The best level 1 reading books can help your future bookworm fall in love with reading. But before you fill that bookcase full of your childhood favorites, it’s important to know that there are levels this -ish, mama. Yes, literal levels. When shopping for books for new or learning readers, you don’t want anything too easy or too difficult. You also want to be sure that it’s something that will actually hold their attention and get your LO interested in books (hopefully enough to want to continue reading on their own). It’s a lot to take into consideration! While filling up a bookshelf with the classics may be an understandable first instinct, it’s important to get what you’re child will both enjoy and learn from.

“Let your child’s library be determined by what they want to read. Building reading fluency is all about practice. And if your child is reading what appeals to them, they will want to read more and more,” advised Rachel Matson, the associate editor at Scholastic. “Passion for the book is more important than if your child is reading above or below level.”

That’s right. It doesn’t matter if the book is about ponies, pirates, or Olaf the Snowman — as long as they want to read it!

What is a level 1 reader?

Generally, there are five different categories (I Can Read, Ready to Read, Hello Reader, Step into Reading, and Brand New Readers) and four easy reader levels (Levels 1-4), each with various subcategories for different ages. Level 1 readers are usually around five or six years old, the age most children begin kindergarten. Unfortunately, there isn’t one set of industry standards across publishers that categorizes level 1 reading books. (Which makes this hella confusing for us parents). However, all the best level 1 reading books have the same characteristics: a simple vocabulary with familiar high-frequency words, repetition, and illustrations that support the text on every page. Shira Stein, a New York-based literacy specialist and tutor, gave Scary Mommy a little insight:

“Most publishing companies issue some version of early leveled readers. And these books can be very helpful in supporting your child learning to read because they are written with this specific audience in mind,” recommends Stein.

The Five Finger Rule

But how do you know if that level 1 reading book is right for your reader? Stein recommends using the Five Finger Rule! “If your kiddo opens a book and runs into 5+ unfamiliar words, that book is too hard. But zero unknown words is too easy,” Stein explains. So, it’s best to find a sweet spot in the middle. A book that has 2-3 new words per page is perfect for your learning reader.

I know that seems like a ton of info, mama — but don’t worry. We’ve sifted through all the leveled easy reading books from different publishing houses to collect the best level 1 reading books that are actually easy to read. Check them out below!

Books that will inspire a child to study astronomy

Photos: Depositphotos / Illustrations: Julia Zamzhitskaya

Astronomy as a school subject for many years was in the “blind zone” and left it only four years ago, when it returned to school. Candidate of Sciences, Senior Lecturer at the Special Educational and Scientific Center of Novosibirsk State University, Head of the Laboratory of Astronomy of the Club of Young Technicians of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Lecturer of seminars on astronomy for teachers of the Trajectory Foundation Dmitry Epshtein prepared for the Teachers Council a selection of books for different ages that can make children fall in love with the science of stars .

1. George and the Mysteries of the Universe. Stephen and Lucy Hawking

Age: 7+
Difficulty level: 1/10

English astrophysicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking can be safely called the most famous scientist in the world. But few people know that, in addition to serious scientific works, he, together with his daughter Lucy, wrote a whole series of books about the third grader George, who, thanks to a supercomputer, went on a space journey. Readers will unexpectedly visit different places in the solar system, learn about its "inhabitants" and even find themselves near a black hole. Filled with humor and childish spontaneity, this captivating story is great for elementary school age.

What to watch in addition: National Geographic documentary "Journey to the End of the Universe"

2. "The Universe in Questions and Answers". Vladimir Surdin

Age: 15+
Difficulty level: 8/10

The most unusual book by the Russian astronomer, associate professor of Moscow State University Vladimir Surdin, who wrote hundreds of books on astronomy. Together with Anatoly Zasov, he published a new textbook for schoolchildren, which contains up-to-date information. Unlike other manuals, in which the theory is presented in the form of an infinite text, like our Universe, this book immediately immerses schoolchildren in solving astronomical problems, questions and tests. The tasks are sometimes difficult, but extremely interesting. Here are examples of some of them:

To the pole

The aircraft took off at the equator at 00:00 GMT and is flying north at a speed of 900 km/h exactly in the direction of the magnetic compass needle. At what time will it fly over the geographic North Pole?

Blue Planet Earth

How did astronomers know, long before the first flights into space, what color our Earth is when viewed from a great distance?

Route on the Moon

From what point on the surface of the Moon should the lunar rover leave so that, having traveled 35 km to the north, then 20 km to the east, and then 35 km to the south, it would return to the starting point?

What to listen to: The Big Beard Theory podcast

3.

Superobjects. Stars are the size of a city. Sergey Popov

Age: 12+
Difficulty level: 5/10

A book that begins with the sentence “Sooner or later our civilization will perish in a cataclysm” cannot but please a teenager. Astrophysicist and popularizer of science Sergei Popov dedicated it to the love of his life - neutron stars. Schoolchildren will learn why they are called superobjects, why their research has been awarded two Nobel Prizes, and who the "white rabbits" are. All this is stated in an accessible and understandable language, with interesting examples and analogies.

The book was reviewed by outstanding modern scientists, popularizers of science who work not only with stars, but also with children in the astroschool — Dmitry Wiebe and Anton Biryukov.

What to see in addition: Lectures by Sergei Popov on energy sources of cosmic processes.

4. Blue dot. Carl Sagan

Age: 8+
Difficulty Level: 3/10

The earth is just a small dot in relation to the universe. Little blue dot. The author, Cornell University astronomy professor and NASA consultant Carl Sagan, takes us on a synthesized journey through space and time as readers watch major discoveries in astronomy unfold like moviegoers. Sagan is confident that space exploration is necessary to ensure the safety of our planet and to prepare the so-called plan "B" if there is a real threat of a collision of the Earth with an asteroid. I am sure that reading this book will leave few people indifferent and you will read other books by Sagan with interest.

What to watch in addition: Carl Sagan's mini-series Space: Space and Time

5. The Beauty of Physics. Frank Wilczek

Age: 12+
Level of Difficulty: 6/10

Frank Wilczek, an American theoretical physicist and Nobel laureate, dedicated his book to the organization of the world and the search for the deepest design of nature. It gives the reader the opportunity to feel the beauty of physics and astronomy. The author makes us take a different look at the works of Plato, Pythagoras, Newton and Maxwell and introduces us to the greatest female mathematician Emmy Noether, who made a huge contribution to algebra and physics: she changed the theory of rings, fields and algebras, discovered the connection between symmetry in nature and conservation laws.

Wilczek gives many sometimes very unexpected examples of how our world is full of beauty, symmetry and consistency in its expression, both material and mathematical - from the smallest particles to the largest structures in the universe. This book is an excellent guide to how wonderfully the world around us works.

What to see in addition: Viktor Solkin's lecture "Astronomy in Ancient Egypt"

Teaching aids in English for children aged 6-15 ‹ Ingleks

Everyone remembers how at school we were forced to study with boring, obsolete and dilapidated library textbooks. Our children are more fortunate. But along with the impressive choice came a sense of confusion. How do you know what is right for your child? We selected eight English textbooks for children and divided them into two categories: manuals for elementary school students (6-9years) and for teenagers (10-15 years).

Content:

  • 1. The general structure of English textbooks for children
  • 2. Textbooks for children aged 6-9
  • 3. Textbooks for children aged 10-15

Modern textbooks are significantly different from their predecessors. Education in them is based on exciting exercises, visual illustrations and game tasks. The authors of the manuals develop characters that students like. These can be children, animals, or even mythical heroes with whom the child would like to associate himself. The authors lead their characters throughout the textbook, talking about the daily life of the characters and the adventures that happen to them.

Modern aids not only teach children English, but also help them develop in general. In these textbooks, the child will find many creative tasks: make a postcard, compose a song and others. Teenagers are offered individual, pair and group projects.

With regular classes, children will reach the Intermediate level before graduation.

The general structure of English textbooks for children

  • The main textbook for children aged 6-9 is usually called Pupil's Book or Class Book. Benefits for children aged 10-15 are called Student's Books. They are illustrated texts with tasks. At the end of the textbooks are given lists of new words (Word Lists) and explanations of grammar (Grammar Reference). Some publishers offer culture clips.
  • In the Activity Book, the student completes tasks from sections: draws, colors images, writes words, composes essays and solves tests.
  • The Teacher's Book contains lesson tips, correct answers to test questions, transcripts of audio recordings and additional materials for learning by units: stories, songs, games.
  • All textbooks are sold with CDs containing listening materials. Some textbooks are accompanied by DVDs with video files.

Textbooks for children 6-9 years old

It is believed that 6-7 years old is the best age to start learning English. The child already goes to school, gets used to a regular schedule and a continuous learning process. He has hobbies, so it is easier to interest and motivate him than a kid who still goes to kindergarten. Let's see what benefits will help the child at this stage.

1. Incredible English

Publisher: Oxford University Press
Author: Sarah Phillips, Peter Redpath, Mary Slattery, Michaela Morgan, Kirstie Grainger

Incredible English is structured so that children learn English while doing what they love: listening to stories, making crafts, acting out skits and sang songs.

One of the authors of this guide, Sarah Phillips, is an expert in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). CLIL is a program in which children study school subjects in English. Each Incredible English unit is a tool for learning other school subjects. Watch the video where Sarah talks about her approach.

The publisher has published six editions of aids for A1-A2 students aged 6 to 11 years.

Structure

The Class Book consists of 9 units, each of which is devoted to a specific topic: school play, picnic, toys, farm. The unit is divided into several short lessons, which allows you to conveniently break classes and carefully work out all the skills. The exercises consist of colorful illustrations, short texts and short audio recordings. Examples of exercises: Listen and Find (you need to study the image, listen to the speaker and find the indicated objects, animals or people in the picture), Listen and Say (you need to repeat the words after the speaker), Listen and Sing (you need to repeat the lines from the song). To dilute the educational process, children are offered creative tasks, for example, to make a frame for a picture. You can consolidate the studied material in a playful way (Revision block).
