There’s more than one way to make your Fourth of July party colorful. That’s why we’ve put together different variations of red, white and blue for you to consider for your party and home.

Independence Day parties usually don’t stray much from the patriotic colors of the flag.  One might think that adding in more colors would be a distraction from the Americana palette, but just the opposite.  Including little accents of yellow and light blue can add fun to your decor. And speaking of fun, what’s better than a day filled with hotdogs and a night lit up with fireworks and sparklers?

What not to do on July 4 on Ulyanovsk Day for the sake of saving love

In the Orthodox calendar, July 4 is celebrated on Ulyanovsk Day. This holiday is dedicated to two martyrs - the Monk Prester Julius and Deacon Julian, as well as Julian of Tarsus.

    Saint Martyr Julian of Tarsus

Saint Julian lived at the end of the 3rd - beginning of the 4th centuries in Asia Minor. He was born into the family of a pagan senator and a Christian in the province of Cilicia. After the death of her husband, the mother moved with Julian to the city of Tara and, having baptized her son, raised him in Christian piety.

When the saint was 18 years old, Emperor Diocletian began a persecution of Christians. Among others, Julian was also captured. He was brought before the ruler Marcian for trial, where he was persuaded for a long time to renounce Christ. Neither tortures, nor threats, nor promises of gifts and honors could persuade the young man to offer pagan sacrifices and renounce Christ. The holy confessor remained unshakable in firm faith.

For a whole year the martyr was taken around the cities, in each of them they were subjected to interrogations and cruel tortures, after which they were thrown into prison. His martyrdom followed around the year 305. Subsequently, the relics were transferred to the city of Antioch.

Venerable Julius the Presbyter and Julian the Deacon

Julius the Presbyter and Julian the Deacon were brothers and lived in the 5th century in the Roman Empire. They devoted their lives to preaching the Christian faith in distant countries and provinces, and they persuaded the pagans to convert to religion not only by sermons, but also by miracles.

Once people were passing by a temple under construction. So that they would not be involved in labor, they pretended that they were taking one person to bury. To do this, one of the travelers pretended to be dead. The Monk Julian asked them if they were lying, but the people assured that their words were true. As soon as they passed by, the one who pretended to be dead died. After that, no one dared to lie to the brothers.

Having received the blessing of the Patriarch and the permission of the emperor, the holy brothers built many churches. Seeing his imminent death, Saint Julius went in search of a place to build the hundredth church, which he considered the last. Having reached Lake Mukoros, he saw its beautiful island in the middle. Due to the huge number of snakes breeding on it, no one could settle there. Saint Julius decided to build a church on this island. After praying, he, as if on a boat, sailed to the island on his mantle and hoisted a cross on it. In the name of God, the ascetic ordered all the snakes to leave the island. All poisonous reptiles crawled into the lake and, swimming across it, settled on Mount Kamunkin.

Julius founded a church on the island in honor of the holy Twelve Apostles. At that time, Julian finished building a church near the city of Gavdiana and decided to build a tomb next to the church. Thus, each of them prepared a place for his own resting place. Many sick people received healings from the tomb.

    July 4 — Ulyanov's day

On Ulyanov's day it was customary to pick linden flowers, which were just in bloom by this time. Among the people, many beliefs were associated with the tree. For example, linden was credited with the ability to rid a person of the evil eye. It was also said that the one who cut down the linden would certainly get lost in the forest. And if the linden near the house suddenly dried up, this foreshadowed bad changes in the family.

Linden was revered for a reason - its flowers have medicinal properties, have diaphoretic, antipyretic, expectorant, diuretic and bactericidal effects. In folk medicine, lime blossom has long been considered a reliable remedy for colds, coughs, and headaches. Powder from the leaves and seeds of this tree can stop bleeding and heal burns.

Girls also used linden for cosmetic purposes: its juice strengthens the hair, and the infusion of flowers gives freshness to the skin.

On Ulyanov's day in the old days they remembered the legend about the lovers Ulyana and Ulyana. They made an appointment with each other, but they could not meet each other. Ulyan walked through the forest and called the girl, but she did not respond, as she stared at the water in the river. As a result, Ulyan went home, having lost hope.

What can be done 4 July

On 4 July it was considered useful to make lime picking: a decoction of the flowers of this tree became healing.

It is good to take care of the garden and vegetable garden on Ulyanov's day - there will be a rich harvest.

If a girl did not like her boyfriend, she wrote his name on paper and burned it - the young man did not come to her again.

What not to do July 4

It was considered a bad sign if the linden tree died. If a person cut down this tree, then misfortune could befall him: he could get lost in the forest.

One should not quarrel and swear with loved ones - this will bring discord and restore relations will no longer be destined.

It is not worth taking on new business and taking trips - neither one nor the other will end well.
