A group of my friends started doing something we are calling Toddler Time and each week we choose a letter to focus on. I realized that finding objects that start with the letter of the week can be a challenge and I thought it might be helpful to have a long list of “M” letter objects them on hand. If I’ve missed something drop me a note in the comments, I would be thrilled to add even more letter “M” objects.

Wanting to expand your kids vocabulary or do some alphabet activities for you kids, but need some inspiration? Here are a few things you can do with the items that start with M list!

Letter M Object Find – Put a collection of miscellaneous items in the middle of the room. Next have your kids find and retrieve only the items that begin with the letter M. (This activity would be great for preschoolers and kindergarten aged students.)

Words starting with the letter "M", Library of Articles for Artists

MANERISM (ital. Maniera - artistic handwriting) - A trend in European art of the 16th century, whose representatives sought to express the subjective "inner idea" of the artistic image that was born in the artist's soul. The works of the Mannerists are distinguished by the sharpness of artistic solutions, the tension of the images, and the mannered sophistication of the form. Manierismo

MARINISM - By the end of the first half of the 19th century, another trend emerged within the framework of the Russian romantic landscape - marinism. The founder of this genre in Russian painting was Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky. In the 19th century, the sea element attracted artists from many countries. In marine species, the tradition of romanticism lived the longest.
Aivazovsky's own pictorial style takes shape already by the 40s of the 19th century. He deviates from the strict classical rules for painting, skillfully uses the experience of Maxim Vorobyov, Claude Lorrain and creates colorful paintings that skillfully convey various effects of water and foam, warm golden tones of the coast.
In several large paintings - "The Ninth Wave", "Black Sea", "Among the Waves" - majestic images of the sea are created using the theme of a shipwreck, typical of a romantic painting.
Aivazovsky influenced Russian landscape painters, primarily Alexei Petrovich Bogolyubov. But Bogolyubov, who once started out as an imitator of Aivazovsky, in the late 60s was already critical of the famous master. In his notes, excerpts from which are given in the work of Yagodovskaya, he wrote: “Although he (Aivazovsky) and I pursued the same direction, he never bothered me, because I was always a naturalist, and he was an idealist - I always wrote sketches, without which the painting of a picture would be unthinkable for me, he also stated in print that it was nonsense and that one should write with an impression, looking at nature.
Bogolyubov was known as a "Russian Frenchman", he mastered the techniques of plein air painting. His painting, in which a bridge was thrown between the Russian and French landscapes, remained little known, and Aivazovsky's art, which is more in line with the people's need for spectacular, impressive pictures of nature, is still very popular. Thus, in the first quarter of the 19th century, the romantic direction of landscape painting actively developed, freeing itself from the features of the speculative "heroic landscape" of classicism, painted in the studio and burdened with a load of purely cognitive tasks and historical associations. Landscape in this period is understood as a portrait of the area. OIL - oil (oil paint) consists of a pigment that creates color and a binder - usually linseed oil. The oil has the advantage that it dries slowly, and therefore allows you to make corrections. Oil paint is applied with a brush or palette knife, usually on canvas.

OIL PAINTING - A kind of painting technique based on: - the use of vegetable oil as the main binder; and also - on certain methods of working with paints. It is believed: - that oil painting is characterized by special opportunities for direct expression of the author's intention, mood, internal impulses; - that oil painting allows you to create rich and subtle color options, the illusion of space and volume on a plane.

Palette Knife - A tool for applying paints on canvas and working with them along with brushes, there is a technique for working with a knife - pasty paint application.

CHALK - For drawing, factory-made chalk pencils are used, but pieces of chalk are also used. Lump chalk, being a natural product, often contains impurities that scratch the paper. To avoid this, it is pounded, turned into dough with water and molded into pencils, without any binder. Chalk is well fixed with adhesive fixatives.

MEZZO-TINTO , or black manner - In this technique, an engraving was first made in 1642. Numerous recesses are applied to the board with a special tool - a "rocking chair" so that it acquires a uniform roughness, and when printed, a thick, velvety tone is obtained. The drawing on the board prepared in this way is smoothed out and polished with a “trowel”, and the more the board is smoothed, the weaker the paint adheres to it, and in the print these places turn out to be lighter. Mezzotint gives about 200 impressions.

MINIATURE - (French Miniature, Italian Miniatura; from Latin Minium - cinnabar, red lead). In the visual arts: a colored or one-color drawing made on the pages of a handwritten book for the purpose of illustrating text and decoration. In the history of art, miniature played at times a significant role (Western European Middle Ages, Byzantium, India, Iran, Central Asia, Azerbaijan). In ancient Rus', book miniatures have been known for a long time. Until the end of the 14th century, it was performed on parchment, mainly with egg paints.

MULTILAYER PAINTING - A kind of oil painting that requires the division of work into a number of successive stages: underpainting, writing, glazing. These stages are separated by breaks for complete drying of the paint. Multi-layer painting uses the transparency of oil painting: - for optical enrichment and complication of color; - Achievement of effects of depth and variety of color.

MODEL - (French Modele; from Latin Modulus - measure; pronounced - "model"). In the practice of fine arts: a person who poses for an artist while performing a work (including a study and a sketch). In a figurative sense, the word "model" is sometimes called any creatures and objects that served the artist as nature.

MODERNISM - The general name of the trends in art and literature of the late 19th-20th century. In Byzantine art, mosaics of exceptional power (in the Church of San Vitale in Ravenna, around 547; in the Church of the Assumption in Daphne, 2nd half of the 11th century) occupied a dominant position in the system of pictorial decoration of churches. The art of mosaics also flourished in countries that adopted and developed Byzantine traditions: in Italy, Georgia, and Ancient Rus'. In the Romanesque art of Western Europe, ornaments prevailed. SOFT VARNISH - The technique originated in the 18th century. The board is varnished with a strong addition of lard. Rough paper is placed on it and a drawing is applied, then the paper is removed along with adhering pieces of varnish, exposing the surface of the board. After etching and printing, the print reproduces the texture of the paper.
