Engaging Letter Sound Songs - Preschool Inspirations

We have searched high and low for the perfect letter sound songs to accurately teach the letter sounds. Correctly learning the letter sounds is a critical step into the world of pre-reading, and learning through music makes the process fun and memorable! For more awesome and educational songs, don’t miss our compilation of the best songs for kids.

One thing is for sure – letter names, sounds, and formation are an essential part of a preschooler’s day. Teaching the letter sounds accurately is so important to get right the first time! Otherwise, you’re accidentally setting yourself, and your kids, up for a world of frustration and re-training. Using high-quality letter sound songs to teach makes this even more engaging and fun!

Before we get into the songs, let’s briefly go through some of the most common letter sound mistakes.

Common Letter Sound Mistakes

1. Adding the Schwa Sound

A common mistake that many make when teaching letter sounds to preschoolers is adding the schwa sound (an unstressed vowel sound) to the end of the sound – think /l/ prounounced as /luh/, or /m/ pronounced as /muh/.

It may seem like that extra vowel sound added on to the end is really not all that consequential. But that extra vowel can make things really confusing for kids! You might not even notice a problem until they come to the next stage of reading: blending and segmenting sounds.

When young children are learning their letter sounds, adding those vowel sounds to the end can really hinder their ability to blend sounds together. For example, if a child has correctly learned all their letter sounds, they are on the path to blending three-letter CVC words such as tag, mop, and pig.

However, if they learn that /t/ says ‘tuh’ and /g/ says ‘guh’, suddenly blending the word tag goes from /t/ /a/ /g/ to /tuh/ /a/ /guh/. Young children would hear those incorrect sounds being blended and feel frustrated that the word doesn’t sound the way it is spelled and make reading feel very confusing and unpredictable.

2. Not Prounouncing the Letter Sounds Correctly

There are FOUR different letter-sound categories:

  1. STOP SOUNDS: B, C, D, G, H, J, K, P, and T

These are the quick and quiet sounds of the alphabet. They make a fast, short sound that does not continue on. These sounds can be especially tricky and are often subjected to the unwanted schwa at the end (like /buh/ or /puh/ instead of the hard /b/ and /p/.

2. CONTINOUS SOUNDS: F, L, M, N, R, S, V, Z

These sounds are the most fun and generally some of the first letter sounds to be taught.  These sounds are one long fluid sound. The letter sound /s/ is a great one to start with since it makes the all-familiar snake sound and it’s an easy sound for students to replicate.

3. COMBINATION/TRICKY SOUNDS: H, Q, W, X, Y

These sounds can be tricky because they may contain a combination of continuous and stop sounds. For example, the letter sound /h/ should sign like a dog panting. So the sound is a stop sound but we would model it continuously, /h/ /h/ /h/. When pronouncing the letter sounds /w/ and /y/, you need to be especially careful not to add the /uh/ (schwa sound) to the end but rather clip or stop the sounds at the /w/ and the /y/.

4. VOWEL SOUNDS: A, E, I, O, U

These tricky vowels are often the HARDEST for kids because the vowel sounds have such similar sounds. Focusing on the shape of the mouth and the tongue’s position is very helpful in teaching correct vowel pronunciation. Plus, we know that each vowel has two sounds – the short and the long sound.

Boring English for children: learning the alphabet

It is better to learn any foreign language from childhood. It is known that children who grew up in a multilingual environment are much easier to adapt and absorb new information much faster.

In order for a child to start learning English as early as possible and not get bored of this process, it is enough to turn boring learning into a game. So it will become much easier for the baby to memorize new words and phrases, and you will spend time with your child not only fun, but also productive.

English alphabet

The English alphabet is called alphabet or simply ABC. It has 26 letters, of which 20 are consonants and only 6 are vowels.

Almost all letters of the alphabet are pronounced the same by Americans and British, except for the last one. In American English, Z will sound like "zi" [ziː].

The study of the alphabet usually begins with an alphabet song (alphabet song): this way it is easier for the child to remember the pronunciation. She sings along the lines:

It is with the study of the alphabet that an exciting journey into any foreign language begins. Everyone needs to know ABC by heart in order to know how to write and pronounce individual letters correctly. Especially if you need to spell a word. Spelling is how a word is spelled. There is no direct analogue of spelling in Russian, but the Americans even have a whole Spelling Bee game in which you need to spell a word without errors. Spelling Bee competitions and competitions are often held in the USA.

But you need to start simple, especially for children. We tell you a few tricks on how to make it so that your child learns the alphabet as easy as ABC (easier than easy).

Word Cards

One of the most effective ways to learn new words and remember the alphabet is to make colorful cards with letters and words that begin with them and hang them in a prominent place.

The same technique can be used to enrich vocabulary: just hang cards with translations over the objects that you have in your apartment - let the child remember how words are spelled and pronounced.

One of the easiest options is to use words that are familiar to the child. It can be the names of animals or everyday objects.

Games for learning the English alphabet for children

Interesting games using the same cards will allow the child to quickly get used to and not get bored while learning the English alphabet. What can you play with your child:

Draw a letter

Tell your child a letter of the English alphabet and ask them to draw it with their fingers or with their body. You can play in turn and show some letters yourself.

"Draw a letter"

Put the alphabet cards in front of the child and invite him to draw the letter himself on a piece of paper. So he will quickly learn not only to visually recognize letters, but also to write them in the future. Similarly, you can take plasticine and ask the baby to mold the letters of the English alphabet from it.

Word Ball

A more active game in which you can pass the ball to each other and name letters in alphabetical order or, for more advanced ones, words that begin with that letter.

Stop song

Place the letter cards in front of the child and turn on the alphabet song in English. Stop it at an arbitrary moment - the child must repeat the last letter he heard and show the corresponding card.

Cards with both letters and words can be used for this game. Show the child the image in the picture and say the word. So, you can show a picture with a pig (pig) and say “tiger” (tiger) out loud. If the child says “no”, then he should name what is actually shown in the picture.

Come up with your own games and tasks, ask your child what he would like to play. Watch cartoons in English together and sometimes address him with the usual requests in English and let him also sometimes use English words in everyday speech.
