An interesting fairy tale is that part of childhood that stays with us forever, even when childhood is gone. This is a magical world that is wide open in front of the baby, and acquaintance with it begins with a short and sweet bedtime story.

At what age to read fairy tales to a child

There is no strict age limit in reading fairy tales to a child. Reading for a child is primarily an opportunity for emotional intimacy with an adult. Even if not a word is clear yet, the familiar timbre of the voice, the measured rhythm soothe the baby and stimulate its development. That is why psychologists recommend reading fairy tales even to babies. The main condition: the process should bring pleasure to both the adult and the baby.

Benefits of reading fairy tales

A bedtime story read by a parent is a powerful stimulus for the child's development, a child's wide opportunities in the following areas:

  • imagination;
  • fantasy;
  • creative thinking;
  • speech skills;
  • emotional development;
  • the ability to find a way out of problem situations.

Unlike cartoons, a fairy tale does not present the child with ready-made images and the world invented by the artist, but invites him to think, think out and imagine what is not in the illustrations.

Simply put, we read to children at night and at the same time unleash their creativity. The next step is the first children's tests of themselves as an author and artist, but that will come later. And now such familiar and at the same time amazing short bedtime stories come to the aid of parents.

Bedtime stories - what should they be?

It often happens that every day a baby asks for the hundredth time to read a familiar fairy tale to him, not wanting to listen to any others.

Do not argue and try to read something new - a bedtime story exists for this, to cradle and give pleasant dreams. So, it should be:

  • short;
  • calm;
  • kind;
  • without dynamic details in the plot, but with a happy ending.

The repeated repetition of the same situation (a familiar room, a favorite blanket and a soft toy, next to it is a mother reading a familiar fairy tale) turns into a kind of ritual for the baby, which has a calming effect. It helps relieve the emotional stress that has accumulated over a long day.

Secrets of reading bedtime stories

In order to replace the evening fairy tale with a sweet dream, it should be a short fairy tale, which should be read online in a calm and familiar environment.

Read in a low voice, without haste. Remember, we read to children at night not to give them new knowledge - there is daytime for this. In the evening, it is important to create a relaxing atmosphere and a sense of peace. For this, it is important to choose the right bedtime story, which is why our site is always open for you, dear parents!

Bedtime story - Reading a story to a child before bed

Few people think that reading a bedtime story to a child is not just a traditional and pleasant, but also a very useful ritual. Most recently, in a large-scale study, scientists found that children to whom parents read books, some parts of the brain work differently than those in whose families it was not customary to read with the baby. We are talking about the difference in the work of that part of the brain that is responsible for the connection of sounds and visual images.

The fact is that when a baby listens to a fairy tale and at the same time looks at a picture in a book, sitting in his mother's arms, he learns to think out those actions that are described in the book, but are not visible in the picture. "Grandma baked a bun." Here is a grandmother in the picture, here is a gingerbread man, and here is a stove - and the work began to boil. Neural connections began to build in the brain that help the baby “see” what happened in history. Not at all the same effect is obtained from watching a cartoon, where the whole process is shown to the child in finished form.

Researchers say that children whose parents read picture books before bed turn out to be more interested and receptive readers in the future. The ability to imagine all the events described in the book develops in them so well that, becoming schoolchildren, they learn everything they read faster, and with great pleasure move on to books without pictures.

It is known that children need to hear human speech in order to develop their own speech skills. But not in every family, the baby hears such a rich set of words and phrases addressed to him. The researchers analyzed a whole list of popular picture books, and it turned out that even books for the youngest, which contain very little text, significantly enrich the child's vocabulary. They contain more "unique" words than a baby in an average family hears throughout the first years of life.

Thus, children who listen to books from infancy begin to pronounce and understand words faster and have a wider vocabulary than their peers who have not been read books. In addition, their brains are better able to represent what they read, and therefore they become more thoughtful and attentive readers. And, as a result, they do better in their studies in the future.

Why is it so important to read just before bed? It is this time that the kids should associate with the time of comfort, safety and coziness. And an important component of this feeling is the mother's voice. All children like to listen to their mother when she sings or speaks only for him alone. He absorbs her phrases and intonations, adopts the manner of speaking, and through his voice feels the attitude of his mother and her love. And the connection only intensifies if at this moment the child is sitting on his mother's lap or holding her hand. Such moments contribute to the formation of truly close and trusting relationships. And in the future, it will be easier for you to move from reading a fairy tale before bed to discussing topics and thoughts that are important for a growing child.

If the baby still does not like to look at the book in his mother's hands, tries to take it away, crumple the pages, gets upset and pushes the book away, then gradually accustom the baby to “reading”. Read to him when he is awake and in a good mood. Interest him by naming the characters shown in the pictures. Pay special attention to already familiar animals and objects so that the baby is delighted to recognize them. And introduce the book into the evening rituals unobtrusively, without immediately suggesting a long story.

By the way, be prepared for the fact that at a certain age (usually from one to two years old) the baby may insist on reading the same book for many evenings. Children love familiar things, they love predictability, it calms them down and helps them fall asleep peacefully. As a rule, simple verses are well perceived at this age.
