Peanut Butter and Jelly: Reflections on Friendship

Peanut Butter and Jelly Together Make the Best Sandwiches.

Let me begin by saying that this blog has nothing to do with a PB & J; although just reading the title is making me a bit hungry.  (Does it come with chips and a chocolate milk?)  This blog is about something more satisfying.  Something tastier.  Something nourishing.  It’s about friendship.

My long-time friend Stark Howell, an acclaimed Animation Director and Storyboard Artist and I recently worked on a music video project for my songs, “Ride To Find The Cure” and “AIDS Free World,” both from my CIM Records CD, “Songs For An AIDS Free World.

So, why would I title this blog as I did?  Good question.  Stark and I have been friends since early 1976, our senior year in high school.  We both surfed.  We both had gas money to get to and from the beach from Burbank.  We both had blue eyes.  We were both shy.  We both had two brothers (although I had the three sister, too).  That’s about all we had in common then.   But it worked then as it still works today.
On a clear and sunny Saturday morning, we packed up our gear at Stark’s house in Valencia and began our drive north to the Cow Palace in Daly City, which is just south of San Francisco, for the kick-off if the AIDS Life Cycle/2012.  I completed the ride on bike from San Francisco to Los Angeles in 2007 and I must say, it is a long bike ride spanning seven days.  In 2007, I had also recorded and released a four song CD inspired by the previous AIDS Life Cycle events.  Now, Stark and I decided to film the videos, so we packed up my Scion Xb and headed north to the Bay Area.

The drive north was pleasant.  Through our hours of conversation, we enjoyed the coast from Ventura to Gaviota.  We were amazed with all of the vineyards planted in the Salinas Valley.  We ate Subway sandwiches in King City and saw the Artichoke Capital of the World.  We “inch-wormed” our way through the Santa Cruz traffic until we found ourselves at the old cemetery that would be the set for our first shoot.  We had a great time setting up the shots and getting the footage we needed in the naturally lit setting.

On Sunday we filmed the dedicated and courageous cyclists as they rode the first leg of the seven-day ride from Daly City to Santa Cruz.  We had a blast filming the riders as they worked their way to their destination.  After Santa Cruz, we filled sand bags in Sand City.  We lunched in Monterey.  We had dinner at this small but delicious taco stand in Santa Paula.  I dropped Stark off at his home and then drove the ninety-plus miles back to my home in Capistrano Beach.   What a weekend!  What fun!  What a friend

What a great friend!

Today, Stark and I are polar opposites in most aspects of our lives.  I’ve lost the gorgeous brown hair of my youth and I’m now bald.  His full head of thick, classic blond hair is still there, but now gray.  I choose to ride the waves knee boarding and he’s a soulful stand-up surfer.  I am a Democrat.  He is a Republican.  I am socially liberal and he is very conservative.  I am a questioning Roman Catholic.  He is an Evangelical Christian.  We both have two daughters but he also has four boys.  I live at the beach.  He lives inland.  My passion is surfing and music.  His is surfing and film.  It goes on and on.

So why is our friendship so strong?  Why has our friendship aged well over the years?  Why have we been able to adapt so well to each other, despite our contrary natures?

Why?  How?  The answer is simple.  Love.

It is amazing how love, even through a friendship like ours, can strengthen and grow over time.   I love Stark.  I love our history.  I love our future together as middle-aged men facing our sixties.  I love the way we still get excited about surfing good waves.  I love the way we both adore our wives and children.  I love the way we always seem to have different opinions about everything.  I love that we laugh at the same things.  I love the way we can complete each other’s thoughts.  But more than everything, I love the way we are the same – two surfers from Burbank.

In the movie “Forrest Gump,” Forrest describes his relationship with Jenny as the two of them being like “…peas and carrots.”

Stark and I?  Well, we are the peanut butter and jelly to this oh, so perfect sandwich.

So think about this…

·      Whom have you shared many years of friendship with?

·      What makes your friendship unique and special?

·      How have your differences, if any, worked to your advantage through your years of friendship?

Peace Always!

Chris

Crunchy vs. Creamy Peanut Butter: We Decided Which Is Actually Better

Crunchy vs. Creamy Peanut Butter is arguably one of the hottest food debates ever. The controversy is so serious that polls have been taken, Twitter is constantly showing opposing opinions, and I'm betting the friendship has gone sour (okay, maybe the last one is a bit dramatic). However, facts are facts: peanut butter is better than crunchy peanut butter, and the following six reasons prove it.

Surveys have shown creamy PB to be preferred.

The National Peanut Council states that 56 percent of people prefer creamy peanut butter to crunchy peanut butter. . They also found that women and children preferred creamy peanut butter, while men preferred crunchy peanut butter. Remember the age-old phrase “women are always right?” Well, it's clear that we're here.

According to a Columbia University interview with John Krumpner, author of Creamy and Crunchy: The Unofficial History of Peanut Butter, All-American Food, 80 percent of the peanut butter sold in the United States is cream-colored peanut butter. Only 17 percent of the country invests in crunchy peanut butter (the remaining 3 percent of sales come from cans containing a peanut butter and jelly blend), and that should speak for itself.

In addition to the professional polls, I decided to take matters into my own hands by creating a Twitter poll asking my followers to vote for their favorite peanut butter. My first poll didn't work, but when I finally figured it out, 60 percent of voters declared their love for butter PB, which is in trend with other peanut butter statistics.

The Spoon University survey also found that 70 percent of college students also prefer creamy peanut butter. While studies tend to be the strongest argument for any argument, there are a few more reasons why creamy peanut butter is better than crunchy peanut butter.

Crunchy peanut butter ruins soft bread

I honestly can't say any better than Thrillist's Kevin Alexander: "Have you ever tried to take a knife and use it to spread gravel mixed with Elmer's glue on a soft porous surface?"

Crunchy peanut butter for PB&J comes with serious risks. The bread either tears or becomes flat like cardboard due to vigorous attempts to spread the evil clumpy paste. The squashed PB&J equivalent of dry macaroni and cheese is sad and a bit gross.

Creamy Peanut Butter is much sexier

Creamy PB is as smooth as a baby's butt in warm Hawaiian sand. Crunchy PB, on the other hand, is a bumpy brown mass. It doesn't come out of the jar on the spoon in a perfect round bump like creamy PB. Instead, it is a liquid and lumpy blot.

If you want to take the word "sexy" literally, creamy peanut butter is a lot more comfortable for bedroom practice, if you know what I'm talking about. Nobody wants to chew anything while in the bedroom, unless we're talking breakfast in bed.

The Aztecs invented peanut butter, and that shit was creamy

That's right - peanut butter butter was the first type of peanut butter to exist. According to The Huffington Post, we know that the Aztecs are known for being the first to create PB, even though their pasta was closer to peanut butter. They ground the peanuts until the nuts were reduced to a relatively smooth paste.

In 1884, peanut butter was patented - the key word was "paste" (that is, the cream side). Given the technology of the time, the paste was the smoothest consistency that peanuts could be reduced to. However, at 19In 1922, a chemist named Joseph Rosefield discovered a way to create real creamy peanut butter. He later created Peter Pan peanut butter.

Notice that in this history lesson, the goal has always been creamy peanut butter. In my opinion it's because they knew they could just eat peanuts instead of ruining a flawless creamy PB. Thanks history.

Creamy PB is better for baking and smoothies

Let me preface this with the fact that nuts really do level up any baked goods from 11 to 3. I don't want crunchy bits in my chewy brownie, damn it!

Crunchy peanut butter takes the softness and crust out of any baked goods. Can you imagine crunchy horse eye? Or even worse, Peanut Butter Crunchy Fudge? This is really what nightmares are made of.

As for smoothies, they should be: smooth. If you don't have a great blender, adding crunchy PB to your "smoothie" will result in a smoothie to chew on. I, among my creamy PB boys, are not here for that.

You can technically shave your legs with creamy peanut butter

Mackenzie Patel

Okay, so it's not the most pleasant thing to wash sticky peanut butter off a razor, but imagine putting peanut chunks on your legs and picking real peanuts from a razor. At least with cream, you can simply wash the razor with soap and water to clean it. However, shaving with peanut butter leaves your skin smooth and hydrated.

Crunchy Peanut Butter's Only Saving Value

Well, all you crunchy meat lovers, this is your (only) time to shine. Crunchy peanut butter is slightly healthier than its creamy counterpart, according to Prevention.com. While both types of PB typically contain equal amounts of calories, fat, sugar, and carbs, crunchy peanut butter contains less saturated fat and 2 percent more fiber per serving.

However, creamy peanut butter is higher in protein, but we'll let crunchy be called the healthier name, especially since it doesn't really have anything else for it.
