You think the real estate market is treacherous today, try England in the late 1530s. That's what the nursery rhyme "Little Jack Horner" is really all about.

ELLIOTT: Here to explain is our London librarian Chris Roberts. He's the author of "Heavy Words Lightly Thrown: The Reason Behind the Rhyme," and he's at our London bureau.

Mr. CHRIS ROBERTS (Author, "Heavy Words Lightly Thrown"): Hello. Hi, Debbie.

ELLIOTT: So who was Little Jack Horner?

Mr. ROBERTS: Little Jack Horner was actually Thomas Horner. The name Jack comes up in nursery rhymes a lot, usually to reflect a slightly knavish character, a bit of a ne'er-do-well. So I suspect that's why they changed his name to Jack from Thomas.

(Reading) `Little Jack Horner sat in a corner eating his Christmas pie. He stuck in a thumb and pulled out a plum and said, "What a good boy am I."'

Where to begin with this? This is talking about the dissolution of the monasteries, Henry VIII taking property from the Catholic Church. Jack, as we know, is actually called Thomas Horner. Now he was a steward to the Abbot of Glastonbury during the reign of Henry VIII. This is how the story goes: He was entrusted to take some title deeds of properties to Henry VIII as a bribe so the abbot could keep the main monastery, but was prepared to give away some of the lesser properties.

Now the title deeds were held and sealed in a pie, and Jack's off to London. But instead of delivering the bribe to Henry VIII, he helps himself to the pie, puts his hand in, pulls out a plum piece of real estate--in this case, a place called Mells Manor--and thinks he's very clever for doing this. That's one version of it, that Jack is a thief and he's stealing the bribe that's intended for the king. And he...

ELLIOTT: So was this common? Is there historical evidence to support the theory that bribes were often delivered in pies?

Mr. ROBERTS: It comes up bewilderingly often in nursery rhyme. And it's--I think the pie is used as a metaphor. I think it's not necessarily what we would think of as a pie. It's just referring to a means of concealing a document, concealing anything. It could be jewels in some cases. Now the Horner family, who incidentally lived in Mells Manor until the 20th century, are quite outraged at this slander of their ancestor and understandably so.

And there are actually two rhymes that mention Mr. Horner. The first one that mentions him is: `Hopton(ph), Horner, Smith and Finn, when the abbots went out, they came in.' And a much more likely reading of what happened is that Thomas Horner, along with the other people mentioned in the previous rhyme--Hopton and Smith and Finn--were up-and-coming gentry. They were Protestant, they were local merchants doing quite well for themselves in the area around Glastonbury, and that they bought the property. You could see it as an early example of gentrification. They bought the property at the time admittedly at a knockdown rate, and admittedly the land had been stolen from the Catholic Church by Henry VIII. This seems to be what happened after the dissolution of the monasteries. The king didn't keep all the land for himself; he distributed it amongst his supporters so he then could rely on their loyalty should anything occur in the future, should there be a rebellion in the future. I suspect, though I can't prove this, that the popular `Little Jack Horner sat in a corner, eating his Christmas pie' version is actually the Catholic take on proceedings there.

Short nursery rhymes for children

Often as parents we end up looking for short nursery rhymes for our children. Sometimes I need short nursery rhymes to pair with the activity. Other times, I need short nursery rhymes to avoid playing long videos to my child and limit their video and screen time.

Nursery rhymes are a great way to teach early phonetic skills (the ability to hear, identify and manipulate letter sounds). If a parent wants to start teaching rhymes to their child, it is always wise to start with shorter rhymes (with more repetition of rhyming words) for the three reasons listed below. nine0037

Children have short attention spans

Babies typically have a very short attention span of 1 to 3 minutes. So, although the main purpose of rhyme for a child is to have fun by listening and watching, parents today are also driven by the hope that this will also trigger an understanding of phonetics and help in the development of language.

Long delay

Shorter format nursery rhymes with higher rhyming frequency make it easier for toddlers to focus and appreciate the essence of rhyming words and phonetics, which in turn makes rhymes fun to listen to and watch. Also, in terms of developing toddlers' language skills, rhymes are the best way for kids to practice pitch, volume, and understanding the rhythms of a language.

Simple repetition

Short nursery rhymes also help the child remember and read them. This, in turn, makes the child more confident as he/she gets appreciation from the caregivers. This gratitude will make children return to rhymes again and again. Some parents also prefer to sing the rhymes out loud in sync with the volume of the device, which also encourages the child to memorize and repeat. Often rhymes become one of the first sentences of a child. nine0037

English speaking countries seem to have the same process with ip dip doo (en) , "Eeny, meeny, miny, moe" and "coconut crack", in Spanish-speaking countries with plom plom plom and with "e-niki", beniki" among Russians.

Description

"Plouf-plouf" (or " pouf-pouf " , or "ploum-ploum" , etc.) Allows you to select a player by removing all others in succession. One of the participants plays the role of leader. All children stand in a circle, often squatting with one foot in the center so that the toes of the shoes touch. nine0037

Leader starts by ploughing pointing to the center of the circle twice in a row and saying "plouf-plouf".

Then he sings the rhyme, pointing successively to all the children in the circle for each measure of the rhyme. The last assigned child is removed and the process starts again with the remaining members.

Bets

The leader plays a central role as he can influence the outcome by changing the rhyme he uses. Some rhymes are also well known for the many twists and turns they can include. nine0037

Without a melody

• Eenie Meenie
• One, two, three, four, potatoes, my cow's legs hurt, let's pull her tail, she will be much better. Optional addition: Kazi, kaza, that's not you. Completion option : ... in a day or two; blue White Red. (In Quebec)
• Quebec also has the rhyme "Have you gone up the stairs yet?" ". We point the finger and change people on each syllable. The last item gives the answer "yes". Let's start again with the sentence: "What color was it?" ". The last dot gives the name of the color. Depending on the answer, we write the name of the color and continue the count with the sentence: “Do you have this color on?” ". The victim answers "yes" or "no", and we end with the words "Bang, bang, poof! You understand everything!". We can lengthen the rhyme with:

Description

Children are in a circle, their arms are extended to the center, all hands are folded. The leader sings the rhyme, and at the end the players raise or lower their hands: those on the side where there are fewer of them leave, and the remaining participants start again. nine0037

This formula no longer works when there are only two players: we end up choosing with the blue-white-red method : the group secretly chooses a color (blue, white or red) and the two remaining players must guess. Whoever finds it wins.

A possibility is that the other player, commonly referred to as the "white hand", replays "to decide" without being eliminated again.

Bets

Players with hands in the middle have more chances to tip the scales one way or the other. nine0037

Description

This method separates two children. they take up a vertical position, face to face, at a certain distance. Then they move towards each other, placing one foot in front of the other, the heel touches the toe, and in turn pronounce the words "cabbage" and "flower". When two players are close enough, the tip of one's foot crushes the other's foot: he wins. nine0037

Variations allow you to cross your foot (to make it shorter) or tiptoe.
