Homer Simpson is not a neurologist, but clearly has some understanding of how the brain works. In one of the episodes of the series, the cult character explained to his wife Marge why he sees no point in studying: “Every time I learn something new, it pushes old information out of my brain. Do you remember one time I took a course on making homemade wine and forgot how to drive a car?”
A team of British scientists from the University of Birmingham found out that the "Homer Simpson effect" really exists. In a paper published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, researchers hypothesized that the act of memorizing new information can prevent a person from remembering similar events or make memories of them completely inaccessible.
And if in 1994 British neuroscientists found out that memorization can lead to forgetting old information and that this may be due to a suppressive signal from the frontal cortex that “kills” similar memories, then over the next years, evidence of this will be found failed.
One reason is that functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) makes it difficult to distinguish between areas of brain activity associated with corresponding memories.

In a recent study, project author Maria Wimber and her colleagues recruited 24 healthy volunteers, whose visual memory was tested through the following exercise: participants were shown words, each of which was associated with a pair of images. For example, the word "sand" was shown with a picture of Marilyn Monroe and then with a picture of a hat. After that, the researchers scanned the brains of participants performing an association recovery exercise: they saw one of the previously demonstrated words and had to match it with the first picture with which they associated this word.
The researchers wanted to track and compare changes in participants' memories of images they were asked to remember versus those they weren't asked to remember.
They hypothesized that "cue" words would activate brain regions for both associated images and that the process of recalling one image would activate mechanisms that suppress memory of the "competing" image.
To test this, the scientists scanned the participants' brains again, showing them half of the images they had seen before, randomly shuffled with other similar images. Thus, with the help of specially developed software for analyzing fMRI data, they were able to identify areas of brain activity responsible for certain recalled images.
How a dog became a friend of man

Analysis of the data obtained during the scans confirmed the predictions of the researchers. During the recall process, the words were shown several times, forcing the participants to repeatedly recall the correct image and reinforce those memories.
The researchers then turned their attention to the prefrontal cortex, parts of which were identified as the likely source of the vertical control mechanism that detects and suppresses "interfering" memories. In support of this idea, they identified a small area of the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex associated with the suppression of competing sites of activity.
During the recall process, activity in this area of the brain gradually decreased when the reminder words were shown repeatedly, presumably because the memories were strengthened each time, so that the task of suppressing competing memories became easier.
Why more boys are born
Researchers have finally managed to answer the question why, according to statistics, all over the globe...
04 April 12:48
Wimber and colleagues say their findings strongly suggest that the process of remembering leads to forgetting by suppressing brain activity that codes for similar memories. They believe that this is an adaptive mechanism that increases the likelihood that we successfully encode and remember only the most important information. Vertical prefrontal memory control does not seem to work in schizophrenia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

"Keep it simple or you'll be punished!" Parenting Rules from Homer and Marge Simpson
The first episode of The Simpsons aired on December 17, 1989. And although at first glance this family can hardly be called perfect (and even more so from the second glance), millions of viewers fell in love with the parents of Lisa and Bart. We have collected for you the rules of education from Marge and Homer!
1. Love children for who they are
- “Children are great, Apu. You can teach them to hate what you hate."
- “Children are our future. That's why they need to be stopped now."
- "Children, you are almost like family to me!"
- "Children are the same monkeys. Only there is more noise from them.”
- "I see the smiles of my children - and I understand that they are up to something bad."
2. Do not depend on other people's opinions
- “The only way to make everyone think good of you is to make everyone think bad of themselves. I'm tired of giving everyone the pleasure of thinking well of myself ... "
- "Being a mother means sometimes doing things that make your child not want to talk to you."
- "Keep it simple or you'll be punished."
- "Father never believed in me. I will not repeat his mistakes: from today I will be gentler with my son. And tougher with my father."
3. Don't overdo parenting
- “The key to parenting is not to overdo it. Because overthinking leads to…what were we talking about?”
- "The sooner the children talk, the more often they will argue."
4. Treat juniors and seniors equally
- “We are going to the parents' meeting, we will be back for dinner.
- What will be for dinner?
- It depends on what the teachers say. If you studied well, then wait for pizza, if you studied poorly, then ... poison.
- And if one studied poorly, and the other - well? Pizza with poison?
- No, I'm not going to make two purchases!
5.
Don't make impossible promises- “- Dad, you promised to take us to the lake.
- I promised a lot, so I'm a good father.
6. Don't waste energy on nonsense
- “Children, you tried to do it, you put in a lot of effort, but you still failed. The lesson is: don't make an effort!"
7. Give children what they want
- “- What does my little girl want?
- Lack of mood swings and some stability in my life.
- How about a pony?
- Good.
8. Don't be afraid to make mistakes
- “Everyone makes mistakes. After all, even pencils have erasers.”
- “My mother once said one thing that haunts me. She said, "Homer, you're a big disappointment." She meant something."
9. Don't lie
- “Marge, there are two people involved in lying. One to lie and one to listen."
10. Loving family
- “Sometimes I feel like we are the worst family in town.
