Barney winked at Pete, stuck his head out the door and yelled at the top of his voice:

“Yes,” Pete called from behind him, “kiss his ass.”
"He's climbing a tree," Barney said. And behind him is a fireman. Get ready!
A moment later, paint, tar and feathers flew down. In surprise, Dave Watkins unclenched his hands, let go of the barrel and collapsed to the ground. At the same time, he dragged a fireman who climbed up behind him.
Pete clapped his hands happily. Another pillow ripped open with a crack, and more feathers swirled in the air.
“Okay, guys, have fun, and that’s enough,” the fireman shouted. “Now get down from the tree like good boys.”
"Try to get me," Pete replied.
"Yeah, try it," Barney echoed.
An hour later Pete and Barney were on the ground with Violeta Sims fussing around them, who seemed to care more about the boys than her own husband, who broke both legs in a fall from a tree.
She looked into Pete's eyes.

She kissed the boy loudly on the cheek, and the fireman took him away. There were tears in Pete's eyes.

Chapter 2
Pete Sorenson made his first serious attempt to reach Barney when he was ten years old. He did not look for him for four years, not because he did not remember his blood brother; no, he thought about him all the time and always mentioned him in his evening prayers. It was just that almost everything was forbidden to him, except for studies and housework. Pete had a hard time in a house full of other pupils older, bigger and stronger than him. He very rarely went to bed full, even more rarely without a bump, bruise or abrasion. His adoptive parents, Bernie and Blossom Nelson, claimed he was incorrigible. All the children knew that the Nelsons did not really understand the meaning of this word. They also knew that these people first of all needed the money that the state allocated for the maintenance of foster children. A certain amount was set aside for a week's meals, and the rest was spent on beer, wine and brandy.
If the groceries ran out before the next check arrived, the kids ate peanut butter bread. Oil was bought in hefty four-kilogram cans, and it was always very difficult to scrape it off the bottom. Sometimes the bread was covered with mold, which had to be cut off.
Pete hated other adopted children as much as he did the Nelsons. At times he hated himself. He wrote long letters to Barney, full of longing and desire to have a loved one nearby, but he never sent them, because he did not know the address. Instead, he hid them behind the cover of a geography textbook.
Pete Sorenson dreamed a lot. Dreamed about how they would meet with Barney. Later he dreamed of a faceless, nameless uncle and how he would come for him. When he got tired of these useless dreams, he began to think about other things. Like how he would have killed Bernie and Blossom the Nelsons.
He couldn't even stand their smell. They smelled like they never changed their underwear. In addition, the couple sweated terribly and made a whole cacophony of vile sounds when they sat down to dinner.
Bernie was noisily sucking in coffee and beer, and Blossom was missing two front teeth, and she whistled every now and then. He hated everything about this house and was looking forward to the day when Barney would come for him.
Pete sat in his room, which he shared with three girls, licking his wounds after the last battle. Frankly, he felt like a winner. Today one of the older boys, Dick Stevenson, tried to take his surfboard away from him. Pete fought like a tiger, and after the fight, he told Bernie Nelson that he would complain about the mistreatment to the education department.
"They'll put you in jail," he shouted at the nasty fat man.
