Construction Songs, Poems, & Fingerplays

Can You Hammer A Nail?

(Sung to the tune of: "Do Your Ears Hang Low?")

Can you hammer a nail?
Can you saw a piece of wood?
Are you handy with a wrench?
Can you use it like you should?
The construction worker can
Use these tools in different ways
Each and every day.

In Tune With Tools

(Sung to the tune of: "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes")

Help the children make up a motion that corresponds to each tool.
Have the children perform each tools motion as they sing its name.
Sing the song slowly as everyone gets the hang of it, then increase the tempo.

Saw, hammer, tape measure, tape measure.
Saw, hammer, tape measure, tape measure.
Pliers, paintbrush, and screwdriver.
Saw, hammer, tape measure, tape measure.

Construction Vehicles

The backhoe digs a big, big hole.
The dump truck hauls the dirt.
The grader scrapes the ground so smooth.
While all the workers work.

Johnny's Hammers

Verse One: (Make hammering motion with one fists)

Johnny had one hammer, one hammer, one hammer
Johnny had one hammer then he had Two

Verse Two: (Make hammering motion with both fists)

Johnny had two hammers, two hammers, two hammers,
Johnny had two hammers then he had Three.

Verse Three: (Make motion with both fists and one leg.)

Johnny had three hammers, three hammers, three hammers,
Johnny had three hammers then he had Four

Verse Four: (Make motion with both fists and both legs)

Johnny had four hammers, four hammers, four hammers,
Johnny had four hammers then he had Five

Verse Five: (Make motion with both fists and both legs and head. )

Johnny had five hammers, five hammers, five hammers
Johnny had five hammers, then he went to sleep (lay hands like sleeping

Construction Worker Song

This is the way we pound our nails,
pound our nails, pound our nails,
This is the way we pound our nails, so early in the morning.
This is the way we saw our wood,
Saw our wood, saw our wood.
This is the way we saw our wood, so early in the morning.
This is the way we use a screwdriver,
use a screwdriver, use a screwdriver,
This is the way we use a screwdriver, so early in the morning.
This is the way we drill a hole,
drill a hole, drill a hole,
This is the way we drill a hole, so early in the morning.

Additional  Verses:
Saw The Wood
Turn the Screw
Stack the Bricks
Paint the walls
Stir the paint

Hammers, Pliers, Saws, and Screws

(Sung to the tune of: "Pop Goes the Weasel")

Hammers, Pliers, Saws, and Screws
Nails and bolts and ladders
Who uses all these different tools?
The construction worker!

Cement Mixer Chant

Do the actions indicated in the first two lines.
On the last two lines roll one hand over the other.

Cement mixer comes
(pretend to drive truck)

Cement mixer comes
With a rumble, rumble, rumble rub
Rumble, rumble, rub

Shovel in the sand
(pretend to shovel)
Shovel in the sand
With a rumble, rumble rumble, rub
Rumber, rumber, rumber, rub

Add the cement
(pretend to carry heavy bags)
Add the cement
With a rumble, rumble, rumble, rub
Rumble, rumble, rub

Mix water in
(stir)
Mix water in
With a rumble, rumble, rumble, rub
Rumble, rumble, rub

Keep the mixer turning
(roll hands one over the other faster)
Keep the mixer turning
Keep the mixer turning
Or the concrete will get hard
(Freeze in place)

Dump Truck Song

(Sung to the tune of "One little, two little, etc)

Bumpity - bumpity comes the dump truck
Bumpity - bumpity comes the dump truck
Bumpity - bumpity comes the dump truck
Duuuuuuuuuuump out the load

I've got oranges in my dump truck
I've got oranges in my dump truck
I've got oranges in my dump truck
Duuuuuuuuuuump out the load

I've got boxes in my dump truck
I've got boxes in my dump truck
I've got boxes in my dump truck
Duuuuuuuuuuump out the load

I've got garbage in my dump truck
I've got garbage in my dump truck
I've got garbage in my dump truck
Duuuuuuuuuuump out the load

See the Dump Truck

(Sung to the tune of: "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star")

See the dump truck going slow,
It must have a great big load,
Full of dirt or maybe rocks,
Working hard, it never stops.
See the dump truck going slow,
It must have a great big load,

Did You Ever See A Worker?

Did you ever see a builder, a builder , a builder
Did you ever see a builder saw this way and that?
Saw this way and that way, saw this way and that way
Did you ever see a builder saw this way and that
Did you ever see a painter A painter A painter
Did you ever see a painter brush this way and that
Brush this way and that way brush this way and that way
Did you ever see a painter brush this way and that

My Little House

(Sung to the tune of: "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star")

I'm going to build a little house
With windows wide and bright.
With chimney tall and curling smoke
Rising out of sight.
In winter when the snowflakes fall
Or when I hear a storm,
I'll go and sit inside my house
Where I'll be snug and warm.

Three Little Pigs

(Sung to the tune of: "Three Blind Mice")

Three little pigs,
three little pigs,
Each built a house,
each built a house.
The wolf came by and he huffed and puffed.
The straw and stick houses were not so tough.
Thank goodness, the brick house was strong enough
For three little pigs!

Who Built a House?"

(Sung to the tune of: "Mary Had A  Little Lamb")

Who built a house
That was made of straw,
Made of straw, made of straw?
Who built a house
That was made of straw?
The first Little Pig, That's who.

Who built a house
That was made of sticks,
Made of sticks, made of sticks?
Who built a house
That was made of sticks?
The second Little Pig, That's who.

Who built a house
That was made of bricks,
Made of bricks, made of bricks?
Who built a house
That was made of bricks?
The third Little Pig, That's who.

Scoop And Dump

(Sung to the tune of: "Skip to My Lou")

Scoop! goes ditch digger in the dirt
(bend low, raise arms up high)
Scoop goes ditch digger in the dirt
Scoop goes ditch digger in the dirt
Scoop up all the dirt

Reach up so high with the crane
(Cup hand, hold up high)
Reach up so high with the crane
Reach up so high with the crane
Hold the dirt up high

Dump the dirt into the truck
(reach high, drop hand to knees)
Dump the dirt into the truck
Dump the dirt into the truck
Haul it all away

Shovel And Dump Truck

(Note: This fingerplay is especially designed to help correct speech  defects.
The combinations, cr, mp, rt, sc, sh, sl, st, sw, th, tr, wa and wo are given)

Scoop, scoop, scoop
The big shovel digs the dirt.
(Make a scooping motion with right hand, palm down; make fist)

Then it swings around
And empties the dirt and stones
Into a red dump truck
(Swing right arm from extreme right towards left. Hold right
fist above open left hand. Open fist to "empty the shovel.")

Crash! bang! Thud!
The dirt falls into the truck.
(repeat scooping, swinging & dumping.)

Now the dump truck is full
Away it goes down the road.
(Move left hand, palm up, away from yourself.)

Good-bye truck.
Come back for another load.

The Steam Shovel

Since children today see steam shovels in action at construction sites, this finger play
will add to their concepts of the steam shovel. This example  fits into the category of occupations.
If possible, visit a construction project and have the children watch a steam shovel in action.

Here is the steam shovel, (Right forearm erect, hand drooping).

And here is the ground. (Two arms enclose area).

See the great boom (Right elbow stationary, forearm moving side to side).

Swing round and round.

It dips, it bites, (Forearm dips, thumb and fingers in grasping motion).

It lifts, it throws. (Forearm lifts, thumb and fingers spin).

My, how the hole

In the ground grows! (Two hands enclose circle).

Dipping, scooping,

Lifting, throwing.

See how the hill (Forearms with hands meeting).

Beside it is growing.

Build Me A House (Old House)

Old house, tear it down.
Who's going to help me tear it down?
Bring me a hammer, tear it down.
Bring me a saw, tear it down.
The next thing you bring me, tear it down.
Is a wrecking machine, tear it down.
New house, build it up.
Who's gonna help me build it up?
Bring me a hammer, build it up.
Bring me a saw, build it up.
The next thing you bring me, build it up.
Is a carpenter man, build it up.
The next thing you bring me, build it up.
Is a carpenter man, build it up.

Carpenter

This is the way he saws the wood
(making saw motion)
Sawing, sawing, sawing.

This is the way he nails the nail
(making hammering motion)
Nailing, nailing, nailing.

This is the way he paints the house
(making a brushing motion)
Painting, painting, painting.

Hammer And Saw

'Pound, pound, pound'
Says the little hammer.
Pound the nails in tight.
'Saw, saw, saw'
Says the little saw.
Saw, saw, saw,
Saw the board just right.

Construction Worker

By sawing and nailing and drilling,
A construction worker can make quite a lot
A home or a barn or an office
We're glad for the talent he's got!

Cranes

Cranes reach up,
(reach up)
Cranes reach down,
(reach down),
Cranes reach out,
(reach straight out),
And all around.
(turn around).

This Is the Way We Build A House

(Sung to the tune of: "Mulberry Bush")

This is the way we (measure) the board,
(Measure) the board, (measure) the board.
This is the way we (measure) the board,
When we build a house.

Sing additional verses, replacing the underlined
word, in turn, with saw, sand, hammer, and paint.

I Want To Be A Carpenter

I want to be a carpenter and work the whole day long.
I'll use a great big box of tools; my arms are very strong
First, I'll saw and saw and saw, and cut the boards in two
Little boards and big boards-all kinds of boards will do.
I'll plane and plane and plane the boards for everyone is rough.
Back and forth I'll plane the boards until they're smooth enough.
I'll measure them and measure them - each one down to a T
And then I'll start to build a house for me up in a tree!

British Navy soldiers use the songs of American pop diva Britney Spears against Somali pirates. It is reported by "Interfax".

The military has discovered that sailors on the east coast of Africa cannot stand the sound of Western music. Fighters against pirates broadcast popular melodies at loud power.

"As soon as the pirates hear the sounds of Britney, they leave as quickly as possible," the officers say. The most successful Somalis scare the singer's hits "Oops! I Did It Again" and "...Baby One More Time".

The leader of the Brothers Grim band about modern music, the new album and his dreams

On July 3, the Brothers Grim band performed at the STAR FEST festival in Central Park. For many, it is associated only with zero, when the hits "Eyelashes", "Kusturitsa", "Breath" tore all kinds of charts. Over the years, only Konstantin Burdaev, one of the founding brothers of the group, remained from the original composition. The team is actively recording new material. The Brothers Grim recently released a new single "Fly High", which has a nice homage to the legendary Norwegian band A-ha.

The performance featured both time-tested hits and a new composition. It is worth noting that the audience accepted “Fly High” with great interest. Not only did the group delight Krasnoyarsk residents with songs, between compositions Konstantin in a bright Hawaiian shirt actively talked with Krasnoyarsk residents about the weather, the mighty cold Yenisei and even about the local football team. The "brothers" turned out to be a bright soulful concert, which from the first to the last song was saturated with the feeling of summer and the lightness of being.

Before the Gornovosti concert, we talked to the band leader Konstantin Burdaev.

- In zero years, the band's songs sounded from every iron. Does the burden of past glory bother you now? Doesn't it bother you to perform "Kusturica" and "Eyelashes" at every concert?

- Yes, there are songs in the band's piggy bank that are now popular hits. As well as many different excellent compositions that came out after the well-known songs. For example, some of ours play on major network radio stations, and some listeners are pleasantly surprised to find out that these are the songs of the Brothers Grim band. As for the loud popularity in the past, I don’t reflect on this at all. Our group still leads an active creative life. The new album of the Brothers Grim will be released this fall.

– What will the new seventh album be about?

- As Alla Pugacheva once said: "I don't talk about my songs, I sing them." The new album will have to be listened to, and everyone will have to understand what it is about. It turned out to be subconscious and poetic. Each listener may have their own associations. In songwriting, the main thing is to hit the “ego of a person” point, and then the song will definitely become a hit. The main thing is that the listener loves himself in the songs.

- The other day the team released a new song "Fly High". Is there a hit in the "human ego" in this composition?

– People determine everything. The need for a song and its popularity are determined not in one season or in a month. She's been nurturing for years. The Brothers Grim group has many songs that were not hits at one time, but eventually became popularly loved. Songs live in different ways, and only ten years later you can say for sure whether the composition took place or not. I can definitely say that the song must pass the test of time. You can pump a lot of money into promotion, and the song will become a big hit for one season, and then it will be safely forgotten.

– You write music, lyrics, arrangements yourself. How do you draw inspiration and lure your muse?

- It's hard to say, because inspiration sometimes comes suddenly, like a volcanic eruption. If I knew how to artificially inspire inspiration, then I would already be living in a penthouse in Miami. Illumination can come suddenly and in the most ordinary places, for example, when I cross the road.

– Konstantin, which of the latest music releases did you like? What would you advise your fans to listen to and which bands should you pay attention to?

- If I single out from those who I liked lately, then this is the Dabro group. They have strong hits that listeners love. The group consists of two brothers and somehow reminds me of the modern version of the Factor-2 team and even the Brothers Grim. Let the guys continue to delight with their excellent songs, I want them to succeed.

– Why do you think rap now rules the ball in music trends, and romantic rock music is not in favor now?

– I have a theory that Russia is not a musical country, but more of a poetic one. In our country, a poet is more than just a poet. For example, Robert Rozhdestvensky and Yevgeny Yevtushenko, the same sixties poets, gathered full halls, even stadiums according to current standards. And now, in our time, a kind of new format of poetry in the form of rap is flourishing. The quality of this poetry often leaves much to be desired, and one can cry bitter tears from the quality. Of course, I can't take it as music. I believe that this is a trend of some momentary fashion. When I listen to music, my imagination turns on, but here the imagination does not turn on at all. Rap consists of ready-made thought forms, and this is convenient for the average ordinary consumer. I hope that this will come to naught, as already sick of the abundance of such primitive music.

– Is it easier for a musician to realize his creativity now?

– Of course! Now everyone can sit down at their computer and start making any rap. These guys don't even call music an arrangement, because they call themselves beatmakers. They just make a beat and start mumbling something from above.

In our time, in order to be allowed to the studio, you had to be something musical. It was impossible to create a composition at home. Technologies have now stepped far forward, and at home you can “pick up” something from some place, immediately put it on the network, and you are already a successful star. At the dawn of the Brothers Grim team, everything was much more complicated. It was necessary to assemble a talented team, make an arrangement, record it all, sing with high quality. By the way, you don't have to sing in rap. You can just mumble some kind of collapsible nonsense - and it's in the bag. This is how “rain-nail” and “love-carrot” are born. Everything! Success is guaranteed!

– What do you dream about? Play on a certain stage, gather a large venue or make a popular song?

- I don't like to pull God's beard with dreams. I have some desires, then I keep them in myself for a while, and then I try to realize them. We all have little anticipations, for example, a long-awaited vacation, when you can spend more time with your family or go to the sea. Our life is made up of such small anticipations. You have to live in moments like this. And big dreams sometimes look like ordinary fantasies, as in childhood, but there is also real life, about which they crumble into dust. Therefore, I live and rejoice in the realization of my little anticipations.

– What are you proud of? Were there concerts and performances that you consider the most important and useful?

We travel a lot and have performed even in those regions where people serve. The Brothers Grim group performed in Syria and the Donbass.
