Spiraea - "Little Red Riding Hood".

Care, cultivation, reproduction. Types, varieties. Photo - Botanichka

Previously, spireas were called meadowsweet, this name is still found in some reference books, which leads to some confusion. Now only herbaceous plants are commonly called meadowsweet, and shrubs, that is, plants with perennial woody branches, are called spireas. "Spirea" in Greek - "curving" (from the same root the word "spiral"), which indicates the nature of the growth of shoots of many plants of this genus.

The genus Spiraea ( Spiraea ), the pink family, is good for its diversity. There are both very low and high, up to more than two meters, shrubs. They also differ greatly in terms of flowering: some species bloom already in the second half of May, in others, flowering begins in the second half of June, in others - in July and lasts until autumn, even slight frosts do not interfere with them. Spiraea flowers are either white or pink with varying intensity of color in corymbose, cone-shaped or pyramidal inflorescences. The leaves, branches, and even the whole appearance of spireas of different species are so different from each other that sometimes a doubt arises: do such dissimilar plants really belong to the same genus?

In addition to species, there are many varietal spireas that are remarkable for both flowering and unusual leaf color. There are only about 90 types of spirea, I'm not talking about varieties. It is impossible to tell about everyone, so I will describe only those with whom, as they say, I personally know.

Japanese Spiraea (Spiraea japonica) reaches a height of 1-1.5 m, its stems are pubescent at first, later the pubescence disappears, and the stems become shiny, reddish-brown. The leaves are oblong-ovate with serrated edges, reddish-brown growing, becoming dark green on top and duller on the reverse side when ripe. In autumn, the color of the leaves changes to yellow-orange or burgundy.

This spirea begins to bloom at the end of June, blooms very abundantly throughout July, then by September the flowering gradually fades. The flowers are pink, in flat inflorescences located at the ends of the branches, with a somewhat convex center.

Japanese spirea propagates very easily, cuttings root almost 100% even without root formation stimulants. Usually, to maintain a decorative look, I cut off the faded inflorescences, but if some of the inflorescences that bloomed first are left, then the seeds will ripen in October. Seed germination is quite high.

There are many varieties of Japanese spirea, I only grow two of them: Little Princess - dwarf, with small green foliage and bright pink flowers, and Little Yellow Princess - looks like the previous variety, but in spring it has leaves pure lemon, in the summer they become light green.

Spiraea nipponica is a dense shrub with curved branches, up to 1 m high. It can also be formed in a creeping form. Its leaves are small, dark green, and do not change color in autumn. The flowers are white, in small dense inflorescences, abundantly covering all branches from bottom to top in June. This species can grow not only in a sunny place, but also in partial shade. It is more thermophilic than the Japanese spirea, but covered with snow, it perfectly tolerates any frost, even as strong and prolonged as it was last winter. Nipponian spirea is not demanding on soil fertility; both sandy loam and loam are suitable for it.

Spiraea chamaedryfolia reaches a height of 2 m. Its shoots droop, which makes the bush look like a beautiful thick fountain. Foliage is light green, turning light yellow in autumn. This spirea blooms earlier than others, immediately after the leaves open, starting from the second half of May. At this time, the entire bush is covered from top to bottom with hemispherical, white, rather large inflorescences. The plant prefers a bright place, but puts up with some shading. The soil loves fertile, does not tolerate stagnant water. The species is highly winter-hardy, but on my spirea, after the frosts of last winter, the branches that remained above the snow did not bloom as profusely as those located below. This spirea tolerates a summer haircut after flowering has ended.

Spiraea salicifolia is a tall shrub with straight branches. Its leaves are quite large, elongated (up to 10 × 4 cm), in autumn they become brownish-red. The plant blooms for a long time from the end of June. The flowers are pink or light pink, in narrow elongated inflorescences 12-15 cm long, located at the ends of the shoots. Winter hardiness of spirea willow is very high. The shrub is photophilous, prefers well-moistened soils. Slightly spreading due to root shoots.

Bumalda Spiraea (Spiraea ×bumalda) is a hybrid of Japanese and white-flowered spirea. Low, up to 70 cm shrub with small ovate-lanceolate leaves. The inflorescence is flat, coloring from white to dark pink. Flowering is long, from the second half of June.

Winter hardiness in Bumald's spirea in central Russia is good, provided that the plant is covered with snow before the onset of severe frosts. Young seedlings need to be covered for the first year or two for the winter, but under last year's deep snow, seedlings of two varieties planted in autumn overwintered without loss.

The varieties of this spirea are so beautiful that they deserve a separate description. Anthony Waterer - a dense low bush with narrow dark green leaves, in the "youth" they are pinkish. Raspberry flowers begin to bloom in June. Variety Gold Flame - low tender bush. Its leaves are golden-pinkish-orange in spring, turning yellow in summer, turning brownish-orange by autumn.

Spiraea ×vanhouttei - a hybrid of three-lobed and Cantonese spirea. A large, tall shrub with long, arcing branches covered with bluish-green leaves. It blooms from June, snow-white inflorescences cover the shoot from top to bottom. This light-loving spirea grows quickly, its winter hardiness in ordinary winters is quite good, although last winter the plant froze to the level of snow.

A little more about the reproduction of spirea. Plants can be propagated by seeds. In hybrids (Billard, Bumald, Vangutta spirea, dwarf, gray, sharp-toothed and all varieties), if viable seeds are formed, seedlings from them will be heterogeneous in character (which, of course, may also look interesting).

Seeds are best sown early in spring in boxes. After 2-3 months after germination, the seedlings dive into the garden. A young seedling is a single unbranched shoot up to 10 cm high with a tap root. To develop a powerful root system, the end of the main root must be pinched. Another 2-3 or even 4 years will be needed for seedlings to reach the time of flowering. All this time they require careful weeding, loosening the soil, frequent watering.

To preserve the variety, spirea must be propagated vegetatively: by cuttings or layering. Semi-woody shoots about 10 cm long are taken on cuttings, both apical and cut from the middle part of the shoots of the current year.

The cuttings are planted under a cover of film or non-woven material. You can place them tightly, but only so that the leaves do not touch. During rooting, watering is necessary at such a frequency that the soil remains moist at all times. We will also have to weed out and loosen the soil so that it does not compact and moss does not grow on the surface.

When cuttings are planted in early to mid-July, good roots have time to form by autumn. Almost all types and varieties of spirea can be rooted without root formation stimulants, but such stimulation will not interfere with cuttings of oak-leaved spirea. The simplest option is to dip the slightly moistened ends of the cuttings in Kornevin powder immediately before planting.

If you need to get a small number of new plants, then the most reliable way in this regard is reproduction by layering. In the spring, during the period of bud break, the branches growing along the periphery of the bush must be bent down and laid in shallow pits. Tie the ends of the branches to the pegs, giving them a vertical position. If the soil in the places where the branches are dug up does not dry out too often and for a long time in the summer, then by the fall or next spring the layers will heal on their own.

Willow spirea (Spiraea salicifolia). © Garten Reich

Vegetatively propagated plants bloom much faster than those grown from seeds. Summer-blooming spireas bloom next season, spring-blooming - a year or two later, since their flowers appear on last year's branches, which should be sufficiently developed. If the first buds in the life of a seedling are removed, then the development of the bush will go faster.

In our area, spirea grows along the paths, framing the beds with vegetables and brightening up some "official" garden crops. Spireas bloom almost continuously, thereby attracting pollinators (these shrubs are excellent honey plants), the dense foliage of spirea protects the beds from the winds.

To keep bush care to a minimum, I mulch the soil underneath with sawdust. But some spireas, especially yellow-leaved varieties, do not look very good against a light background of sawdust, so I found another way to cover the soil - with layers of green moss. Moss protects the soil from drying out and compaction after heavy rains or watering, weeds practically do not germinate through it, except that only sow thistle overcomes this barrier. I do not pull out its sprouted stems, but destroy them with Roundup. In some places, under layers of moss, I planted bulbs of early low tulips, woodlands, chionodox, for which such a coating is not an obstacle. Primroses enliven the garden and delight the soul, in spirea at this time the buds are just beginning to bloom and they do not shade the blooming bulbs.

I have never noticed any diseases or pests on spireas. With their unpretentiousness, charming flowering, and then the autumn color of the foliage, they fully met and even exceeded my expectations. Yes, I recently learned that spireas are phytoncidal plants, which means that they are not only beautiful, but also very useful.
