Depending on your child’s age, there are different ways to approach bedtime reading.
With younger children, reading out loud together is most beneficial. As your child gets older and more confident, they may become more inclined to read the story to you.
Babies and Toddlers
When reading to your baby and toddler, we suggest books that have calming language and rhyme to lull your little one to sleep (1).
Once they’re able to, let them start choosing their own bedtime story book. This will help foster independence and they’ll feel important this way.
Preschoolers

Elementary & Older

Review of the book "Night Notes", which formed the basis of the film
JE White's The Night Notes is enjoying a second wave of interest since its recent adaptation on Netflix.
On the cover of the new edition appeared the faces of the characters from the film and the slogan "Compose to survive ...". This motto will help not only those who are captured by a book-loving witch, as happened with the main character, but also novice authors in general.
Young Alex, disillusioned with his horror stories, decides to destroy his notebooks with texts like a real writer: not just tear them up and throw them away, but burn them! To this end, the boy leaves his apartment at night, goes down the elevator, but suddenly finds himself on a strange floor near a strange door, through which the sounds of Alex's favorite horror movie and the smell of pumpkin pie are heard. nine0003
The door opens and a hand pulls the child inside. Surprisingly, the apartment has no horror TV, no cake, and even the front door turns into a flat wall. The young witch hostess explains to Alex that different bait acts on everyone: someone hears the music, someone follows the smell, but there really is none of this.
Alex is not the only one who has fallen into the trap. In the house of the witch Natasha lives another girl Yasmin, who has heard about other captive children.
At some point, this story begins to resemble a fairy tale about Hansel and Gretel. And indeed, Alex and Yasmine one day escape from an apartment without doors, find themselves in the forest and find a gingerbread house. But, alas, this place was part of a witch's dwelling, which is constantly changing in size and layout. Then the reader is referred to the tales of Scheherazade (unless, of course, the age of the audience of the "Night Notebooks" allows you to be familiar with "1000 and 1 Nights").
Alex's stories from the burnt notebooks got Natasha interested, and now she wants to listen to a new thriller every evening. But the lyrics are running out and Alex has to compose new ones in order to survive. It's good that he has a huge library of witches at his disposal. Alex is looking for inspiration, but finds notes in the margins of some girl who was held captive here earlier.

In this book, the author speaks, firstly, about the power of creativity. Often it does not correspond to the aspirations of the creator, disappoints him, but one day it saves him, even if in such a straightforward form. Therefore, in creativity it is important not to retreat, even if there is no response. And secondly, there is an instructive point: do not trust everything that looks attractive and familiar; a dangerous person can be hiding behind a pleasant smell from a neighbor's apartment.
If the book "Night Notes" can be unambiguously attributed to the "fantasy" genre, then the film of the same name, released in mid-September on the Netflix platform, tends to be an age-restricted thriller. Where the young reader imagines the realities of the book, taking into account the limits of his own imagination, the masters of computer graphics and special effects have added creepy dolls, masks and monsters. And if the plot twists in the book were reminiscent of the harmless Hansel and Gretchen, then in the film one can guess the allusions to The Ring and The Evil Dead.
But again, older viewers can see them. The film, of course, turned out to be very atmospheric and colorful, just designed for a different audience.
