There’s a reason Nancy Tillman has made this list twice. Her writing and illustrations are not only guaranteed to make you shed a tear, but they’re perfect for settling down your children.

In this title, Tillman emphasizes the power of a parent’s love. It starts out with the narrator telling your child you wanted them more than they’ll ever know.

The entire book is a reassurance for children that our love will be there for them, even if they can’t see us. This book is a beautiful read for all ages, but is recommended for children ages 4 and up.

You can’t go wrong with any book that is written and/or illustrated by Nancy Tillman. This title, in particular, made our list because the language used helps soothe children to a peaceful sleep.

Throughout the story, the whole world around your child is slowly settling down for the night until, eventually, it’s your child’s turn. We recommend this book for toddlers and preschoolers because of its soothing rhyme.

19. Steam Train, Dream Train

For any future train conductors, this title is the one for them. The dream train pulls into the station and the animals take turns loading up the train with their goods.

This is a big hit with preschoolers because of its use of animals as characters, and also the rhyming quality of the text. We like this book as a read-aloud option because you can add your own locomotive sound effects as well as other animal sounds.

20. The Giver

Best Extended Read

For those of you with older readers, this book is a must-have. Recommended for ages 11 and above, it has several hidden messages your reader will pick up on and appreciate.

This dystopian read follows Jonas, a 12-year-old boy who lives in a world void of color and strong emotion. He’s assigned to be the “Receiver of Memory” where he learns the good and the bad of the world’s past.

This proves to be a challenge for him. The reader is taken on a journey with Jonas as he navigates this newfound responsibility.

21. Hans Christian Andersen’s Complete Fairy Tales

Fairy Tale Classic

View on Amazon

View on Barnesandnoble

View on Abebooks

This fairy tale compilation is wonderful. It contains Hans Christian Andersen’s famous titles, including “The Ugly Duckling,” “The Red Shoes,” “Thumbelina,” and more.

These are recommended starting at age 8, but they can make great read-aloud stories until your younger child is ready on their own.

It has a beautiful cover design and the content is chock full of classical tales, perfect for any bookshelf. It also comes with a built-in ribbon bookmark so your reader will always remember where they left off.

Bedtime Reading by Age

Depending on your child’s age, there are different ways to approach bedtime reading. With younger children, reading out loud together is most beneficial. As your child gets older and more confident, they may become more inclined to read the story to you.

Babies and Toddlers

When reading to your baby and toddler, we suggest books that have calming language and rhyme to lull your little one to sleep (1).

Once they’re able to, let them start choosing their own bedtime story book. This will help foster independence and they’ll feel important this way.

Preschoolers

Preschool is a good time to start introducing different styles of writing, like fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and comics. If you want to encourage their literacy skills, shut the lights off and come up with your own tales together.

Be on the lookout for books with relatable characters. Your preschooler will enjoy mimicking them and the character’s bedtime routine.

Elementary & Older

Just because your child is reading on their own now (or is close to it), doesn’t mean you should give up on reading together. It will help them develop their reading skills and allows them to hear stories from different perspectives (2).

For lower elementary, books with easy-to-follow storylines are suitable. As they grow, starter chapter books and series are good to have on hand.

Older kids also can appreciate an author’s craft more. This allows for deeper conversations which, in turn, helps further develop your parent-child bond.

Nighty Night

There are so many great titles to choose from when it comes to bedtime reading. Finding the right ones for your child can become quite a task when you aren’t sure what they would like.

By bearing their interests and reading level in mind, along with the story’s content, you’re sure to pick titles your child will appreciate.

Our favorite is If Animals Kissed Goodnight. We love this title for the way it helps children use their imagination. The whimsical rhyme and soothing illustrations are sure to pique your kid’s interest.

So, we told you our favorite, which one is yours? Do you have a favorite that didn’t make this list? We want to know!

Review of the book "Night Notes", which formed the basis of the film

JE White's The Night Notes is enjoying a second wave of interest since its recent adaptation on Netflix. On the cover of the new edition appeared the faces of the characters from the film and the slogan "Compose to survive ...". This motto will help not only those who are captured by a book-loving witch, as happened with the main character, but also novice authors in general.

Young Alex, disillusioned with his horror stories, decides to destroy his notebooks with texts like a real writer: not just tear them up and throw them away, but burn them! To this end, the boy leaves his apartment at night, goes down the elevator, but suddenly finds himself on a strange floor near a strange door, through which the sounds of Alex's favorite horror movie and the smell of pumpkin pie are heard. nine0003

The door opens and a hand pulls the child inside. Surprisingly, the apartment has no horror TV, no cake, and even the front door turns into a flat wall. The young witch hostess explains to Alex that different bait acts on everyone: someone hears the music, someone follows the smell, but there really is none of this. Alex is not the only one who has fallen into the trap. In the house of the witch Natasha lives another girl Yasmin, who has heard about other captive children.

At some point, this story begins to resemble a fairy tale about Hansel and Gretel. And indeed, Alex and Yasmine one day escape from an apartment without doors, find themselves in the forest and find a gingerbread house. But, alas, this place was part of a witch's dwelling, which is constantly changing in size and layout. Then the reader is referred to the tales of Scheherazade (unless, of course, the age of the audience of the "Night Notebooks" allows you to be familiar with "1000 and 1 Nights").

Alex's stories from the burnt notebooks got Natasha interested, and now she wants to listen to a new thriller every evening. But the lyrics are running out and Alex has to compose new ones in order to survive. It's good that he has a huge library of witches at his disposal. Alex is looking for inspiration, but finds notes in the margins of some girl who was held captive here earlier. And this is the second time that literature has saved Alex! nine0003

In this book, the author speaks, firstly, about the power of creativity. Often it does not correspond to the aspirations of the creator, disappoints him, but one day it saves him, even if in such a straightforward form. Therefore, in creativity it is important not to retreat, even if there is no response. And secondly, there is an instructive point: do not trust everything that looks attractive and familiar; a dangerous person can be hiding behind a pleasant smell from a neighbor's apartment.

If the book "Night Notes" can be unambiguously attributed to the "fantasy" genre, then the film of the same name, released in mid-September on the Netflix platform, tends to be an age-restricted thriller. Where the young reader imagines the realities of the book, taking into account the limits of his own imagination, the masters of computer graphics and special effects have added creepy dolls, masks and monsters. And if the plot twists in the book were reminiscent of the harmless Hansel and Gretchen, then in the film one can guess the allusions to The Ring and The Evil Dead. But again, older viewers can see them. The film, of course, turned out to be very atmospheric and colorful, just designed for a different audience. He seems to be for those who still love fairy tales, but being embarrassed by this, he says that he loves horror. Yes, in fact, the main character, Alex, is like that himself. nine0003

The Night Notes is a children's horror story from J. A. White and NETFLIX - Hedwig

Jerry Alan White wrote The Night Notes in 2018 as a children's horror movie referring to the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel ". "Night Notes" is a modern version of the story of the Brothers Grimm, but not at all scary, but rather even a little naive. That is why in September 2021, the streaming service Netflix released the family horror film Night Notes, but first things first. nine0003

So, the main character is a 12 year old boy Alex. Alex is not an ordinary child, because he loves scary stories almost from the cradle and in general everything is terribly scary. And this love is expressed not only in collecting horror films and monster figurines, but also in writing their own stories that chill the blood. That's just because of a strange hobby, Alex has no friends at all and he is considered crazy. And so, when he decides to get rid of his notebooks with horror stories, he himself finds himself in a real horror movie. nine0003

There is a strange apartment in his house that lures children in with what they love. Someone comes to the smell of food, and someone like Alex came to the sounds of their favorite horror movie. And when Alex realized that something was wrong, it was too late. He was trapped in a strange apartment along with a creepy witch named Natasha.

The only salvation for Alex can only be reading his own scary stories. And to get out of the trap, he needs to find allies.

The book "Night Notebooks" turned out to be not scary at all, although very exciting. A child who is not yet familiar with the genre of horror and thrillers will like the book, especially since in addition to the main storyline, the book also contains small horror stories from Alex. But to an adult reader with his literary experience, the book will seem naive and predictable. And the stories written by the main character are very reminiscent of "horror stories" by the fire in a children's camp. However, "Night Notebooks" is a children's book, so we will not be equal to the opinions of adults. nine0003

"Night Notebooks" are definitely worth giving to a child who is already 12 years old. After all, every reader will like a magical cat with amazing and slightly frightening abilities.

But the film "Night Notebooks" is better to bypass, because it turned out to be far from childish, and the age marking of 6+ is clearly a mistake.
