These toddler counting activities are a great way to teach toddlers to count and recognize numbers using counting games and play based activities.

Counting and number recognition are skills that toddlers will learn through games, activities and play. The more you talk about numbers and point them out in real life, the more inquisitive they will be.

Just like exposure to reading and books is so important, the same applies to numbers. We like to play 'number detectives' and look for numbers when we are out and about. Try to count whenever you get the chance (walking up steps, counting crackers for lunch, counting how many shoes etc).

The key to counting is learning one to one correspondence (pointing to each item and allocating it a number). These counting activities for toddlers are a great introduction, and I'm sure they'll have lots of fun with them! You may like to try these activities in conjunction with our ABC Activities for Toddlers.

The Best Counting Activities For Preschoolers

Learning to count with your toddler, preschooler or kindergartener need not be boring or filled with worksheets! Check out these easy and fun counting activities that incorporate hands-on learning!

Counting with Preschoolers

My kids love numbers! But I have to admit teaching twins their numbers can be challenging especially when they don’t learn the same way or have the same interests. But that is why I love what I do. I enjoy the challenge of finding ways to engage two four-year olds and encourage both to learn. These hands-on counting activities are a few of the ways that we practiced counting over the last few years.

Supplies For Counting Activities

For many of these activities we used items found around the house, craft room and playroom or in our backyard. Items such as stuffed animals, Pom Poms, leaves, toy animals and more are great for teaching preschoolers and toddlers to count.

TV Show:

Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to finally share my new crafting TV show Curious Crafting on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube!

This show is all about fun and easy crafts for toddlers and preschoolers.

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

Play is at the core of learning during the early years and it can take many forms. One of the most important of these is sensory play because it engages all of a child’s senses (taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing) and has a enoumous positive impact on brain development.

Our Sensory Play Kits are some fun and easy ways to keep your child engaged while at the same time using sensory play to nurture their mind!

Natural material craft

Do you want to teach your kid how to make crafts from natural materials? It's not difficult at all, you just need to collect cones, leaves, twigs, blades of grass, acorns, and then show how to connect the leaves to each other with blades of grass, stalks, thin twigs. With spruce and pine cones, acorns, pebbles, shells painted in different colors, the child can play at any time of the year. In the summer, for example, in the sandbox or on the beach, in the winter at the table. Where can I get material for such crafts? Of course, in nature, for example, to collect various leaves, blades of grass, flowers with it. This must be done together, otherwise, taking some poisonous plant, he can cause great harm to himself. What crafts can be made from natural materials? Yes, any. nine0003

Leaf appliqué

Draw the contours of a steamboat, a fish, a dragonfly, a butterfly, or some other pattern on paper, and the child himself will be able to lay out these figures from natural material. You can fix the leaves or shells with glue or plasticine.

Nature Lotto

You can offer him to cut rectangular cards from white or tinted paper and carefully stick your finds to them. Over time, a kind of loto will be made out of such cards. Playing it, the child will remember well from which tree or shrub this or that leaf was taken. nine0003

Plate with forest gifts

A circle is cut out of cardboard or thick soft paper, and a child can stick birch, mountain ash, maple, oak, aspen leaves on it - an interesting plate will turn out. Let the child try to make such a plate for his corner or as a gift to someone close.

Birds and butterflies made of leaves

It is still difficult for a child to cut out birds or butterflies. Adults can do this, and he will color them, glue antennae to butterflies - strips of paper. Wings for flying crafts can be made from leaves. Invite the child to think about the leaves of which trees are suitable for a dragonfly, butterfly or bird. nine0003

Account allowance

Natural material is also a good counting aid for the baby. The child can learn to count chestnuts, acorns or cones. Make several small pouches. On each, you can draw or embroider a number. Ask the child to put as many chestnuts into the bag as the number indicates.

Necklace or wreath of leaves

The simplest task and the most favorite pastime for girls is weaving wreaths or beads. Why not make a gorgeous necklace or a chic autumn leaf wreath. Maple leaves are especially good. nine0003

Give a child a thin string and ask them to string leaves on it.
