg Uzhinov. Russia, 2003
Uzhinov also has a very funny children's film shot at the Pilot studio, where the director began to study animation. Yabednik must watch.
"About a girl who found her bear"
Directed by Elena Chernova. Russia, 2002
Elena Chernova has already made many films, mostly for children, and received many prizes for them (including the main prize of the Suzdal Animation Festival), but her debut based on a poem by Sasha Cherny remains the most favorite for many fans. Chernova remarkably talks about how she found the boy who voiced the heroine: she saw him on the minibus, the boy chatted with his mother without closing his mouth, and his speech was so charming and intonation rich that Chernova immediately offered him to record for the cartoon. Mom agreed, but it turns out that in children's animation there is a concept of sound hygiene, that is, only a small percentage of the text can be illegible, and the kid did not pronounce a single letter normally, so he had to work with a speech therapist. There were also legends about the recording itself, since the boy was fighting and only said the text without hanging upside down. It turned out great.
"Rain from top to bottom"
Directed by Ivan Maksimov. Russia, 2007
Ivan Maksimov is a master of modern Russian animation who became a star in the early 1990s when his student cartoon Bolero won the Berlinale Prize. Strictly speaking, Maximov does not make films for children, but children understand him perfectly, which cannot be said about adults who often ask stupid questions. For children in Maximov's absurd and sentimental world, there is nothing surprising: just think, a flying bunny or a fish with an udder! This applies to all Maximov's films, but "Rain from top to bottom" is one of the most memorable. He himself is like music, you can watch him endlessly.
Dog Playground
Directed by Leonid Shmelkov. Russia, 2009
Leonid Shmelkov is a student of Ivan Maksimov, this is clearly seen in his diploma film at the SHAR studio school: both in characters (anthropomorphic, but still not quite people and not quite dogs), and intonation. But it is also clear that he is different: the relationships between the characters, no matter how incredible they may be, are more important to him than gags.
"Jump-jump"
Directed by Leonid Shmelkov. Russia, 2012
This is also true for another Shmelkov film - absurd and at the same time entirely built on relationships. Shmelkov, like Maksimov, does not make films specifically for children, but children love and understand them.
KJFG No. 5»
Directed by Alexey Alekseev. Hungary, 2008
This two-minute hysterically funny and absurd film by Alexei Alekseev (by the way, a distant descendant of Stanislavsky) was shot literally on his knee about ten years ago. When asked what the film would be called (it was necessary to send it to festivals), he tapped something on the keyboard without looking. It turned out to be such an unpronounceable name. But as soon as this cartoon, which Alexey calls "punk", was released, its success turned out to be incredible. Fan-made remakes were made for it, teenagers uploaded videos in the roles of forest musicians, and in Annecy, where the film won an unexpected prize for the best music (Alekseev, as a real Renaissance personality, he composed and played it himself), animation youth went around the city and howled like a wolf from a movie. By the way, not so long ago in Annecy they made a big cycle of programs in which the audience had to choose the funniest movie in the 50 years of the festival, and Alekseev's two-minute forest jam session beat everyone. And immediately after the appearance of this film, the Nickelodeon channel ordered the director a mini-series with the same characters. So there were 12 more episodes called "Log Jam".
Pereletnaya
Directed by Vera Myakisheva. Russia, 2012
A very good graduation film by Vera Myakisheva is a slightly sad family story “Waiting”, where at first a baby elephant waits for her mother from work all day long, and then she, having already become a grandmother, waits for him with her grandson. But for the little ones, first of all, I want to show Vera's other two very nice films. For example, about a chicken who dreamed of learning to fly like other birds (by the way, the script for it was written by a wonderful director and screenwriter Yulia Aronova).
"How cats live"
Directed by Vera Myakisheva. Russia, 2015
And a movie for very young children about three cats — a sailor, a cook and a reader, who experience all four seasons in their house. The film was shot based on pictures by Daria Bulycheva, and the music for it was written by Pyotr Nalich, with whom Vera has been collaborating since her diploma.
The Short Story of a Fox and a Mouse
Directed by Camille Che, Hugo Jean, Juliette Jourdan, Marie Pillier, Kevin Roget. France, 2015
Another fairy tale about a fox and a mouse, but not according to Bianchi, was filmed by five graduates of the French film school ESMA using 3D computer animation. The film received many awards.
Trim Time
Directed by Gil Alkabets. Germany, 2002
The famous Israeli-German director Gil Alkabetz remains a paradoxicalist, even when he makes films for children. Four seasons turn into a whirlwind of hairdressing for a tree: the hairdresser helped the hair-leaves grow, he also dried them out with a hair dryer, so that they fell off. This story was filmed by Alkabets for the most famous German studio Film Bilder, where several cute films for the little ones have been released in recent years.
Octopus
Directed by Julia Okker. Germany, 2015
At the same German studio Film Bilder, young director Julia Okker made a series of small films with stories about animals - "Animanimals". For example, about an octopus who wanted to bake a peach pie, but one of his obstinate and cunning legs dreamed of chocolate.
"Crocodile"
Directed by Julia Okker. Germany, 2015
About a crocodile with very short arms who wanted to watch TV comfortably in the evening, but that was not the case.
Wolf
Directed by Julia Okker. Germany, 2015
And, it seems, the most unexpected film in the cycle is about a wolf who dreamed of becoming a ballerina and secretly danced "Swan Lake" in a pink skirt in the forest.
"Super Grand"
Directed by Marjolin Perretin. Switzerland, 2014
Marjolin is a young and very promising Swiss director with a great sense of humor and precision in his observations. Her film, a one and a half minute story about a giant baby that everyone is afraid of, has traveled to many international festivals.
"Mr. Night has a Day Off"
Directed by Ignas Meilūnas. Lithuania, 2016
This is a witty movie about Mr. Night, who changes the color of all objects to black, by the Lithuanian director Ignas Meilunas filmed in Vilnius, on the street and at home, fitting the picture into the real environment. As he himself says, he shot it in twenty-one summer days with zero budget commissioned by the French festival Nuits en Or 2016.
"Tin Toy"
Directed by John Lasseter. USA, 1988
The animation heavyweight American studio Pixar, the main authority in 3D computer animation, has many suitable cartoons. 1988's Tin Toy is one of the few short films directed by the great Pixar founder John Lasseter. Programs were tested on this film to help make the image of a person more realistic, and although to today's eyes the computer design of 30 years ago looks very primitive, the story is about the unfortunate tin Tinny, a man-orchestra who first tries to take his legs off a baby that destroys everything, and then - to win his attention, still looks great. By the way, this film was the first to win an Oscar for computer animation.
"Partly Cloudy"
Directed by Peter Son. USA, 2009
Pixar usually works on new technologies in short films, which are then used in full-length films. Apparently, in "Partly Cloudy" - a film about an unfortunate cloud sculpting very dangerous babies for a stork - the studio specialists were thinking about how to show the soft, cottony texture of the clouds.
Piper
Directed by Alan Barillaro. USA, 2016
And in this Pixar film about a chick learning not to be afraid of water, Alan Barillaro worked first and foremost on how to show the sea and, most importantly, the feathers of the little fluffy sandpiper. The film won an Oscar in 2017 for best short film.
For the Birds
Directed by Ralph Eggleston. United States, 2000
One of Pixar's greatest kids-friendly films is About the Birds, which won an Oscar in 2001. It is not so much the gags that are important here, but the story about the relationship of a flock of small harmful birds with one large and good-natured one. And the moral is understandable to any five-year-old: it’s better to be kind than evil, right?
The Bird Alphabet (Het vogeltjes ABC)
Directed by Dick Grobler. South Africa, 2008
The cutest animated alphabet by South African illustrator Pete Grobler and director Dick Grobler, of course, does not play with Cyrillic, but it does not matter. The cartoon is understandable to anyone, because the birds show us letters not through the words that begin with them, but through cheerful onomatopoeia. The chicks are crying: “Ek! Ek!", the bird farts: "F-f-f-f-tt!", the apple fell: "Doink!"
The Bear & The Hare
Directed by Elliot Dear, Yves Gelain. Great Britain, 2013
The bear, who has never seen Christmas (because he always slept at this time), is given a holiday by his friend the hare. This impossibly sweet cartoon is actually made as an advertisement for the old English chain stores John Lewis with the slogan "Give someone a Christmas they'll never forget". The main charm of the film is in the unusual way of its creation: two of the most classic animation techniques were chosen for it - hand-drawn and puppetry. The whole world - the forest, the trees, the lair - is made by hand, three-dimensional, as it is done in a puppet movie. And all the characters are drawn (and traditional Disney artists were invited for this), and then each phase of their movement was cut out by a laser - in this way, flat drawn figures lived in a three-dimensional forest. There is a separate film about how "The Bear and the Hare" was created - the real magic of animation, which is understandable even to a five-six-year-old child.

The series "Kids" are simple stories based on situations already familiar to the baby; rhythmic, but comfortable for the perception of a small child narration, interactive elements, and most importantly - charming and very touching images of characters, so similar to animated toys.
The world of Malyshariki is a world of children's play. Its very height, when the game is indistinguishable from reality. Malyshariki is a children's fantasy, toys come to life, whose life takes place in an apartment where a family with children lives.
