Reading and learning about science can often be a complex and challenging journey for students. To make unfamiliar ideas and associated vocabulary more accessible and less frustrating to students, Science A-Z provides books and other resources at multiple reading levels. These leveled resources can help teachers differentiate instruction to best meet their students' needs.

Unit Nonfiction Books and other key reading materials from each science unit within a grade span (K-2, 3-4, and 5-6), are written to three levels of reading difficulty, indicated by dots on each resource: for high, for mid, and for low.

The Science A-Z team evaluates the quantitative and qualitative (objective and subjective) features of each text to determine its complexity. Using sophisticated leveling formulas, including the best-in-class, proprietary Learning A-Z Text Leveling System, ensures that texts are grade appropriate.

Text features taken into account include:

  • average words per sentence
  • average sentences per paragraph
  • percentage of unfamiliar vocabulary
  • number and complexity of visual devices (e.g., diagrams, charts, maps)
  • structural elements of nonfiction text (e.g., table of contents, captions, sidebar features, glossary, index)
  • prerequisite prior knowledge
  • concept difficulty

Reading to Learn

To help students read as the means of developing proficiency with the language and content of science, Science A-Z takes challenging concepts and vocabulary and makes them accessible.

Text resources from Science A-Z are valuable tools for developing reading comprehension skills in students who span a broad range of reading proficiency. These resources are designed to present the science topics and concepts teachers are required to teach in order to satisfy state and national standards.

Science A-Z's three reading levels within each of the three grade spans ensure science content is accessible to all students as they read to learn. Furthermore, Science A-Z's high, mid, and low reading levels within each of the three grade spans correlate to a range of levels found in the Learning A-Z Text Leveling System (see chart below).

Science topic coverage varies according to standards required by different school districts, states, and countries. Because Science A-Zs resources are provided at multiple reading levels, teachers required to cover standards-based topics can use resources from a higher or lower grade level to teach a given topic.

Level Correlation Charts

Refer to the charts below for approximate correlations between Science A-Z levels and other leveling systems to assign appropriate science texts to students. Ultimately, teachers should use their professional judgment along with reader and task considerations to determine if an individual text at a given level is appropriate for a student.

At Benchmark Education Company, we recognize that any gradient is fallible because a book’s level of difficulty will vary among districts and schools, and from student to student. We recommend that teachers make careful decisions in selecting leveled texts for students and consider the student’s current literacy behaviors and his/her prior knowledge of the content being presented.

If prior knowledge of the topic is a limitation, the designated reading level of the text may need to be altered. We encourage teachers to confer with one another as they establish a schoolwide book room and develop a sensitivity to appropriate text levels for their school population.

Please note that the grade levels assigned to letter and number levels on this chart reflect ideal expectations only. Students’ actual reading levels may vary more widely.

About access levels - Azure DevOps

Azure DevOps Services | Azure DevOps Server 2022 - Azure DevOps Server 2019 | TFS 2018

Access levels grant or restrict access to certain web portal features. This is in addition to the permissions granted through security groups, which grant or restrict certain tasks. Access levels allow administrators to give users access to the features they want and pay only for those features.

Important!

To see the content available for your platform, make sure the correct version of this article is selected in the version selector above the content. Support for different capabilities depends on whether you're running Azure DevOps Services or Azure DevOps Server on-premises.
To find out which on-premises version you're using, see Find your Azure DevOps platform and version.

When a user or group is added to a team or project, they are automatically granted access to the features supported by the default access level and the features supported by the security group to which they are added. Most users can access most features by assigning access level "Basic" and security group "Members ". For a simplified overview of the permissions assigned to the most common groups Readers , Contributors and Project Administrators , see Default Permissions.

To add user or group accounts to specific access levels, see Manage users and access. Remember to set each user's access level based on what you have purchased for that user.

To add user or group accounts to specific access levels, see Change access levels. Remember to set each user's access level based on what you have purchased for that user.

Supported access levels

Assign one of the following access levels to users or user groups:

  • Basic . Provides access to most features. Assign users with a Visual Studio Professional subscription, Azure DevOps Server CAL, and users for whom you pay for basic access in your organization.
  • Basic + Test Plans : Provides access to all features included in Basic as well as Azure Test Plans. Assign to users with a Visual Studio Test Professional or MSDN Platforms subscription, or to users for whom you pay for access to the Basic + Test Plans tier in your organization.
  • Interested party . Can be assigned to an unlimited number of users for free. Provides partial access to private projects and mostly full access to public projects. Assign to users without a license or subscription who need access to a limited set of features. For more information about feature access, see the Stakeholder Access Quick Reference.
  • Visual Studio Subscriber . Assign to users who already have a Visual Studio subscription. The system automatically recognizes the user's subscription - Visual Studio Enterprise, Visual Studio Professional, Visual Studio Test Professional, or MSDN Platform - and enables any other features included in their subscription level. When assigned base or stakeholder , they also receive Visual Studio subscription benefits when they sign in.

Tip

When adding new users, we recommend that you assign the Visual Studio Subscriber tier (as opposed to the Basic tier) if necessary, to prevent you from being charged the "Basic " plan before the user first signs in.

  • Interested parties : provides partial access, can be assigned to an unlimited number of users free of charge. Assign to users without a license or subscription who need access to a limited set of features.
  • Basic . Provides access to most features. Assign to users with the Azure DevOps Server CAL with a Visual Studio Professional subscription, as well as users for whom you pay for basic access in your organization.
  • Basic + Test Plans . Grants access to users with a monthly subscription to Test Manager, Visual Studio Test Professional, or an MSDN Platforms subscription.
  • VS Enterprise . Provides access to premium features. Assign to users with a Visual Studio Enterprise subscription.
  • Stakeholders : grants partial access, can be assigned to an unlimited number of users free of charge. Assign to users without a license or subscription who need access to a limited set of features.
  • Basic . Provides access to most features. Assign to users with a Visual Studio Professional CAL or subscription.
  • Enhanced (Deprecated access level deprecated in Azure DevOps Server 2019d.): Provides access to premium features. Assign only to users with an MSDN or Visual Studio Test Professional subscription.
  • VS Enterprise . Provides access to premium features. Assign to users with a Visual Studio Enterprise subscription.

The following table lists these features available for each supported access level. Visual Studio Test Professional and MSDN Platform Subscriptions provide access to the same features as Visual Studio Enterprise.
