Letter J is the 10th letter of the alphabet which means after this one we only have 9 more posts left in our letter of the week show and tell series.  Yay!  It’s been fun but I’ll be excited to be done soon.  So let’s get to it!  Today I’m sharing 55 show and tell letter J ideas with you all.

General Show and Tell Tips:

  • Look through your kid’s stuffed animals and action figures.  Sometimes you can find a character whose name starts with the letter that you need.
  • Look through your child’s books.  You might find a book with a title that begins with the letter that you need
  • When all else fails have your kiddo take in an alphabet block with the letter on it or a an alphabet letter magnet.
  • My son once took in a picture that he colored from a coloring book.  The picture was of something that started with the letter of the week and he loved showing off his artwork during share time.

And this won’t help you think of anything but this last tip will help keep you out of a bind-

My #1 Show and Tell Tip

Set a reminder on your phone for the night before show and tell.

That way you won’t forget and scramble to find something in your car while you wait in the drop off line for school. Yes, yes that did happen to me. Don’t be me. You’re better than that!

Thought show and tell was a thing of the past? Think again! Show and Tell was one of my favorite parts of teaching Kindergarten. Every Friday was Show and Tell, but of course we made it educational too! Each week show and tell corresponded to the letter we were learning. Students would bring an item from home that started with that letter and then we would use the experience as part of our writing workshop lesson.

Show and Tell Tips:

  • Don’t send anything valuable, irreplaceable, fragile or dangerous to school.
  • Make sure your child is able to tell about the object they are bringing for show and tell.
  • Plan ahead. Nothing is more stressful that running around your house at 7:10 a. m. before the bus arrives trying to find something that starts with the letter z on a whim. Remember, this is a fun activity that is meant to enhance your child’s learning!
  • Involve your child. Let them choose what object they want to show and tell! They are the ones learning the alphabet after all!

Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box and encourage your child to be creative! There are also a lot of objects on the list that you probably have around the house in a picture, toy, or stuffed form!

Vowel sounds and letters. How many are there in Russian?

We will teach you how to write without errors and tell stories in an interesting way

Start learning

The correct pronunciation of words is one of the components of beautiful and literate speech. To achieve this, you will first have to study the sounds themselves. In this article, we will figure out together what vowel sounds are, how many vowels are in the alphabet of the Russian language, and what sounds they can represent.

What are vowels and sounds

Vowel sounds are those sounds that we freely convey with our voice. Hence their name comes from: voice means "voice". When pronouncing, air exits through the mouth and does not create noise, and the position of the tongue and lips determines which vowel sound we will pronounce.

There are much fewer vowels in Russian than consonants. There are 6 of them in total: [a], [o], [i], [s], [y] and [e]. To understand whether a vowel sound is in front of you or not, try to sing it. For example:

  • a-a-a ,

  • y-y-y

  • ss .

If it works, then the sound is a vowel. You can't do that with consonants.

There are more vowels than sounds - there are 10 of them: a, i, u, u, o, e, e, e, i, s . This difference is due to the fact that some of these letters can represent two sounds and are pronounced using a combination of a vowel and a consonant [y']. For example, in word spruce the letter e expresses two sounds - [y'] and [e]. Let's look at the table all the vowel sounds and the letters that represent them.

Demo lesson in Russian

Take the test at the introductory lesson and find out what topics separate you from the "five" in Russian.

How vowel sounds are related to syllables

Vowel sounds form syllables - sound segments of words that we pronounce with one breath. One syllable can be either a vowel with one or more consonants, or a vowel alone. There is even a rule by which syllables can be counted: how many vowels in a word - so many syllables. nine0003

For example, in the word journey there are 5 vowels: [u], [i], [e], [i] and [e]. This means that it has 5 syllables: p-te-she-stvi-e .

Test yourself!

Count the number of syllables in the words: try on, tanner, well-groomed, care, prefix, capital, wet, invitation, orange .

Vowel sounds and stress

Now let's see what groups vowel sounds are divided into. Sometimes their pronunciation depends on whether the stress falls on them, that is, whether we single them out with our voice. So vowel sounds are divided into stressed and unstressed. Here are some examples:

Sound
Impact position
Unstressed position
[and]
large
prize money
[a]
chess
spruce
[y]
frog
empty

Stress in Russian can fall on any of the existing vowel sounds. However, only 4 of them can be unstressed - these are [a], [i], [y] and [s]. In this position, we pronounce sounds weaker than under stress, because of which they can change qualities and sound differently.

Interestingly, the vowels [o] and [e] can only be stressed. There are only a couple of exceptions to this rule: for example, in words cocoa and canoe sounds [o] and [e] in an unstressed position.

How unstressed vowels are related to consonants

How an unstressed vowel sounds depends on the consonant that precedes it. Or rather, from its hardness or softness. If it is a hard consonant, it can be followed by unstressed vowels [y], [a] and [s]. When we talk about a soft consonant, it is followed by unstressed vowels [y] and [and].

After a hard consonant
After a soft consonant
[l]howl
p[r'i]kaz
[wa] yes
[s'u] yes
[woo]lcan
[v'i]trina

Test yourself

It's time to find out if you now understand well what vowel sounds are in Russian. To do this, we have prepared tasks for self-examination. nine0003

Task 1

List all the vowels in these words:

  • squeal,

  • fair,

  • rejoice,

  • doll,

  • distant,

  • buddy,

  • voting,

  • mirror,

  • story,

  • OK,

  • captivate.

Task 2

Name 5 words each in which the sounds [a], [i], [y] and [s] would be stressed.

Task 3

Name 5 words in which an unstressed vowel would come after a hard consonant, and 5 more words where it would follow a soft consonant.

Task 4

Count the number of syllables in the words below (don't forget to use the rule you learned at the beginning of the article!):

  • weightless,

  • sunrise,

  • adventure,

  • painter,

  • perpetuate,

  • pleasant,

  • image,

  • category,

  • exciting,

  • melting,

  • snowflake.

The rules of phonetics help us to speak correctly, so it is important to master the topic of vowels well and avoid gaps in knowledge. If even after reading the article you still have questions on the topic, you can figure them out in the Russian language course at Skysmart. In online lessons, the teacher will help the student work out the theory and consolidate the result on non-boring tasks. So the student will be able to improve the quality of knowledge, and fall in love with the subject. nine0003

The longest words in Russian Probably Scandinavian languages are in the first place.

There are many long words in it. If we talk about the longest, then in the Guinness Book of Records the longest word in the Russian language is "X-ray electrocardiographic" , it has 33 characters. It was the record of 1933. And in 2003, it was replaced by a word of 35 characters - "highly contemplating" .

Chemistry - a storehouse of the longest words
Although their leadership is formally recognized - in analytical chemistry there are simply huge names of substances, since they are built according to a certain scheme. For example, the adjective "tetrahydropyranylcyclopentyltetrahydropyridine" consists of 55 letters. Or "methoxychlorodiethylaminomethylbutylaminoacridine" - 44 characters.

Another example: the prefix "great-" can be used in a concept that indicates the degree of relationship, many times - "great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather" . Theoretically, this word can be stretched indefinitely. Word formations from numerals that denote certain quantities can also be extremely long: "one thousand nine hundred and seven and six centimeters" - 43 characters. However, regarding all these examples, philologists are still arguing whether to consider them the longest words in the Russian language. They are not universally used, and the possibility of making endless designs distinguishes them from the bulk.

The longest verbs and other parts of speech
If we talk about verbs, then the longest words are “re-examine” and “internationalize” , they contain 24 letters, if you form word forms with an ending from them, for example , nine0015 "-smoking" , then you get 25 letters. In the longest nouns - "misanthropy" and "excellency" - also 24 letters each - you can create word forms in the plural, and you get 26 letters (although the first word is not used in the plural). Among animate nouns, most of the letters - 21 each - are in the words "eleventh grader" and "clerk" . The longest interjection recorded in Russian dictionaries is "physical education hello" .

We are used to the fact that prepositions and conjunctions are short words, but the word “respectively” falls out of the general row, it has 14 letters. The situation is similar with adverbs - there is only one long adverb "unsatisfactory" , consisting of 19 letters.

Some argue whether nouns and adjectives with hyphens can be considered as the longest words in the Russian language, because they are “glued together” artificially, but still let's pay attention to them: in word "agricultural machine-building" - 38 characters, and in "grubber-bulldozer-loader" - 31. Similar words include an adjective (although it is without a hyphen) "electrophotosemiconductor" - 28 characters and "water and mud peat paraffin treatment » - 29 characters. The longest food word formation - out of 38 characters - "bread sausage kindly productive" . The word is funny, but at the same time noted in an authoritative source - the spelling dictionary of the Russian Academy of Sciences (responsible ed. V. V. Lopatin). nine0003

The longest words in literature
If we recall classical literature, Nikolai Leskov has in one of his popular stories the word “in a wise way” . Interestingly, no one can reliably explain what it means - most likely, Leskov himself invented it.

Probably the longest abbreviation will also make an indelible impression on you: "NIIOMTPLABOPARMBETZHELBETRABSBORMONIMONKOH-OTDTEHSTROMONT" . We will not list the full name of this institute - it will take a whole paragraph. Imagine how difficult it was for the employees of this scientific institution to name their position or place of work if necessary.

An interesting fact - there is an extremely long word for phobia - the fear of just long words! It sounds like this: hippopotomomonstrosesquippedaliophobia (37 characters).
