Jack and the Beanstalk Movie Review

A Lot or a Little?

The parents' guide to what's in this movie.

What Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that part of the premise for this otherwise very family-friendly take on the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale involves a father who is said to have abandoned his family, and a scene where a child learns that his father is likely dead. The giant and his guard might frighten smaller children. Elsewhere, it's an extremely low-key affair -- very little violence, no language issues, and lots of silliness.

Cringe

Opens with a young girl - like, 9 years old - handcuffed in fur-lined cuffs with her arms above her head, wearing a short skirt, biting her lip seductively.  It's absurd, and sexist, and off-putting.  The whole movie continues in this fashion: women and girls pouting, finding themselves in provocative poses.   This is supposed to be self-aware and funny, but, like the numerous allusions to other movies peppered throughout the film, it comes off as clumsy and unsettling instead of clever.  Also, for unfathomable reasons, multiple characters speak in fake British accents.  A deeply cringe-worthy movie. Terrible gender messages.

Couldn't even finish it

After the opening scene with the exaggerated swooning of Chloe Grace, the flashy smile and cheesy over acted flirting between them.... Combined with the scene in the classroom relegating males to being prince's, hero's and charming, /females to being princesses, Damsels in distress, ingenues or ugly stepsisters... We couldn't continue. Even if this is sarcastic or resolves later on, it's hard for younger children to understand. We got about 30 minutes in and no one was interested in continuing.

What's the Story?

This live-action take on Jack and the Beanstalk begins when Jack (Colin Ford) discovers he won't pass fairy tale school without a better grade in heroism. When he sacrifices his computer for a few magic beans he tosses out the window, the adventure sprouts, and it's up the beanstalk with sidekick Grayson the Goose (Gilbert Gottfried) and friend Jillian (Chloe Moretz) to prove his heroism, battle a giant (James Earl Jones), and learn a few important lessons about perseverance.

Is It Any Good?

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK is not a home run, but it offers some decent fun for a slow afternoon. For younger kids, the silly antics and wisecracks of a golden-egg-laying goose, a gold-hoarding giant, and a mysteriously sky-bound beanstalk will be a big hit. Jack's desire to make a name for himself, prove his heroism, and make his daydreams come true are relatable.

Parents may find the effort a little underwhelming -- the acting doesn't always soar, the all-star cast isn't always put to good use, the plot is a little clunky -- but for a fun afternoon, there's enough family-friendly comedy here interspersed with winking jokes aimed at adults to enjoy in this old fairy tale with a new twist.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the notion of heroism discussed in the film. Jack wants to prove he's a hero by sacrificing something important, his beloved video game. Have you ever given up something for a greater good? What was it? What happened?

In a chic noir atmosphere, a little boy pursues a villain in a metropolis at night and saves a beautiful girl from captivity. But these are just fantasies: in reality, schoolboy Jack is sitting at the most ordinary lesson in an ordinary school for fairy-tale characters.

A strict teacher threatens to leave him for the second year, because the negligent student did not dare to do a real feat.

Confused Jack gets beans by chance. One of them is eaten by Grace's pet goose and becomes magical, the rest grow into giant stems.

The boy and the goose go up into the clouds and meet the girl Gillian. Together they must free her friend, who has been turned into a harp by an evil giant. A new acquaintance turns out to be a traitor and leads them straight into the clutches of a giant.

The villain admits that he manipulated the girl, so she goes over to Jack's side, this time for good. Children learn the truth about their own fathers, who languished in the giant's dungeon, the common pain brings them together.

Meanwhile, Jack's mother is doing everything possible to prevent the town authorities from cutting down the mysterious stems: she understands that this is the only way home from heaven for her son.

Together, the children kidnap the harp and release it from the spell, then descend to the ground. Goose Grayson retains his magical abilities and demands that the stern teacher Jack count the school year. A just wish is granted and the boy accepts congratulations from his friends.

When a movie is in good quality, it's already a pleasure to watch! Comedy is great, very funny!

American comedy aimed at children under 9years. Well, it’s not at all interesting for an adult to watch, the simplicity and primitivism of the plot even surprises a little, it’s just some kind of unsuccessful movie.

Shadow

is the most lame children's movie I've ever seen. stupid and pointless, with grimacing actors who think it's funnier. only to show it to morons for free...

Good fairy tale, I liked the movie. But how the Americans made a human children's film is still a mystery to me...

June 5, 2012

stupid American plot ... the same actors. movie sucks!

Chloe Moritz will soon grow into a talented actress. I don’t even know why Jack and the Beanstalk is so popular abroad: there are many other interesting fairy tales, I personally don’t understand this hobby, but it’s even fascinating to watch in places.

for them Jack and the beanstalk - like our Little Red Riding Hood, one of the main children's fairy tales. nothing, I liked the movie, the children came to visit their son, turned them online - they sat quietly all evening, they didn’t interfere with us.

What does "for them" mean??? Do you think that children in the West are different? Open your eyes, smart guy! They are the same everywhere, just like people in general. So you can watch online for children and adults all over the world, and everyone will find something of their own in this.

is an American classic in a very good production. This film can be safely shown to children - they will definitely enjoy watching it.

I watched it online with my kids, I honestly expected something like an old movie about Jack and the Beanstalk, but this is a very childish video. I didn't really like it, but the kids seem to be delighted.

Great kids movie

Nice kids movie. Special effects are below the level of the "Labyrinth", but this is not important. There is everything here - the formation of the main character and overcoming oneself, and forgiveness and struggle. And a happy ending. A good find with a school of fairy tale heroes and a character history book. In general

April 24, 2012

  • In the original fairy tale, it was not a video game cow that was sold for beans, but a real animal.
  • The harp maker goes by the name of Very Sadius, which plays on his emotional state: "very sad".
  • Pillow fight - the invention of the director, who is a fan of martial arts, to make the clash come to the children's category of the film, exactly such "weapons" of the ninja were involved.
  • The lumberjack who claims he would like to work in a pet supply store is a reference to the Monty Python episode about the dead parrot, where the situation is exactly the opposite.
  • Christopher Lloyd, as a teacher, works in a classroom where there is a drawing of Doc Brown's time travel device from the famous film "Back to the Future" - the actor played this character in 1985.
  • Jack's computer toy is with the teacher during the lesson, but after class the boy takes it out of his desk.
  • The food shelf in Jack's house has been empty for a very long time, it is covered with dust and cobwebs, and the boy is surprised by this, as if he had just learned that there is no food.
  • In the ninja pillow fight scene, the white warrior is presented as Chloe Moretz, but in shots lasting two seconds or more, it is clear that the person fighting is of Asian appearance and is much taller.
