Same Street, Different World: Sesame Turns 40

It's almost perfect that the first African-American president of the United States was elected just in time for Sesame Street's 40th anniversary. The world is finally starting to look like the PBS show has always been.

So this awesome cultural landmark is the merit?? program that has taught generations of children to count and countless parents to teach, and is being run in 125 countries around the world ?? the anniversary of that Tuesday is not self-praise madness. Episode #4187 is as child-oriented and respectful of routine as any.

Image

Special guest ?? first lady Michelle Obama does not appear next to Big Bird until the middle of a show filled with the usual preschool didactics. Letter of the day comes first?? H, both in help and hugs and healthy.

The only real difference is that the audience must count to 40 on that day.

The pedagogy hasn't changed, but the look and tone of Sesame Street has. Forty years later, this is your mother's Sesame Street, only better dressed and well-appointed: Sesame Street across from Park Slope. The beginning is no longer a realistic depiction of the city skyline, but an animated candy-colored chalk drawing of preschool Arcadia with flowers, butterflies and stars. The iconic set of brownstone and trash cans has lost graffiti graffiti and gritty urban life over the years. Now there are green spaces, tofu and yoga.

It's still a messianic show, but the mission has shifted to the more immediate concerns of pediatricians and progressive parents, especially when it comes to childhood obesity. Sesame Street uses puppets, rhymes and visual enthusiasm that were designed to instill tolerance, racial pride and equality, and promote exercise and healthy eating.

In other words, Mrs. Obama's message on the anniversary episode is not a call to future soldiers, scientists and presidents to be all they can be, but to tiny consumers to eat the freshest food they can find. Vegetables taste so good when fresh from the garden, don't they? Mrs. Obama talks about a rainbow coalition of children gathered around a tray of soil, an echo of her White House vegetable garden. “If you eat all this healthy food, you will grow up big and strong,” Ms. Obama says, clenching her fists. Just like me.

This focus on foodies is a reflection of the times and current fads, but also the tensions in the Streets mandate Sesame" as it covers two public service imperatives in the broadest sense of the word? serving the underserved?? while at the same time competing with all other shows and satisfying the public television donor base.

It's an urban myth that Cookie Monster was turned into Veggie Monster to appease food eating Nazis, however?? it was a rumor in the blogosphere in the "Half-dead" whisper campaigns. But the taste of Cookie Monster was improved during Season 36 as part of the show's 'Healthy Habits for Life' campaign. He now also eats fruits and vegetables, which are labeled as food at any time in the series, while cookies are kept in reserve as food for the time being. And almost every episode has a subliminal message about exercise and nutrition, as well as a bowl of fruit.

This massive increase in carbohydrate awareness makes it even more ridiculous that McDonald's is a corporate sponsor "Sesame Street"?? perhaps the most obvious sign of a change in morals. It was a financially motivated decision made in 2003 after public television lifted restrictions on sponsors' advertising activities.

Sesame Street no longer has a monopoly on growing minds; anyway, it's an endangered species. There are many preschool shows now, and some of them are also shown without commercials, such as Playhouse Disney. It's no surprise that fewer kids are watching Sesame Street, but most kids are watching more TV than ever: A recent Nielsen study found that, on average, kids ages 2 to 5 now spend about 25 hours a week watching TV. , and another 7 hours either watching TV. taped shows and DVDs or sitting in front of a computer. According to Nielsen, the most popular show in this age group in September was Go, Diego, Go! on Nickelodeon. Sesame Street floated far behind.

Picture of

Sesame Street turned to family-oriented sponsors such as Beaches Resorts and Earth's Best organic baby food to help cover costs.

The inclusion of McDonald's, however, horrified some, including the non-profit group Commercial Alert, founded by Ralph Nader, who couldn't reconcile useful content with fast food ads and love it . It should be noted that, unlike many fast food commercials aimed at children, these commercials do not attract children by displaying a happy lunch or M&M McFlurry. Instead, they showcase a child doing an art project?? little boy outlines golden arches.

Picture of

Ironically, McDonald's introduced this distinctive trademark in 1969 when Sesame Street first aired on public television. It was a turbulent time. The non-profit production company Children's Television Workshop, now known as Sesame Workshop, was introduced to the public in 1968 when Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color mentioned multicolor cartoons rather than racing. The most popular series on television was The Andy Griffith Show.

By 1969, popular culture had changed: Rowan and Martin's Laughing Man was the No. 1 show in the country; Mod Squad was a hit, as was Julia, the first network series to feature an African-American actress in a non-stereotypical role. Sesame Street took its fresh magazine format and Laugh-In's "sock-to-me" comic book style, but its commitment to relevance, in the language of the times, matched the era's biggest social issues.

Picture of

The original purpose of the show was to provide children from poor families who did not have access to decent pre-schools with an exciting and engaging pre-school education, while adding variety to the children's programs. Sesame Street wasn't the only children's show with a social message. (Rocky and Bullwinkle are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. Some of the earliest cartoons, back when the show was still called Rocky and Friends, were way ahead of their time; a retelling of The Ugly Duckling from Shattered Tales 1962 years old. screed against cosmetic surgery.)

But it was the mix of whimsy, pop music, and didactic austerity that set Sesame Street apart from everything else. It may have had an even greater impact overseas, especially in places like Kosovo and South Africa, where the show is produced in partnership with local TV producers and with local interests in mind. Kami, the world's first HIV-positive doll, debuted in a South African version in 2002, when Thabo Mbeki's government was still questioning the value of antivirals.

Peace in the Middle East can be measured by the status of Sesame Street. For a time, in the more hopeful 1990s, there was an adaptation that jointly catered for Israeli and Palestinian preschoolers?? in Hebrew and Arabic. This consensus died during the first intifada, and now the Israelis have one version, the Palestinians have another.

Even in this country, the smallest innovations on Sesame Street sound like cultural markers. The addition in 2006 of Abby Cadabby, a pink and glittery fairy with a button nose and long lashes, was seen as another sign of the rise of third wave feminism?? or a concession to the commercial appeal of Disney princess paraphernalia. New technology abounds: this year, Abby's School of Flying Fairies will feature CGI for the first time.

The past episodes on the commemorative DVD in the box serve as a kind of time tunnel to lost eras: at 19In 71, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, handsome in an afro and with a gold medallion, encouraged young children to read "I am someone." In 1998, Tony Bennett serenaded a worm who yearned for space with Slimey to the Moon. Disco, rap and hip-hop had their 'Sesame Street' moment.

This season has the sensitivity of Om. My mom takes me to yoga classes, I love doing yoga,” said the little pigtailed girl in an October issue. She narrates a short film in which a pixie teacher and her students fold into a downward dog pose. After class, her mother comes with a plastic water bottle. She says that during training it is important to drink water, - the girl explains. When I grow up, I want to be a yoga teacher.

IBM and the creators of Sesame Street will help children learn better / Sudo Null IT News younger age is better to learn. No, children will not be forced to study additionally or engage in cramming. On the contrary, the new project will address the issue of improving preschool education. And not only in Russia, but all over the world.

The project is a three-year project and as part of a common agreement, IBM and SesameWorkshop will work to create tutorials and learning platforms that enable personalized learning. Why are preschoolers chosen? The point is the recommendation of experts who believe that the most active development of the brain occurs in the first five years of a child's life. This stage can be considered critical in terms of learning and development of children.

Sesame Street has been running for about 45 years. During this time, the company that creates the series has accumulated vast experience in the field of education. In particular, the experience is based on more than a thousand studies of the most optimal way to teach children. As for the Watson cognitive system, it has long been able to work with natural language and pattern recognition. The experience of both companies will help create personalized learning models that will help children learn more effectively than ever before. As a cognitive system, Watson will work to improve the educational activities it offers.

Examples of collaboration between IBM and SesameWorkshop include:
• Smart toys like Elmo that encourage children to learn while playing. The child during the game will receive information important for learning, and use it in the game process. The toys will adapt to the child's developmental level and interact appropriately with that level. If the child can already count to 20, Elmo will teach him to count to 30;
• Creation of learning applications that help the child to read and play using the child's own "language" with its own special words. Using the capabilities of the Watson cognitive system, the toy will learn the characteristics of the child's response and dynamically adapt;
• A school learning tool to help teachers personalize their students and plan activities that are appropriate for specific groups of children.

“We believe that bringing together education and cutting-edge technology is key to improving early childhood education in the US and around the world. As for the previous generation, Sesame Street used the ubiquitous presence of television to reach socially vulnerable children and give them access to some of the learning opportunities that only wealthy middle-class families had. And it worked very well. Today, through collaboration with IBM and Watson, we plan to develop a new generation of customized tutorials. Ultimately, our goal is to provide children from all socioeconomic backgrounds with the opportunity for meaningful and personalized learning during their formative years,” says Jeffrey D. Dunn, CEO of SesameWorkshop.

Recall that Sesame Street was founded in 1969. The goal that the creators of the show have set for themselves is to give all children the same educational opportunities ... Today, the show is popular with many families, but the ultimate goal remains the same, namely, addressing the educational needs of children through a powerful combination of media and the Muppets. Sesame Street, in addition to its own episodes, produces numerous outreach programs aimed at the world's most vulnerable communities.
