7 Best Free OCR Tools to Convert Images to Text • Oki Doki

Take a scanned image (or take a picture with your mobile camera) and Presto - OCR will convert those images to text. This is the speed of artificial intelligence at work.

Optical character recognition (OCR) software convert pictures to text. The OCR software parses the document and compares it to the fonts stored in their database and/or noting features specific to the characters. Some OCR programs also check spelling to "guess" unrecognized words. It's hard to achieve 100% accuracy, but that's what most programs aim for.

OCR software can be a quick way for students, researchers and office workers. So let's play with a few more and find the best OCR software for your needs.

Windows programs, mobile applications, games - EVERYTHING is FREE, in our closed telegram channel - Subscribe :)

1. OCR using Microsoft OneNote

with handwritten notes.

  • Drag the scanned image or saved image to OneNote. You can also use OneNote to clip part of the screen or image in OneNote.
  • Right-click on the pasted picture and select Copy text from picture , The copied OCR text goes to the clipboard, and now you can paste it back into OneNote or into any program like Word or Notepad.

OneNote can also extract text from multipage printouts with a single click. Insert a multi-page printout into OneNote and then right-click on the currently selected page.

  • Press Copy text from this printout page grab text from this selected page only.
  • Press Copy text from all pages of the printout Copy text from all pages in one shot, as shown below.

Please note that recognition accuracy also depends on the quality of the photo. This is why optical handwriting recognition is still a bit fuzzy for OneNote and other OCR software on the market. However, it is one of the key features in OneNote

2. SimpleOCR

The difficulty I had with handwriting recognition using MS tools could be solved in SimpleOCR. But the software only offers handwriting recognition as a 14-day free trial. Although machine recognition print not there are some restrictions.

The software looks outdated because it has not been updated since version 3.1, but you can still try it because of its simplicity.

  • Set it to read directly from the scanner or by adding a page (JPG, TIFF, BMP formats).
  • SimpleOCR offers some control over the transformation through text highlighting, image selection, and text ignoring functions.
  • Convert to text takes process test step ; the user can correct inconsistencies in the converted text using the built-in spell checker.
  • The converted file can be saved in DOC or TXT format.

SimpleOCR was fine with plain text, but its handling of multi-column layouts was a letdown. In my opinion, the conversion accuracy of Microsoft tools was significantly better than SimpleOCR.

3. Photo Scanning

Photo Scan is a free Windows 10 OCR application that can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store. The app, created by Define Studios, is ad-supported, but it doesn't ruin the experience. The application is an optical character recognition scanner and a QR code reader.

Specify an image or printout of a file in the application. You can also use your computer's webcam to view the image. The recognized text is displayed in the adjacent window.

The text-to-speech function is the highlight. Click on the speaker icon and the application will read aloud what it just scanned.

Not very good with handwriting, but print recognition was adequate. When done, you can save the OCR text in multiple formats such as Text, HTML, Rich Text, XML, Log Format, etc.

4. (a9t9) Free Windows OCR Application

(a9t9) Free OCR Software is a universal application for the Windows platform. So you can use it with any Windows device you have. There is also an online equivalent of OCR using the same API.

(a9t9) supports 21 languages to parse your images and PDF to text. The app is also free to use and ad support can be removed with an in-app purchase. Like most free OCR software, this idea is for printed documents, not handwritten text.

5. Capture2Text

Capture2Text is a free OCR software for Windows 10 that provides you with keyboard shortcuts to quickly recognize text on the screen . It also doesn't require any installation.

Use the default key combination WinKey + Q to activate the recognition process. You can then use your mouse to select the part you want to capture. Press Enter and then the selection will be optically recognized. The captured and converted text will appear in a pop-up window and will also be copied to the clipboard.

Capture2Text uses Google's OCR engine and supports over 100 languages. It uses Google Translate to convert the captured text into other languages. Take a look inside settings configure various settings provided by the software.

Download: Capture2Text (Free)

6. Easy Screen OCR

Easy Screen OCR is not free. But I mention it here because it's fast and convenient. You can also freely use it for up to 20 times without subscription. The software runs from the system tray or taskbar. Right click the Easy Screen OCR icon and select Capture from the menu. Take a screenshot of any image, website, video, document, or anything else on the screen by dragging the mouse cursor.

Easy Screen OCR then displays a dialog box with three tabs. On the Screenshot tab, you can view the captured text. Press the OCR button to read the text from the picture. Optically converted text can now be copied from the Text tab of the dialog box.

You can set the recognition languages for text recognition in the software settings. More than 100 languages supported The software uses Google's OCR engine.

Download: Easy Screen OCR ($9 per month)

Also: OCR with Google Docs

If you're away from your computer, try using Google Drive's OCR features. Google Docs has a built-in OCR program that can recognize text in JPEG, PNG, GIF, and PDF files. But all files must be 2MB or less and text must be 10px or higher. Google Drive can also automatically detect the language in scanned files, although accuracy with non-Latin characters may be poor.

  1. Sign in to your Google Drive account.
  2. Click on New > File Download . Alternatively, you can also click on My Drive > Download Files ,
  3. Find the file on your PC that you want to convert from PDF or image to text. Click on the open button to download the file.
  4. The document is now in your Google Drive. Right click on the document and click Open With > Google Docs ,

  1. Google will convert your PDF or image file to text using OCR and open it in a new Google Doc. The text is editable and you can fix the parts where OCR was unable to read it correctly.
  2. You can download customized documents in several formats supported by Google Drive. Choose from File > Download as menu.

Free text recognition software of your choice

While the free tools were adequate for typed text, they failed to cope with normal handwriting. My personal preference for using implicit OCR is with Microsoft OneNote because you can make it part of your note-taking workflow. Photo Scan is a universal Windows Store app that supports line breaks with a range of document formats that can be saved.

But don't let your search for free OCR converters end here. There are many other alternative ways to recognize text and images. And we have put some online OCR 9 tools0003

Practice 2.7 OCR for Image Documents

Optical recognition algorithms

If the original document has typographic quality (large enough font, no poorly printed characters or corrections), then recognition is carried out by comparing with character templates. First, the bitmap of the page is split into individual character images. Then each of them is successively superimposed on the symbol templates available in the system memory, and the template with the least number of points different from the input image is selected.

When recognizing documents with low print quality (typewritten text, fax, etc.), a method of character recognition is used based on the presence of certain structural elements (segments, rings, arcs, etc.) in them. Any symbol can be described through a set of parameters that determine the relative position of its elements. For example, the letter H and the letter I consist of three segments, two of which are parallel to each other, and the third connects these segments. The difference between the letters lies in the size of the angles that the third segment forms with the other two. When recognizing by the structural method, characteristic details are distinguished in a distorted symbolic image and compared with the structural patterns of symbols.
