What We Do - Share For Kids

OBJECTIVES

Our main goal is to enrich the relationship between children and books. Regardless of the social-economic condition; our aim is for them to receive a book. Besides, we support vulnerable children with donations to overcome financial problems that negatively affect their literacy. We use the donations to provide some financial contribution for children such as refugees.

Raising social awareness.

Share for kids is also a platform where we will raise awareness concerning adverse issues facing children. Regardless of their origin, we will fight to bring attention to the children facing problems all over the world in the best ways we can.

Promotion of environmental awareness.

We strongly encourage the donation and sharing of used books. We hope that this practice will allow children to develop their environmental awareness. Reading material can be given a new lease of life in the hands of another child. This reduces wastage and also illustrates in the young minds our shared joint connection with the environment.

Cultural diversity.

The books are exciting windows into a culture. We hope to open these windows to children in the Netherlands and gradually all over the world. The books you provide undoubtedly open young growing minds to new and exciting literary experiences. This is key to investing and growing rich adventurous minds for the future.

Benefits and risks of social media for children

Many social media platforms have age restrictions. For example, to have a Facebook or Instagram account, you must be at least 13 years old.

Social media benefits

Social media is an important part of the social and creative life of many young people.

Children and teens use social media to have fun, make and maintain friendships, share interests, discover personalities, and develop relationships with families. This is a continuation of their personal and offline interactions. Especially for older teenagers, this is often a key part of how they interact with friends.

Social media can connect children and teenagers to global online communities based on common interests. These could be support networks such as for young people with disabilities or illnesses, LGBT teenagers or children from certain cultures. Or they could be sites for commenting and sharing content about certain interests, such as games, series, music or hobbies.

Your child can gain many other benefits from using social media:

  • Digital media literacy : Learning and experimenting with social media can help your child gain the knowledge and skills to enjoy online activities and avoid online -risks.
  • Collaborative Learning : Your child can use social media to share educational content both informally and in a formal school setting.
  • Creativity : Your child can be creative with profile pages, photos and videos, and game mods.
  • mental health and wellness: Connecting with extended family and friends and participating in local and global online communities can give your child a sense of connection and belonging.

Social media risk

Social media can also be dangerous. For your child, these risks include:

  • Exposure to inappropriate or upsetting content , such as rude, offensive, violent or sexual comments or images.
  • Uploading inappropriate content, such as embarrassing or provocative photos or videos of yourself or others.
  • Making personal information available to strangers, such as phone numbers, date of birth, or location.
  • Cyberbullying.
  • Exposure to too much targeted advertising and marketing.
  • Data leaks , such as selling it to other organizations.

Social media risk management for kids and teens

Talking is the best way to protect your child from social media risks and keep them safe online. Talking gives you the opportunity to help your child:

  • Find out how they treat other people and how they are treated online - for example, you can encourage your child to leave only positive comments.
  • Understand the risks associated with using social media - for example, your child may be tagged in an embarrassing photo taken at a party without adding any other personal information
  • Find out what to do if people ask for personal information, act rude or offensive online, post embarrassing pictures of your child, or share information that links to them.

Learn more about social media

Social media platforms and functionality are constantly changing, so it's a good idea to be aware of the networks your child uses. You can ask him which platforms are popular and which ones he likes. You can also ask your child to show you how they work.

Consider age guidelines

Many social media platforms have age limits that are often not respected. This can be difficult if your child's friends use social media platforms before they are old enough and your child wants to do the same.

If you would like your child to wait, you might consider the following options:

  • Could you go to compromise ? What if your child uses the family social media account until they are old enough? This can give your child the opportunity to connect with friends with your help on social media.
  • Can your child use a kid friendly social media platform like YouTube Kids or Messenger Kids ? They have stricter security settings and age-appropriate content.

What about a social media ban?

Social media is increasingly embedded in apps, games, websites and even learning environments, making it difficult to ban even for young children. And if you ban social media, your child might be more tempted to check it out when they're away from home. This means you are missing out on an opportunity to teach your child how to manage social media risks and behave respectfully on social media.

Online safety for kids ages 9-11 and online safety for teens is all about identifying and managing risks and protecting your data and privacy.

Setting social media policies

Some written social media guidelines can help your child use them responsibly, respectfully, and safely. This agreement may be part of a family media plan. If these rules include your use of social media as well as your child, you can be a positive role model.

Here are some things that may be included in your recommendation.

Use of social media

This could cover basics such as:

  • When to use social media and how much time your child can spend on it.
  • Can social media be used during homework, family meals, etc.
  • Where you can use social media - for example, only in the family areas of the house, not in the bedrooms.

Posting content and comments

Your child must agree:

  • Do not upload or post inappropriate messages, images or videos.
  • Showing respect in messages and when sharing content - for example, if you can't say or do something face to face, it's not okay on the Internet either.
  • Get consent before posting images of other people.

Privacy protection

It is recommended that you and your child familiarize themselves with the rules and privacy settings of social networks.

Your child can protect their privacy by agreeing to:

  • Not share personal information such as phone numbers, location, and date of birth with strangers online or with people they don't know personally.
  • Don't add personal details such as phone numbers or date of birth to your personal profiles.
  • Check your privacy and location settings regularly, especially on mobile phones.
  • Keep passwords and login information private and do not share them with friends.
  • Log out after using public computers.
  • Disable features such as posting to multiple social networks at once.

Social media safety

Basic safety for your child includes:

  • Block and report people they don't know or people who post nasty comments or content.
