6 tips to help you type faster on your smartphone

May 5, 2021 Advice

Learn how to set up your gadget so that you can type without errors, even with one hand.

1. Set up auto-correction and predictive typing

The default text correction settings in Android and iOS already make typing easier, but you can make it even more efficient by reviewing all the settings and reconfiguring them for yourself.

On Android, go to Settings → Language & Input → Gboard → Text Correction. This section contains options for automatically correcting text as you type. Almost all of them are enabled by default, but some are more of a hindrance than a help. Review the list and leave only what you need. nine0003

iOS doesn't have many settings like this, but the system's typing behavior can still be tweaked a bit. Go to Settings → General → Keyboard and take a close look at the toggle labels. Not all of what is there is needed by most users. If predictive typing is only confusing, and auto-correction slows down typing, feel free to turn them off.

2. Use continuous typing

Android users can greatly speed up their printing speed by using continuous typing. It is enabled by default and allows you to enter words without lifting your finger from the keyboard. Spaces will be inserted automatically when you raise your finger. nine0003

This printing method also works on the iPhone. Only to use it, you have to install a third-party keyboard. But more on that below.

3. Define text abbreviations

Both Android and iOS can expand predefined abbreviations into words or even whole phrases. My favorite shortcut is "xzxz", which transforms into the classic ¯_(ツ)_/¯ emoji. In the same way, using two or three characters, you can enter email addresses, card numbers and other data that is long and difficult to type manually. nine0003

On Android, abbreviations are configured in Settings → Language & Input → Custom Dictionary. You need to click the "Add" button, enter a phrase and come up with an abbreviation for it.

On the iPhone, a similar menu is found in Settings → General → Keyboard → Text Replacement. To add a shortcut, click on the plus in the upper right corner and type in the text and its abbreviation.

4. Enable one-handed printing

Of course, typing with two hands is faster and more convenient, but they are not always free. It is difficult to even hold the phone with one hand, let alone type text. That is why they came up with a special mode in which the keyboard becomes a little smaller and moves to the edge of the screen. nine0003

To turn it on in Android, you need to hold your finger on the semicolon key, and then on the button with the hand holding the smartphone. The arrow at the edge of the screen allows you to slide the keyboard to the other side of the display, and the Expand icon returns to normal mode.

In iOS, one-handed typing is enabled by long pressing the globe button. The location of the keyboard relative to the edge of the screen is selected here.

5. Try a different keyboard

All mobile operating systems have been supporting alternative keyboards for a long time, so you should definitely install a few and try typing on them. nine0003

To attract the audience, third-party developers implement various features, among which there are many interesting ones. For example, handwriting, inserting gifs, stickers, and more.

Price: Free set too, right? In some situations, it is much easier to dictate a message than to hit the right keys, constantly getting lost. The system automatically recognizes the text, and you just have to click on the submit button. nine0003

The dictation function on the standard Android keyboard is activated by pressing the microphone button. If for some reason it is not there, you can add the option in the keyboard settings.

In iOS, the corresponding button looks and is enabled in the same way. On first use, you will be prompted to enable the dictation feature if it is not already enabled on the system.

Page borders may not display or print correctly in Word 2007

For the Microsoft Office Word 2003 and Microsoft Word 2002 versions of this article, see 291335.

For the Microsoft Word 2000 version of this article, see 189889.

For the Microsoft Word 97 version of this article, see 167874.

    Overview

Page borders in a Microsoft Office Word 2007 document cannot display or print as expected. This behavior occurs because the page may be in a non-printable area that is determined by the printer driver. This article contains four methods that you can use to work around this issue. nine0003

    Symptoms

When you view or print a Microsoft Office Word 2007 document in Preview mode, page boundaries in the document may not display or print correctly. Additionally, you may receive the following error message:

One or more fields lie outside the printable area of the page. Click the "Fix" button to increase the width of the relevant fields.

    nine0006 Cause

This issue occurs because the default page border is 24 points (about 0.31 inches) from the edge of the page. This is the default page boundary regardless of the actual non-printable area of the printer. Even though the margins of the document can fit within the printable area of the page, the page may be within the non-printable area that is determined by the printer driver.

This problem affects Hewlett-Packard (HP) DeskJet printers more than any other printers. The non-printing area of the HP DeskJet printer bottom is 0.67 inches or more. The specific setting depends on the DeskJet series printer driver. nine0003

    Workaround

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods to change the margin settings for the page border.

Method 1: Position of the page border relative to the outer edge of the page

    1. On tab Page layout in group Page background choose command Page Borders .

    2. On the tab Page , click the button Options .

    3. In the Borders and Shading Options dialog box, change the 24 points in the area of the default fields to a new dimension. For example, you can change the value for top , bottom , left and field options right up to 31 points.

Page margins affecting only between 0 points and 31 points. 31 measurement points equals approximately half an inch.

Method 2: Position of page border relative to page margins

To set the position inside the page edge of the border relative to the page margins, do the following:

    1. On the Page layout tab, in the Page background group, select the Page borders command.

    2. On the tab Page , click the button Options .

    3. In the list , click the button text .

      nine0088
    4. If necessary, change at least 10 points 24 points in area of field by default.

    5. Press button twice OK .

Depending on the default printer configured on your computer, you may need to change the bottom page margin settings 0.8" or higher. To do this, click field button in the Page Setup group and click Custom fields button . On tab of field , change bottom margin to 0.8" or higher.

Method 3: Position the border relative to the page margins, and then change the page margin settings

    1. On tab Page layout in the Page Setup group, select fields and click the Custom fields button.

    2. On the margin tab, increase the bottom margin to at least 0.67" , and then click OK .

Note Document formatting may change when margin settings are changed.

    3. nine0002 In the Page Background group, select Page Borders .

    4. On the tab Page , click the button Options .

    5. In the list click text and double-click the OK button .

Method 4: Resize custom paper size

    1. On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, select Size and click the Other Page Sizes button.

    2. On the Paper tab, change the setting to 10" in the field Height .

      Notes

      nine0088

    Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem with the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

    Additional information

Most printers cannot print to the edge of the paper due to physical limitations in the printer's paper handling mechanism.

If the margin value of the document is close to the edge of the paper and the printer cannot print close to the edge of the paper, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Word Viewer return a warning message every time a document is sent to the printer. Therefore, when printing multiple copies of a document, the error message will appear only once.
