Description

"Fairytale Pictures" for viola and piano (1851) is a cycle of four different pieces created in the last period of Robert Schumann (1810–1856). When choosing a name for this opus, the author relied on the “repertoire” of names popular with romantics, which included the definition of “fabulous”. German composers and writers of the era of romanticism seemed to rediscover the beauty of a folk tale that inhabits the world with mysterious fantastic creatures, and also poeticized images of the knightly Middle Ages and patriarchal antiquity. Schumann understood "fabulousness", first of all, as a synonym for imagination, fantasy and something unusual. This word for him also meant the quirks of a romantic feeling, born of poetic impulses, reality and dreams. nine0003

The composer dedicated the cycle "Fairytale Pictures" to the German violinist, violist and conductor Joseph von Wasilewski, who at that time was Schumann's assistant in his work as the city director of music in Düsseldorf. Vasilevsky, in turn, after the composer's death, published his first biography in 1858. Schumann does not use titles for individual plays in his work and thus does not give us any clues as to what kind of characters or events may be depicted in each movement. The performers have only laconic tempo notations, in the case of the last, fourth, piece, supplemented by a remark "with a melancholy expression." nine0003

Felix Mendelssohn (1809–1847) created chamber and ensemble compositions throughout his life, experimenting with different compositions (from trios to octets) and playing a significant role in the development of the romantic direction in this area. The central place among them is occupied by two Piano Trios, written by the composer in his mature years and often called "big" for their scale.

Piano, violin and cello trio No. 2 (1845) appeared from Mendelssohn's pen at the time when he was already head of the Leipzig Conservatory, so he managed to compose mainly during the summer holidays. Mendelssohn dedicated the work to his close friend, composer and violinist Louis Spohr, who once played it with the author. nine0003

The four parts of the composition follow the traditional structure of the symphonic cycle - the romantic Mendelssohn remains a classically minded artist. The stormy dramatic beginning of the first movement (Allegro energico e fuoco) is reminiscent of Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture and his Scottish Symphony. The second movement (Andante espressivo) is a soulful lullaby for piano. The playful scherzo (third movement), like the scherzo from the music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, retains the dynamics of energetic movement until the last bars. The finale (Allegro appassionato) - the most famous part of the Trio - is notable for the fact that at the climax it sounds the melody of the chorale "Praise to Thee, Jesus Christ", which had previously inspired many baroque composers and was used by J.S. Bach in several of his Christmas cantatas. nine0003

Russian folk tales are familiar to many from childhood. For centuries, people have told their children kind and moral stories filled with magic and fantasy. So and Anatoly Konstantinovich Lyadov endlessly admired folklore. On hot summer days, he left St. Petersburg and went closer to the people to listen to folk songs and fairy tales. The creativity of the people inspired the creation of the beautiful symphonic music “Fairytale Pictures”.

Creation history

1881. The entire teaching staff of the St. Petersburg Conservatory went on summer holidays. Lyadov went to his favorite place. There, where he could continue to do what he loved - collecting fairy tales and folklore. In the village, he got acquainted with the original customs, listened to the shepherd's tunes, and rested in the bosom of nature. In a relaxed atmosphere, Anatoly Konstantinovich could be more attentive to the works that he read. Then for the first time he was able to read "Tales of the Russian people" written by Sakharov. He was especially impressed with the way Baba Yaga . The whole summer was devoted to the search for materials about the evil guardian of the forest. Never before has a composer been so passionate about his own work. But the summer passed unnoticed, and I had to return home again to start the new school year.

Only after more than twenty years in his own manuscripts, the writer found a long-forgotten entry about a fairy-tale hero. In 1904, the score of the first work from the famous triptych was completely finished. The premiere took place in March of the same year in a concert of the symphony assembly. The conductor was the famous Felix Blumenfeld. The concert was extremely successful. Critics will later write that the composition shocked the audience to the core. nine0003

The second work was also conceived in the 80s, but did not move the dead point until 1908. Then the composer decided to take materials from his own opera and finish what he started. " Magic Lake " in his performances must fully convey the fantastic atmosphere. This is an implicit mystery. This is where time must stop. Work on the orchestration began in the middle of 1908, this process did not drag on for a long time, so by the end of the year the musical picture was completely completed. For the first time, the audience was able to hear the creation in February of the following year at one of the most important symphony concerts. Conductor N. Cherepnin brilliantly coped with the task, and the audience applauded the author, recognizing him as a real musical genius. The work became one of the composer's favorites. nine0003

The third work " Kikimora " was also written in 1909. Sakharov's collection can be considered the program basis of the work. The first public performance took place in December. Managed the premiere of A. Siloti. For the third time, as in a fairy tale, the audience was positively disposed and warmly welcomed the new composition.

Particularly impressed were Lyadov illustrations for the fairy tale "Vasilisa the Beautiful", where on the first page there was Baba Yaga flying in a mortar. This was the main prototype of the image of the first symphonic miniature on a fantastic theme.

Content of works

It should be noted that the author himself did not combine the miniatures into one cycle. He was simply interested in composing folklore stories. Nevertheless, musicologists combine the compositions into one triptych, calling it "Fabulous Pictures". Each work has a program, and if the two extreme compositions depict the image of an evil character of Slavic mythology, then the middle miniature is a landscape sketch of a mystical place. Baba Yaga

Baba Yaga Lyadova is a collective musical image. The program of the work is an excerpt from the fairy tale "Vasilisa the Beautiful". This is the scene of the flight of the evil sorceress. One whistle and in a moment a stupa appears in front of her. In a swift whirlwind, the evil sorceress rises up. It is night outside, every animal and man is afraid of the evil force, hiding from it. There is silence around, only you can hear how the pomelo cuts the air around. So begins a new scary story with a happy ending. nine0003

Music fully demonstrates the image of Baba Yaga. The author himself confirmed the presence of a bright, specific image. The fantastic sounding in this miniature was achieved by using a number of musical expressive means:
