Snowman roll, say and cover is a fun game to play in a group. All you need is dice and some pretty buttons to set this game up. The frequency of /s/ in the English Language is abundant, and in nearly every spontaneous sentence will contain many /s/ sounds. Use these super easy printable game activities to elicit natural speech from the child with extra focus on the /s/ sound.

S Words Speech Therapy Medial S Sound Games

There are a number of reasons why children don’t pronounce the ‘s’ sound properly as they are learning it. It’s essential we give them plenty of activities and practice to help them develop their s initial, medial and ending sounds.

Games help engage children in the skill at hand without them feeling like it’s a part of learning. Have you ever struggled to get your students to sit down and complete a worksheet? I’m not opposed to worksheets per se, but I do frown upon them, especially if there’s no real engagement coming from the child.

This is why I like to create learning games. They are definitely a way to help kids engage with the content or skill you’re teaching.

Speech Therapy Game Ideas

If you’re looking for some fun speech therapy games, there are plenty all over the internet. I particularily love the online no print speech therapy games. Simply load the game, play it and then choose another. Very simple and effective with no headaches of printing.

Here’s a simple technique you can incorporate in your speech therapy sessions using naming objects (in different categories).

S Sound Speech Therapy Snowman Game

This snowman game is a great way to incorporate speech practice and articulation with s sound words. There are beginning, medial and ending s sound words on each snowman template. Print as many copies of the template you need, then use colourful buttons to have the kids cover the words once they sound them out.

How to play

Print the snowman cards, then have the kids roll the die. Then say the name of one picture on the snowman that many times. They will then cover the picture with a button. They continue this until they cover all the pictures.

The most essential component of this activity is getting the kids to practice utterances and saying the words and sounds. S Words Speech Therapy Games Snowman activity is an excellent way to encourage kids to practice their speech s sounds.

Jan 15, 2022 As a speech pathologist that works with little kids all of the time, one of the biggest sounds that I work with is the “S” sound.

An articulation disorder or speech sound disorder is when a child has problems making speech sounds properly. One typical articulation error kids make is the /s/ sound.

To produce a clear /s/ sound, the tongue is raised high in the mouth to almost touching the alveolar ridge, the roof of the mouth. This action by the tongue should create a groove in the center of the tongue through which the air flows. Because the tongue constricts the space through which the breath stream travels, the /s/ sound should have a faint hissing quality to it.

If your child is having a difficult time reaching this position, you can stick some peanut butter or marshmallow behind their teeth so that your child can raise their tongue to hit the spot where the sound is created!

To produce a clear /s/ sound the tongue is raised high in the mouth to almost touching the alveolar ridge, the roof of the mouth.

Let’s Start with These

When working on this sound, I print out a picture of Sammy the Snake. It’s a very simple picture that isn’t distracting for young children. If you don’t like this picture, you can easily google “plain snakes” and a multitude of pictures will come up that you can use.

As your child traces the snake’s body, give them the /s/ sound to produce. In order to produce any sound in conversation, they have to be able to say it in isolation, or by itself.

You can also read a list of words that have the letter “s” in it. When your child hears the sound produced correctly, they can hold up the snake! This is a great activity because it will teach your child discrimination skills for when they are producing the sound independently.

Where to find some words? You will find hundreds more on Word Vault Essential where you can take data and play the words aloud. This is great to use right now while access to speech pathologists is restricted due to the pandemic. You’ll be able to determine if your child has gained progress and if you can move on to the syllable level of production.

Syllable Level

Once the child is stimulable for the /s/ sound, have them use it continually for many seconds at a time. You can add vowel sounds such as, /a,e,i,o,u/. For example, have your child say “sa, sa, sa” as they trace the body of the snake.

Have them hold the sound as they trace their finger all the way down Sammy the Snake’s body.

You can also do something reinforcing while they say the sound, like blowing one bubble at a time. When the bubble pops, the child can stop saying the sound.

Word Level

The “s” sound is a great sound to work on because it’s so accessible in the English language. One of my favorite activities I do with any articulation sound is a sensory bin. You can even use a cardboard box for this activity if you don’t have a plastic bin at home. Fill it with rice or noodles and place small toys inside of it that correspond to the letter you are working towards. You can find these small toys at the dollar store. As your child pulls out the toy, have them repeat it three times to make sure they are producing the sound correctly.

Phrases/Sentences

I typically play “word sandwich” once my kids get to this level. You can use play pieces of bread or just two brightly covered pieces of paper. Inside the “bread,” put pictures of objects that have “s.” Have your child say the sentence, “Today, I’m making a _____ sandwich.”

Another activity you can do is print out a picture of Superman and Superwoman. Have your child walk around your house or outside and say things like, “Superman is sitting on the _____.” If you can find objects that have the “s” sound in them, like the sink, that’s even better! Sticking with the superhero theme, you can make diagrams about what superheroes do . . . they save people, they soar through the sky, they have secret identities.

invisible market is waiting for heroes / Sudo Null IT News

Surround binaural sound from the headphones creates an immersive effect and forces the player's brain to finish the "graphics". Audio quests, audio RPGs, and blind shooters are available on GooglePlay, iTunes, and Steam for between $2 and $20. It is all the more curious that in Russia sound games and interactive audio books are an empty niche where only a few try themselves. What kind of invisible market is this, who needs it and how to approach it - Maria Lisyanskaya, the author of GeekBrains, found out. nine0005

The article consists of four parts:

  • find out who needs sound games and why,
  • we tell you what technologies audio games are built on,
  • talking to a player who buys audio games and follows their development,
  • we talk about the tools that are useful to the developer of sound games.

Audio games - why and why

Computer games that can be played with your eyes closed attracted the attention of professional developers in the early 2000s, when the technological base for such projects matured. 3D sound positioning systems made it possible to navigate in the playing space by ear. This gave new ideas for gameplay and instantly interested people with visual impairments. The search for enemies by sound was implemented back in 1996, in the graphic horror Enemy Zero, where you had to look for invisible monsters. But then there was no talk of a full-fledged audio panorama.

Later, a new incentive appeared for the development of audio games - they are convenient to play on mobile devices . Here you will find non-standard gameplay, ear training, and the opportunity to play after a working day without straining your eyes. Put on your headphones and go. At the same time, you can be in a public place and not lose control over what is happening around. nine0005

Sound games are few and far between — hundreds. There are even fewer high-quality products with professional voice acting, so every new product attracts attention. To see this, check out the audiogames. net forum where new releases are discussed. The main part of the audience here are blind players. Thanks to screen access and braille displays, totally blind people use the computer like everyone else, but they have little access to mainstream graphic games - mostly fighting games where you can hear which side the enemy is on (Mortal Kombat IX and X, Injustice 2, etc. ). This situation encourages the blind to take on the development of games themselves and, of course, support those who release something useful with dollars and euros. nine0005

The entry threshold for audio game development is lower than for graphic game development. No need to hire artists and animators, no need to measure polygons or shaders with anyone. In your game world, everything that you can express in words and sound is possible. A feasible task for small teams and enthusiasts.

How it works

Some sound games are fully voiced by real people, others - by a speech synthesizer. Many people associate screen-sounding technologies with Windows accessibility features, the TalkBack app on Android, and programs for creating audio books from text (ICE Book Reader, Balabolka, Demagog, etc.). The basic principle is the same everywhere: a speech synthesizer reads aloud to you. nine0005

Audio games with professional voice acting can also give out some information through a synthesizer. This allows you to listen to the text in the desired voice, with adjustable pitch and speech speed. For example, a person who is listening to a text in a foreign language may slow down their reading to make out each word. And the one who saves time, on the contrary, will set one and a half or double speed. If the game allows you to take notes or rename objects, again, a synthesizer will come in handy. For amateur authors, artificial voiceovers mean savings on sound recording, the ability to reduce the weight of the game and change dialogue on the fly without having to re-record the voices of the announcers. nine0005

To voice themselves on Windows, audio games typically use Text-to-speech (TTS) technology and the MS SAPI speech interface. Under this interface, different companies produce voice synthesizers, which are also called speech engines. Each engine has its own set of voices, usually for several languages.

By default, you have at least one English SAPI voice installed on your system. Russian, French and other voices can be downloaded from the Internet. For example, on GitHub there is a free RHVoice voice engine and several Russian voices for it. Esperanto, English, Georgian and Ukrainian are also supported. Compared to commercial products from the Nuance Vocalizer Expressive line, RHVoice voices do not sound as realistic, but are intelligible and with pronounced intonations. nine0005

If you delve a little deeper into the world of sound games, you will find that some of them are not voiced through SAPI or its equivalents for other OSes, but with the help of an external screen reader ("screen reader"). Such software allows you to control the operating system and applications running in it by ear. Among blind Windows users, the free NVDA screen reader is popular. Making friends with your game is easy - using the NVDA Controller API library. We will touch on the topic of screen readers in the Audio Game Engine section. nine0005

In terms of genre and gameplay organization, sound games cover many areas: from simple puzzles to large-scale RPGs, simulations, racing and strategies. Let's understand with examples.

Talking to a player

In order not to get hung up on theory and my own subjective impressions, I interviewed Vladimir Erokhin, a person who moderated the site about sound games blind.games for some time, still plays audio games a lot and knows the community of blind gamers from the inside. nine0005

- What are your favorite audio games and why? Share your impressions.

- My absolute favorite is "A Hero's Call". I love RPG, and this is not just a party RPG, but an open world game, easy navigation, advanced skill system, interesting plot, lots of quests. What a cool ambient and surround sound there is - you just need to play and feel it. You walk past the fountain and clearly feel that it is behind you, you hear how far it is, you hear how the drops hit the stone. The developers somehow screwed the technology from the Oculus Rift virtual reality helmets. I understood this from the oculus.dll file and the names of other libraries in the game folder. Even passing characters are voiced. The whole sound weighs more than a gigabyte. Few games without graphics weigh so much. nine0005

And the music! This is a separate issue. The trick is that each character from among your party members has its own musical theme. And each character has his own story and quests that reveal his character and motivation. In the dialogues, you act out the image of the main character, and your choice really affects both the relationship with the NPC and the skills that are revealed to you and your group. Through dialogues, you can even pump some of the companions, if you motivate them, help them become more confident in themselves. You can talk to the characters in the group at any time, and sometimes it advances you in the story. But it is difficult to predict the consequences of a choice. I've done a good deed - I returned to the owner a ring stolen by a party thief. I didn’t know that later my companion would lead me to the customer of the theft, who would eventually remain offended and close our access to the best item store in the game. Well, the thief, of course, was upset ...

All dialogues are voiced by actors. I normally understand English by ear, and if a person does not keep up with the speaker, he can re-read the same text several times through SAPI and then use the up and down arrows to select the answer. For those who find it very difficult, in the settings they can turn on real-time Google translation.

— Does this game have any disadvantages?

- She is short. The developers are talking about 17 hours of gameplay. I played in fits and starts, so it took a month and a half to complete. Never regretted neither time nor money: 9I bet the game out of 10. I would like the authors to continue in the same spirit.

- It's only for Windows, there will be no mobile release?

— Of course not! There, the engine is not even sharpened for mobile devices. To transfer the entire interface would have to be rewritten. Unless there may still be a release on the Mac. They are now making a version with graphics support so that the sighted can play more and make money from it.

— Is there anything interesting among mobile games? nine0027

- Yes! But here we need to look at what platform we are talking about. Most of the mobile audio games are now released under iOS. Under Android - very little.
My second favorite game, A Blind Legend, is available for PC, iOS, and Android. I went through it on PC and on iOS at different difficulty levels. Very dynamic gameplay! Nowhere else have I seen a game in which it would be necessary, running away from the guards, to jump on the roofs and, in order not to break, put up a shield. A very interesting plot concept: a daughter helps a blind knight in his travels - she warns of dangers, tells where to go. Unusual and high-quality combat system, cool bosses. If you fight with a troll, you fight with a troll, but if you fight with an underwater monster, everything is completely different. Because everyone has their own behavior, their own system of strikes and tactics. Before attacking someone, you need to learn how he fights, and only then catch him on a long swing, for example, and strike. Otherwise, you will die very quickly - the game does not forgive mistakes. nine0005

— How long is it?

- This game is shorter than "A Hero's Call". They also say that of the two versions of the voice acting, the French one is better. I cannot appreciate this, let those who know or study French will appreciate it.

- How is the gameplay different on a mobile device?

- In my opinion, the game feels sharper with a touchscreen, because it's very easy on a computer, for example, to put a block with the "F" key. And from a mobile phone it’s not possible to set blocks so mechanically, you are still hurt, because the screen does not respond so quickly. You feel the connection of game actions with your movements more, you feel the weapon better. Actually, I'm covering up for touchscreen glitches right now (laughs). On a smartphone, this game is a great time killer, especially if you need to pass the time on the road. Although in principle it claims to be much more. The voice acting is great, the storyline is decent. nine0005

- Does the mobile version have paid content?

— I don't remember exactly, but, in my opinion, if you get killed in the mobile version and you want to immediately continue the game, you need to buy something. Otherwise, you will be able to return to the game only after some time. Therefore, in fact, I prefer the PC version and played it more often. For a computer in general, there are many times more games and I spend more time on it.

- What other games did you buy besides "A Hero's Call"?

- Entombed (it's a dungeon crawler, I did a stream on it), The Nightjar, Audio Defense zombie shooter, two parts of Papa Sangre - they are just awesome! Audio Defense and the second Papa Sangre use an accelerometer. That is, you control the character by turning with the phone in your hand. In a shooter, this is very convenient, because when zombies are attacking you from different sides, you kill one - you turn around sharply and shoot at the second. In close combat, you can still strike with a bat or stick from top to bottom. By the way, in Audio Defense you have a lot of different weapons, excellently voiced, which you can upgrade. Now I'm already used to it, but at first it was a very interesting experience. That's how I casually named a few more favorite games. nine0005

- You haven't really talked about Papa Sangre yet.

- This is an adventure. They don't let fight. At each level, in order to solve the problem: save someone or find something, you need to distract or bypass the monsters. If the monster is sleeping, and you start stomping hard, touching the glass or rustling, it will wake up. And the big question is, can you run away from him. So it's better to be careful. And you rearrange your legs with two buttons on the touchscreen: one leg at the top of the display, the other at the bottom. You put both hands on your smartphone and walk. If you run too fast, you stumble, you fall, you make a fuss, and when you get up, they'll get to you. Also, when you run away, you can crash into the wall. As long as you turn around, you will definitely be devoured. And not all monsters sleep. Some walk on the level, some also fly. And dying in this game is very unpleasant: the sound when a character is being eaten is too realistic, binaural, and not at all for the impressionable. nine0005

Is Screen Reader useful for this game?

- Only in the menu, and the levels are fully voiced. Voice Over, which is responsible for screen access in iOS, has to be unloaded during the game, because otherwise it intercepts clicks.

— How is the second part of Papa Sangre different in terms of plot?

— In the second part, the hero enters the kingdom of memories after death. In order to regain the human body, you need to collect memories in the form of musical fragments, and so interesting stories gradually develop, which are not always connected with the main character. It can be, for example, the memories of a sailor about a sunken submarine. And in the second part there was a system of achievements. Get out of a burning house in so many seconds, never raise the alarm and 100,500 more achievements. If a person suffers from munchkinism, he will hang with this game for a long time until he collects all the achievements. nine0005

- Have you ever regretted buying an audio game?

- Only once when I bought Blind Gladiator. They didn't provide a demo. “A Hero's Call” was also not provided, but at least you could listen to audio previews there. And then I bought it and regretted it. In other cases, on the contrary, I was pleased to encourage the work of the authors, to encourage them to do something else.

- What annoys you about sound games?

- Many games suffer from bad sound, so bad that I don't play. I'm also annoyed by stupid repetitive plots, especially in side-scrollers where you run and kill packs of monsters. Rarely do games last long. In crafts on BGT, an abundance of bugs is annoying. nine0005

- What are the best genres for audio games?

- Action can be well implemented. The Road to Rage - there is such an action shooter, and it is written in PureBasic. And it's very well written: if I didn't know, I wouldn't think that this is possible on PureBasic. You can also implement a strategy very well in sound, where active actions are not needed. I wouldn't mind new quality Top Speed races or a simulator.

— How do you like the Eurofly flight simulator? nine0027

— I love this game for its scale and deep development. By the way, my friend, also a blind player, took part in adding real-life airports to this game. Thanks to him, for example, the Kemerovo airport appeared there. The map reflects the vicinity of the airport, so if you live nearby, there is a good chance to see your area in the manual study of the map.

— What game do you miss? What else do you expect from audio games?

- They would also make a tactical audio game like the sighted “Jazz. Employment” or “Jagged Alliance”, which I played with the help of friends. I'd be stuck there! This could be done in the form of a modpack for the sound game Tactical Battle. But I would prefer a full standalone game. So that there are mercenaries, suppliers of weapons, so that it is necessary to capture roadblocks. I would also play an audio game set in the Warhammer universe. nine0005

— What do you like about multiplayer games?

- I play a lot of text MUDs. These are not audio games, but they are available and some of them can be set to sound sets that play on certain events. At first I was surprised that sighted people still play mada, where there is no graphics. A friend told me that he plays for the sake of an adequate company. Because you go into games like WOW and hear from schoolchildren about mothers and so on.

— People who like to read gather in Madas. nine0027

— Yes, there is a lot to read. And they like to fantasize themselves, to represent the game world. Audio games have this too.

— In what way, in your opinion, can audio games be interesting for sighted people?

- Some sighted people I talk to play audio games for the sake of new experiences. Even if it doesn’t work out of habit and they often lose, they still have fun: “How cool I crashed just now, ahh ... What a sound!” and so on.

— How do you find games for yourself? nine0027

- Through the audiogames.net website and its forum - you can track interesting projects there long before the release. Through friends with whom we share games for the sighted and the blind. Also through the AppleVis site, where all sound iOS games appear.

— Thank you for the story! I feel that a lot is still left behind the scenes, but you can’t discuss everything at once.

Please. Yes, the same mads are a separate big topic worthy of a separate article.

Genres and examples of sound games

We have compiled the TOP player, and now we will add links and facts so that you have a better idea of what we are talking about.

Sound Action and Adventure

A Blind Legend - mobile hack-and-slash with realistic binaural sound and real-time combat. The game can be downloaded in English and French from Play Market, iTunes Store and Steam. Developers from the Dowino studio (with the participation of Radio France) raised this project on crowdfunding and raised $53,469.

Papa Sangre for iOS is a survival horror inspired by Mexican mythology. The only way to survive is to walk quietly and not wake up dashingly, and in which case - to run. The popularity of the first part (2010) inspired the developers from Something Else for a sequel, which was released in 2013. The sound quality in the game can be assessed here. The studio also released other audio games: The Nightjar and Audio Defense. Alas, all of them have already disappeared from the AppStore. But the Papa Engine, which allows you to make real-time games with binaural sound, has taken on a life of its own. Some time ago, the developers announced that they were reworking it to be compatible with Unity. nine0005

Sound 3D shooters

Shades of Doom is a first-person shooter for Windows. We navigate the terrain with the help of a computer, as well as by the echo of our own steps, the draft in the doorways and the noise from objects nearby. The game simulates the Doppler effect - the frequency of the sound changes when the source moves. The latest version of Shades of Doom is on sale on the developer's website for $25.

Swamp is a multiplayer FPS. The action takes place during the invasion of zombies in the town near the swamp. You have to survive (it's not easy) and complete missions together with other players. An English-language review of the game can be heard here.

Audio RPG

Sound RPGs are a haven for the novice developer and a chance to realize epic visions without spending a fortune on graphics.

Source: OutOfSightGames.com.

A Hero's Call is an RPG with six character classes and 70 enemy types. Runs on Windows XP, 7, 8, 10, and with the help of the Wine program - on Linux and MacOS. The game was created using FMOD Studio tools. There are sound demos of navigation and controls. Developers ask for $20 for the game, and this price is paid to them, including users from Russia.

Sound simulators

Eurofly is a free civil aviation simulator. The game uses real GPS coordinates and a detailed digital atlas, according to which you can study the nature of the terrain and the location of settlements in areas of interest. Fly, refresh your knowledge of geography and get acquainted with the world's airports, each of which has its own approach height and its own characteristics. You can go on a "free flight" or go through missions in sequence and open model aircraft. nine0005

The game covers all aspects of pre-flight preparation and flight: boarding passengers, refueling, communicating with airport controllers, announcements in the cabin, etc. Time passes at real speed here: if the flight takes 5 hours, you fly that much. When you run out of fuel, you can land at the nearest airport, unless it is prohibited by the terms of the mission. For example, an airline may prohibit you from crossing Austrian airspace on your way from Slovakia to the Czech Republic.

A lot of mods have been released for Eurofly: planes, airports, stewardesses (there is a Russian steward Andrey), dispatchers, sound effects. On the developer's website, you can track "current traffic" - where and from where the game flights fly, where each aircraft is currently located and how many passengers it has on board. nine0005

The project exists and develops at the expense of players' donations. The game is available in English, Slovak, Czech, Italian and Spanish. According to some reports, work is underway on Russian localization.

And for those who like to fight, there is GMA TankCommander - a tank simulator that fully voices itself. You are attacked by tanks, helicopters, cars, trains, artillery and troops. During maneuvering, you need to avoid hitting a mine or a swamp. The game is in English, there is an unofficial crack. nine0005

Side-scrollers

You can’t say “side view” about a sound game, but in terms of the organization of the playing space, this is exactly how it works: to move forward, you press the “right” key. In Angel gift , an angel girl is trying to bring back love, joy and peace to a village captured by demons. To do this, Liriel sits on the roofs of houses, listens to what is happening inside, and gives people what they lack, and when necessary, fights demons.

Augmented Reality

Visual effects are primarily associated with augmented reality, but sound can play an equally important role. Project Audiogames (3D-sound game installation)
- an example of an interactive three-dimensional sound environment with which the user interacts to solve conditional game problems.

Interactive Audiobook

Audio Novella is the simplest version of a sound game, but with high-quality voice acting and a well-thought-out script, it captivates like a good book. Story cutscenes are not separated from the gameplay - the narrative develops continuously, so you need to carefully listen to each scene. For a player, this is a good a way to improve the knowledge of a foreign language : English, Japanese or French - if you consider in which countries sound games are released more often.

In 1997, the sound novel "Real Sound: Kaze no Regret" was released exclusively in Japan for the Sega Saturn. Everything here, starting with the main menu, was voiced by actors. The player heard music, background sounds, character dialogues and chose options for action using the gamepad. Real Sound was one of the first commercial non-visual games. nine0005

Audio quest works on similar principles, but is more interactive: we move around locations, listen to their descriptions, communicate with characters, use inventory items. Sometimes action elements are woven into the quest, as in the mystical audio quest Chillingham, which has now disappeared from the Internet, where there was a combat system. A key role in games of the genre is played by the plot and atmosphere. An audio game can be made on Unity or another engine that supports 3D sound positioning. But there are specialized tools for this task. It's time to talk about them, and about the libraries that will come in handy if you want to create your own audio game engine or delve deeper into the topic.

Sound work

We talked about the Doppler effect in Shades of Doom. In the days of Windows XP, this was done using DirectSound3D. In Windows 8 and 10, the X3DAudio API and the Xaudio2 library are responsible for working with positional audio. nine0005

You describe sound sources using the X3DAUDIO_EMITTER structure, which contains the Doppler Scaler parameter, which is responsible for the severity of the Doppler effect. The parameter can take values in the range from 0.0f to FLT_MAX. A source can have multiple channels. Sound from multiple sources blends realistically into the overall scene.

To control the "listener" - the object relative to which the sound scene is rendered - use the X3DAUDIO_LISTENER structure.

The easiest way to work with XAudio2 is in C++, but there are wrappers. nine0005

  • For Python , there is Pyrilla, a wrapper for the Gorilla Audio C library that runs on Windows, Linux, and OS X. Pyrilla is included in the PyPI package directory and can be installed without dependencies with a simple pip install.
  • On the .NET platform, you can create positional audio using the XAudio2 HRTF wrapper from GitHub. The upside is that you can use the binaural synthesis (HRTF) system without Unity and other powerful tools. The solution is tailored for Windows 10.

FMOD . Anyone who is at least a little familiar with the topic of sound in games probably knows about this library. It is used in commercial projects like StarCraft II, Just Cause 3 and MotoGP17. Through the FMOD API, it can be used in Unity, UnrealEngine and other game engines. A description of all the features of the library requires a separate brochure. In short, FMOD allows you to create 3D sound, learn the properties of the user's sound card, and use the WMM and A3D sound systems. The library is easy to distribute with the game - just copy the .dll to the user's hard drive. nine0005

BASS . The BASS cross-platform library will provide you with sound not only on Windows (x86 and x64), but also on Android, iOS, Linux and MacOS. There are tools for 3D positioning of sound and adding effects (echo, reverb, distortion, flanger), support for A3D and EAX, as well as the ability to play tracker music, record samples and broadcast audio streams to the Internet. A plus for a beginner game developer will be the availability of an API for using BASS with Python (pybass), C # (Bass.Net), Java (NativeBass), C / C ++. Old school and hardcore lovers can also experiment with PureBasic, FlatAssembler, Delphi, VisualBasic. nine0005

Audio Game Engine

Blastbay Game Toolkit (BGT) is exclusively for creating sound games for Windows. There is support for multiplayer mode and no genre restrictions. The game code is written in the scripting language AngelScript. Since 2014, BGT has been free for commercial and non-commercial use. Engine users have released dozens of libraries for it, which can be found on the official forum.

BGT works out of the box with MS SAPI and all popular screen readers: NVDA, JAWS, Window eyes and System access. You can offer the player a choice: use one of the SAPI voices installed on the computer or a screen reader. You can also have the game automatically check if the player has a screen reader running, and if not, enable SAPI output. nine0005

Unfortunately, the author stopped supporting the engine in 2016, but in terms of features, BGT is still not outdated and is suitable for the first projects that will give you a starting experience in audio game development.

Examples of games on BGT:

  • Kringle Crash is a small arcade game where you are Santa Claus and must protect fragile Christmas gifts from elves who have gone mad.
  • Obsessive Compulsive is a logic trainer that forces you to sort, group and match objects. There are no right answers, the main thing is not to contradict yourself in anything. The game is not compiled and requires the BGT engine to be installed. But you can study its code! nine0012
  • Damage extreme is a sound arcade game that fully voices itself using MS SAPI. The player will have to defend the base alone from tanks, aircraft and troops. This is another partially open source game that you can explore.

Working with speech interfaces

For speech synthesis and recognition in the game, you can use the TurboPower Async Professional tools, which provide direct access to the Microsoft Speech API, TAPI and serial ports - from the C ++ Builder and ActiveX environments. nine0005

Working with augmented and virtual sound reality

The Oculus audio spatial positioning technology was mentioned in the interview above. Its detailed description is here.

Google Resonance Audio spatial sound system allows you to create complex sound environments for games, applications of augmented and virtual reality. The system runs on Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux. The presence of an open source API and SDK (under the Apache 2.0 license) allows you to make friends with different programming languages: Java, JavaScript, C/C++, Objective-C. nine0020 In addition, Resonance Audio integrates with Unity, Unreal Engine, FMOD, Wwise and DAW (Digital Audio Workstation).

Conclusion

So far, interested users are buying audio games from foreign developers. The lack of competition from domestic teams is an unfortunate gap, because the creation of sound games is relatively simple and inexpensive. Instead of making a hundred thousandth clone of minecraft or a typical casual game for gaining experience, it makes sense to try yourself in a new direction. nine0005

Even if you don't want to forego graphics entirely, you can make the game accessible to the ear with keyboard shortcuts and optional audio commentary.

I would be glad if this article will give someone new thoughts: inspire the creation of a sound game or encourage the use of speech interfaces in the application. Questions can be left in the comments - I will try to answer.
