12 Romantic Valentine's Day Rhymes To Melt Your Heart

The most famous Valentine’s Day rhyme is of course, Roses are red… There are many different versions but the romantic rhyme below never goes out of style. Here are 10 of the best Valentine’s Day rhymes, some traditional and some contemporary.

Throughout the world, we celebrate romantic love and Valentine’s Day on February 14 each year. It is thought that Valentine’s Day may be linked to the ancient Roman festival, Lupercalia.

Valentine’s Day is also associated with the Christian martyr, Valentine of Rome who according to legend was persecuted for performing forbidden marriage ceremonies. He was sentenced to death and wrote a note to the judge’s daughter whom he had healed, with his last words being “from your Valentine”.

Short Valentine’s Day Rhymes

A version of the iconic Valentine’s Day poem, Roses are Red, can be found in a collection of British nursery rhymes from 1784.   That version is:

The rose is red, the violet’s blue,
The honey’s sweet, and so are you.

However, we can trace the line roses red all the way back to 1590 and the famous English poem The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser:

She bath’d with roses red, and violets blew,
And all the sweetest flowres, that in the forrest grew.

The modern day version of the classic Valentine verse is:

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Sugar is sweet,
And so are you

I’d give the leaves to anyone,
but the heart I’d give to you

A fun Valentine’s rhyme

I want to be your only and forget the rest.

Traditional Valentine’s Day Rhymes

For something more traditional, How Do I Love Thee? Sonnet 43 by Elizabeth Barrett Browning is one of the most romantic rhymes. Elizabeth was an inspirational poet, born in 1806 who wrote her first epic poem aged 12.

Despite having a tyrannical father, a lung disease and a spinal injury, she taught herself Hebrew and continued to publish poems. She campaigned against slavery and child labour.

Elizabeth eloped to Florence, Italy with the poet Robert Browning in 1846. Her Sonnets from the Portuguese, are dedicated to Robert and were published in 1850.

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.

I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.

I love with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, — I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life! — and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

This short romantic rhyme is ideal for lovers of the great outdoors:

Down in a forest
Carved in a tree
3 little words
I love thee

The famous Scottish poet, Robert Burns, created A Red, Red Rose in 1794 but it’s still charming today. Originally a song, it is often used as a poem:

O my Luve’s like a red, red rose,
That’s newly sprung in June:
O my Luve’s like the melodie,
That’s sweetly play’d in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a’ the seas gang dry.

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi’ the sun;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o’ life shall run.

And fare-thee-weel, my only Luve!
And fare-thee-weel, a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho’ ’twere ten thousand mile!

The famous Romantic poet, Lord Byron, wrote She Walks in Beauty in 1814. This poem is thought to have been inspired by Anne Beatrix Wilmot, whom he met at a party and was married to his first cousin.

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling place.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

A true friendship is like a Valentine,
Where your lives regularly intertwine,
It matures like a fine wine,
And feels like a ray of sunshine!

London Valentine Rhyme

And finally, this is a Valentine’s rhyme that we created for London. At times exasperating, at other times thrilling, London is never boring.

This Valentine’s Day rhyming poem celebrates our special relationship with London.

London, we love you on sunny days
And also for your colourful ways
We love it when you’re feeling pretty
And when you’re more nitty gritty

We can’t resist your green spaces
And incredible historical places
We really dig your hidden gems
And long walks along The Thames

We love your vibrant dining scene
And that you’re home to the Queen
We even love you in the rain
Although your transport can be a pain 😉

We’ve tried to leave you many times
Yet we’d sadly miss Big Ben’s chimes
So London, we are here to stay
Have a fabulous Valentine’s Day!
