90,000 Australian scientists have managed to find the main cause of obesity | Utro-Novosti: The latest news from Russia and the world, important events and useful tips They found that highly processed foods are the main cause of obesity. logan jeffrey

Researchers have monitored the health of more than nine thousand people for a year. They found that highly processed foods are the main cause of obesity.

Researchers at the University of Sydney have confirmed the "protein leverage hypothesis" that was discussed almost 20 years ago. Its essence is that people overeat fats and carbohydrates due to the body's strong appetite for protein, which the body actively prefers to everything else.

Since much of today's diet consists of highly processed and refined foods with low protein content, people are forced to consume more high-calorie foods until their protein requirement is met.

Processed foods are protein-free and cause food cravings

“Because people eat more unhealthy or highly processed and refined foods, they increase their risk of being overweight and obese. And this, as we know, increases the risk of chronic diseases, ”says lead author of the study Amanda Grech.

“It's becoming increasingly clear that our bodies eat to meet our protein needs,” added Professor David Raubenheimer, Chair of the Leonard Ullmann Chair in Nutritional Ecology at the School of Life and Environmental Sciences. “But the problem is that the Western diet contains less and less protein. Thus, you must consume more of it in order to reach your protein goal. Humans, like many other species, have a stronger appetite for protein than for other energy-providing nutrients, fats and carbohydrates. This means that if the protein in our diet is diluted with fats and carbohydrates, we will consume more energy to get the protein our body craves.”

Where there is protein, besides meat

Contrary to common misconception, protein can be obtained not only from meat. Good sources of protein are milk, fish, eggs, soy, legumes, and some grains such as wheat germ.

Researchers studied the health of more than nine thousand people during the year, the average age of study participants is 46 years. It turned out that the average energy intake of the population was 8,671 kilojoules (kJ), while the percentage of energy from proteins was only 18.4%. There were 43.5% carbohydrates in the diet, there were also a lot of fats - 30. 9%. At the same time, only 2.2% percent of fiber. Who cares what accounted for the remaining 4.3%, we report: alcohol.

They then found that those who consumed less protein at their first meal of the day increased their total food intake at subsequent meals. And those who received the recommended amount of protein did not overeat. And in general they ate less, reports the results of the ScienceDaily study.

And here's another thing: those who had a higher proportion of protein at the beginning of the day generally ate fewer high-calorie foods during the day. And those who ate low-protein foods in the morning continued to increase their intake. These people seemed to be trying to compensate for the lack of protein in the morning with a higher intake of total energy. This is despite the fact that the first meal was the smallest for both groups, and the last meal was the largest.

Those who avoided protein ate high amounts of foods high in saturated fat, sugar, and salt instead of eating foods from the "protein" recommended groups (grains, vegetables, legumes, dairy, and meat). Consequently, they had an overall leaner diet at each meal, with the percentage of protein energy decreasing even as the amount of food was increased. Scientists call this effect “protein dilution.”

Bottom line: where obesity comes from

Scientists from the University of Sydney say that the body's high need for protein and its lack in highly processed foods is a key cause of overeating and obesity.
