What is a craft and does it exist in the 21st century
What professions do modern children know? Lawyer, economist and programmer. Our blogger DSHI.online offers to return to the roots and talk about artisans. They are more relevant than ever in the 21st century: the point is not only that manual labor is now in fashion, but also that the craft has changed a lot over the past centuries.
Craft. What do you think of when you hear such a seemingly outdated word? Hefty blacksmiths in shabby leather aprons, wrinkled hands of an aging potter, bobbins flickering at a speed close to the speed of light in the hands of a lace maker come to mind.
Potter at work. Antique photoTurning to the Internet search engine, we learn that a craft is a small-scale manual production using hand tools, based on the personal skills and talent of the master.
For a long time there have been a variety of crafts: blacksmithing, pottery, carpentry, carpentry, spinning, weaving, tailoring, baking, saddlery, leather, jewelry. How much! But this is not a complete list of crafts!
Most of them have grown into powerful independent productions - large concerns, factories, factories. It's a completely different song. There are practically no hand tools in industry, and the individual talent of each worker is not put at the head of the table. Products are unified and created according to a certain established standard. It turns out that with the development of technology, the craft as an activity has sunk into oblivion? By no means!
Such handicrafts as Gzhel ceramics, Dymkovo and Filimonov toys, Palekh miniature, Khokhloma painting, Vologda lace and so on have survived and are widespread. Surely many of us have heard about them at least once in our lives.
Troika Filimonov toyIn addition to famous crafts, there are many craftsmen who create unique handmade items that are in demand nowadays among lovers of exclusivity, collectors or, for example, adherents of eco-friendly things that do not pollute the environment.
In addition, let's imagine that we need to replace the zipper in a jacket, install new heels, fix a malfunction in a clockwork, or make a duplicate key. Who will help us in this? All the same artisans who work in small groups in repair shops. Such groups of masters are called artels.
Artist Nikolai ZudovThe responses of the old profession reach us only in the preservation of traditional crafts and the existence of repair shops? The answer is "no" again! The 21st century is the best way to promote the development of crafts! Any freelancer is essentially an artisan! How does it happen?
Freelancer produces piece goods independently for a specific customer or for sale. It could be anything. For example, an article, image processing in Photoshop, creation of a logo, illustrations, websites, a PR campaign for a product or service. That is, copywriters, proofreaders, SMM managers, freelance artists, web designers, content and event managers working for themselves are all the same as we would call them if we lived in the 19th century, handicraftsmen. The product has changed, but the essence has not changed. Now every craftsman can find something to their liking!

Russian crafts and ancient folk crafts of Russia
-
Blacksmithing
Blacksmithing has become the most ancient folk craft in Rus'. Blacksmiths forged tools, tools (iron coulters, scythes, sickles, knives, saws, locks) and weapons (swords, sabers, arrowheads, chain mail, helmets).
A separate industry was "goldsmithing", i. e., jewelry. Craftsmen made skillful jewelry - bronze amulets and jewelry: pendants, buckles, kolts and hryvnias (ancient earrings and necklaces). Jewelry is made using the technique of granulation (a pattern consisting of many balls was soldered onto the product) and filigree (the pattern was applied with a thin wire soldered onto a metal surface, and the gaps between the filigree partitions were filled with multi-colored enamel). This is how high-value jewelry made in the technique of cloisonne enamel, typically Russian jewelry, was obtained. The jewelry technique of Russian masters was very complex, and their products were in great demand in many countries of the world.
Pottery
Pottery became a separate entity somewhat later than blacksmithing. In the XI century. the potter's wheel appears. In addition to the most diverse dishes, potters made bricks.
Woodworking
Pre-Christian Rus' knew casting and chasing, ceramics and embroidery, mastered the fine craftsmanship of enamels. Kyiv artists mastered bone carving, blackening, metal engraving, tile making, and glassmaking.
But Rus was most skillful in woodworking. Wooden buildings, huts and mansions, gates and bridges, fortress walls, as well as boats, household utensils were generously decorated with carvings and determined its appearance.
Art painting
Rus' has long been famous for its porcelain and the art of artistic painting. There were even different schools and directions of these folk crafts:
Gzhel is the name of porcelain with elegant blue painting on a white background. This name comes from the name of the area near Moscow. Pottery has existed here since
beginning of the 14th century. Gzhel ceramics is known and popular all over the world.Zhostovo painting (after the name of a village near Moscow) - decorative oil painting on metal trays, then varnished: flowers and fruits, filled with bright colors on a black background.
Palekh miniature (after the name of the regional center in the Ivanovo region) - this is the name of painting on papier-mâché lacquerware. Caskets and caskets with household folklore, literary, historical, religious subjects, made in bright colors on a black background. The art of Palekh lacquer miniature dates back to the 15th century. Initially, artists painted icons. The ancient technology of painting is passed down from generation to generation.
Khokhloma is hand-painted on wood. This craft is over 300 years old. Cups, salt shakers, chairs, shelves are painted with outlandish fiery scarlet flowers. The secret of these products is that they are varnished two or three times, and then tempered in an oven. As a result, the lacquer turns yellow, and wooden painted cups look like precious gilded dishes.Lubok - Russian folk pictures created by printing on paper from a wooden block. Sold at fairs as early as the 17th century, right up to the beginning of the 20th century, they were considered the most massive type of fine art in Rus'. The subject matter of folk pictures is very diverse: it covers the themes of religious and moralizing, folk epos and fairy tales, historical and medical, necessarily accompanied by an instructive or humorous text, telling about the customs and life of that time, containing folk wisdom and humor.
