How nice it is,
to raise a young daughter!
(remembering Griboedov's poems)
Girl Zhenechka
It just so happened that Yulia gave birth to her beloved daughter in the penultimate year of medical school. It happened just before the start of the course. After spending only two weeks with Zhenya, the happy mother returned to her studies.
A newborn girl lived with her parents in the apartment of her grandparents on her mother's side. Their house was in the small town of Mekhzavod, located not far from Samara.
A student was doing an internship at a large hospital located on the far outskirts of the city. Therefore, she ran away neither light nor dawn, but returned closer to night.
Zhenya rarely saw her. When a young parent took her daughter in her arms, she immediately burst into tears. In order for the girl to remember her mother better, Yulia began to bring her small gifts: candy or a toy.
All adult relatives of little Zhenya: dad named Sasha, grandparents and three aunts Yulia worked in different places. They were not at home from morning until late at night.
For the first few months, they took turns taking days off and stayed close to the baby. Fortunately, the girly dad has accumulated several unused vacations at work. He was by her side more than all the others put together.
To the delight of everyone around, Zhenechka turned out to have a wonderful character. She cried little, asked for a potty out of need and fell asleep well. Moreover, before falling asleep, she closed her eyes and smiled slightly at someone unknown.
She woke up surprisingly quickly and simply, and never at that moment was capricious. The girl rubbed her swollen eyelids with her hands, but a smile was already appearing on her face.
More than six months have passed since Zhenya was born. During this short time, the girl began to roll over on her tummy from the back, and then learned to sit.
The girl sat perfectly on the hands of adults. Sitting in a chair, dad often took his daughter under the armpits and lifted her over his knees. The girl was happy and waved her legs in the air, as if learning to walk.
One such evening, relatives were sitting on a comfortable sofa in a large common room. Dad held the girl in front of him so that she got used to being in an upright position.
Suddenly Zhenechka's look became extremely meaningful. She looked at her dad carefully, and babbled in an unknown language. After saying a few sentences, she just as suddenly fell silent.
The strangest thing is that before that, and some time later, she was just babbling, like all small children. What the girl wanted to say to her beloved dad, no one could guess.
Knowledge of the world
After the birth of their daughter, dad and Yulia agreed with each other and with other relatives about one important thing. They unanimously decided that if one of the adults forbids something to the child, then everyone else is silent.
If someone does not agree with such a decision, then it can be discussed later. But, only in the absence of a girl. No need to give her the opportunity to play on the contradictions between native people.
As soon as Zhenya learned to sit, she began to study everything around. And, I started doing it in the most natural way. She immediately pulled everything to her mouth. To rid her daughter of a bad habit, my mother acted quite simply.
Bought a new plastic toy, covered it with a weak solution of mustard and placed it next to the child. She grabbed an unknown object and first tried it with her tongue.
Naturally, the girl did not like the taste at all. She grimaced heavily, twitched her shoulders and began to spit. Julia repeated this process several times. After that, exploration with the help of the mouth went out of fashion for the child.
Meanwhile, it was necessary to move on. Once, Zhenechka was playing on a wide sofa. Beside her was her beloved mother. The daughter looked at the hairstyle of the parent and became interested in her long curls.
The daughter raised her right hand and grabbed her mother's lush mane with her whole hand. Julia did not begin to explain to the silly child that it was impossible to do this. Instead, she took a section of her little daughter's hair and pulled lightly.
For a while, two women sat in silence across from each other. They intensely looked into each other's eyes, and each dragged to her. Finally, the daughter learned that pulling someone's hair hurts her.
She unclenched her thin fingers and felt relieved that her mother did the same as she did. After such a lesson, Zhenechka never grabbed anyone by the hair.
Sometimes dad looked with surprise as elderly and, it would seem, quite smart women of older middle age, were touched by incomprehensible things. For example, they smiled broadly when their grandchildren hit them in the face with a fist.
Seeing all this, Sasha thought with chagrin: “I wonder what the old woman will do when the child is sixteen and he hits her in the face like crazy?” Surely he will start to wail: - “And who did he grow up to be like that?”
Yulia had the same way of thinking about this matter. Therefore, as soon as Zhenya hit her in the face for the first time, she did not say anything. She immediately raised her right hand and lightly slapped her fingers on her daughter's cheek.
She looked at her mother in surprise, but she never threatened adults anymore. And, as far as dad knew, she didn’t do something similar with the children either. She well understood that you can immediately get a worthy rebuff.
Photos of my daughter
Time was flying fast. Zhenechka became more and more sensible. She could not understand the meaning of the words of those around her. But very sensitively caught their intonation.
If, for example, a girl was scolded in an affectionate tone, she smiled broadly in response. If they remembered pleasant things, but still frowned, then the girl was drawn to tears.
Zhenechka still didn't know how to speak, but somehow she really wanted to communicate with adults. You need to convey your thoughts and feelings to them. After observing her relatives, she learned to perfectly copy the facial expressions of ordinary people.
And she did it with incredible success. No wonder they said in the theater that the best actors in the world are small children, as well as animals. They have a strict mind does not prevail over feelings.
Muscle movements on Zhenechka's face were good, they expressed the state of mind of the child. In her face, as if in a small mirror, any emotions were reflected: excitement, joy, sadness or fear.
For a long time, the baby's father was alone with her. Noticing how Zhenechka clearly reacts to the world around him, he took a smartphone and began to take pictures of her often. There were short series of feelings, one after another.
Here is a child sitting on the couch and trying very hard to open the case of a film camera. Finally, the box gave up, but it was empty. Concentration and great interest were replaced by a disappointed look.
Then, a neighbor rattled a perforator. The little girl looked at her father in dismay. She saw that he was not worried, immediately calmed down, and then smiled broadly at her parent.
A second later, everything happened again. The daughter folded her lips in a circle and pointed with her finger at the wall, from where the noise was heard. Like, pay attention to this disgrace. And what, does it itch there?
Particularly impressive was the episode where Zhenechka ate jam. At first, she calmly sat on a small chair at a small coffee table. In her hand, like a scepter, a tablespoon was firmly clamped.
Then, an open half-liter jar of fragrant berries appeared in front of the girl. Here Zhenechka's face expressed incredible joy. The next few frames spoke of the anticipation with which the girl took out jam from the jar and with what pleasure she ate it.
The final picture clearly showed what happened to Zhenya after some time. The girl ate so much that she was irresistibly drawn to sleep.
The eyes were half closed. His face is almost up to his ears smeared with sweet syrup. The spoon with the berry was still moving towards her mouth, but to open it wide, the baby no longer had the strength left. It seemed, in a second, she was sleeping to fall to the floor.
Pot
For the long holidays, Zhenechka and his parents came to visit their dear grandmother on the father's side. Sasha was peeling potatoes for dinner in the kitchen. Mom wrote another essay for passing the test at the medical institute.
Lyubov Fedorovna has recently returned from work. She, along with her granddaughter, lay in her room on a soft sofa. Grandma was watching a small TV. There was a series about the hard life of prostitutes. Zhenechka was rummaging around in a box in which a great many buttons were kept.
All buttons were of various styles, sizes and colours. Almost a year old girl was very fond of messing with them. She could shift them from place to place for hours.
When my daughter could not sit, she began to cry softly if she suddenly had the urge to go to the toilet. Then, she began to make characteristic sounds, like groaning. They told their relatives that the baby should be put on the potty as soon as possible.
And now Zhenechka announced to grandma that she needed to go to the toilet. While an elderly, very plump woman got up from the sofa. While, she found old slippers and put them on her swollen feet, some time passed. The girl could not resist and piled into pantyhose.
- Well, what are you Zhenechka. - Lyubov Fedorovna said with a sigh: - Let's go wash your ass and wash dirty things.
The child's mother heard these words. Yulia rushed to her grandmother's room and began to shame her one-year-old daughter: - Why didn't Zhenya ask for your potty?
My daughter could not speak yet, but she already understood a lot. Especially the accusatory tone with which her mother spoke to her. The little girl shrugged her shoulders and looked down guiltily.
- He asked. I just didn't have time to put her down. - the old grandmother stood up for her beloved granddaughter.
The dissatisfied mother took her daughter in her arms and went to wash her in the bathroom. Five minutes later, Yulia brought a clean and dressed Zhenya, gave her to her grandmother and was about to return to her studies.
Lyubov Fedorovna took the baby, kissed her on her plump cheek, and said to the frowning Yulia: “It happens to everyone. One day, your husband and I went to visit my old mother in the village by train. He was probably the same age as Zhenechka. He still couldn't speak.
As soon as Shurik entered our compartment, he climbed onto the bottom bunk. While I was fiddling with things, he began to press all the buttons of a miniature remote control built into the wall of the car.
The son turned on and off the TV, lights and air conditioning. A conductor walked by. She immediately noticed what the boy was doing and ordered him to stop being outrageous. The child saw a strict girl in uniform and immediately obeyed. The remote all the way no longer touched.
Three hours later, we went with him to the dining car. Shurik walked along the corridor and held on to the walls. The squad shook violently. The vestibule door began to close and hit her son on the fingers. I'm glad I didn't cut my skin or break anything. From severe pain, he roared in three streams. Slightly reassured him.
It took almost two days to get to my mother. In the evening I went to the toilet. Shurik remained in the compartment with our fellow traveler. A short man in his forties agreed to sit with him for about five minutes. He was reclining on the bottom shelf, with his head to the window, and reading some book.
I return and see such a picture with horror. Apparently, Shurik also wanted to relieve himself. He looked around, but did not see the pot. I didn't take it with me.
Then the son noticed the neighbor's hat lying at the man's feet. A fellow traveler recently went for a smoke. Returning back, he did not hang it on a hook, but threw it on a shelf near the door. Like, soon you will have to go again, raise a smoke.
Shurik took off his tights, put his hat on the floor of the compartment and squatted down over it. When he finished his business, he took his "pot", went up to the man and put it right under his nose. Like, you need to flush everything down the toilet. My son always did this at home.
The fellow traveler jumped up and grabbed his son's waste hat. When I returned, I saw what he was holding in front of him. Realizing what happened, I offered to pay the person for the thing that Shurik spoiled.
- It's okay. I myself have two adult children. Everything happened to me. The man replied calmly. He left the compartment and, with a hat in his hands, moved to the end of the corridor, where there was a toilet.
He returned five minutes later with a clean-washed hat made of fine felt. It dried quickly and, fortunately for a fellow traveler, did not change shape from moisture. I then sniffed it imperceptibly. There is also no scent left in it.
Nursery
Zhenechka has grown a little. She learned to crawl quickly on all fours. After that, she got up on still unsteady legs and began to walk. True, she constantly held on to furniture and walls.
By this time, vacations and days off for all relatives have ended successfully. No one else could sit with the girl at home. Therefore, everyone unanimously decided that it was necessary to give the girl into professional hands.
Fortunately, my mother's grandmother worked as the head of a nursery. This institution was located next to the house where the young family lived. Iraida Vasilievna took her beloved granddaughter, took her to her work and placed her in the younger group.
At first, Zhenechka was afraid of a new unfamiliar place and did not want to leave the old woman. Then, she saw that there were many children of her age and a bunch of bright toys lying in a small fence in the corner.
The girl calmed down a little and went to the teacher without tears or tantrums. In the early days, the grandmother visited the girl every hour. Thanks to her golden character, Zhenechka quickly got used to the group and made friends with the children.
After some time, the grandmother came home from work with her granddaughter and told her family the following story: – Imagine, today, in the nursery, as always, they were going to have dinner. The teacher told the children about this and ordered them to sit down at a low table. When everyone settled in, it became clear that all the children were in place, but Zhenya was not.
The woman looked around the room, went into the corridor and found no one there. The girl disappeared without a trace. The teacher left the young partner to watch the children, and she herself ran around all the rooms.
It turned out that Zhenechka was sitting in the pantry on a pile of soiled towels and sheets. In her hands she had a plate and a spoon from a set for dolls. The girl pretended to eat from a bowl.
She must have realized that it was about to be dinner. She took the dishes and went to the side where the smells of food were coming from. The door to the kitchen was closed. She sat down in the nearest pantry and, so to speak, began to eat.
A dank autumn has come. It was surprisingly cold on the streets and in the houses. I had to wrap the baby in a lot of clothes. Otherwise, she could get sick.
On one of these cloudy days, Iraida Vasilievna returned home with her granddaughter. This time, the grandmother told a different story: - Today, the teacher rushed to the kitchen for breakfast. She enters their room with boats and what did she meet there?
All children lie on the floor one after another in a long chain. They were like bones in a game of dominoes. The teacher and her partner had never seen such a thing. They were frightened, and rushed to me, to the head of our nursery. They tell me so, they say, and so. What should we do now? Maybe the kids are all sick? Need to call the doctors?
I laughed back, “Don't worry, it's just that there are thick pipes running under your room. Boiling water flows through them from the nearest boiler room. Finally turned on the heat today. The guys immediately felt that the floor warmed up a little, and lay down on it. After all, they, like cats, are very sensitive to the cold.
Word Impossible!
Like all other children, having learned to walk, Zhenechka continued to explore the world around her with great interest. She climbed with playful hands wherever she wanted. All the words of mom and dad flew past her tiny ears. However, this was not surprising. After all, she was just over twelve months old.
Trying to save their daughter from injuries, father and mother began to teach her the most important word - NO! Parents well understood that after some time, she would decide for herself what she was still LIKE, and what was categorically not. However, at the first stage, she needed to firmly grasp that there IS such a concept in her life!
It was the middle of a harsh winter. The heating batteries in the apartment worked at full capacity. They heated up to a very strong degree. With his hand on the radiator, Dad could barely endure three or four seconds. In his captious eye, the temperature approached seventy degrees.
Meanwhile, Zhenya without hesitation grabbed cups full of tea and plates of steaming soup. So the parents thought that they should start with these dangerous items. And what good, will spill boiling water on itself and scald.
Yulia called her beloved daughter to her place. Smiling broadly, Zhenechka ran to the sofa on which her beautiful mother was sitting. The question was clearly read on the cute little face of the girl: - What are we going to play with you?
Mother took the child's thin finger. She put a pink pillow to the heated cast iron of the battery and clearly said: - HOT!
The daughter immediately pulled back the handle and looked at her father in surprise. He took her small hand. He said the word: - NO! - added to him: - HOT! - and tried to repeat the exercise done by his beloved wife.
But it wasn't there. The daughter escaped from his weak embrace and rushed to her mother with a squeal. Julia began to calm her roaring daughter. At the same time, she repeated the magic word several more times.
That was quite enough. As soon as Zhenya pointed to some object and said: - HOT! – as she immediately stepped back.
A day later, Yulia noticed a torn seam on her clothes. Mom immediately decided that it needed to be sewn up. She took a box of sewing supplies and settled herself on a wide sofa.
Zhenechka immediately stopped doing her own business. She ran to the seat and climbed into it. She moved closer to the open box and reached for what was inside.
By this time Yulia was holding a small needle in her hands. She grasped the sharp object with her knuckles so tightly that only a tiny tip was left sticking out.
Just in case, Yulia licked the cold steel. As everyone knows, saliva is a natural antibiotic. Therefore, at any age of life, people drag a cut finger to their mouth.
Having completed the preparation, the wife took the hand of the smiling Zhenechka. Yulia touched her slender finger with a needle and uttered the word: - PURCH!
The daughter felt a slight pain and pulled the handle sharply. She looked with great apprehension at the box lying next to her and moved away from it half a meter. Since then, she has not touched the objects about which she was told: - INJURE!
The unpleasant sensations experienced by the little girl were strongly tied to the understanding: – IMPOSSIBLE! – so she firmly learned what it meant. After that, to this word, Zhenechka reacted surprisingly clearly.
Moving to another apartment
Zhenechka's mother, Yulia, has moved to her last year of medical school. Now she often had to visit the center of old Samara. Dad worked near this place. Getting there from the town of Mekhzavod was surprisingly long and difficult, with one or even two transfers.
Because of this, the young family packed up their belongings and moved to another apartment. They settled with Lyubov Fedorovna, the grandmother on the father's side. There lived a woman not far from the shopping center with the strange name "Shvernik".
Zhenechka got used to it very quickly. She found a fly swatter somewhere and, holding it like a scepter, ran around the two cramped rooms. Lyubov Fyodorovna took this unpleasant thing from the child. And so that the granddaughter would not cry, she gave her a small car from her father's collection.
The girl began to roll the toy on the floor. The wheels immediately fell off. With great regret, the baby left a broken expensive model. Dad saw that it could not be repaired and was very upset. Noticing Sasha's mood, the girl also frowned.
Mother gave her daughter a pendant on a chain. There was some small gadget in it, and the numbers of the electronic clock were also brightly glowing. The girl pressed all the buttons and looked at the flashing letters and symbols. Then she began to drag the shiny object behind her, like a car on a thin rope. By evening, he had disappeared without a trace.
My grandmother's apartment was quite small. Therefore, they decided not to take a crib for Zhenechka with them. Dad took four chairs, put them facing each other and tied them with a rope, in the form of a square. After that, he placed that structure, near the wall, between the wardrobe and the bunk.
The result is a playpen of decent size. From there, Zhenechka could only move onto the pillows of her parents lying in bed. On Sundays, she got up before mom and dad, got up on her legs and climbed right on their heads. Like it or not, you will quickly wake up from sleep.
After moving to a new place, the girl suddenly began to worry. In the middle of the night she wept loudly. Mom jumped up and rushed to her own child. Yulia rummaged through the mattress in the dark and, to her shock, did not find her beloved daughter.
- Sasha. Zhenya is gone. she screamed.
Papa got up, heard a plaintive cry, and thought in surprise: – How could she disappear somewhere? After all, the voice is heard clearly and clearly. Maybe she crawled out of the crib onto the floor?
Turning on the night light, the man saw only Zhenechka's hands and head sticking out in the corner of a small arena. The whole body of the child fell into a narrow gap. The girl stood on the floor, her feet immediately froze, so she burst into tears.
Most likely due to illness, Zhenechka turned violently in her bed and pushed the backs of all the chairs with her feet. The mattress moved to the side. The rope loosened, the chairs parted a little. There was a narrow gap between them. A restlessly sleeping child fell into it.
Taking the daughter under the armpit, the father took the little girl out and put her on the big bed. While mom was calming her beloved daughter, he pulled the rope as tight as possible and brought the playpen into full order. Mom arranged for her daughter in her former place. The little girl immediately fell asleep.
The rest of the night passed quite calmly. But in the morning, there was a big problem. It turned out that the girl had a fever. I had to urgently call a doctor. Mom went to school. Dad called work, took the day at his own expense and stayed with his daughter.
About thirty minutes later, a beautiful young woman in medical clothes arrived. She examined Zhenechka, who was ill, and gave her some kind of injection in her right arm. The girl cried a little, but surprisingly soon began to feel much better.
Sasha received a week's sick leave and stayed at home with his child. Every day the doctor came and repeated the unpleasant procedure of treatment. As soon as Zhenya saw the lady in a white coat, she began to sob and, with tears in her eyes, rushed to her beloved dad.
He held his daughter close to him, stroked her back and head, and did his best to calm her down. After the injection of drugs under the skin, he had to start all over again.
Like all little children, Zhenechka had to be fed by the clock. Neither young parents nor other relatives ever begged the girl: - Eat a spoon for dad, for mom, for grandparents.
The girl herself ate as much as she wanted. If she was full, then the food was no longer swallowed. Zhenechka only opened her small mouth. All the porridge immediately poured out.
My daughter still couldn't speak, but nevertheless, she decided to make an experiment on her dear father. She was sitting on Sasha's arms. He fed her with a spoon. Zhenechka swallowed some of her usual infant formula. After that, she suddenly became stubborn and did not swallow delicious porridge.
Dad put a spoonful of food into his daughter's mouth and repeated it several times. Everything is useless. Liquid food did not enter the baby's stomach, but simply poured onto her bib.
Dad did not dance to the tune of the child and persuade the girl. He said: - If you don't want to eat porridge, leave the table.
He wiped the girl's chin, lifted her from her knees and carried her into the room. Putting Zhenya on the floor, Sasha returned to the kitchen and began to prepare breakfast for himself.
– Hunger is not an aunt, she won’t feed you pancakes. says folk wisdom.
Thirty seconds later, an embarrassed daughter entered the room. Dad did not swear at Zhenechka. He put her on his lap and began to feed her. Now the girl ate with great appetite.
A magical story of a little girl. Chapter 1. Forest children. — Literary club "Paper Elephant"
Once Nastenka went with her father and mother to a sanatorium. She recently turned five years old, and she was an unusual girl, because she saw and heard things that adults do not see or hear. Perhaps others also see and hear, but she has not yet met such. The children with whom she played in the yard only laughed at her when she told them about the talking flower. Mom and dad are another matter, but whether they believed her or not, she did not know. Probably not. But it's so simple. The flower often talked to her, especially when her mother forgot to water it, he whispered to her: “Nastya, water me, my roots are drying up, and the leaves have drooped. ” And she watered the flower with pleasure, saying: “Drink my little one, bloom and don’t throw leaves.” The flower came to life, straightened up, its leaves rang straight and everyone strove to touch Nastenka, which made her laugh merrily, as if from a tickle.
The flower kept saying something all the time: either about how warm the sun is, or about what the wind that flew in through the half-open window told. The wind knows many interesting stories because it happens everywhere. Nastya often heard the wind enthusiastically telling the flower about forest spirits, about magical unknown worlds, but she understood little and asked the flower to retell these stories to her. She sat down on a chair near the window sill where the flower stood and listened with enthusiasm. From these stories, she learned that there is a fairy-tale world somewhere. Only no one sees him. The only way to enter this world is in the forest. But no one knows how.
– Why doesn't anyone know? Nastenka once asked a flower.
“Because people don't believe in fairy tales,” answered the flower.
– But I believe and want to find this magical world!
– All right, if you are in the forest, ask the birches, they know everything.
And from that day on, Nastenka, at every opportunity, asked her mother to show her the forest. Mom denied that we didn’t have a forest nearby, but there was a park, but Nastenka didn’t notice anything unusual there, the trees were silent, and the wind only rustled. And finally, my mother promised her that when summer comes and dad has a vacation, we will all go to a sanatorium together, and there is a very large forest. And Nastenka began to count the days until her father's vacation.
And now she and her father and mother are going to a sanatorium.
— Mom, do birches grow in the forest? she asked her mother.
— Well, of course, daughter, there are many other trees, especially there are many pines. The air from them is healing and therefore there is a sanatorium.
— That's great, I need to talk to the birch trees.
— What to talk about, Nastenka?
— So about the magical world, mother, they all know birches. So our flower told me.
Mom listened to her and smiled. Nastenka understood that her mother did not believe her. “Well, okay,” she thought, “I’ll find a magical world, and my mother will believe me.”
The forest turned out to be almost the same as their city park, but much larger. Near the buildings, he was with beautiful alleys, and a small cozy lake, where her father and mother took her for a walk, on the very first day. Mom and dad sat on a bench on the shore near the water, and she was allowed to walk nearby on the lawn. A birch grove grew nearby, as dad called it, because only birch trees grew there, and there were many of them.
— Mom, can I play with the birches?
“Only at the edge of the forest, so that we can see you,” Mom allowed, and Nastenka ran to the birch trees.
— Hello little white ones, will you talk to me? she asked, embracing the birch tree and pressing her cheek against it. And then the birch trees rustled with leaves, and she heard:
— And why not talk, girl. We are glad to see you.
Nastenka was confused at first, but quickly got used to it, and began to tell them about how she likes it in the sanatorium.
“Who are you talking to?” she heard her mother's voice.
— With birches, mother, they are so good!
— What kind of fantasies does a child have? Mom turned to Dad.
- It's just a game, first with dolls, then with a flower, and now talking to trees. You won’t have time to look back, how she will grow up and all this will pass, ”papa answered, without looking up from the newspaper. Nastenka heard their conversation, and only sighed sadly, and immediately switched to birch trees. And the birches told her about the forest and about the fact that forest children appear in the forest on a full moon - Poterchata.
— And why only at night and why the full moon? - Nastenka was in a hurry to find out.
— Because they live in a magical world, and the full moon lures them into our forest to play. They are curious and always come. Nastenka really wanted to get to know them. The birches told her:
- Today is a full moon, and if you want to see forest children, then come this night to the old lake. The wind will show the way.
That evening she could not fall asleep for a long time, she recalled her conversation with the birch trees. And at night she was awakened by a whisper:
— Nastenka, get up, new friends are waiting for you.
Nastenka opened her eyes and saw no one. Moonlight illuminated the room and only the wind ruffled the window glass with a slight rattle and in it she guessed the words. I got out of bed and went to the window, it was as bright as day outside, the full moon surrounded by stars filled the sky.
“Come out, Nastenka, they are waiting for you,” the wind whispered through the window again.
Nastenka remembered the conversation with the birches and their invitation to come to the lake at night. She immediately asked them why at night, at this time, the children need to sleep. But they answered that only at night the children of the forest wake up and come out of the surrounding swamps to the old lake, and if she wants to play with them, then only at night. And Nastenka really wanted to and therefore immediately agreed. And now she made up her mind and quietly walked through the room where dad and mom were sleeping, carefully turned the latch in the door and went out into the corridor. It was light there and she easily found her way to the lobby where the aunt on duty was sleeping sweetly, laying her head on her hands folded on the table and freely approached the front door. The night is hot and she was opened to the cool night air, and the girl slipped easily out into the street.
The forest was frighteningly noisy all around: screaming, wheezing, howling somewhere, but all this was blocked by the deafening ringing of cicadas. This forest met her warily and with apprehension. Nastenka suddenly became afraid. And suddenly, behind my back:
“Nastenka, the birches sent me to lead you to the lake, where the forest children will meet you,” she suddenly heard a whisper. Nastenka looked around - no one, and only a warm wind suddenly blew in her back.
“Well, Nastenka, don’t be scared, it’s me, the wind, let’s go, I’ll show you the way,” and he whirled along the path like a whirlwind. The voice of the wind reassured her, because he was her old acquaintance, and she, guessing his outlines, ran after him. And the trees whispered around: look, the wind is leading the girl to the lake to Poterchaty. And Nastenka had already turned after the wind from the alley onto a barely noticeable path in the thicket of the forest where the light of the moon did not fall. At first dark, it suddenly flared up with hundreds of lights.
“These are fireflies, they were sent by Poterchata,” the wind whispered, and she ran further, along a bright living corridor. But here the path ended at the edge of a large swamp lake.
The forest silence was broken by the loud croaking of frogs in the reeds near the shore, and somewhere nearby in the thicket, something angrily hooted and groaned.
— Don't be afraid, girl, it's the eagle owls who are angry, everything is always wrong for them. They saw you and they are indignant, - the wind calmed her.
In front of Nastenka there was a lake, overgrown with reeds and quagmire near the shore and with a huge bald patch of water in the middle, from which a path of clear water stretched to the shore. The wind stirred the reeds and whispered to Nastenka:
- Wait a minute. The forest children are on their way and will be here soon.
“I ran away without permission,” Nastenka hurried to confess to the wind.
— Don't worry, you'll be back before your mom and dad wake up. And now you will have fun with us, be patient a little more. Lost already near, I hear their voices.
- Lost? The birch trees told me that they were forest children, and they live in a magical world. And who are their mothers?
- Their mother is Mermaid and she loves them. So, do you want to play with them?
— Yes, of course I do. Will they come soon?
- Yes, - the wind answered, - they are already on the lake. Wait. And while I'm flying, I'll shake the reeds.
And he swirled the fallen leaves in a whirlwind, rose above the lake and strewed the water surface with them.
Nastenka was fascinated watching how the leaves sway between the sky strewn with stars and the same sky in the depths of the lake. The bright, full moon moved to the very bottom and the lake was like an inverted sky, just as dark and homeless. How interestingly Nastenka thought, so maybe there at the bottom of the lake there is a magical world that the wind told about. She sat down on a stone near the shore, laid her face on her hands and watched with interest how the leaves floated between the sky and the sky of the magical world in the lake. “ Or maybe someone from this world looks at our sky and thinks, where do their stars disappear to? And I already know that they move to us, and during the day they go back home to their world at the bottom of the lake. ” - Nastenka thought and did not immediately notice how a boy approached her along the water path.
He was walking straight on the water and his steps made circles as if from a thrown pebble. He was small, maybe half as tall as Nastenka, and looked at her with wide, unblinking eyes, reminiscent of dark plums. He had sand-colored hair and a dark grass jumpsuit, and his bare feet were raking in the water.
- Hello girl. The birch trees say that you hear and see us, and you want to get to know us, what is your name? I’m Wheat,” he blurted out in one breath. And he got ashore next to Nastya.
- Oh, how small you are. I'm Nastenka. And how old are you?
I don't know. And why should I? I'm fine as it is. Do you want to ride the wave with us?
— What kind of wave? - Nastenka was surprised, - I don’t even know how to swim, and it’s night now.
— Why swim? We are riding a wave, now the wind will shake the reeds, and the wave will go, don’t yawn here, jump and slide like a hill, the boy was in a hurry to tell. He took her by the hand and said:
- We asked the Waterman, and he told the water to hold you, and you would not drown. Well, shall we go? Wheat held her hand tightly and walked towards the water. Nastenka cautiously followed, and then she made up her mind and shouted:
- Let's run!
- And they ran out into the water. Indeed, the water became like an air mattress and held her, but just in case, she squeezed Wheat's small hand tighter. They quickly ran to a large watery patch in the middle of the lake and saw dozens of little forest children running, tumbling and laughing loudly in the moonlight.
These are my brothers and sisters, Poterchata. They want to see you - said Pshenichka and shouted to the children:
- Here we are! I brought the girl Nastenka, she sees us and hears us, and wants to ride the wave with us.
And at the same moment the forest children ran towards them from all sides. In one minute they surrounded them and looked at Nastenka with interest.
“Do you really see us?” the smallest one turned to her.
Yes, I see and hear. And what is your name?
- I, the Kid. The smallest and I can’t stay on the wave, she runs away, ”he said sadly. Nastya squatted down and, looking into his eyes, confessed:
— I have never ridden a wave either, but if we are together, the wave will not run away from us. Really, Wheat?
“Okay, Baby, give your hand and hold on tight, the wave will come soon,” Wheat agreed. Nastya also took a small hand. And the three of them began to wait for the wave. Lost with cries: “Wave, wave-on!” They ran to the sides and prepared to catch the wave. Wheat took a deep breath and shouted into the sky:
- Wind, drive the wave, we are waiting !!!
And immediately they began to make a noise, reed thickets near the shore swayed, and now the first wave is rushing towards them.
“Hold Baby tighter, Nastenka, the wave is already close, and as soon as it lifts us, we must immediately descend from the hill, and she will catch up and carry us to the far shore,” Pshenichka hurried. Nastya looked at the approaching wave, and saw how forest children jumped on it. Everything was simple, jump and roll, and the wave itself will pick it up. Wheat carried them away:
- Don't stand still, you need to run away from her, she will catch up and pick you up.
Nastenka ran tightly squeezing Malysh's hand, on the other hand Pshenichka held him, and Malysh kicked through the air without having time to touch the surface of the water. They ran very fast. Nastenka's heart was beating loudly, but she was not afraid, it was fun. And then the water suddenly rose under them, as if a huge hippopotamus had surfaced, they were thrown into the air and, falling, they slid along the surface of the wave, overtaking it, but the wave did not lag behind and tried to slip forward under them, but they rolled down and outstripped it, and rushed to the far shore.
The wind was blowing in the face, the stars were rushing towards them, Nastenka was filled with delight. She was shouting something and tightly squeezing the Kid's hand. They seemed to be flying in the night sky over the lake. Here the wave weakened, slipped under them and rushed off into the reeds, and then the second wave was already approaching, and behind it the third wave was also losing its riders. Forest children with loud laughter jumped to their feet and ran along the reeds back for another wave. At the same time, they made noise and funny somersaults.
Nastenka with Malysh and Pshenichka also ran with them, when suddenly a tremor ran through the water so strong that she and Malysh fell down, but caring Pshenichka helped them up. Although he was small in stature, he turned out to be very strong and easily lifted them.
“That old Kikimora woke up again, she probably smelled you, she doesn't like people,” he turned to Nastenka. But Nastenka did not hear him, she looked frightened at the huge monster rising from the quagmire on the edge of the swamp. In the light of the bright moon, the monster's eyes sparkled menacingly and scoured the lake in search of a victim. She had very long legs and arms and was as tall as the tallest pine tree in the forest. With an unpleasant champ, she walked towards them through the bog, and from her steps the mud flew in fountains in different directions. The forest children rushed into the reeds, shouting merrily among themselves.
“Let's run,” Pshenichka grabbed Nastenka by the arm and dragged her into the reeds. The kid rushed ahead, ahead of them by how many steps. In the reeds, they squatted down so that Kikimora would not see.
- Kikimora smelled you. She didn't like that you were with us. She doesn't like people. But don't be afraid, Vodyanoy is for you, and she is afraid of him. It was she who only decided to scare you so that you would be frightened and not come here again. The spanking of Kikimora's footsteps was receding. And the forest children were already discussing the news.
— What about the magical world? - Nastenka thought to herself, - the birches said that you live in this world. And I want to get into it.
Pshenichka smiled enigmatically and put his finger to his lips:
— Not now, Nastenka, it's a big secret. Do not rush. We've only just become friends. Yes, and the morning is coming soon and it's time for you, until mom and dad woke up.
- Call the Auks, kids! he turned to the victims. And turning to Nastenka, he continued, “the dawn is visible behind the forest, it’s already morning. Auki will take you home.
At that time, she saw vague shadows swirling above them.
“Who is this?” Wheat asked.
- These are our friends Auki, they will take you home.
— How will they carry me? I'm so big, and you can't even see them at all.
— Don't worry, Auki, whoever you want will be carried. The wind helps them.
And Nastenka felt how an invisible stream picked her up, lifted her over the swamp, described a circle above the water. Forest children said goodbye to her, waved their hands. And she heard: “Come to us again, girl-ah.
