8 New Bedtime Stories to Read to 2-5 Year Old Children
Looking for bedtime stories to read to your child is a tough task. Where do you find a new story every night? Kids between 2-5 years are the trickiest, since you cannot pick up chapter books, they have short attention spans, and you need stories that can tickle their imagination sufficiently. Here are 8 stories that can be read to toddlers at bedtime, each of which is under 10 minutes read-time.

5. The StarfishAn old man on a beach, finds a young boy throwing starfish into the sea after a storm. He asks the boy why he is doing so. The boy replied, “I am throwing the starfish back into the ocean. The storm washed them up on to the beach last night. Now the tide is far out, and the starfish cannot return to the sea by themselves. When the sun gets too high, they will die because of the heat. So I am throwing them back into the water before that happens.”
The old man was bewildered and wondered if the boy was simply stupid. “But there must be thousands of starfish on this beach. It is impossible to save all of them. I’m afraid you won’t be able to make much of a difference”, he said.

Early age is a great time to develop an interest in reading.
Of course, girls and boys do not yet know the letters and will not be able to read fairy tales for children 2 years old on their own. Mom and dad read the first books to them, accompanying the story with funny games.In order for a son or daughter to become interested in literature, parents themselves must devote a lot of time to reading. The child looks with curiosity at adults immersed in books and asks the question: “What is so interesting there?” For this occasion, the best fairy tales for children of 3 years old - folk and author's - should be in store.
It is better not to read children's fairy tales for kids, but to tell them - because it is not at all difficult to read and remember. So that the child does not get bored listening to you, watch the expressiveness of intonation and facial expressions. The perception of the plot largely depends on the artistry and enthusiasm of the narrator himself.
Advantages of early reading
Fairy tales for 2-3 year olds are simple in content, but have a powerful educational and developmental potential. Teachers and psychologists note that reading gives kids the following benefits:
- forms a system of ideas about the world;
- enriches vocabulary;
- develops attention, memory and thinking.
In addition, when we read a fairy tale to kids, we create a warm and sincere atmosphere of a family vacation, and we also instill in children a careful and respectful attitude towards books.
But don't overload your child. Let reading be a pleasant ritual for him, which is looked forward to. To better remember the plot and characters, invite your child to act out dialogues from a fairy tale using finger puppets.
List of books to read at 2-3 years old - The best books for children 2-3 years old - Kids Russian Books stories, understand the plot, express their opinion about what they heard and saw. It's time to start more serious and meaningful reading!
How to read?
- Turn reading into a pleasant ritual for your baby. For example, do it before bed, after breakfast, or before nap. The environment plays a big role - beautiful pillows, a soft blanket, favorite toys, a beautiful lamp create a feeling of comfort, safety, tranquility and enhance the pleasant reading experience.
- Read the same work many times if the child asks for it. Such a request indicates that this particular book resonated in the soul of the baby. Use repeated reading to develop imagination and creativity - ask your child to continue a sentence or come up with their own ending to a familiar fairy tale.
- Do not be afraid to take on texts with words that you think are unfamiliar to the child. Children understand the meaning of many words in fairy tales and poems intuitively, from the context. The more new words are found in the text, the more intensively the child's vocabulary will expand.
What to read?
- Kind and instructive folk tales
- Author's tales of the classics of children's literature
- Poems and fairy tales in verse
- Poetic riddles
- Stories about nature and animals
Which books to choose?
- Editions with simple, well-executed illustrations that match the text on each page.
- Works with concise and meaningful text, a limited number of characters and a simple storyline.
- Timeless books. Focus on your own memories, think about what works you remember from childhood.
- Durable and not too expensive books for you - children at 2-3 years old do not yet realize how easy it is to damage a book.
