I love finding new ways to make learning how to read a fun and hands-on experience. Teaching your kids letters and sounds will help them build a strong foundation in phonics and phonemic awareness. As they apply those skills they will be well on their way to learning how to read. Once children can segment the sounds in short CVC words orally and know most letters and sounds they are ready to beginning blending and spelling CVC words.

In this Short E CVC Word Building Phonics Game, your children practice to identifying, segmenting, building, and writing short vowel words for spelling and reading practice.

This CVC word building phonics game is designed for prekindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade and was inspired by our popular CVC word building mats. These mats focus on words with a mix of short vowel sounds, and I received multiple requests to create individual sets for each short vowel sound.

MATERIALS AND SETUP

Setting up this activity is a breeze.

First, print out your free printable Short E CVC Word Building Phonics Game (available below). Add in either the word prompt cards or some small toys that relate to CVC words.

Be sure to introduce the words used to your children before asking them to do the activity independently. That way children are familiar with the words. We’ve also included a quick reference answer key for kids to refer to as needed.

Cover your CVC Word Building Mat with a dry erase pocket, sheet protector, or laminate it for repeated use with dry-erase markers. Gather letter manipulatives and a dry erase marker, and you’re set! Game cards can be placed in a bag or face down in a stack so kids can draw them at random.

HOW TO PLAY

For each prompt card kids will:

Place the card in the top left box.

Tap each dot to segment the sounds in the word. This section is designed to help kids orally segment and break apart the sounds in the word. Isolating these sounds will help them spell the word in the next section.

Build the word with magnetic letters or another letter manipulative. We’re using magnetic letters here, but you could also use letter tiles, letter rocks or any small letter manipulative you have on hand.

Write the initial and final letters to spell the word. This provided additional fine motor practice and help with learning letter formation. (We recommend using a laminated sheet, not using a pencil.)

Erase and repeat with a new prompt card.

Optional: On a separate sheet of paper have kids record which words they built during their time at the center. This provides extra writing practice and shows how many words they worked on. Kids can also check their answers using the Answer Key if desired.

    The artistic word is a powerful pedagogical tool that can be appropriate in the process of communicating with children literally everywhere. Of course, in order to successfully apply it, it is desirable that an adult read it by heart, be emotional, maintain eye contact with the child.

    Examples of using a literary word in regime moments:

    In the morning, create a good mood and ease the separation of the child from his mother.
