The most Intelligent show created by the Imperfect race of Man

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The most intelligent show ever seen by the eyes of man, and created by man too.

This show greatly critiques the acts and creations of our imperfect society by making various remarks throughout the 'host segments' and 'movie segments' and makes good hilarity in the process.

If you have never seen it, you have to! I'd greatly recommend it for geeks and the fashionable alike, though the geeks seem to understand it a lot more.

“Hi!” “Hi, Sid, eat your cereal. It’s almost time for school.” “Okay, Mom! “Hey, what’s that smoke coming out of the tea kettle?” “When water gets very, very hot, it turns into steam. Now eat your cereal.” “Whoa! That’s amazing! I just learned something new about water! “Gotta go tell my friends at school!” “Bye, Mom! “Hi, Teacher Susie!” “Hi!” “So, you know the water that comes out of the faucet at home? Well, when water is like that, we call it a liquid. Aaand sometimes that water can change. I wonder how it changes and what else water can change into. I’m gonna go ask my friends.” “Yeah . . . talking about water makes me thirsty!” “Hi, Sid.” “Hi, May. Do you know any ways that water can change?” “Yes, I know a way. When it’s very cold outside, the water becomes really hard—kind of like a rock! “That’s called ice. Like ice cubes or glaciers at the North Pole. ” “What about you, Gabriela? How else can water change?” “I know! I’ve observed that sometimes water changes when it gets very, very hot. “Heating water in a pan makes it turn into a cloud that floats away in the air.” “Hey, that’s exactly what I observed in my kitchen this morning. My mom called it steam!” “Okay, everyone, come on in!” “Oh boy! It’s time for class!” “Yay!” “I heard that you all noticed that water changes depending on its temperature.” “So, what does temperature mean?” “Temperature is how you feel inside and outside. For example, you may feel warm or you may feel cold. Temperature is measured with a thermometer. And so we see that when the temperature falls below thirty-two degrees, water changes into ice.” “Yes, Teacher Susie! It becomes hard, like a rock!” “May is right, scientists! The water has changed to the solid state from the liquid state. “But if the temperature gets warmer and makes the thermometer rise above the freezing mark, then the ice melts and the water becomes liquid again. ” “Ooh . . .” “I have a question. What happens if you heat up water?” “The water will stay in the liquid state until it heats up to 212 degrees. Starting at that temperature, it boils and then changes into steam.” “And it floats away like a cloud.” “Right, Gabriela!” “Wow! Well, now we know there are three states of water! So, below the freezing mark, water is in the solid state. Above that, water is in the liquid state until it boils and changes into steam!” “Two scientists in the house!” “High-five! “ All right!” “Yeah!” “Here we are!” “Okay, okay, okay! What’s the big surprise?” “Just a minute. You’ll see. I put water and juice in the fridge . . .” “And it froze into ice pops?” “It’s gonna be so cool! “Hey, they didn’t turn into ice!” “Ah, the fridge isn’t cold enough to freeze water. “Oh well . . . “Sorry, Gabriela.” “Don’t worry, kids. I’ve got you covered! Here we go! Two ice pops right from the freezer, where the temperature is below freezing. ” “Yay!” “Mmm. . . .” “Thank you!” “Thank you!” “Now don’t let them melt.” “Bye, scientists!”

Frames from films are used in the selection.

Pure experiment. How schoolchildren create robots that will free cities from garbage

Often, garbage is dangerous - so much so that it harms even those who clean it up or dispose of it. In order to make cleaning more efficient and reduce the harm done to people, it is necessary to transfer this process to robots, the schoolchildren decided and invented devices that the TASS correspondent went to find out about.

The dream is to help adults

Imagine a workshop where metalworking machines work. Sharp metal shavings fly in all directions. But as soon as she falls to the floor, a small robot appears. It has ultrasonic sensors to determine where the garbage needs to be removed.

With a special brush, he collects chips in a tray, sorting them along the way: ferrous metal is separated from non-ferrous metal, so that later it can be easily recycled and used again. To do this, the robot has electromagnets. When the containers for metal waste in the back of the robot are filled, the machine itself goes to the specified place for unloading and also unloads the tanks on its own.

Who do you think created such a robot? No, not Japanese engineers. And not employees of research institutes. A nine-year-old schoolboy from Ufa, Amir Ibragimov. And this is far from the first robot he designed.

And with this prototype of the DustBot multifunctional cleaning robot, the boy has already won a prize at the Russian Industrial Forum, which was held in Ufa at the end of February this year. A third-grade student received a diploma of the II degree in the nomination "The best youth project among students and graduate students of universities."

Not only industrialists from Russian regions and neighboring countries, but also the official delegation from China became interested in the idea of DustBot.

"So far, the robot created by Amir can only move along a predetermined trajectory. But I think we will be able to get rid of this limitation," Guzelia Gizzatullina and Gazinur Bayazitov, mentors of the young genius, teachers of mobile robotics at the Globe Center for Children's Creativity, are sure .

Amir is very serious, and he has already managed to solve a number of important tasks. For example, his cleaning robot does not work in the workshop, but outdoors, it can use an autonomous power source - solar panels.

"It's always summer here": how the school of the greatest mathematician of the 20th century lives , while simultaneously accumulating energy, which it uses later when it is needed," the mentors say.

You can control the cleaning robot through a special application on your smartphone. And you can also just tell the smart car what is required of it, for example, go and unload the tanks. Amir also provided voice control. Ideas, what else should be taken into account, the Ufa schoolboy is prompted by reality itself.

"In the summer, my mother and I were at the station, and it was very hot there. Under the glass roof, the air warmed up so much that it was hard to breathe," says Amir Ibragimov. "Therefore, now my robot has one more function - it measures the amount of carbon dioxide , temperature and humidity in the room".

    Amir Ibragimov

© Personal archive of the Ibragimov family

If all these parameters are too high, the robot sends a message with recommendations to open windows or turn on ventilation. "The same cleaning robot disinfects the air where it works: it has ultraviolet lamps installed. DustBot also has sensors that can detect pollution not only indoors, but also outdoors, and warn of danger," adds Amir.

It is very important for Amir that his robots are put into practice. He also got into robotics to help adults solve problems they can't handle on their own.

"For the first time, my son wanted to create a robot that would clean up garbage instead of a person when we traveled around Crimea. It was very unpleasant for him to see how much garbage accumulates on hiking trails in these beautiful places," recalls Aigul Ibragimova, Amir's mother. then he was convinced more than once that such a robot was very necessary."

"The desire to be useful, to help people is Amir's main motivation," adds Aigul Ibragimova.

Now the boy has created another robot that can process food waste into vermicompost, a substance that helps restore soil and increase crop yields. So far, all of Amir's robots are prototypes, but his mother is sure that this is not just a hobby.

    Amir Ibragimov

© Personal archive of the Ibragimov family

"No one pushed him to take up robotics. He himself began to assemble the first machines, now his seven-year-old brother has joined in, and of course, I hope that someday the ideas of children will be used in the real world," proudly Aigul.

So far, only diplomas and cups have been in a place of honor in the Ibragimovs' house. One of the most significant awards is for winning the creative nomination at the International Championship in Engineering and Robotics "RoboLiga World - 2018" in Moscow, the participants of which came from ten countries of the world. But parents, mentors, and most importantly, Amir himself are sure: someday copyright certificates and patents will definitely appear here.

A manipulator instead of a broom

If Amir is still a junior high school student, then for Elizaveta Prishlyak, a student of the Specialized Educational and Scientific Center of Novosibirsk State University (SEC NSU), school life will end this spring. Is it any wonder that the talented eleventh grader came much closer to the industrial implementation of her cleaning robot.

The girl created a prototype of a robot that can independently collect garbage on the city streets, recognize its different types, sort it into containers and deliver it for recycling.

The schoolgirl's supervisor, an employee of the Engineering Design Laboratory of the Specialized Science and Technology Center of NSU Alexander Maltsev is sure that the robot has a real industrial potential.

"Autonomous cleaning machines have now appeared in Europe that clean city streets with the help of brushes and vacuum cleaners, moving along a given route and bypassing all obstacles on the way," says Alexander. "There are experimental robots that come to houses so that people themselves put they contain bags of garbage, and then they take them for recycling. Waste processing enterprises also already use mechanisms that can recognize and sort various fragments of household waste with the help of video cameras, metal detectors and manipulators. But there is no universal robot yet."

This is the universal robot that Elizabeth plans to create.

"If, after graduating from school, Elizaveta goes to NSU, as she plans now, we will be able to continue working with her on this project already as a student; use in the urban economy," says Maltsev.

    Elizaveta Prishlyak

    © Alexander Maltsev

"This task seems to me very urgent, because now garbage can lie on city streets for weeks, which poses a threat not only to people's health, but also to the entire environment. People are forced to remove garbage manually , and these are also additional risks - after all, the cleaners have to come into contact with potentially dangerous objects such as chemicals and glass. And efficient waste processing is impossible without its preliminary sorting," says Elizaveta Prishlyak.

However, creating such an autonomous robot turned out to be difficult, since the task involves a whole range of problems.

    © Alexander Maltsev

"Now we need to refine the software to teach the robot to recognize and classify complex fragments of garbage at the maximum distance to it. Improve the manipulator so that the machine can grab such objects and put them in the right container on board. There are many tasks, and we continue to work on all of them. Also, before the end of the school year, we intend to give the robot a more aesthetic appearance," says the inventor.

In early February, Elizaveta Prishlyak already presented a model of the robot she created at the XV Baltic Science and Engineering Competition in St. Petersburg, one of the largest scientific competitions for schoolchildren in Russia. As a result of the competition, the girl received a special award from one of the partners of the event - the international biotechnology company BIOCAD.

Even now, a robot created by a schoolgirl from Novosibirsk is able to solve problems that are beyond the power of mechanisms designed by much more venerable inventors. The machine not only finds garbage on its own, but also identifies it using computer vision technology. The robot can recognize small fragments at a distance of 1.8 meters, large fragments - five meters before the object.

    Elizaveta Prishlyak

    © Alexander Maltsev

The robot collects them with a manipulator, sorts and puts them into containers. Now Elizabeth is going to teach the robots to interact with each other so that they can clean up a large area of garbage in a coordinated manner or transport large objects. The girl is already developing an algorithm for joint movement and work.

When everything is perfected, a few large autonomous sweepers can keep the streets of a small town clean. And the task of public utilities will be reduced to monitoring their work and periodically carrying out maintenance.

    A clean stern trail

But there's more than just trash on the streets. And it is technically much easier to clean a hard surface than, for example, the surface of water. But the participants of the Ural project shift, which recently ended at the Sirius Educational Center in Sochi, were not afraid of the difficulties. Together with their mentors, schoolchildren created a working prototype of a robot that cleans the surfaces of urban reservoirs with stagnant water.

Why is it important that the mechanism is specifically designed for standing water? The fact is that it is much easier to clean lakes or ponds where there is a current: it is enough to install a dam and then assemble everything.

And when the water does not circulate, garbage floats near the coast, accumulates in the coastal zone, and it has to be removed manually. A robot is able to cope with this task much more efficiently than a human. And the project team of five students in grades 9-10 has already partially solved this problem.

Participants of the Ural project shift, Grigory Kurennoy — in the center

© Personal archive of Grigory Kurennoy

"The initial tests of the chassis and the garbage collection system have already been carried out. The general principle of the mechanism is quite simple: the robot moves along the water surface, collects garbage from it and delivers it to the unloading area. All the complexity is in the details, "explains Denis Denisov, team mentor, junior researcher at the Department of Engineering Production Organization of the Ural Federal University.

The cleaning robot looks like a catamaran, and it moves with almost the same wheels as the old steamers. The conveyor that carries the debris to the collection area resembles a system that is successfully used in snowblowers. The lower part of the conveyor is immersed in water, and, getting on it, the garbage goes up along the belt, into the compartment.

© Personal archive of Grigory Kurennoy

"The most difficult thing was to develop a compact and hermetically sealed case for electronics, and then find the best place for its location," says Grigory Kurennoy, a student of the Specialized Educational and Scientific Center of the Ural Federal University (SATC UrFU), who worked in a team of Ural schoolchildren programming a robot. "At the moment, it is necessary to finalize the part of the system responsible for searching for garbage. And this seems to me the most interesting task - to develop the algorithm for searching for garbage floating on the water."

Of course, an industrial prototype is still a long way off.

"We don't even set such a task now. At the moment, it is necessary to check the effectiveness of the design solutions used. Some of them turned out to be successful, some not, and this is normal. The main thing is that successful finds in the future can be adopted and improved. About implementation project with the aim of making a profit is out of the question," says Denis Denisov.
