A kitten's tragically short life is breaking hearts online after it was born with bulging eyes and no nose.

The kitten's owner took to TikTok, where they gained over 14 million views as people watched the young feline's first moments.

"My cat just gave birth to an abnormal kitten and I don't know what to do," the owner wrote on-screen, showing herself with her hand covering her mouth.

In the clip, the tiny kitten can be seen with bulging red eyes and no nose. Its mother sits in a cardboard box, awaiting their reunion. The owner places the "abnormal" kitten back with its mother, who appears to love it regardless and goes to lick it.

There was clearly a serious issue with the kitten because cats are usually born with their eyes closed. They keep them closed for days after to protect their eyes as they develop.

"Because newborn kittens are also hypersensitive to light, it's imperative that their eyes remain shielded until they are ready," reports Catster Magazine.

In a heartbreaking turn of events and despite an influx of online support, the kitten passed away after less than a day. The owner confirmed the news in a second video to their account, writing: "My angel didn't last a day. My angel didn't make it."

The owner has not yet confirmed any diagnosis for the kitten, but many were left pointing out that it may have been born with hydrocephalus, which PetMD describes as "the abnormal dilation, or expansion, of the ventricular system due to an increased volume of spinal fluid."

The condition often causes an abnormally-large dome-shaped head and eye abnormalities.

The kitten's short life has left viewers heartbroken, while some even claimed to be left in tears at the video.

"This isn't the update I expected. I'm literally heartbroken," one wrote.

"You got to meet a rare unique soul and that's still very special. Their short life they knew were loved," added another.

"My heart shattered into a million pieces," noted one user.

In March, a cat born with three eyes similarly melted hearts online after its owner shared images to Reddit, as reported by Newsweek. Unfortunately the kitten also only lived for a short time, needing to be euthanized just days later.

"Along with its deformed eye it had a cleft palate, there was nothing I could do to help it," the owner shared in an update online.

All cases of eye protrusion will involve your cat’s eye extending beyond the normal opening of the socket in an abnormal position. Other symptoms of eye protrusion may include:

  • Bulging of eyes
  • Abnormal pupil size (either smaller or larger in appearance)
  • Enlarged appearance of one eye over the other
  • Severely red eyes
  • Drying of eyes
  • Ulceration of eyes due to lack of proper moisture process
  • Rupture of eye

Causes of Eye Protrusion in Cats

Eye protrusion in your cat occurs when the eye extends past the bony structures of the eye socket and escapes its normal positioning. When this occurs, the eye sits in front of the eyelid and other protective eye features. This causes drying, ulceration, hemorrhaging and potential long-term damage to the eye of your cat. Causes of this condition may include:

  • Traumatic injury to eye or face
  • Shaking by the neck
  • Infection of eye
  • Rarely, certain eye tumors

Diagnosis of Eye Protrusion in Cats

While the observation of eye protrusion in your cat will be immediate to an experienced veterinarian, determining the underlying cause will be important to the treatment, as well as preventing future incidents. Diagnosis of the eye protrusion will begin with a thorough physical exam of your cat. Since traumatic injury is often the cause of this condition, your vet will also inspect your cat closely for any additional damage to limbs or bones. For this same reason, your vet may order x-ray images of your cat. This is especially true when the cause of the protrusion is unknown or the owner is unable to provide a history of the symptoms. 

It will be important to the diagnostic process for you to provide your veterinarian with a complete physical and medical history of your cat. You should let your veterinarian know if your cat has been involved in an accident or suffered some other form of trauma or has access to outdoors where they could have suffered an injury without your knowledge. If your cat has been acting lethargic, ignoring food, or has other behavioral changes this may be a symptom of infection.

Finally, your vet will want to closely examine the eye for any damage to the surface or underlying tissues. This may involve the use of specialized ophthalmoscopes, sometimes in connection with fluorescein eye drops that highlight any trauma or ulceration to the surface of the eye.

Treatment of Eye Protrusion in Cats

Treatment of eye protrusion in your cat will focus initially on replacing the eye into the correct location if it has become entirely dislocated from the socket. This will be done in your veterinarian’s office in a surgical procedure in which your cat will have to undergo anesthesia. Sedation is necessary in order to determine your cat is as still as possible given the delicate nature of the procedure. 

Once the eye is replaced into the socket, your vet will often administer drops or antibiotic ointment to prevent any infection. Your veterinarian will place several stitches in your cat’s eyelids. This will keep the eye shut temporarily and allow the injury to properly heal. Closing the eye temporarily also assists in keeping the eye in its proper location and prevents it from escaping the socket again during the healing process. Your cat will need to follow up with the vet several days to weeks later to have the stitches removed and allow the eye to reopen.

Recovery of Eye Protrusion in Cats

The prognosis for recovery for cats suffering from eye protrusion will depend on the underlying cause and whether there was any trauma to the nerves of the eye or surrounding tissues. In some cases, the eye will have permanent damage and eyesight will be limited. If the eye becomes non-functioning and there is damage to the tissues that produce tears, your vet may recommend removal of the eye in order to avoid infection from lack of lubrication of the eye, long term.

In general, cats will learn to adapt to limited vision. Cats with vision issues should be limited to the indoors only, as they are at risk for injury due to the inability to see oncoming vehicles or other objects. With proper care and management, your cat will have the same lifespan and quality of life as unaffected pets.

The Lomakin family from Barnaul rescued and adopted a kitten a year ago. For the owners, Fix is ​​the most ordinary cat, but many, seeing two huge eyes looking at you, involuntarily break into a smile. The unusual pet is very much loved by TikTok users and has acquired almost 60 thousand fans.

- A year ago we were going to go buy a sphinx, but fate decreed otherwise - we found Fix in the village of Yuzhny. There were a lot of injuries, solid hematomas, it was just a small, emaciated "piece of meat." The eyes were cloudy and small. It's scary to look at, - Irina, the owner of the cat, told Komsomolskaya Pravda.

Thanks to care and love, over time, the baby got stronger and turned into a big handsome man. The look of the cat also changed noticeably - instead of slightly ajar eyes, huge rounded eyes appeared, like large grapes.

- The veterinarian said that this could be the result of an injury: maybe the pregnant cat was kicked when he was in the womb. Nobody can say for sure. This deviation is a fact, but it does not affect the health or life of a cat, - added a resident of Barnaul.

Friends of the family fell in love with the pet for its unusual appearance and offered to film it and upload it to the popular TikTok app. So Irina did - the first video with Fix collected almost three million views.

- I downloaded it in the evening and went to bed. I wake up and my instagram is flooded with messages. It turned out that some humorous group published my video, and the well-known blogger Zhidkovsky reposted it. This is how the advertisement turned out, - Irina explained.

In just a couple of months, the cat has its own "army" of followers - more than 60 thousand subscribers. The hosts are constantly thinking of how else to surprise the audience, what plot to come up with, but the actor manages without a script, delighting his audience with a unique charm.
