Teachers and parents are raving!

We can help you Save Time and Have Fun Teaching!

“My 8-year-old son, Miles, is on the autistic spectrum and is totally and utterly obsessed with HFT. I have the songs in my head morning and night! He waits excitedly for the next video to watch. HFT has helped my son enormously with his clarity of speech and knowledge of letters, consonants, vowels, and math skills. A BIG thank you from us all.”

Charlotte H.

Mother

“I have been incorporating Have Fun Teaching songs, music videos, lessons, and worksheets since the company first began. I believe in the vision surrounding the entire brand. Eight years ago, my students had the privilege to record their own ‘music videos’ for the owners of HFT. Those students, some who have graduated, can still remember all of the words to those songs! Every teacher and parent should be using HFT. Your kids will thank you for it!”

10 Reasons Why Teaching Is Fun

Someone once said, “choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” That’s how I feel about teaching. Teaching is not only something that I love to do, but I think it’s a lot of fun. It's one of the reasons people become teachers. If you’re wondering why teaching is fun, here are some of my reasons.

  1. Every day is different. After spending some time working in a cubicle one summer, I realized that I wasn’t interested in a typical 9-to-5 job. I wanted a job that would bring different challenges every day. That is what teaching gives me. Of course, a lot of this comes from keeping things lively by using fun worksheets, doing fun projects, or throwing in some fun teaching games with my students. These activities help keep me on my toes and make my life more interesting and enjoyable.
  2. You get to watch students learn and grow. Some students are going to struggle more than others, but there’s nothing quite like witnessing a student have that light-bulb moment when everything finally clicks. Watching student growth, successes, and improvements is a rewarding process. It makes the day fun and keeps me smiling.
  3. There is never a dull moment. With a classroom full of different personalities, there’s always something going on.
  4. You get to learn new skills all the time. Some of the skills are necessary in order to keep up with educational trends. However, some skills are things that you pick up from your students along the way, too.
  5. There are lots of people to meet and relationships to develop.  I love meeting other educators who are passionate and committed to teaching and helping their students. I also love developing positive relationships with staff members, students, parents, and others in the community.
  6. Students are funny! Sometimes I have to stifle a laugh as students do something in class. Other times, I can’t help but join the class in fits of laughter with something that a student said or did.
  7. You get to be a role model, influencing students for the good. Students will look up to you. This may not seem fun. In fact, sometimes it seems daunting. However, there’s always the chance that something you say or do will make a lasting, positive impact on one of your students. That’s pretty cool to think about!
  8. You can help your students explore the world around them. Open your students’ eyes to things that they would never have seen otherwise through field trips, research projects, observations, and more.
  9. Teaching is gratifying. Sometimes it feels like a thankless job. However, one “thank you” from a student, former student, or parent makes all the difference. Gratitude in the form of kind words, letters, or end-of-the-year gifts, gives you an extra bounce to your step.
  10. You get the opportunity to watch your students cultivate talents, excel in extracurricular activities, make meaningful friendships, and discover things about themselves. It’s awesome when students keep in touch, so you get to see how they’re using those talents and skills!

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!” Teaching might be what you do for work, but it can include plenty of fun times! Teaching was definitely the right career path for me. I love it, and I have a lot of fun doing it! Look for the fun. Find reasons to smile during the day, and teaching will be a rewarding and fun experience.

5 simple reasons why school shouldn't always be fun

We often talk about how fun and exciting teaching different subjects is, we say that the teacher should interest children. But perhaps we got a little carried away and forgot that, first of all, a child in school must learn to work. The editor of WeAreTeachers gives five reasons why we should be mindful of more than just having fun.

I am currently writing a book for high school. I love to write and read many such books. I made friends with all the authors on Facebook and follow their lives with pleasure. But when I sit down to write, it's not so fun anymore. It's actually frustrating, stressful, and time consuming. The truth is, it's actually hard work, not fun.

Then why do we keep saying, intentionally or not, that school should be fun? There is relentless pressure from social media and Facebook teacher groups to say that every class we teach must not only meet the learning standard, but also be entertaining. We are always looking for activities that will allow us to kill two birds with one stone.

But I think somewhere along the way we have confused fun with engagement. After all, even hard work can be very exciting. And when we say that now we will write a summary together that will be wildly fun, and the children don’t feel it, we just put in them the idea that they are doing something wrong. And the truth is that hard work benefits children just as much as play does.

Here are five ways to speak more truthfully about her.

1. Hard work gives me dignity

My therapist once told me to avoid situations where I can't keep my dignity. Since that day, I have always adhered to this attitude. Give your students self-respect by setting high but reasonable expectations that require hard work and perseverance. Children will want to contribute, so you need to give them that opportunity.

Making them take on difficult tasks "because I said so" doesn't make sense. Together with the children, think about why in each case it is necessary to work well and for a long time. Start by talking about mowing the lawn or taking free throws. Go from the things they are used to and, as a result, suggest why working out mathematical problems or writing an essay is the same hard work that you don’t need to be afraid of.

2. The habit of working is a good development strategy

When we take children seriously, they begin to take themselves the same way and live up to our expectations. To get used to work well, you need to train this skill. If we always give easy and fun tasks, there is simply no such opportunity. Be sure you offer tasks that help them improve and feel challenged in every lesson. Tell them that it will be difficult at first, but you trust that they will manage. Teaching kids how to set realistic goals is a great way to get them thinking about how much work it takes to achieve something.

3. Identify the problem and then work on the solution

Teaching children to look for a problem and find solutions is an ideal way to work. More often than not, people get irritated when faced with a problem instead of stopping and figuring out how to deal with it. When your task becomes specific, it will be much easier for children to work on it. However…

4. Hard work is not always rewarded

I noticed an interesting feature of children: they believe that if they put a lot of effort into something, they will definitely be rewarded. Unfortunately, in life this is not always the case. Some children get brilliant grades without much difficulty. Others can’t even earn acceptable ones, although they put in a lot of effort. It is important to explain to children that they need to be realistic and realize that failure and failure will be part of their life anyway. It is not so offensive to work hard and get a low result if you are warned about such an outcome in advance.

5. Hard work precedes fun

When we repeat this mantra to children, we help them remember the benefits of work even when we are not around. This thought also highlights the difference between hard work and fun. I tell this to my children all the time.

I explain to them that I don't have fun all day at work, but I love her because she makes me more capable and smarter, I love making money. I don't lie or pretend to enjoy hard work, but I explain how it relates to the things that give me pleasure.

Developing the habit of working is a never-ending process, so you should constantly show children an example of how you and other people work, give them tasks around the house and offer to help you.

Meme to help! How to have fun teaching the humanities

Many adults complain that today's children have clip thinking. However, it can also be used for educational purposes! Our new blogger, teacher Viktor Bormotov, shared his life hack on how to captivate children with history or another humanitarian discipline - draw memes.

Information crushes with endless terabyte streams. In order for the brain not to develop indigestion, it is necessary to radically change the way we perceive reality. This is the revolution of millennial thinking that has taken place. The appearance of a meme is its reflection. The example is private, but very illustrative.

Meme is bright, short, understandable, multimedia and funny. It is easy to put a process, a fact, and even an entire historical epoch into it. But the textbook is boring, long, incomprehensible and not at all fun. "Many letters," as they say. Let many respected authors of manuals be offended, but this seems to me an absolute fact.

We talk about "historical processes", "professional orientation" and some kind of "mentality", and they (millennials) "chill", "troll" and "rogue". They want to be simpler, more fun, clearer, and at the same time more informative. Reality is read through posts on social networks (short texts), YouTube videos (no more than 20 minutes, otherwise you can fall asleep) or TED and through memes. By the way, a lot of scientific articles have already been written on this topic. Memes are defined, classified and sorted into pieces. The essence of the research: the meme is the consciousness of modern man (at least in part). Here is the material that is worth reading on the topic.

Is the revolution of thinking good or bad—question ten. It happened, that's a fact. I think that it is not worth discussing the issue, they say, the wrong youth went, they are lazy, they don’t want to read. Boring discussion, useless! It is necessary to use the obvious advantages of those very new ways of perceiving reality.

Now I will tell you about my own practice of introducing memes into the educational process. The first thing I discovered was that it is very effective to lead to the topic under discussion from it. The teacher, instead of simply dictating it, demonstrates the meme and asks to explain its meaning. Students are not limited in opinions and versions. As a rule, all of them turn out to be far from the truth. The lesson is based on an explanation of what is actually hidden behind the "funny picture". Specific examples.

1. Subject — social science, grade 10. Subject: "Human Needs"

Obviously, in order to reveal the meaning of the meme, you need to know Maslow's theory.

2. The subject is the foundations of philosophy, the second year of college, technical school. Topic: "Theory of knowledge"

To explain the meaning of a meme, it is necessary to know the basic provisions of philosophical systems.

3. The subject is the history of Russia, grade 10.

Subject: "The era of Peter the Great"

The meme reflects the event - the foundation of St. Petersburg (built on swamps, who does not know).

You can quickly find the appropriate meme for any section of the course. My practice convincingly shows that such a format for setting the topic of a lesson arouses interest in it and contributes to the heuristic activity of students, stimulates a serious understanding of information.

Another way to work with a meme is to create it. It is much more complex and requires more training.

Millennials have learned to consume, see humor and entertainment. However, a serious problem is independent creativity, which is possible only on the basis of studying the semantic content of reality. The consumer society in no way encourages a person to do something himself. Indeed, why? Everything is done for you. Need to make a presentation? Download on the internet. The same is true with abstracts.

I once tried to give a task to make a meme at home, but the effect was zero. In 99 cases out of 100, they were simply taken from the network. Conclusion: memes should be made exclusively in the classroom. Of course, in groups during the discussion. Such a task alone, as experience shows, is completely beyond the power. Before starting work, the teacher must give the basic material. Students can access Internet resources.

When studying in this format, students are ready to "shovel" large amounts of information, completely unusual ideas and solutions arise. Finished works can be displayed on the screen, a discussion can be held on the results. Again specific examples. From the work of the classics, so to speak.

1. The subject is the history of Russia, grade 10. Subject: Time of Troubles

Everything is clear without comments. Agree, it's great.

2. The subject is the history of Russia, grade 10. Subject: "The first Russian princes"

Let me remind you that Prince Igor wanted to take additional tribute from the Drevlyans. For which, according to the chronicle, he was killed.

3. The subject is the history of Russia, grade 10. Subject: "Mongol-Tatar yoke"

No comment. Well-deserved five in the magazine.

4. The subject is the history of Russia, grade 10. Topic: "Foundation of the Old Russian State"

We don't know exactly what Rurik looked like. Therefore, the students, quite legitimately, said: "We are artists and we see it that way." It was a lot of fun and most importantly, they will remember very well the fact that it is Rurik who is considered the founder of our state.

5. The subject is the history of Russia, grade 11. Subject: "USSR in the 30s"

Yes, according to Stalin, there is a lot of political entourage in the media, but we cannot bypass the fact of repressions.

With this, in my absolute conviction, positive practice, something needs to be done in terms of formalizing the process. Experienced methodologists will say: “It’s all good, of course, it’s interesting, but for circle or extracurricular work.
