Sounds of fun

It sounds fun vs. It sounds like fun.

Ask the Editor

Question

Is there any difference between the sentences "It sounds like fun" and "It sounds fun"? — Dide, South Korea

Answer

No, there is no real difference between these sentences. They are both correct, and they mean the same thing.

This is because of the unusual qualities of the word fun. Fun is unusual because it can behave as either an adjective or a noun, with virtually the same meaning: (something that is) amusing and enjoyable.

In the sentence "It sounds fun," fun is an adjective that means amusing and enjoyable. In the sentence “It sounds like fun,” fun is a noun meaning something that is amusing and enjoyable.

The pairs of sentences below are also identical in meaning:

  • That looks fun. = That looks like fun.
  • It seemed fun. = It seemed like fun.
  • It feels fun to travel on my own. = It feels like fun to travel on my own.

Episode 457: Charles Martin and Pastor Joby Martin on Responding to the Miraculous, Prayer, and Jesus' Death and Resurrection

Our dear friend, Charles Martin is back on the pod with his pastor and friend (but no relation), Joby Martin. We talked about God not answering prayers in the way that we want Him to, what was going on in Judas' mind/heart during Holy Week, and their new book Anything Is Possible: How Nine Miracles of Jesus Reveal God’s Love for You. Also, be sure to check out Charles' new book Son of Man. You know I can't resist a chance to talk about miracles and how well Jesus loves!

Please note that this conversation was recorded just hours after the recent tragic mass shooting at a Nashville school. We do talk about this tragedy throughout the show, so I wanted to let you know beforehand, in case your heart is tender towards this right now (as is all of ours). We are praying for our friends, family, and community to be able to have space to grieve together and care for one another.

As a reminder, That Sounds Fun will not release any new episodes during Holy Week next week. We'll see you back here after Easter!

New Fan!

I met Annie recently at a church in Georgia after she spoke. I’m now a big fan of hers after the past month of reading a few of her books as well as listening to her podcasts. She has a great voice and appears to be just ever so genuine in her interviews. I’m so grateful to have found this podcast. Uplifting and inspiring!

For real!!!

Annie and team! Thanks so much, I love listening to this podcast every week. I’ve been listening for about 4 years now and I can’t wait for it to come out every week. I’m an Aussie who lives in Brazil and it refreshes my soul and heart to hear English and of course i love a good laugh! Bless ya mate! Love ya! It has encouraged my walk with God in many ways. Do yourself a favour people, follow and listen!

Great guest, bad interview

Heard the interview with Tim Mackie from the Bible Project. Tim was fantastic but the interviewer (Ann) was horrible. She wasn’t listening at all, just threw out some preset questions randomly. I felt sorry for Tim who had to endure her!

Romance (Though the sounds of fun run along my strings ...)

to my strings the sounds of joy,
They do not run from the heart;
But in a broken heart there is a secret cell,
Where black thoughts live.
A tear rolls down the cheek of fire,
It does not come from the heart.
What is stored in the heart deceived by life,
That is what will die in it.
Do not dare to look for regret in this breast,
Pets of golden hopes;
When I despise my own suffering, -
What do I care about the suffering of others?
The dead maiden's eyes have grown cold
My gaze must not be seen;
I would remember a lot of minutes flying by,
But I don't like to remember!
Memory shows terrible shadows to us,
Bloody former ghost,
He again calls to the abandoned canopy,
Like a lighthouse in a storm over the sea,
When a hurricane rejoices over the waves,
Laughs at the poor boat,
And with a cry, a swimmer without hopes to return
Regrets about his native land.

Sounds of the coming fun: the best songs for a feast

"Lonely accordion"

"Lonely accordion" written by poet Mikhail Isakovsky and composer Boris Mokrousov. The song was first performed at 1948 - and since then it has acquired not only the status of "folk", but also became popular all over the world. It was performed in English, German, Polish, and the French actor and singer Yves Montand even recorded his own version of the composition called Joli Mai (“Beautiful May”). In addition, the melody of "The Lonely Accordion" was used in the screensaver of the program "Meeting with the Song".

"Vologda"

Boris Mokrousov and poet Mikhail Matusovsky wrote this song back in 1956, but for a long time it could not get through to its listeners. Everything changed "Pesnyary". Twenty years later, they performed with Vologda, adding an accordion to their beat quartet, and caused a sensation among the public. The popularity of the composition reached such a limit that the musicians had to perform it at every concert. It would seem that bad? Only one of the Pesnyary participants was dissatisfied with the reality - Vladimir Nikolaev, who now had to carry the button accordion with him everywhere. But it was he who suggested adding this instrument to the arrangement...

Over time, "Vologda", in addition to being included in the list of the best songs for a feast, has become the unofficial anthem of the city of Vologda. This composition is constantly played at the railway station when the train departs.

"Song about Bears"

"Song about Bears" played throughout the country before the film "Prisoner of the Caucasus" (1966) hit the screens, because shortly before the premiere, composer Alexander Zatsepin sent the recording to several radio stations. And the "song" took on a life of its own - music records with it scattered throughout the USSR with a circulation of about 5 million copies. By the way, the performer of the composition Aida Vedischeva spent only about half an hour recording it. Not bad for a song that has gone down in history... and in every holiday parlor in the country.

“There is only a moment”

Another masterpiece from Alexander Zatsepin. The song is closely connected with the plot of the film "Sannikov Land" (1973), in which it was first heard. The composition is reminiscent of the transience of life and is closely intertwined with the fate of the protagonist officer Krestovsky. After "There is only a moment" began to gain popularity, it began to be jokingly called the anthem of Russian MiG fighter aircraft. However, she did not become less sincere from this.

Hits "Hands Up!"

Yes, when it comes to these musical legends, it's hard to pick just one song. “My little one”, “I’m already 18”, “Alyosha”, “He kisses you” and other compositions have been heard at discos and parties for many years. Many assume that the lyrics reflect the real life of Sergei Zhukov, but this is not entirely true. For example, the whole plot of the song "My Baby" was invented from one word. According to Zhukov, the musicians took a long time to select a suitable hero in the line “a soldier is waiting for a letter from you”: among the options were a DJ, a dancer, and a miner. But as soon as the team picked up the word "soldier", the decision to make a song in the style of correspondence between an employee and his girlfriend came by itself.

"Batteryka"

The legendary hit "Zhukov", which firmly established itself in the repertoire of anyone who has ever picked up a guitar. But why a battery?

Who would have thought that a real story is involved here. Back in 1998, the ex-girlfriend of the group's frontman Valery Zhukov invited him to meet. It was obvious from the girl's mood that she was ready to restore relations. However, the artist, to his surprise, was not ready to reciprocate. In Zhukov's pocket then there was a battery from the remote control, which he took with him to buy a new one. When he accidentally took her in his hands, he realized that the cooled feelings for the girl were like a dead battery - and this metaphor dawned on him.

"Green-eyed Taxi"

Initially this melancholic composition was supposed to be sung by one of its authors, musician Oleg Kvasha. However, life made its own adjustments - in 1988, the Melodiya company decided to make a giant disc with the participation of famous artists. "Green-eyed taxi" was lucky enough to perform Mikhail Boyarsky. By the way, at first the critics did not like this song at all - they called it "very dull, inexpressive, literally driving you to sleep. " It is unlikely that music journalists expected that in a couple of decades, queues in karaoke would line up for the performance of this hit, and Boyarsky himself would receive the Golden Gramophone award for Green-Eyed Taxi.

"Sera"

Like "Hands Up", Valery and Konstantin Meladze gave their fans a huge number of good songs. However, the song "Sir" became the singer's calling card - in it, by the way, Batyrkhan Shukenov from A-Studio, another famous figure in Russian pop culture, soloed on the saxophone.

Sweet Dreams

Among all domestic songs there should be a place for foreign compositions. The fact that the Eurythmics song Sweet Dreams has remained in dance eternity can be judged at least by the fact that Rolling Stone included it in the list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". In addition to the catchy motive and rhythm in the style of the 80s, the rather unusual video clip and the image of the lead singer Annie Lennox with short orange hair contributed to the popularity of the track.
