1. Circle Round by Anne Sibley O’Brien

Simple, counting text describes a diverse group of children who come together at the playground. The illustrations will give your class lots to talk about and can help open a brainstorming session about inclusive ways to welcome others to play.  (Release date: October 26, 2021)

Doug likes a lot of things, including his rock collection, harmonica bands, and his many friends—but he thinks hugs are just way “too squashy.” When you need children’s books about friendship about respecting personal boundaries and different ways to show you care about a friend, definitely reach for this one!

Sam resists Agu’s attempts to join his game of pirates at first because he’s unfamiliar, but Agu wins him over with his real-life experience sailing the high seas. Gorgeous and thought-provoking, this book will help kids talk about how new friends can lead to new learning and new fun.

If you or your students speak Spanish, you’ll definitely want to add this unique children’s book about friendship across language barriers to your shelves. (And if you don’t, it’s still a great one to enjoy with kids, using the glossary to help.) Using a mix of English, Spanish, gestures, and open-mindedness, two groups of friends find common ground—and laughs—at the park.

Isabella is so excited for her first day of school, her “make-new-friends day,” after moving to the United States from Colombia—and then a snowstorm cancels school! A chance encounter shows her there are lots of ways to make new friends and have fun playing together. This touching personal narrative is one of our favorite new children’s books about friendship.

Jitterbug the chipmunk is hesitant about accepting a newcomer to her woods—until her friends help her see the positives of welcoming “someone new.” Sign of a great book: students of any age could appreciate this story and connect its themes to their lives.

7. In a Jar by Deborah Marcero

Llewellyn and his friend Evelyn collect their favorite memories in jars. When Evelyn moves away, it’s devastating—until they find a way to use their special memories to stay connected. We love this hushed, beautiful children’s book about friendship for the range of ideas and conversations it inspires.

We just keep coming back to this gorgeous book for all the literacy mini-lessons. Daniela and Evelyn are the best of friends, but Evelyn’s impending move is hard to swallow. Their poignant conversations show how friendship can transcend circumstance—and can help real-life friends facing a similar situation.

So many early chapter books have fantastic characterizations of friendship to discuss with kids (Frog and Toad, Mr. Putter and Tabby, Narwhal and Jelly … we could go on and on). Frank and Bean are as different as could be, but over time that changes from a headache to a mutual win. (For more friendship-themed books for early readers, check out those described in 18 Standout Graphic Novels for Kids in Elementary School.)

Approaching friendship discussions through stories works for lots of kids, but for some, a more explicit primer can be helpful. This is one of the most comprehensive nonfiction children’s books about friendship we’ve seen. It uses straightforward language and plenty of charming pictures to teach key skills like how to use friendly body language, how to initiate conversations with friends, and strategies to use when friends argue.

Meesha never feels like she gets it quite right, unless she’s making “friends” with craft supplies. When Josh quietly reaches out, though, she learns that doing something she loves alongside a friend can feel twice as nice. Share this story to honor the experiences of kids who find it challenging to connect with others.

12. The Hike by Alison Farrell

Three friends go on an epic outdoor adventure. Each one brings different strengths to the hike that help make it a success for all.

Making amends when you’ve made a mistake is a key part of friendship. This book manages to be both fun and serious as it teaches readers exactly what the title promises.

An exuberant, child’s-eye celebration of a friendship that’s just meant to be. This one is moving for both children and adults!

Sicily is a STEM wizard, constantly making creations from parts she finds in her apartment complex. Making friends, though? That’s harder. Throughout Sicily’s attempts, a parallel story of a neighbor boy unfolds in the illustrations—a fun example of how friendship can occur in unexpected places, and a reminder for kids that a big part of friendship is considering others’ experiences.

Friendship is often lots of fun, but sometimes, being a friend means helping during hard times. When Elephant feels down, Mouse instinctively knows he needs time to let the feelings pass, with a quiet friend resting by his side.

three touching stories for children about friendship and wisdom

Author: Anna Fedulova

Photo: Lena Kaplekovsk

Love and Hate, freedom and responsibility, betrayal and friendship, searching for yourself and the adoption of others talking about these difficult topics with a child is much easier with the support of books.

It is best to start communication when there is a natural request from the child. For example, he was stumped by some life situation: the first difficult choice, resentment and quarrels with friends, an offense that haunts. The kid, with his characteristic directness, can ask a question directly. This is at best. But, most likely, parents will have to turn on sensitivity to the fullest in order to recognize the anxieties and experiences of the child and bring him to the conversation themselves.

Books will certainly play the most important supporting role here. First, they can serve as an occasion for conversation. A book that fits the story will help your child open up to you. Secondly, try right here and now to explain with your fingers what independence or repentance is. Examples will be needed. Surely you will find a couple, only they will turn out to be from your adult life, and an attempt to translate them into a fairy tale format will put you in a dead end. Finding suitable stories in books that will both captivate a child and help find answers to exciting questions is easier than making up such stories on the go. But remember that the text is not just about reading. It is equally important to discuss what you hear with the children. Questions can be anything. The main thing to remember is that the book is only a good helper, everything else depends on you.

Luis Sepulveda is one of the most popular and widely read Latin American writers in the world. His books for adults and children have been translated into over forty languages and sold in the millions. Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Literature, he was awarded numerous prizes from different countries, performances are staged and films are made based on his works.

Sepulveda has an unusual and difficult life path, which of course is reflected in his books. They are filled with wisdom, courage and even rebelliousness - and this will be noticed by both large and small readers. His stories are parables about heroes with a difficult fate. Dressed in the form of children's books, they will be no less interesting to an adult thoughtful reader. These tales are a real treasure of wisdom.

Touching stories about friendship and wisdom were first published in Russia in March of this year. Written for young readers, they are primarily the legacy of the author, which he created for his grandchildren.

The story of a very slow snail, or the importance of being yourself

In one meadow - the same as near your house or mine - lived a colony of snails. They were absolutely certain that they lived in the best place on earth. None of them had ever reached the edge of the meadow, and even more so to the asphalt, which began where the last rare blades of grass grew. And because they had never travelled, they had nothing to compare their lives to. They did not know that for squirrels, the most comfortable home in the world was the tops of beeches, and for bees, wooden hives that stood in a row at the other end of the meadow. They couldn't compare themselves with others, and they didn't want to... And only one very unusual snail: more than anything, she wanted to know why she was so slow and is it good to be like that? And only when a terrible danger hung over the meadow and the little snail had to save its inhabitants, animals and insects, she finally realized how important it is to be yourself and be proud of who you are.

From the author:

“A few years ago, my grandson Daniel was sitting in the garden of our house, carefully watching a snail. Suddenly he looked at me and asked a question that seemed very difficult to me: “Why is the snail so slow?” I said that I did not yet have an answer, and promised that someday I would find it - I do not know when, but I will find it. Since the ability to keep one's word is one of my great virtues, in this story I try to answer his question. And, of course, I dedicate it to my grandchildren Daniel and Gabriel, my granddaughters Camila, Aurora and Valentina and all the slow snails in our garden.

"Max, Meeks and Mex, or the Story of an Unusual Friendship"

The boy Max and the kitten Meeks are best friends. They grew up together and never parted: when Max was at school, the kitten was waiting for him at home. When Meeks walked on the city rooftops, the boy filled his bowl with various goodies. But, unfortunately, time moves faster for cats than for people. As soon as Max grew up, Mix was already old and almost blind. But one day the cat met Mex, a small and very timid mouse. And who would have thought that it was Mex who would help the blind cat “gain his sight” again and even walk on the roof!

Author:

“I've always liked cats. I love animals in general, but I have a special relationship with cats. I like cats because they are mysterious, independent and behave with dignity. When I met little Mix, a cat that my son Max adopted from the Society for the Protection of Animals in Munich, I was struck by the dignity with which this tiny kitten, no bigger than my palm, behaved. Mix grew, and my amazement grew with him: his muzzle was not at all like the muzzles of other cats. He showed a thin Greek profile that attracted everyone's attention. As you will learn from this story, Mix had a strange fate that any other cat would have brought a lot of grief, but Mix was always in a good mood, which was evident from his contented rumbling. And even withdrawing into himself, as is characteristic of cats, he looked both mysterious and happy. I often asked him: “What are you thinking, Mix?” Of course, he did not answer, and I wrote this story to be the answer to my question, in order to still hear the voice of the cat Meeks.

"The story of a dog named Faithful" Evil people keep him on a chain and chase him on the trail. The faithful do not know sleep and rest, love and affection. But it was not always so. Once he had a warm home and a beloved owner, a boy named Aukaman. One day, strangers drove the Aukaman family from their native land and separated him from the Faithful. Now the dog wants more than anything to find an old friend. And he does not even suspect that fate is already leading him towards him ... When he was a tiny puppy, a big and strong jaguar saved him from a cold death and brought him to people. So Faithful found a cozy home and the best owner in the world, which was a boy named Aukaman. But one day strangers came to their land and separated their best friends. Many years later, a dog named Faithful is forced to obey the enemies. But he still believes that one day he will find his beloved Aukaman, because for the sake of a friend he is ready for any feat!

From the author:

“In distant Chile, in the south, in that part of it called Araucania, or Valmapu, I had a great-uncle, Ignacio Calfucura, from the Mapuche people (this name consists of two words: “mapu "- the land and "che" - the people, and is translated as "the people of the earth"). At sunset, he told stories to Mapuche children in their language, Mapudungun. I did not understand that the rest of the Indians spoke their own language, but I understood grandfather's stories.
