The Rainbow Fish Story - Bedtimeshortstories

The Rainbow Fish story has been adapted from the illustrator named Marcus Pfister. A long way out in the deep blue sea, there lived a fish. Not just an ordinary fish, but the most beautiful fish in the entire ocean. His scales were every shade of blue and green and purple with sparkling silver scales among them.

The other fish were amazed at his beauty. They called him ‘Rainbow Fish’. “Come on Rainbow Fish,” they would call, “Come and play with us!” But he would just glide past, proud and silent, letting his scales shimmer.

One day, a little blue fish followed after him. “Rainbow Fish,” he called, “wait for me. Please give me one of your shiny scales. They are so wonderful and you have so many.” “You want me to give you one of my special scales? Who do you think you are? Get away from me,” cried the Rainbow Fish. Shocked, the little blue fish swam away. He was so upset, he told all his friends what had happened. And from then on, no one would have anything to do with him. They turned away when he swam by.

What good were the dazzling, shimmering scales with no one to admire them? Now, he was the loneliest fish in the entire ocean. He decided to pour out his troubles to the starfish. He asked, “I really am beautiful. Why doesn’t anybody like me?” “I can’t answer that for you! But if you go beyond the coral reef to a deep cave you’ll find the wise octopus. Maybe she can help you!” replied the starfish.

The Rainbow Fish found the cave. It was very dark inside and he couldn’t see anything. Then suddenly, two eyes caught him in their glare and the octopus emerged from the darkness. “I have been waiting for you!” said the octopus with a deep voice. “The waves have told me your story. My advice is that give a glittering scale to each one of the other fish. You’ll no longer be the most beautiful fish in the sea but you’ll discover how to be happy!” “I can’t,” the troubled Fish started to say but the octopus had already disappeared into a dark cloud of ink. “Give away my scales? My beautiful shining scales? Never! How could I ever be happy without them,” he thought.

Suddenly, he felt a light touch of a fin. The little blue fish was back. He said, “Rainbow Fish, please don’t be angry. I just want one little scale!” The beautiful fish wavered. “Only one very very small shimmery scale. Well, maybe I wouldn’t miss just one,” he thought.

Carefully, he pulled out the smallest scale and gave it to the little fish. “Thank you very much!” the little blue fish bubbled playfully as he tucked the shiny scale among his blue ones. A rather peculiar feeling came over the Rainbow Fish. For a long time, he watched the little blue fish swim back and forth with his new scale glittering in the water.

The little blue fish whizzed through the ocean with his scale flashing, so it didn’t take long before the Rainbow Fish was surrounded by the other fish. Everyone wanted a glittering scale. He shared his scales left and right. And the more he gave away, the more delighted he became. When the water around him filled with glimmering scales, he, at last, felt at home among the other fish.

Finally, the Rainbow Fish had only one shining scale left. His most prized possessions had been given away, yet he was very happy. “Come on, Rainbow Fish! Come and play with us!” they called. “Here I come,” he said, and happy as a splash, he swam off to join his friends.

The Tale of the Fish. Lena Satin

Once upon a time in the blue sea there was one small fish. Her name was Rybka Bananka, and she was very sad. And she was sad because her tail was short. Well, not exactly short, just a little shorter than other fish. It's not even noticeable at all. But it seemed to Rybka-Banana that everyone was just looking at her short ponytail and laughing at her.

There was one boy among her fish friends, his name was Bananan, a good fellow, but that's just too shy. To him, the tail of Rybka-Bananka seemed not short, but very sweet and pretty. It is a pity that Rybka-Bananka did not know about this. She would then, perhaps, because of her ponytail, so not worried.

Fish-friends-girlfriends used to go to dance and play, they invite Rybka-Banana with them, but she doesn’t go, she is embarrassed of her tail.

So Rybka Bananka sits alone at home, and keeps thinking about how to lengthen her tail. She tried to do special exercises, and she was on a special diet - nothing helps!

- Well, - Rybka-Bananka thinks, - there is nothing else left but to ask the sea witch for help. After all, if she could turn the Little Mermaid's tail into legs, then she would certainly be able to lengthen my tail!

The sea witch lived far away, and various horrors were told about her. “The sea witch lives in a black-black cave,” some said. - There is not even a ray of light there, but only one blackness.

- Oh-oh-oh, - Rybka Bananka was afraid, - but she decided to swim to the witch.

- And the entrance to the cave to the sea witch is guarded by a terrible dragon, - others said. - The dragon spits with fire, and burns everyone who comes across his eyes with this fire!

- Oh-oh-oh, - Rybka Bananka was afraid, - but she firmly decided that she would swim to the witch.

- And to get to the sea witch, you need to swim through three seas and go around three islands, - said the third. - And predatory fish with sharp and huge teeth roam the seas. If you catch their eye, they will immediately swallow it. And on the islands fishermen live with strong and fine-meshed nets. If you fall into them - then you will die!

- Oh-oh-oh, - Rybka Bananka was afraid, - but - she swam to the witch.

And now she swims through three seas, dodges toothy fish, swims past three islands, eludes fishermen's nets.

In a word, I suffered a lot of fear. She finally sailed to the underwater rocks that are buried deep, deep under the water. The place is dark and deserted. No fish will swim, no crab will crawl, no seahorse will skip. Rybka-Bananka swims, looks around. Suddenly she hears, as if thunder rumbles from afar. Swims closer - and it's not thunder rumbles, but the dragon snores. Rybka-Bananka was delighted when she saw the dragon. Firstly, because I finally arrived at the right place. And secondly, because the dragon is sleeping. But early Rybka-Bananka rejoiced. The dragon sleeps and sleeps, and keeps one eye open. Rybka-Bananka hid in the shadow of the rocks, looks, watches. He sees some small fish swimming at a terrible speed. It can be seen that it is running away from a toothy predator, but inadvertently got too close to the rocks. The dragon sensed her in an instant, opened his other eye, and as he breathes fire on the fish, there was not even a wet spot left of it. Rybka-Bananka trembled with fear, but she does not leave her observation post, she looks further. And she noticed that the dragon does not always keep its eye open. From time to time the dragon, even for a second, closes its eye. And then Rybka-Bananka began to slowly approach the entrance of the cave. As soon as the dragon's eye closes, she will swim a little. The dragon will open its eyes, and the Bananka Rybka is already hiding, in the shadow of the rocks, its short-tailed one is not visible. So, slowly, gently, Rybka-Bananka swam up to the very entrance to the cave and slipped past the dragon. He didn't notice her.

And here Rybka-Bananka swims in a dark-dark, black-dark cave. It swims, bumps into walls, peels off its sides, touches sharp stones with its fins. An hour floats, two floats, and all around are the same dark darkness and sharp stones. Rybka-Bananka was completely desperate, apparently she got lost in this cave. And she decided to scream, to call the witch.

- It won't get worse, - Rybka-Bananka thought, but how she will scream at the top of her voice:

- Lady witch, lady witch, where are you?

- Yes, I'm here, - suddenly answered nearby. - Why are you crying, fool?

- Is that you, lady witch?

- Well, me.

- I'm sorry, lady witch, but I can't see you at all. Could you shed some light here, - asked Rybka Bananka.

- Well, maybe just a little, - the witch grunted. - I'm already old, my eyes hurt, that's why I'm sitting in the dark. But for you, so be it, I'll make it a little brighter.

- Hey, Svetlenky, - the witch barked, - light your flashlight, but just don't swim close.

Somewhere nearby a small fire was lit, and a funny little fish with a flashlight on its head swam up to Rybka Bananka.

- Hello, - said the little fish, - I am Svetlenky. Well, now you can see better?

- Yeah, - Rybka Bananka nodded and looked around.

She saw behind her a narrow passage with countless ledges against which she hit so painfully, and in front of her a huge hall, in the center of which sat a witch, almost indistinguishable in the weak light of Svetlenky's flashlight.

- Well, - said the witch, - tell me why you came. Yes, just hurry, otherwise this bright light of the eye irritates me.

- Could you, - Rybka Bananka spoke in a thin voice, - make me a long ponytail.

- Long ponytail? - the witch was surprised. - Is this one not good for you?

- It's very short, - Rybka Bananka sighed. - And it's so ugly.

- And for me, yours is nothing at all, - the witch noticed. - But if you really want to...

- I want, I want, - Rybka Bananka hurried. - Please make me a long ponytail!

- Okay, I'll do it! - What do you like?

- Ah, - Bananka Rybka said with her heart trembling with excitement, - make me a ponytail like a little mermaid!

- Well, you give, - the witch burst out laughing. - Have you lost your mind? Yes, look at yourself! You're the size of a mermaid's finger, where do you want such a tail!

- Yes, you feel sorry for something, - Rybka Bananka pouted her lips.

- Well, you're a fool, - the witch shook her head. - But let it be your way!

And just as the witch uttered these words, suddenly the Banana Fish was suddenly pulled down, and she flopped to the very bottom. Well, at least the bottom was sandy, otherwise our fish would have crashed to death.

- Well, - the witch's voice came from above, - are you comfortable with your new tail?

- I-I don't know... I can't even move!

- Not surprising. Your tail is heavy!

- Is it possible to make it a little lighter?

- And it's easier and more authentic... You yourself better understand what you want!

- I want the longest and the lightest!

- I'm telling you, it doesn't happen like that. Choose something else.

- Well then... Let it be not very heavy so that I can move... Is it possible?

- You can, you can... Go on!

- And long.

- Fu, tired already! Here you are - light and long!

Bananka Fish felt that the terrible weight that chained her to the bottom let her go, and she slowly surfaced towards Svetlenky, who was impatiently scurrying at some distance from the witch.

- How are you? - Rybka Bananka asked the luminous fish in a whisper. - Handsomely?

- Awesome! Svetlenky also answered in a whisper. - But only...

But Bananka Rybka didn't listen to him. She tried to look around herself. Even in this dim light, she managed to see that the witch had given her a long, long, magnificent, strikingly beautiful, graceful tail.

- Thank you, thank you, - Rybka Bananka murmured in complete delight.

- Not at all, - the witch grunted. - If you, such a fool, are satisfied, get out as soon as possible! And you, Svetlenkiy, put out your flashlight, you have no strength to endure! And take her to the exit. No matter how she gets lost again...

The last words the witch said in a very sleepy voice, and before Svetlenky had time to put out his flashlight, the witch was already snoring.

- Let's swim, - Svetlenky touched Rybka Bananka.

But then the witch stopped snoring and shouted after her:

- I know, I know, this new tail of yours is dear to you. But if someone or something else suddenly becomes dearer to you, then shout: "Give me back, take what is yours" and your tail will again become the same.

- Well, no, - Rybka Bananka laughed, - I will never part with my new, beloved ponytail.

- Well, it's up to you, - the witch grumbled and began to snore again.

And the impatiently waiting Svetlenky had already turned on his light on the sly and darted into the narrow winding passage leading out of the cave.

Banana Rybka rushed after him, but immediately stopped.

- Well, what are you doing, - Svetlenky called to her. - Swim faster.

- I can't, - Rybka Bananka whimpered plaintively. - The tail is stuck.

- Oh, my grief, - grumbled Svetlenky. - No wonder the witch called you a fool. Come on, let me push you.

Svetlenky came back, attached himself to the tail of Rybka Bananka and began pushing her forward with all his strength.

- Be careful, - yelled Rybka Bananka, - remember the tail!

- Come on, - Svetlenky got angry. - How are you going to live with such a tail? Oh, you suffer, you suffer!

- Beauty requires sacrifice, - Rybka Bananka proudly announced.

Svetlenky only sighed. Well, what was to be done with the tailed fool? And he again began to push and drag Rybka-Banana to the exit, ignoring her frightened cries.

At last they reached their destination. But getting out of the cave was not so easy: the dragon would hardly have missed the fish out of respect for her new tail.

- Well, what are we going to do? - asked Svetlenky.

- I'll slip through somehow, - Rybka Bananka answered nonchalantly. She thought that all the troubles were over.

- No, - Svetlenky shook his head. - With such a tail you will not slip. Okay, he said after a moment's thought. - I'll try to distract the dragon, and you get out of here quickly!

Fairy swam boldly right in front of the monster's muzzle. The dragon, struck by such impudence, roared and already opened its mouth, not to devour the luminous fish, not to burn it with fire. But Svetlenky suddenly turned somersaults, spun like a fiery wheel, and yelled in a loud voice:0003

- Circus! Last tour! The whole evening in the arena is the best clown and acrobat in the world!

- What-what? - The dragon was confused, which, probably, had never seen a real circus in his life.

And Svetlenky did something unthinkable. He wrote out intricate figures with his flashlight, tumbled, flew up like a rocket and fell down like a stone, portrayed simultaneously all the predators of the ocean and the tamer to boot.

And the shocked dragon broke down and laughed. He laughed so that tears flowed from his eyes, and he, of course, did not see how Bananka Rybka wagged her tail right in front of his nose and quickly hid among the rocks. And Svetlenky put out his flashlight and, leaving the dragon laughing to the point of complete exhaustion, also clung to the rock next to Rybka-Bananka.

Before Svetlenky had time to catch his breath, some huge shadow flickered nearby.

- Be careful, - Svetlenky whispered.

- It's okay, - Rybka Bananka also answered in a whisper, - neither you nor me will be noticed under the rock.

But she was wrong. It used to be, with her short tail, Bananka Rybka could easily find shelter for herself. Now its luxurious, but such a long tail, stuck out from under the rock and clearly indicated to the predator fish that something delicious was located right here. And she immediately attacked.

- Oh, oh, oh, - Bananka Rybka screamed in horror. But it was already too late. A huge mouth hung over her and was about to close, when suddenly...

Some small fish boldly rushed to the predator and pierced her right in the eye!

The giant fish shook its head in amazement and forgot to close its mouth. The banana fish slipped between the terrible teeth and darted deeper under the rock.

- All sorts of people roam here, - the predator muttered indignantly, and she hurried to get away.

And Svetlenky, amazed no less than the shamefully run away fish, stared at the little savior.

- Cool! - could not keep his admiration Svetlenky. - Simply class! And who are you?

"My name is Banana," the heroic fish replied modestly.

- Banana? - Rybka-Bananka stuck her nose out from under the rock. - What are you doing here?

- Well, - Bananan was embarrassed, - so, I'm taking a walk.

- Wow, walks, - Rybka Bananka laughed caustically, - how far you have climbed!

"Ungrateful," Svetlenky yelled indignantly. - He saved you, and you're laughing! Don't listen to her," he said to Bananan. - And, in general, do not pay attention to her! It's all because of her tricks! She, you see, begged the tail from the witch, and the tail, although beautiful, is terribly impractical! With such a tail, you can only swim in an aquarium, but you cannot survive in the sea-ocean! Are you listening to me?

But Banana didn't listen. He stared in admiration at Rybka Bananka, admiring her unprecedented beauty.

"You're beautiful," Bananan whispered.

The Bananka Fish coquettishly curved and wagged its tail so that the Bananan could even better see her magnificent new thing.

- Yeah, - Svetlenky guessed, - he's obviously in love with this fool! I'll go away, let them coo!

But there was no time to coo. The predatory fish, who seemed ashamed that she was afraid of small fish, returned. She looked menacing and clearly intended not to miss her dinner again.

"Run," Bananan shouted. He darted into a narrow passage between the rocks and pulled the Banana Fish behind him. Light-haired rushed after them.

The predator poked its nose into the stones, but could not penetrate the narrow crevice. And Bananan swam farther and farther, dragging his companions with him.

"Wait, wait a little," shouted out of breath Fish-Banana. - The tail is tangled.

- I knew it, - grumbled Svetlenky, who was swimming after her. - You are still suffering here with your tail.

- Don't grumble, - Bananan stood up for the silly fish and its tail. - For the sake of such beauty, you can suffer.

- Thank you, - Rybka Bananka said quietly. - You are a true friend. And you, - she turned to Svetlenkoy, - why are you swimming after us? Go back to your cave if you don't like my tail!

- Well, please, - Svetlenky was offended. - Very necessary!

He turned around and swam back. But he swam too far. After all, a predatory fish was guarding the rocks, still hoping to get its dinner.

Light-haired froze on the spot, not knowing what to do. Swimming forward meant falling into a toothy mouth, and he did not want to swim back. Rybka-Bananka offended him very much. He, one might say, risked his life when he distracted the dragon, and the stupid fish did not even thank him.

Suddenly Bananan appeared next to Svetlenky.

- Don't be offended, Bananan asked. - She's good, just a little capricious.

Light-haired stubbornly shook his head.

- Well, please, - continued Bananan, - come back. Take us a little more. We can't manage without you. It's a long way to go home, and the path is dangerous, and here is this tail...

- You said that the tail is good, - Svetlenky remarked maliciously.

"Not good, but beautiful," Bananan corrected.

- Isn't it the same thing?

"Depending on the circumstances," Bananan explained vaguely. - They swam, huh?

- All right, let's see, - Svetlenky agreed.

They returned to Rybka Bananka. She had already untangled her tail and looked expectantly at her companions.

"Sorry," Bananan whispered softly to the fish. - I saw how Svetlenky somersaulted before the dragon. He saved you, and you offend him.

Banana Fish lowered her eyes. She herself understood that she had acted badly, but it was beyond her strength to apologize!

But Bananan looked at her so sternly that Rybka Bananka sighed and muttered inaudibly:

- Forgive me. And thank you for everything.

- All right, - answered Svetlenky. - Move on.

And so they swam. It was hard to swim, because the chic fish tail either got tangled among the algae, or got stuck between the stones. But you still had to get your own food, and even have time to dodge predators! In a word, they sailed for a long time, but they sailed only a little and ended up near the island, where, remember, fishermen live with strong nets. And, of course, Bananan and Svetlenky dodged the net, while Rybka Bananka hesitated, and her luxurious tail got stuck in the net. Fish rushed about, fussed, but they didn’t know what to do. Banana even groaned in grief. If he had strong and sharp teeth, maybe he would have bitten the net, but where can you get teeth like that?

Light-haired suddenly rushed down and groped around, lighting the bottom with his flashlight.

"Here," he called to Bananan, "I've found it!"

- What is there, what? - Rushed to Svetlenky Bananan.

And Svetlenky was already rising to meet him, holding in his mouth a stone with sharp, sharp edges.

Bananan intercepted the stone and rushed to the net, where Rybka-Bananka struggled, tried to free herself.

- Drinking! We drank here, - Svetlenky shouted, lighting up the right place in a strong grid.

And Bananan started sawing furiously. He sawed and sawed, and Svetlenky pulled with all his might the strong fiber from which the net was made, and it did not give in and did not give in, but, finally, succumbed to their terrible efforts, and Bananka Rybka slipped out of the net.

And Bananan, having torn his mouth on the sharp edges of the stone and bleeding, lost consciousness and slowly sank to the bottom.

Fairy and Bananka Rybka hovered around Bananan, trying to help him, but blood continued to flow from his wounds, turning the water red.

In the seas and oceans, predators feel blood from afar. And for this tempting taste for them, they immediately rush to their future dinner.

And now, next to the poor fish, a terrible shadow of a shark flashed by.

- Aaah, - yelled Svetlenky and rushed towards the predator, blinding her with his flashlight. But what is a tiny glowing fish for a huge fish? The shark only delayed its attack for a minute.

- Stay away, little one, - the shark growled, waving Lighten One off, - or I'll get to you.

But Fairy didn't think of staying away.

- Drag him to the stones - he shouted to Rybka Bananka, frozen in horror, and he himself flickered in front of the very nose of the shark in order to delay it at least a little.

The shark snapped its teeth in anger, trying to swallow the Light One, but how can you grab such a crumb?

Meanwhile, Rybka Bananka dragged her wounded friend to the stones and began to squeeze Bananan into a narrow crevice between them. But the motionless body did not succumb to her efforts. Then the fish tried to penetrate itself into the crevice in order to drag Bananan into it, but the tail, its magnificent tail, did not allow it to do so.

- Fuck you, you worthless tail, - Rybka Bananka screamed in despair. And suddenly she remembered the words that the witch had shouted after her (the witch, apparently, was unusually smart). And Rybka-Bananka screamed with all her might: “Give me back, take what is yours,” and her new tail instantly fell off, and the old one seemed to grow. And then the fish hid with Banana among the stones.

Meanwhile, Svetlenky was completely exhausted. With a last effort, he extinguished his flashlight, dashed away from the shark, and hid at the bottom.

An angry shark circled around and swam away in search of more accommodating prey.

And everything became quiet on the seabed. There were also other predatory fish. Spinning and spinning and sailing away. And again - silence. Then sand stirred at the bottom. It was the Bright little eye that stuck out, made sure that everything was quiet and calm, and crawled out of his hiding place. Then he lit the flashlight and began to look for friends. And they are sitting between the stones, they are afraid to stick their nose out. Banana came to his senses, and Rybka-Bananka settled down next to him and cries, bursts into tears. What about Banana? He is silent, only stroking his girlfriend with a fin.

And then Svetlenky appeared. I saw a short-tailed Bananka Rybka and was also silent, sighing. So they were silent, sighed, and then Rybka-Bananka said:

- Well, okay, we swam home.

- Wait a minute, - says Svetlenky, - maybe you will swim to the witch again, ask for a new tail again?

- No, - says Rybka-Bananka. - I'm not up to snuff right now. Banana, you see, barely alive. We will slowly get home, there I will get him out, cure him. And you come to visit us. Will you find a way?

- I'll find it, - Svetlenky replies. “Now how are you going to do it alone?”

- I'll manage. With my own tail, I can handle anything. And thank you. I will never forget your heroism.

- Come on, - Svetlenky was embarrassed. - You, most importantly, because of the tail do not worry.

Rybka Bananka suddenly burst out laughing.

- What are you doing, - Svetlenky was surprised.

- Yes, I imagined myself hiding among the stones, and the tail sticking out. That look must have been stupid!

---

Deep, deep under the water, in her dark cave, the sea witch sleeps, snoring slightly. Occasionally she wakes up, stares her old eyes into the darkness and, bored with loneliness, calls Svetlenky. Then they drink tea together for a long time and remember the past.

- Do you remember, - a witch says once, - a fish came here alone, asked to lengthen its tail?

- I remember, - answers Svetlenky, - how not to remember her, such a fool. How much torment was, but still remained with the old tail.

The witch laughs, says nothing.

But Svetlenky remembers everything, he can't stop.

- How much work, how much work, - Svetlenky shakes his flashlight and sips seagulls, - but this fish has not received anything.

- Well, don't tell me, - the witch squints slyly, - she also got something.

- What did you buy? - Svetlenky is perplexed. - As it was short-tailed, it remained!

The witch says nothing, grins.

And Svetlenky keeps muttering and mumbling, as if Rybka Bananka has gone rogue, she hasn't begged anything from the witch, the stupid one.

- Uh, - the witch grunts, - you yourself, I see, have become a little stupid in old age. Well, tail? Is it in the tail? Life is not sweet to him, whose tail is not good, but to him who sees nothing but his tail.

- Well..., - Svetlenky began, but he didn't know how to object to the witch. And what's the objection? The witch is right, right. ..
