So let's dive into the rules of the great and mighty Russian language today and evaluate our literacy thanks to the Spelling, Russian language test game from Appscraft. Why did we choose it for the review? The answer is in the title. This is not just a test, as the developers assure, but a test game, which means that testing your knowledge will, at least, not be boring. Well, let's find out and evaluate, in turn, how good it is and whether it is even worth our time and attention. Knowledge test is built in an interesting way. It is divided into 17 levels, the names of which correspond to certain stages in the life of almost any person. The first stage is kindergarten. Then the school from the first to the eleventh grade, and then higher education, starting from the applicant and ending with the academician. This is the so-called "Campaign" mode.
Each level consists of twenty questions, or rather tasks, where you need to choose the only correct word from several options.
There are only two types of tasks, where you either choose the correct spelling of the word, or the correct version of the stress. Grades are given on a five-point system. In order to move to the next level, you need to get a score of at least “4-” and at the same time meet the allotted time for this. The higher the level, the less time is given to think about the answers. The game contains several modes. With the main mode "Company", you have already met. The other two are "Single Player" and "Two Player". There is no division into levels in the single player game. Here you simply answer twenty questions and get a grade for it. A two-player game is a competition where each player takes turns answering 20 identical questions, after which marks are given and information about the mistakes made is displayed.
The results of your efforts can be seen in the "learning statistics" section. Here you will find out how many times you received a particular mark, your average score and the five mistakes you make most often.
In the AppStore in the comments to this application, there are many angry statements about errors in the answers. Especially a lot of noise was around the word "purse". According to the developers, it should be written with the letter “and”, that is, “pouch”, which is not correct. I hasten to reassure you - they corrected this mistake and, apparently, calmed down on this, but in vain. In addition to the above word, this program has other shortcomings, as well as words, the correct answers to which are often in doubt. This is especially true for the placement of accents. For example, the word "exhaust". As you can see in the screenshot below, my answer, where the stress falls on the second syllable, is crossed out. As it turned out, it is correct to pronounce this word with an accent on the last word. Having doubted, I naturally went for an explanation by clicking on the button of the same name at the bottom of the screen, which redirected me to Yandex dictionaries. According to one source, the truth is on my side, according to the second, the stress can be placed on both the second and third syllables.
It turns out that I'm right and the developers. Sometimes you are surprised that you spend your whole life pronouncing a word incorrectly. Here, for example, we always and everywhere hear the word “anticipate” and pronounce it with an emphasis on the last syllable, but it is necessary on the penultimate one.
The shortcomings of the application include the frequent repetition of words. On the one hand, this is even good, especially if a mistake is made in a repeated word. Willy-nilly, you will remember its correct spelling or the correct placement of stress. But here they are repeated in a chaotic order and often those in which you least doubt and make mistakes. It also happens that in the answers themselves there are two absolutely identical ones. And it happens that both identical answers are correct, you choose any and you are wrong. Look at the screenshot below and you will understand everything.
Few of us can boast of 100% knowledge of the Russian language, including myself, but since the developers have taken up such a necessary and noble cause, then spelling and phonetic errors are simply unacceptable here, otherwise what's the point in such applications?
Pros: Interesting implementation of the passing system and the good old five-point rating system.
Nice chalkboard design. The ability to remember what I forgot and find out what I didn’t know or doubted.
Cons: Mistakes in words and their frequent repetition. The same words in the answer options.
Conclusions: I would gladly call this application useful and entertaining for both schoolchildren and adults, if it were not for grammatical errors. They are absolutely unacceptable here! Developers, please bring your creation to mind, and everyone will be happy!
